I share a Defenbaugh-Armstrong connection that began in OH and ended in
Livingston County, IL. While unpacking from a recent move I came across a letter written by Raymond E. Defenbaugh (who is married to Alice
Armstrong Norris), to my aunt Rose Anne
McPherson, now 80 year old, of IL. Alice's grandfather, Ray
Armstrong, and my grandfather George Arlie
Armstrong, were brothers, sons of George and
Hannah (
Plowman)
Armstrong. George was the son of George and Rose Ann (
Julien)
Armstrong. George and his brother Thomas, who married Maria
Bussard, moved from OH to IL. All are buried in Moon Point Cemetery just outside
Streator, IL. The letter contains the following information as it pertains to family connections.
"I find that the daughter (one of 10 children) of Thomas
Armstrong (1815-1864) and Maria
Bussard (1815-1899), married a
Defenbaugh and their son Allen married Aminia
Defenbaugh. Maggie Armstrong's twin sister, Kate, married
Elijah Defenbaugh.
More importantly, the daughter of the marriage of Thomas
Armstrong and Margaret
Patten (parents of brothers George and Thomas), was Nancy Ann
Armstrong (1805-1875). She was united in marriage in 1822 to Daniel K. Defenbaugh. To this union was born 10 children, one of which was George A. Defenbaugh who married Esther
Stump (1828-1890), in 1847. George and Esther had 11 children. Of these, Mary Ann (1850-1942) married Martin
Fenner, and
Georgia Ellen (1861-1935) married Adam
Irgang. Another daughter, Aminia Jane (1864-1956), mentioned earlier, married Allen H. Armstrong. This is the connection of the Armstrong-Fenners-and Irgang's for Daisy
Nell Fenner and Lloyd
Irgang were cousins and came along the next generation.
Nancy Ann (
Armstrong)
Defenbaugh would be a sister of George
Armstrong (1826-1864) who died while your grandfather George, was only a few months old. Nancy Ann would be your great great aunt and thus the connection for their involvement with the farm and your great grandparents long ago." (The
Armstrong farm in
Streator -
Livingston County, IL was purcahsed in 1852 by George and Rose Anne
Julien Armstrong. It remained in the family until January 2001.)
