Illinois Archives: Register of Prisoners

Does anyone have access to the The Illinois State Archives REGISTER OF PRISONERS, or the Index of the same publication? I am trying to find the name of a prisoner the I have been told was incarcerated (in Joliet) in the 1920-1930's and was there until he was transferred to Missouri many years later. He died in the 1960's, so he was released prior to 1965.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Lisa

Thank you for the offer to search your database. The prisoner I mentioned was using an alias name of
FRANK CARSON, although his given name was Silvester Graham O'Hara. He will be found under FRANK CARSON I do believe, but I would be grateful if you could check both names. Sometimes he dropped his first name and went by Graham O'Hara also.

It will take a day or so to get the exact dates of incarceration, but I do have this information from the Census'for now:

1930 Census Joliet, Will, IL
Prisoner, Frank CARSON Single, 33 years old, born MO parents MO

1920 Pontiac, Livingston, IL Illinois State Reformatory
Frank CARSON , 23 , born IL (incorrectly indexed as Casson).

Apparently he was convicted of several crimes throught his life, many of them I know nothing about. Silvester was born in 1896 and in jail in MO by 1917. He then went on to commit crimes in IL, spending most of his life in prison!
He was one of 7 members of a gang that kidnapped a man named Thomas Gaynor and was in many newspaper articles April 9, 1932. I am not sure if the kidnapping took place in 1932 or 1928.

If you are unable to locate anything with the above names, I will call my Uncle and get the exact dates for you.
Thanks again for your time and kind offer!
Lisa

I called my uncle this morning and he gave me the following information from the notes he has taken from relatives over the years:

Frank Carson was in the Pontiac Correctional Center in Cook, IL from (March or April)1918 to about July 1921.

Went to Joliet Correctional Center (using name Frank Carson) Feb. 1929-?). This must have been the kidnapping charge.

The Correctional Institutions identified "Frank Carson" as (Silvester)Graham O'Hara sometime after 1930, and his alias was no longer used.

Again, I am not sure if he ever got out, but he was
Sentenced 5/12/1939 for Murder, and was in the Joliet Correctional Center (under the name Graham O'Hara)until 8/1959,when he was paroled. He died in St. Louis in 1966, just months after his discharge from parole.

I have no idea what crimes he commited to land him in jail for most of his life. I am not sure what information is available, either. I would be interested in learning anything I could about Frank Carson/Graham O'Hara.

ALSO....my uncle asked if I could also inquire about a man named Lewis Flanagan, who was in Menard, Massac, IL prison from 5/1929 (when he was sentenced) or 3/1930 (when he actually came to the prison) until 1934. I am not sure what information your database holds, or what prisons you have access to the information. My uncle says this Lewis was in for Manslaughter.

Thanks for your help...I hope I have answered your questions
Lisa
