Shirley, my William Riley Cloer was b. Feb 1830; 1st wife Margaret J. Moore b. 1838 I have no listing of their children. William's second wife Mary Drucilla Burrell, b. abt 1857, d. 1841 is my ggrandmother. I have no listing of an AE Cloer. Elijah B. Cloer, Sr. was William's dad and Sally Howard was his mother. Mary was living in Hiawasee Towns Co. GA when she died.
In other notes I have an Alfred E. Cloer, listed as 12 yrs old in the 1880 Census of Towns Co.,GA born in NC
I hope this helps, maybe it will rule out some people. Have a great day Carolyn

this sounds like our William Riley Cloer since ours is brother to John F. Cloer, and his parents are Elijah B. Cloer Sr. & Sarah "Sally" Howard.
Please email me at <raymond@desoto.net> to discuss further. Also my sister, Karen, at <fritzzy@earthlink.net>.
My grandmother was daughter of George Merit Cloer; her name was Rosa Lee Cloer Fisher.

I am Karen Coffey. Jeff and Mary Burrell Coffee were my ggrandparents. I have just started my search this summer on information. Do you have any information you wish to share. I visited Hiawassee recently and visited the graves of William Cloer and Mary Coffee Cloer and their son Will Cloer. I have found articles related to Jeff Coffee in 1883 and have been trying to validate this is my Jeff Coffee who died then. But it fits into the right timeframe. Please email me back.

A DEATH IN JAIL

Jeff Coffee, an United States Prisoner, Dies of Measles in Fulton County Prison

On Thursday the 5th of April, John J. and Jeff E. Coffee, two brothers from Towns County, were tried in United States court for illicit distilling and found guilty of the charge. One of them, John J. Coffee was sentenced to three month imprisonment while his brother Jeff was more fortunate and got off with a sentence of 30 days and $30. After sentence had been passed and the prisoners had been confined to jail they were allowed to occupy any cell they desired, provided it was not already crowded. The two brothers asked to be placed in a cell which was occupied by other prisoners named Kite, Martin and Bowen, the entire party being well acquainted. Accordingly their wish was granted. After a few days had elapsed, they contracted measles, which at present is prevalent in the jail. Night before last John J. Coffee was dangerously ill and it was thought that he would not live through the night, while his brother was considered in a critical condition. Late in the night their conditions were somewhat improved, and the jailer and his assistants were greatly surprised to find about 8 o'clock that Jeff was in a dying condition. A courier was sent for Dr. J. M. Boring, the county physician, who soon arrived, but too late, as a speedy death was evident. About half past 9 o'clock the unfortunate man breathed his last. On the same pallet lay the sick brother of the dead man, unable to move. The scene was an affecting one and will be remembered by all who visited the jail as one of extreme sadness. The surviving brother has requested that the remains be sent to the family of the deceased in Towns County for interment.

Measles have been raging in the jail for nearly two months. The first case developed on a prisoner from Gwinnett County named Erwin.
