Re: 1860 Voter Reg. St. Louis area - Lookup

I am not aware of where to find voter lists for St. Louis during this time period. As an alternative, let me suggest city directories which are available here on ancestry.com.

I have had some luck finding relatives in St Louis using these records, although they are not well indexed (you have to scroll through a lot of pages looking for the person you want).

It looks like ancestry has a partial directory for 1863 and a pretty complete one for 1864. That may help you find what you need.

Good luck!
Anyone know of the names of box manufacturing companies in St. Louis City in the first have of the 1900's? My great grandfather, Joseph Preis (b.1863 Germany, d. 1947 St. Louis) was a box maker and I am curious as to the company he worked for and if any company records or web sites are available. The company may have been owned/run/operated by the GROVE family.

Thanks in advance.
Joe

Hello,
I was hoping to find someone who had access to the 1860 Voter Reg. indexes or cards. In San Francisco these were a huge help in putting my family back together.

I'm trying to find my gggf and his little family. In the 1860 Census I think they are living in St. Louis (Indep. City) he is working as a Carpenter he also had been a labor and piano forter. I'm trying to find an actual street they lived on so I can narrow down the churches, as at the time there where many in the small area.

His name:
John L. McLaughlin (he may have not used the L. at that time period)
Born: 1831 approx. Ireland
Wife: Elizabeth Scranton
Came to the states in 1834 approx.
May have just come from Boston, MA

Any help getting into a Voter list in St. Louis would be great.
(they were there from 1858-1865 approx.)

Thank you,
Cathie

I am based in the UK and am carrying out research for an academic thesis. I have a transcription of a report of the death of a young child named Kenneth W. Edler, who died in St Louis on 25 July 1906, having fallen from a window. His parents were Sheldon and Jennie Edler. The transcript does not have any source details, and I am very keen to get a copy of the actual article. It must be from a St Louis publication, but I do not know which. I wondered if anybody might be prepared to carry out a search for this article on my behalf. I would also be interested in any other articles relating to this incident.

Any assistance would be very gratefully received.

Simon

Hi Michelle:

Very interesting! Produce Row is still there, but it is now located about 1.5 miles north of Washington Avenue near Broadway and North Market. I never heard it referred to as Commission Row.

I didn't think of National Candy, but I know that building. I think the third street bordering the block is Meramec. Here is some information about the building, from when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places:

http://route66news.com/2009/11/13/st-louis-factory-building-...

I believe the City Sanitorium is now referred to as the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Hospital. The original building is a beautiful coupola-domed structure visible from almost anywhere in the southwest part of the city. Here's a bit more information:

http://dmh.mo.gov/slprc/history.htm

Thank you, Tim, and apologies for not being more specific. The censuses were between 1910 and 1940. What I learned this morning (after my friend spoke with an 87 year old aunt) is that Commission was a euphemism for "...Commission Row or Produce Row. It was an area that had rows of different produce houses where retailers (grocery stores) would buy produce. It was on 3rd street off Washington Ave." This makes sense as the son of the "Commission Driver" becomes a vegetable Salesman! Wondering if the Mission Com House (where he was a salesman also) might somehow be related. In addition, the Candy stores were National Candy Company on Gravois Street near Chippewa (STL) and Marvoks (spelling?) Candy Company (STL).
Thank you for the links. I will definitely be looking at that information, as well.
Next stop - info on the Sanitarium on Arsenal off Kings Highway. (I've not lived or have any relatives in the St. Louis area, so I have MUCH to learn).
Thanks again, Tim! I appreciate your assistance!
Michelle

A little more context might help with all of these questions. What time period are we talking about (which Census?) What part of town did they live in?

For the driver/teamster, my first thought: is it possible that he worked "on commission" rather than for a specific Commission? Could this be a way of saying he was an independent contractor or got paid by the haul?

As far as the candy factory, a few possibilities come to mind. Bissinger's Chocolates is still in business, with a retail location on McPherson in the Central West End and a factory in the Midtown area on Gratoit Street. Here is some information on Bissinger's history:

http://www.bissingers.com/aboutus/aboutus.php?page=history

And a blog post from a local resident who toured their current plant:

http://nickidwyer.typepad.com/nicki/2011/04/in-case-you-miss...

Switzer's Candy was located just north of Downtown along the Riverfront. Here is their history from their current webpage:

http://www.switzercandy.com/about/our-story

Finally, there was a candy factory in deep south St. Louis (possibly in Lemay, St. Louis County) which made SweetTrats. I don;t think they opened until the 1950's, and closed within the last 5 years.

Nothing comes to mind for "Mission Com House."

Hope this helps!

Tim

Adoption, Vandeford

My Grandfather was born in 1938 and was given up for adoption along with a younger brother (by about a year.) He was placed through the St. Ann's orphanage in St. Louis Missouri and shortly after became fostered by Harry and Theresa Hunter by April of 1940.

We just recently found out he was adopted under the name of Lloyd Vandeford. My family is looking for his paternal family. From old family stories my grandmother contacted my grandfathers mother by the name of Vera, when my mother was a child, but my grandfather Lloyd wanted no part of it at the time. sadly now this last name is the only source we have to find out our history.

According to a census in the same time he was a ward of the Juvenal court and being fostered by the Hunters in the St. Louis area of Kirkwood, there was a Vandeford Couple living in the St. Louis area by the names of Lloyd Vandeford and Vera Vandeford, and were married according to the 1940 census, Vera was 16 at the time and Lloyd was 22, they had a small son named Lonny. Meaning they would have been young parents at the time of my grandfathers birth.

My family found it interesting that mt grandfather and this Lloyd Vandeford had the same name, and we have no way to tell if my grandfather was originally a Jr.

I am looking for anyone who knows about Vera Vandeford or Lloyd Vandeford, children, other spouses, or their relatives. It is hard to say if this is the right track but I would appreciate if anyone has any type of info within Lloyd and Vera Vanderford, from what I have read they both have been remarried a few time, with Vera, Kush, Vandeford, & Alley.

Please contact me with any info, Thank you!

Employers in St. Louis censuses - Commission and Mission Com House

I am conducting research for a friend whose relatives were from St. Louis. In those records, there is reference to "Commission" as an employer (i.e, he was a driver for "Commission", or a teamster.) Also, there is a reference to a salesman for the Mission Com House. Not being familiar with the area or its history, can anyone provide me with some information on these employers?
Lastly, what was the name of the Candy Factory - it it still there? And did they manufacture a certain kind of candy?
Thank you for your assistance!
Michelle

Next in the unclaimed letter file of the Baltimore Sun Oct 1844. In 1845, June and Sept, he advertised his daguerreian gallery and as a music teacher in the St. Louis Reveille (MO).
He does not appear in any census or city directory that I have been able to find.
Looking for any information about John E Shackford who settled in St Louis around 1820 with his wife Jane C Smallcorn Shackford. I have a copy of his land office grant from 1824, know he ran a business with Gen Ranney, believe he was on the board of aldermen in 1824 and know he worked in the US Senate as Doorkeeper. He left this job in 1827 and returned home for medical reasons and died Aug 16, 1837. Have two questions - 1) why wasn't the probate not finalized till 1841 and 2) trying to verify he had a son George R Shackford and find any information about George.
Cadwallader, Isaac, Leno, John and Helena 'Lena'

I recently discovered Supreme Court documents revealing the identities of my 4th great grandparents Isaac Cadwallader and Leno (lnu), who were the parents of my 3rd great grandfather John Cadwallader, who was mulatto.

John Cadwallader, born 1835 in Mo, and Bettie (lnu) were the parents of my 2nd great grandmother, Hellena 'Lena', Cadwallader, born 1858. Lena Cadwallader married my 2nd great grandfather, George Rambo in St. louis, Mo in 1875. John was a Cooper.

Records seem to indicate George's parents were Smith Rambo and Alma Thompson, but there are documents to the contrary as well, so I am not sure.

My George Rambo, born Dec. 1846, died 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, his death certificate, signed by his son, George states his parents as 'unknown'. George was a 'horsemen'.

I am trying to learn who Leno's, John's mother and Bettie, John's wife, last names (if any) were and the identities of George Rambo's parents.

Leno was referred to in supreme court documents Cadwallader vs West. She was the reason Isaac signed over his estate to Dr West and his wife, Catherine West. The case was appealed, overturned and Isaac's property returned, with no provisions made for my Leno, or Isaac's son, John, the mother of his illegitimate son, but was all inherited by his brother Ezra Cadwallader et all. See the following:

JUDICIAL CASES CONCERNING AMERICAN SLAVERY AND THE -
books.google.com/books?isbn=1575884119
HELEN TUNNICLIFF CATTERALL, JAMES J.
A caveat - please remember the further back we get the "fuzzier" the
data gets!

In this particular case the fuzziness starts at the front
end. Luther's obit says he's the s\o Eli but I've never
seen him listed as a part of Eli's family. Then we get to
Eli and my note say cannot be a child of this family. I
will post a query for Jonathan JARRELL later today to see
if one of y'all can help me.

At the present time I believe Luther Oliver JARRELL had no children.

I'm looking for additional data (middle names, dates, places, spouses,
significant and insignificant others, children and cemeteries) on the
following:

ahnentafel - ???
Using the St Louis Public Library website I found the obituary index. A great tool by the way.

http://www.slpl.org/slpl/gateways/article240117856.asp

It listed my guy, Hugh Robertson in the February 4, 1890 issue on page 5 and again the next day on February 5, 1890 on page 10 for a burial permit.

Can someone give me a clue? I'm 2000 miles away.

Need access to 1890 St Louis Post-Dispatch. It should be on ProQuest but the university library and local library subscriptions do not include this newspaper.

I spoke with one of the children who said that they lived in St. Louis mostly during the winters then the mother & children would return to the farm to raise a big garden during the summers. The father worked for the railroad so did lot of moving around. Anyway, she thought they might be enumerated in Crawford Co. MO but I have gone through the files film by film for the district & they aren't there. So....I have started going through the St. Louis files for different blocks they might have lived in but still no luck so far. Good idea about the phone directory though, I'll have to look into that one. Thanks
PS: I know they didn't move to the Crawford Co., MO farm permanently until 1947.

Very odd. . .I found them in the 1930 Census and assume you have too, but no luck for 1940.

Do you have any other source with an exact address for them in 1939 or 1940? For example, the public library might have old street or telephone directories. Or the 1939 birth certificate for the youngest son might give you an address where they were living. Then you could use an index to find the correct ennumeration district and scroll through until you found that house number.
