For 1865 in Illinois Nicholas S. Bastenie (indexed as this, but written on the census as Bastian) can be found in the Madison County, Township 5 census. There is an obvious husband and younger wife in the household along with an older women, 3 young females, and 1 male. Good luck. I still could not find him in 1860 census even knowing this. I did wild card searches and first name searches. He could have been moving while the census was being taken. T

Eva was b. 1866. That's the date I have for her death, in Sullivan, and I have her buried in Greenhill Cemetery. NS Bastion died in Fowler, Adams Co. 2/24/1884 while preaching there. A funeral was held there 2/26, his body shipped home to Sullivan, another funeral held 2/27 in Sullivan, and he was buried there. As I recall he was buried in Sullivan Cemetery, but that info is in a box I never unpacked from my last move 4 years ago! In a way that would make sense, to be buried next to their daughter. I know the grave was unmarked but when I figure out which cemetery, it ought to be noted in the cemetery records. His wife Eunice died June 8, 1891 in Sullivan and the funeral was held the next day. She was laid to rest next to him, so at that time at least the cemetery knew where he was. There was no marker on her grave either. This info came from her obit, which is also in the still packed box. Her obit which came, as I recall, from an adjacent county, might mention what cemetery she was buried in. His obit was not a local one, but came from the Disciples denomination, because he was a very prominent man. It wouldn't have mentioned where he was buried. If you didn't find any other Bastions in Moultrie Co. that info is probably lost by now.

I did try the Dubuque Co. 1854 census, and turned them up there, so that was a good find.

Thanks for all you've found so far. Every little bit helps.

Doris

Hi Doris,

I got to the library today, but no one was there so I couldn't check on Ancestry. Maybe I can next week. Anyway, I checked the Moultrie county cemetery books. The only Bastion I found was buried in a cemetery southeast of the town of Sullivan. Here is what I found:

Greenhill Cemetery
Bastion, Eva - died 22 Feb 1869

If you are sure both Nicholas and Eunice died and are buried there, then it is possible they are buried in the same cemetery. Is she the daughter who was born in 1862?

Hope this helps!

Linda

1865 5yr census NS Bastion Central IL

Thanks to the help of a kind soul on the list, I've been able to narrow down all but one of the 5-yr censuses I need. I haven't gotten the answers yet, but I know the ones I'm looking for!

But I'm left with one where I don't know the county to ask for. Here at least is what I do know.

Nicholas Schermerhorn (usually just NS) Bastion (occasionally Bastian) b. NY 1808 was somewhere in central IL in 1865. I'd like to get the 5-yr census on him, to pin that down. Here's what I do have on both sides of that date.

1859-1864 Bastion pastored the Disciples church in Shelbyville, Shelby Co. IL
1859 son Nicholas S. jr. b. Matoon, Coles Co. IL
1860 should be in the US census in Shelby Co. but I can't find it there--or anywhere else
1863 dau. Eunice J. b. Shelbyville, Shelby Co. IL
1866 dau Eva b. Tuscola, Douglas Co, IL
1867-1874 pastored Disciples church, Sullivan, Moultrie Co .IL
1869 dau Eva d. Sullivan, Moultrie Co. IL

So in 1865, I am assuming Bastion was in Shelby Co, Douglas Co, or Moultrie Co.

But I can't find him there--or anywhere else in IL. It doesn't make sense that he would be outside of IL. Can someone help, please?

The problem may be one of names. Every member of the family has their first names massacred in the 1870 or 1880 US censuses, which I do have, including older daughters Jennie b. 1854 IA, and Myra b. 1857 IA. So it's possible that Bastion is so garbled in its beginning that I can't find it. I've tried soundex, but if the beginning is wrong, even soundex may not be able to fix it. Maybe someone can come up something creative and crack the code. I'd greatly appreciate it. I've got several years when I just don't know for sure where this family were living, and because I do have SO MUCH on them would really like to fill in the blanks.

Thanks so much,
Doris Waggoner
Seattle
Linda,

That IS a help. I won't go off looking for 5-year census data that doesn't exist! NS died in Adams Co, tho they were living in Moultrie Co. Long story. I've got his death certificate from Adams Co. I've got Eunice's obit from 1891, fortunately, since she kept the Bible records after he died, so of course didn't record her death. Haven't asked for her death certificate yet.

I can understand his having been missed in 1830 and 1840, moving around. But in 1860 I know he was settled for several years before and after, so that one surprises me.

Once they settled in Sullivan and he was a Desciples minister there, they stayed put. He retired, and they were poor, so he went to various parts of central IL on "interims" and guest preaching. They're both in unmarked graves, in a known cemetery in Sullivan.

The tax assessment record is a HUGE new clue. I hope someone can help with that. I'll start a new thread with a new heading for that one. "V" for "N" is no weirder than "U" for "N" after all. It may well be for the school in Sullivan. We don't have very good records on exactly when he owned the school, so if that's it, it would be great.

Thanks,
Doris

Hi Doris,

I can understand how frustrated you must be. Okay, first of all, there is no 1875 or 1885 state census for Illinois. There is only 1825 - 1865. I checked all of them for any variation of the spelling, but didn't find him listed.

I also checked 1830, 1840, and 1860 census records, but he isn't showing up at all, under any variation of the spelling.

I checked on-line death records, but didn't find anything for Moultrie county, where you said they died. I suggest you contact the County Clerk's office in Sullivan, Moultrie county, to see if they can pin down a death date for Eunice and N.S. Bastian.

Since you said they moved every 1-3 years, I'd say they simply got missed on the census's you can't find them on. They were probably on the move at that time.

There is listed on Ancestry a U.S. Tax Assessment record for a V.S. Bastion. I don't have Ancestry, but if someone else does, they might be able to tell you what county it is for and what it is about.

Sorry I couldn't have been more help.

Linda
Linda,

1880 is the year his name got transcribed as US--I have the image, and it's a badly written N! Only Myra is correct, and some of the others are wrong in the image--poor "Unca" is really Eunice, and she's wrong in ALL the few censuses I've got for her. At least I've got his Bible so I know the real spellings, and the name got passed down to the present day.

Maybe it would help if I give dates I've got for where he was when, and the birth dates and places for the children, and the census years I've already got. Since he was a Methodist minister, and they have some decent records, I know where he was when he was a Methodist. They tended to move ministers every 1-3 years. He later became a Baptist and then a Christian (Disciples of Christ) minister. Gets confusing and complicated.

1808 b. Montgomery Co. NY.
I'm hoping to find someone willing to do a cemetery lookup in Elmwood Cemetery. I am trying to find Maurice Glenn Ritchie, born 11 Oct 1900. I know his wife Florence M. Keplinger Ritche was buried there around 12 Oct 1985. Any help would be appreciated. I haven't been able to find any death information other than to confirm that he did pass away prior to his wife (via her obituary). A digital photo would be great, but even just jotting down what is on their headstones would be a big help.

Thanks
Aimee

Hi,
I'm hoping someone out there can help (fingers crossed), if only to point me in the right direction.
I'm looking for descendants of two members of my family.
1. George Baff (aged 25), his wife Mary and baby daughter moved from Scotland, UK to the US in 1853, moving to Illinois in 1854.
2. William Baff, his cousin, born 1847, moved to the US in the late 1860's, married Nancy Mariah Pomeroy from Illinois and they moved to Rock Island.
They had four children George (who remained unmarried) Mary (married Peter Marx had two children, Roy and Grace), Thomas (married Clara and had 2 children Floyd and Zelah - Floyd later married Mary producing Joyce and Archie), and William (married Florence and they had two daughters, one I believe called Genevieve)
I've tracked William through Ancestry and the census material which details his Scots heritage, but I've had no luck with George b. 1828.
Our family still lives in Scotland and it would be great to reconnect with our lost family branch.
I've left messages on Ancestry for members of public trees, and on the Rock Island message board hoping for some clues, but with no replies.
It's difficult to get a hold of contact info for modern day "Baffs" who may be connected, from this side of the world, even with the internet....
Help.......please!
Any hints gratefully received.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Cheers,

June Black (nee Baff)

5-year census--NS Bastion

My gg grandfather was Nicholas Schermerhorn Bastion, usually known as NS Bastion, once showing up in a US census as US Bastion, and sometimes as Bastian. He lived in various IL counties after 1830. His dates were 1808-1884, and after sometime in the 1860s he lived in Moultrie Co. He died in Adams Co, though his home was Moultrie Co. at the time of his death. I'm missing several US census years for him, so would love to have the 5-year IL census figures. He was an itinerant preacher most of his life, which may be why I can't find him. I know that once I know where he was when, I can ask some kind soul to look for the image on Ancestry. But where do I look for the index?

And if anybody can find him in US census data in IL in 1830 (when I think he was in an IL county near St. Louis MO), 1840, 1860, and 1880 (I know he was in Moultrie Co. in 1880 but can't find him), that would be wonderful too.

Thanks, Doris Waggoner

Convicted of murder in Illinois and served in Joliet. As the story goes, he died of a heart attack the day he before he was to be released. He was 41 (about 1980).
Uncle Larry???

I've been searching for you on and off for several years now. I'd really like to know that song you sang to me as a baby. My oldest Gillie is too old for it now, but our youngest Frankie is just the right age - 14 months.

I've often wondered what became of you, Karen, Mathew and Curtis. My only family now are my wife, children and my wife's family (all in Norway.) It's lonely, and the kids have no extended family - no big family camping trips or special family dinners....

We live in New Mexico now - Alamogordo. Have for just over a year now. Before that we were in Norway since 2002.

If you ever feel like dropping an email, my address is my last name at gmail.com. I'd really love to hear from you. A visit would be awesome. We have a guest room and lack for nothing. Nearly 8 acres and sunsets that are astounding.

Miss you and really hope to hear from you....

Gil

James Cox (son to Fred Cox said his father (Fred was 8 or 9 when his dad (Walter Cox)left. That would make it 1893 or 1894. So that means he was with Nancy to have all the children.
Lizzie Cox died as an infant.
Ida May was sent to live with the Ferguson family in Wayne Co., Iowa. In the 1880 Census, she would have been around 9 years old.
Henry Cox was living in Unionville, Putnam, Missouri in 1930. He had no children. He had a wife because I have a picture of him and her. I don't know who she is. It is thought that he was bgorn earlier, before 1870. If that is the case then maybe he was old enough to take care of himself when Walter ran away.
Leroy Cox was listed as living with his mother Nancy when she was working in the Duble household in the 1880 Iowa State Census. His daughter Ida May Cox Dieken in
South Dakota told me over the phone that Walter only had 4 children before he left, and that possibly Leroy found out where his father went and followed him when he was older. Sarah Cox was listed in the 1880 Iowa State Census as living with her mkother Nancy when Nancy was working in the Duble household. It is also noted that Sarah's third husband was Albert Harrison Huntley, married in 1904, who also married her younger sister Minnie Cox in 1914. Mary Delilah Cox, Joanna Jane Cox, Walter and Wallace Cox (twins), and Frederick Cox, (my grandfather), Minnie Cox, and Herman Cox is not mentioned in connectiuon with Walter. information I received from Deloris Castor, (granddaughter).

This is just a suggestion -- not a solution. Given that the people you mention have very distinct names (Glen Woodmansee, Chester Dickhut, Beatrice Dickhut, etc.) I would try to find their obituaries. It is likely that June is mentioned in them -- with her married name, if married.

is she at list of Ellisisland?
for 1921 there is stated a Margaret Gruber from "Birik", Slovakia. think there is a misspelling of the town-name and also is not correct slavic but sounds similar to your Bereg....she was 27 and and married and with her came also a Margaret age 1. both to find at list for M. Gruber at Nr.30 and 31.
http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/search/matchMore.asp?FNM=M...
also a 3rd person is stated, but not easy to find in the long Gruber-list, as on the ship-manifest is no first- and lastname stated. they went to brother Sebastian Gruber, 4500 Indiana Ave. in Chicago. as Margaret, line 4 (baby line 6) is married and not to see who is the first at line 4 think this person must be a brother -in-law of her.
my guess would be, that this child must be the person you are looking for, or not?
so my question is if you are sure about Jugoslavia? no idea if anything would fit i found and not sure if Bereg now in hungary is meant. but think the persons must be yours.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bereg_County
Bereg is one of the oldest counties of the Hungary. In 1920 the Treaty of Trianon assigned most of the territory to Czechoslovakia. The southwestern part remained in Hungary (county Szatmár-Ugocsa-Bereg).

i just see that there is a big mistake at the passengerrecord - it states ethnicy jugoslavian, slovak.
a slovak is never and was never a jugoslavian. Jugoslavia is far away from the area! so if this persons your ancestors, so they were slovaks not "jugoslavians". :o)
little Margareta was 7 months old when she arrived at May 07, 1921 in N.Y. on ship "France" coming from the habour Le Havre in France. so must have been born nearly Oct.1920.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslavia
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/europe/fm_yugoslavia_pol96.jp...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovakia
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/images/europe/slovakia.jpg

Re: Duble family in Illinois

Update - - According to 1915 IA State Census Collection, William was living in a county home in 1915. I haven't found him in 1920 so I'm guessing he died between 1915-1920. Nancy Coffman Cox only had 2 children (Roy & Sarah) living with her when she was working for the Duble family in 1880. Where was her oldest (Ida) who would have been about 10 yrs old at the time? Living with relatives? If Walter ran off and Nancy was forced to go to work in 1880, she must have been still seeing Walter as her last child was born in 1891. Was Nancy living with the Duble family all those 11 yrs? Nancy and William married about 1894 (1900 census says they were married 6 years). By 1910 they are living apart. Also in the 1915 Iowa special census - Nancy states she is divorced and William says he is widowed. I'll keep everyone posted as to my findings. Please keep in touch - together we may solve this mystery!
Sincerely, Susan
