James “Elmo” Casey was born Aug. 27, 1907 in
Shelby County, to James Henry and Lydia
Carpenter Casey and departed this life on Oct. 22, 2009. Mr. Casey celebrated his 102 birthday with a gathering in Mt. Eden,
Kentucky on Aug. 29, 2009. As a special commendation, the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky presented him with a citation for being an outstanding citizen and living life to its fullest. He lived in
Leesburg, Florida from 1994 to 2007. Since March 2007 he has resided with his son and family in
Williamsburg. Mr. Casey had two children, Virginia Louise and Charles Newlen of Louisville,
Kentucky and James Elmo and Oleta Casey, Jr. of
Williamsburg. He had six grandchildren, Scott Newlen and Mark and Cherie Newlen of Louisville; Sibyl and Don
Stricklin, Williamsburg; Lyndon and Alith Casey, Grand Island, Florida; Jeffrey Casey, Greensburg, and Barry and Terry Casey,
Mercer County. There are six great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, Erica
Stricklin and Michael Cole of
Denver, Colorado; Christine Casey, of Grand Island, Florida; Zachary,
Shelby, Rachel, Gillian and Riley Jo Casey all of
Kentucky. Other close relatives are five nieces and nephews, Jane Casey, Joyce
Cloyd, Judy
Turner and Don Casey of
Shelby County and Bobby Casey of
Frankfort. Elmo was a
Kentucky Colonel of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky, a charter member of the Mt. Eden Ruritan Club and a member of the Mount Moriah
Baptist Church in Mt. Eden. He was also former Director of Missions in
Green County. He was an avid sportsman; hunting, fishing and horseback riding most of his life. In 1962 he retired from farming. Elmo was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna, of 72 years in 1997, three brothers; Ernest, Meredith or
Pete, Everett and two sisters, Ethel and Velma Frances. He was loved and honored by family and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at the Shannon Funeral Home with burial in the
Grove Hill Cemetery. Visitation took place at 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Mt. Moriah
