Shotgun:

You need to look at the posters OWN family tree to find answers to your questions:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/45258408/person/6334558965

Also, when you post and post double... go back and delete any extra's...

The parenthesis were after Daniel's name... HE was the one that died.
The Montana Death Index:
Daniel Anderson, age 60, died 21 Dec 1911, 54:001 (Index Number).

This person has a LOT of information on Daniel, Mary, Philomena. The research must include Canadian as well as US census, books, other websites. It will take some research to fully discover any relationship of Mary to the other women.

My g-grandmother was Mary Anderson, wife of Daniel (murdered 12/25/1910). I've found at least 10 spellings of her last name so am having trouble finding family history. Her cousin, Mary Jarvis testified at the trial in January 1911 in Havre, and she probably had a sister Philomena Belgarde.
Does anyone have any information on Daniel Anderson, Mary Jarvis (married name), or Philomena Belgarde (married name).

Possible maiden names: St. Dennis, Saint Denis, Sandone, Sadenee, Sandury, Sandeny, Sandoney, Sandaney, Sanderly, Sanden.

Arrest data would be held by the Court Clerk for whatever jurisdiction the crime occured. "Most" DUI incidents are misdemeanors, usually heard at the County Court (district versus Superior). A fatal injury would be held at the Superior Court of that area due to it being a felony. A felony conviction would send the inmate into the State Corrections facility.

Records for the local DUI's would depend on what system is being used in that location. For court records 1930's, 40's, 50's, etc., the actual case histories are probably now in microfiche/microfilm. There "might" be an index identifying case names, i.e. State of Montana vs Daniel C. McDonald, then with case number. The actual documents for that/those cases would then be on a following microfiche by case number. OR, the case names might be in the "big book" (a red colored book of cases, an 18x24" book). If so, one might have to read down each page to find the names, if you don't have the dates. I doubt you are looking for a case by case listing of his convictions.

However, for the felony, it might be easier to find. The 1972 case documents are probably also archived. They would be held by the Clerk of the Missoula COunty Courts:
http://www.co.missoula.mt.us/coc/

The Missoula Police Department does not release records:
http://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/index.aspx?NID=443
They recommend the Montana State Criminal Records Bureau.

This reference "might" be helpful in your quest, but you'd probably have to have someone to do the leg work:
http://nwda.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv90306/op=fstyle.as...

I am looking for information about a Daniel Clifford McDonald, born around 1919 in Killdeer, ND. He was married to my grandmother Bettye Lou VanVleet McDonald, and the father or her four children Randy, Rory, Danette, and Jody. Their son Jody is my father. I was told that he was incarcerated alot mostly for drunk driving occurences, one being the fatal injury to a 5 year old girl in Missoula around 1972. Supposedly he died around 1986 in Havre, MT. The information I have says that his parents are Fredrick McDonald & Mary Ann Sanderson. Every search has turned into a dead end. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated!

Judy,
Thanks so much for answering and for doing that research! That is my family. 27 Apr 1910 (Stevens Point, WI, newspaper said:) Amy and Mrs. M. Hetzel returned from MT having selected 4 half sections of land that was located by F. B. Polley, son-in-law of Mrs. Hetzel. 25 miles from Harlem, Blaine, MT.

The family went out in early June. A later news article said they returned in the fall by special permission of the US Government because there were no schools in the area of their ranch. I believe they went back the next year and possibly 1912. I'm jsut not sure when they returned to Stevens Point for good. Heard stories from two of my aunts about their adventures. It was a highlight of their childhoods. My father was the youngest.
How might I find land records under Oster or Hetzel?
Thanks so much.

Hi,

Is this the correct family? On 1 June 1905, they were living in Stevens Point, Portage, Wisconsin.

George E. Oster, b. WI, 8/12ths.

Since they seemed to fit, I looked for them in Montana in the Census records but didn't find them. They might have lived there and missed the Census recordings which happens every ten years, for example, 1900, etc.
My grandparents (or just grandmother)from Wisconsin, homesteaded (so the story goes) in Hill County, MT, possibly in Harmon (which I can't find on a map but know it was very near the Canadian border). I have only scraps of information. My Aunt Lorraine b. Aug 1894 said, "Mother was adventurous. She and a friend decided to go. It was when they were just opening the territory...I think if you went out, the government gave you...acreage. We arrived in Havre, Montana. It was near Great Falls. Anyway, we got off the train and into a stagecoach." I think she said it was a long ride.
She also remembered that toward the end of their stay, she and a sister (Evelyn b. Dec 1892) had dates to go horseback riding. They road into Canada and because there were few roads, they got lost, not getting home until very late at night.
I also remember that my uncle Fred b. Dec 1900 spent the last day riding over the prairie to say goodbye to his Indian friends.
I'm not even sure if "homesteading" is officially what they did, or if it was just a term my aunt used for a short time adventure, but I did get the idea that there was land ownership involved.
If you see anything in this write-up that gives you a clue, please let me know how to proceed.
Thanks for reading it,
Nancy Oster Heydt

I have been looking for this Baxendale family for several years, and just found that they were in Havre.

My connection is on the Mamie Raustad side and have lots of data there. I would love to get more info on the rest of the family.

I was looking in Havre as I have a distant relative who died there in 1922. He was unmarried and went there alone about 1900, as far as I know. He was a distant cousin to Mamie, and both families came from Voss, Norway.

Her name was Mamie B. Raustad. I wonder how the B. became "Bedelia". I don't know of any Norwegian name like that, although she was born in North Dakota.
When you post, post the link to your family tree, on the person you seek. This helps identify what information you know and your sources.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/35147254/person/18754459878

Yes, both were listed on the Montana Death Records as death on 12 Dec 1922. I would not rule out a mistake in the records. This happened on a regular basis back in that time period, or in transcription.

The 1930 Census does show them as living in "Grainbelt," however, that was the name of a school district (historical). There is a Grainbelt cemetery currently in that area.

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
issued under the Homestead Act (and other Congressional Land Acts):
http://www.legendsofamerica.com/ah-homestead.html
It shows John H. Hays obtained 155.26 acres of land on 7/1/1919 in Hill County, located at Township 32 N, Range 14 East, Sections 2 and 3, the majority being in Section 2, the South West quarter portion of the North West Quarter of the Section; and in Section 3, the South East quarter portion of the North East quarter of the Section.

This land is located at:
http://msrmaps.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=12&X=72...
You'll see red squares on this topographic map, these are Sections. A Section is one square mile in size and contains 640 acres, a quarter section has 160 acres. On this map, you'll see a red colored "2" and "3" in the center of the squares, that is the Section Number. Looking at Section 2, divide it in half both horizontally and vertically. Those would be quarter sections. His land in Section 2: the South West quarter portion of the North West Quarter of the Section. Looking at this Section, this land would be in the top left quarter of that Section. Divide that quarter section into quarters, his land would be in the bottom left quarter...or about where the word Burnham is shown. In Section 3, his land is in about the same area, but on the Section 3 side of the word Burnham.

Now that you found the location of the land, you can zoom out (top left corner of the topomap, to see the general area. It's between Fresno and Havre.

Based on the year, I wouldn't expect to find an obituary. There might be a reporter column about the deaths (that was a "true" obituary in this time period). There might be a death notice.

The Montana State University has an Ask-a-Librarian program (these are found through out the US):
http://www.lib.montana.edu/ask/
Ask what resources they may have as far as newspaper microfilms for Havre, Hill County. Ask first if they do the research given your death date information.

I'm seeking information on the deaths of the mother and father of this family in December 1922. In 1920, John H. (b. 1873) and Anna C. [Heumann, b. 1885] Hays were living in Grainbelt, Hill County. Their children were Harry (b. 1906), Alphord (b. 1906-probably adopted), Roy James (b. 1908-Custer, SD), Marjay [Mary] Ellen Hays (b. 1909-also possibly adopted), Dodson Berman Hays (b. 1911), and May Christina {b. 1914).

John and Anna both died on December 12, 1922. I'd like to know how they died: influenza? accident? Even if there is no particular mention of them, is there any information about something happening in the area at that time, such as an epidemic event?

All of their children survived and lived full lives (except for one daughter who died at age 1). I'm trying to find out about their lives immediately after their parents' death. Where did they go? Who did they live with? (Anna's family, Heumann, lived in Custer, South Dakota.) I know that the youngest, May, was working at the hospital in Havre in 1930, and was living there as well.

I would really appreciate any information.

Wow, Ron thank you so much for the detail, and your kindness in reviewing my situation!!

I am not aware of any other Tom McMillan's from our family.

I'll review a few things for others who might be helped by my doing so.

Thanks for your comment about the obituary. Obviously, I made a judgment with no evidence.

Regarding the 1900 census, there are other errors. William John McMillan was born August 24, 1847 in Canada. I have his record saved to my family tree. William John did come to Minnesota in 1879. Anderson's maiden name was Anderson Todd, and she shows up as Anna and Annie. She is on the 1841 Scotland census as 1 year old, so may have been born in 1840 or 1841. I believe Robert Orr McMillan was born May 8, 1871, as evidenced by the actual birth record saved at my tree. Robert did get a law degree and tried to get a start as a lawyer, but it's said he could not afford to set up his own practice. Anderson and the children did come to Minnesota about a year later than William John in 1880, as shown on the 1910 census for the family. This agrees with a written family history giving information about Anderson's difficulty dealing with the children during her travel by train to Minnesota in 1880.

It has seemed odd that the date on Robert's gravestone is 1961. That may have been when he was buried, but he died December 26, 1960. I have a copy of the death certificate which shows this date.

Thanks again for your insight and observations.

Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

It saves you the problem of posting a lot of your known information, and saves you from getting a lot of information you already know...such as what I'm posting.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/17466665/person/514922858

First to correct...again...found by the other person:
It was the 1910, repeat 1910 Census, for Alder (Not Alderton) Pierce Co, WA
Robert O (Not ORR) McMillan (Not McMillian), age 49, born in Canada to father born Scotch (spoke gaelich), mother born in Canada, immigrated in 1880/Naturalized. Spoke English, Rigger in a logging camp.
Obviously NOT the correct person.

Robert's obit mentioning children is NOT a "should have shown children." Obits are NOT a repository of family information, especially if there were children and "disappeared" due to divorce. I'm getting tired of correcting off the top of the head, shotgun, comments such as this. There is NO proof in an obit of anything.

I know you have the below, I always review what I can find for research, just to put a few extra pieces in the puzzle. I'm also posting it for the message archives, and for those researchers not having access to your tree. I'm also leaving WRONG people posted for future eliminations.

The 1900 Census of St Paul, Ramsey Co, MN
William McMillan, born Feb 1846, Canada to both parents born in Ireland, immigrated in 1879/Na(Naturalized), Ry Pass Conductor, renting, married 34 years.
Anderson T(?), wife (Anna?), born Feb 1846 in Scotland, mother of 14/9 living
Robert O, born May 1872 in Canada, immigrated 1879, Lawyer(?)
Stuart, Sept 1874; Annie, Feb 1879; Ellen, May 1880; Margaret, Mar 1882(Minnesota). Only "mistake" I see here, Ellen, age 20, born in Canada, May 1880, but immigrated in 1879.

The WA Digital Archives: http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Home
does have an image copy of the marriage return of the 28 August, 1903 marriage.
-Robert Orr McMillan, age 30(1872/1873), born in Ferguson, Ontario, a clerk, father William McMillan, mother Anna Todd.
-Agnes J Casey, 24(1878/1879), born in Chicago, father William C(?) Casey, mother Magareth Gorman, witnesses W. Ferland and B. Anderson.

The 1910 Census for Havre, Chouteau Co, MT
Robt O (transcribed as Robo), age 35(1874/1875), born in Canada(English [versus French Canadian]) to father born in Canada, mother in Scotland, immigrated in 1878, Trainmaster/GnRy. married 8 years
Agnes J, age 31(1878/1879), born in Illinois to both parents born in Ireland, mother of 1/none living.

The WWI Draft Registration. His full DOB: May 8, 1872, matches with 1900 Census. This registration, the last for WWI, had about half of those I have researched had the year of birth off by one year. This one appears to be correct. This one is also VERY rare in having his actual height "69" inches and weight 235 shown.

The 1920 Census for Lancaster, Kittson Co, MN, shows a Robert C. McMillan, age 48(1871/1872), born in Ontario to both parents born in Ontario, merchant/general store. Married to Nellie with 8 children.
--In 1910 was in Lancaster with Nell. Eliminate.

The 1920 Census for School District 33, Yellowstone Co, MT
Agnes C (Casey ?) McCarthy, age 41, born in Illinois to both parents born in Ireland, wife of:
Michael J. McCarthy, age 45, born in IL to both parents born in Ireland, farmer
Clark G?/J? 15, UT; Nolan, 12, IL; Helen 10, IL; Wayne, 8, IL
--Found in thr 1910 Census in Nelson, Lee County, IL. NOT the correct Agnes.

The 1920 Census for Chicago, Cook Co, IL
James McTighe, head, age 52, widower, born in IL to both parents born in Ireland
Agnes Casey, sister-in-law, age 40, born in IL to both parents born in Ireland.
McTight children: James, 22; John, 21; Raymond 17.
--In 1910, Chicago, James McTighe, age 40, born IL to both parents born in Ireland, salesman, drygoods
Sophie(1871/1872), age 38, mother of 5/4 living, born in IL to both parents born in Ireland
Thomas, 16, James 15, John 12, Raymond 7.
---This Sophie born about 1871/1872 was the same age of Catherine as shown in your family tree; however, the 1900 Census of St. Paul showing the Casey family, shows Catherine born Oct 1874, brother William April 1874 (an impossible match of DOB's). The 1880 Census shows "Katie" as being 9 (Agnes is 4 [1875/1876] ). So, it doesn't appear this Sophie was related to this Casey family.
--The IL Marriage Index 1763-1900: shows James McTighe married Sophia Casey on 8/7/1893 in Cook Co.

I did find your entry on Find-a-grave for Robert:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...
It showed his DOB as 1874, 1873 and your note showing the actual as being May 8, 1871, while other records (above) showed 1872. His date of death was shown as 1961, where the other data is showing 1960.

The Independent Record, Helena, MT
13 Oct 1953: Deed transfer from James and Agnes Josephine Casey...block 25 of Broadwater addition.
--This couple had a daughter M. Clare Gibson, who died April 18, 2004 in Billings. She was born in Franklin, MN. Probably not the correct Agnes J. Casey, as far as being married to McMillan.

Not much more I could locate for either of them. Your obit for Robert might have the missing pieces that I don't see, but don't need to know them. I base my genealogy research on not making assumptions. I wouldn't assume a divorce or death of Agnes, in or out of Montana. The years 1918/1919 had a major influenza epidemic in the US, death possible. Divorce possible. The fact neither one of them are evident in 1920 or 1930 is not "unusual" but there should be a record somewhere of them. Your "legislature" clue needs research. Montana is one of those States where "privacy" is a problem for research.

You, living in WA, need to do a road trip... gather potential information and go.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Do you want further information on the location?

When you post, post the link to your family tree:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9214801/person/-836727069?ssr...=
That will prevent you having to provide all the information you already have on the family to prevent obtaining a lot of information you already have, also for the volunteers that can't find the information.

I looked over your tree and did research on a "Patrick Riley," in Montana without success.

Thank you Judy!!

I do have Robert's obituary. The print is very poor, but I can make most of it out. It doesn't mention either children or his wife. From that I assumed she was deceased or they may have divorced, and must not have had any children at the time of his death.

I do have his draft record as you kindly detailed.

I hadn't previously seen or been aware of the reference to logging in Washington, so perhaps that's him. Family lore doesn't mention logging, but you never know? Robert's Mother and siblings did immigrate from Canada to Minnesota in 1880, so that fits. His Father became naturalized, which did naturalize the wife and children at that time. Did you find the Washington state info in the 1920 census?

I did find one year he was involved with the Montana legislature I found at a Montana site.

Thanks so much!!
Hi Tom,
I had the same problem you did. I didn't find anything for Robert after the 1920 Census.

On Sept. 12, 1918 Robert Orr Mcmillan was living in Barnville?, Sheridan Co., MT.
Born: 8 May 1872, Canada
Occupation: Conductor G. N. Ry, Barnville?
Nearest Relative: Agnes J. McMillan, Barnville?
Slightly crippled in left foot.
Source: World War I Draft Registration Cards 1917-18.

I did find a Robert O. McMillian in 1920 living in Alderton, Pierce Co., Washington.
Robert McMillian, b. Canada-English, 49, immigrated 1880, naturalized, boarder, single, logging.

I'd contact Montana State Genealogical Society, rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtmsgs/ to hopefully find more information about Robert and Agnes.

If he served two terms in the Montana Legislature, that should be written up in a book. I'd go to my local library and search for a book about who served in the Montana Legislature. If the book is housed in a Montana library, your local library can request inter-library loan.

Robert's obituary should mention children. I'm not familiar with Saint Paul or Ramsey Co. obituary sources. You can post that you're looking for a copy on the Ramsey County Minnesota Message Board. Successful Searching & Happy Holidays!

First some Norwegian background data:
Patronymics, the naming system in Scandinavia. It "officially" ended turn of the 1900's; but still in use in the 1800's enough to strongly believe the family names were patronymic, especially Joseph Johnsen's. In Patronymics, a Magnus Olsen having a son Sven, Sven would be Sven Magnusen/Magnussen/etc. His son Iver, would be Iver Svensen/ssen/etc. Many Ole Olsen's had son's Ole. The naming rules of the family to name the children after the grandparents also continued this problem. Since there were billions of Ole Olsen's, they added the "address" to the name. The address was usually the farm name. So, if Ole Olsen was born on the Stenbraaten farm, he would be Ole Olsen Stenbraaten. When he grew up and moved to the Stenbakken farm, he would be Ole Olsen Stenbakken. If Ole Olsen had a daughter Inga, she would be Inga Olsdatter and would be so named the rest of her life.

Here is some guides to Norway genealogy.
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/articles.html

I spent some time on the Norwegian Digital archives
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
looking for the Roland family. Based on births of the children, they left Norway between 1868 and 1870. I looked for any "Rol" beginning last names; any first beginning with Jul, Mart, etc. I spent most of the research time in Rogaland, but their names just didn't come up on the 1865 Census, or the emigrant databases:

Emigrant:
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebMeta.exe?slag=vismeny&am...
Since I did find John "Rolland" returning from Haugesund in 1907, that gives some credence to the births in that parish area. But, patronymic names being what they are, it makes it difficult sometimes to find the persons. I've had a lot of good luck finding, but have sometimes missed only to see someone else find them. Emigration from Norway took two routes, one direct to the new world either in the US or Canada. The other was the transmigration, first to Hull, England, then a carriage, train, etc to the major seaport at Liverpool, or other British ports, THEN to the US or Canada. There are passenger manifests in existence that "might" hold your family; but, the year of passage makes it more difficult to find. There are manifest images to view in a Canadian site, but they are difficult to read online, and you'd have to look at each name. PLUS, you'd have to know under what name they traveled.

Births/marriages/etc. Unfortunately the parish records for Haugesund don't go back far enough.

For Joseph Johnson (Josef Johansen/Johannesen/etc, without a least a fylke (County) to begin, just far to many of them. His middle initial might be actually the patronymic name of his father (Oles or for Olsen) and his Johnson(Johnsen) was the actual last name of his father. Many immigrants used a variety of the family name for their own. However, I'd suspect he was actually Jos* Joh* in Norway. I did find some possibles...but not enough criteria to even identify. Hopefully the land patent data would show more information.

Feel free to contact me when you find more information

Ron Bestrom

I see you are new to posting inquiries on the Rootsweb system, at least under this user name. When you post, it is helpful to volunteers to post the link to your family tree:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/32453547/person/18261536018
This helps volunteers identify the person and exactly what information you already have found on the person. I have seen volunteers identify pages of information, only to see the response, "I already had this information." This also saves you the problem of fully identifying the person, their dates of birth and death and enough information to correctly identify the person. It also saves volunteers time in researching. It also saves you time in telling a volunteer that they found the wrong person. I took a lot of information in your family tree and used it for the research, it helped GREATLY.

Your family tree is very full of information and has the needed source documentation. Good job!

The Montana Death Index:
Joseph Johnson, born about 1864, died on 28 August 1938, no death county shown, but the index number is "Hav2184," which indicates Havre.
You have his Death Certificate, #2184, which identifies his DOB was 25 Feb 1864, but it identified his place of birth as being in Ireland. His residence was shown as Turner, MT. Buried in Chinook, MT., on August 31st. The informant was a Mrs. David Peterson of Ames, IA. Based on your tree records, this person was Grayce E. Johnson, daughter of Joseph, born in Illinois in July 1904, died 31 Oct 2001 in Ames, IA. Her husband was David Carl Peterson, born 1902, died 1963.

Your tree identifies Joseph's wife as Martha Cerline Roland, daughter of John Olson Roland and Julia Anderson.
---The Illinois marriage records show Joseph O Johnson marriage to Carrie "Bowland" on 01/01/1895 in Cook County, IL.
http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/MarriageSearchServlet
So, it appears they were married in Illinois, not in Iowa. It is also proven with the birth of daughter Elsie in September of 1895.

-------Roland family in Norway/Sweden------
Census records show John was born in Norway; however, your family data as written by Martha has his birth in Sweden. I do a lot of Norway genealogy. A lot of persons identified as having been born in Sweden were actually born in Norway. This is sometimes due to the Swedish "occupation/ownership" of Norway during this period. Norway was also under Danish control for a period of its history. Martha is shown born in Rogaland, Norway, 19 Jan 1866. She would not be found in the Norwegian Census of 1865, however, her parents should be found, if living in Norway. John was "possibly" Johan, Patronymic name of Olsen (son of Ole), the "surname" of Roland is possibly from the farm name (Patronymic) of the farm of Roland. But there is no farm of that name in Rogaland in the 1865 Census. Her mother, Julia was probably "Andersdotter" followed by her farm name. The online parish records for Haugesund only are shown from 1873. There were over 62,000 Andersdatter in the 1865 Census. There were no farm names of Oxdahl. Opdahl is a location.
In 1907, John Rolland did visit Norway:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
I did do some looking in the Norwegian archives, but without knowing what information you have, I did very little.

-------Census---------

The 1920 Census for Polley, Blaine County, MT. enumerated 19/20 February.
Joseph O. Johnson, age 55 (1864/1865), born in Norway, immigrated in 1887/naturalized in 1896. Farmer/small grains. Worked on his own accounts/owned his land. He was indicated as being married, but no spouse is shown, your records show she died in 1929.

The 1920 Census for Ames, Story County, IA
Julia Rolland [sic] age 79, widow, born in Norway, immigrated 1870
Carrie (transcribed as Corrie, Carrie/Kari/etc is a normal Norwegian name)., age 52(1867/1868), born in Norway, immigrated 1870, listed as married
Grace, dau, born in IL, age 20(?).

The 1930 Census for Polley, Blaine Co, MT
Joseph O, Johnston[sic, although it "appears" an "X" was written over the "t"], age 66(1863/1864), born in Norway, immigrated 1905/naturalized, widower, farmer/general farm/owned his property. Shown as married, but wife isn't listed.

------------Anna Johnson of Havre County------
--In your family tree, you also show for 1930 Census: For Havre, Hill County, MT.
P.O. Johnson, age 63(1866/1867), born in Norway, immigrated 1890, carpenter/building, age of first marriage 46(1912/1913).
E. Anne (for some reason, many enumerators put the middle initial before the first name), age 58(1871/1872), born in Kansas to both parents born in Pennsylvania, first married age 42(1913/1914). They are found directly below Albert Johnson, age 40 and his wife Inga, 39.
--The 1920 Census for Havre, shows this same couple as Peter O and Anna, with the same information on ages, birth locations and parental birth locations. So, this Anna could not be married to your Joseph O, as she was married to Peter O Johnson. A Mary Baker, born in PA, is living with them as Mother-in-law. So, it appears you can remove this connection from your family tree.

--The land owned in Polley Precinct, Blaine County, MT----

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
issued under the Homestead Act.

It shows Joseph O. Johnson obtained 320 acres of land in Blaine County on June 6, 1916, located at Township 35 North, Range 25 E, Section 15, the West half of the Section.

A Section of land contains 640 square acres on a one mile square area. By entering the land location (Township/Range/Section) into this system:
http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html you can obtain some basic information about the land, and locations of other places. The Polley School (Historic name) was at a distance of 860 meters. The Turner Colony (school and colony) are found at about 3760 meters. So, it appears Joseph did not live in a town/city by the name of Polley; but just in the enumeration/area precinct identified as Polley.

By clicking on the "Switch to Terra Server" you would be transported to another mapping system. Clicking on the largest blue box for size, then on Topo Maps, you would be on a topographic map of the area.

In the first topo map you will see the map is divided into small red and black colored squares, these are the Sections. You'll see the town of Turner and the airport toward the top. You'll also see the word "Turner Colony" in the middle, bottom of the map. Looking at the square holding those words "Turner Colony", the square above has the number "938" in the bottom left corner. Go to the square above this one containg the "938," (one section north). Then go to the left (West) one square and left click in the middle of it with your mouse.

In the next window, scroll down until you see the "938," and again go up one square, then left one square, and again left click in the center of that square.

Now, in this new window, you will see a red colored "15" in the middle of a square, that is Section 15. He owned the West half (left half) of that Section. You can now zoom out to again see the Turner Colony and the town of Turner. Note how the road follows a Section line, then bends at the Turner Colony, goes north again following Section lines, then bends again into the town of Turner.

I would also suggest opening another window using Classic Mapquest:
http://classic.mapquest.com/ Enter the name of Turner, MT. You will see this road, again showing the bends it takes. By zooming into this Mapquest map you can see other minor roads. Clicking on Aerial Map, you can see the land itself.

The application for this land would identify considerable information about him. One requirement for land patents was US citizenship. He, being born in Norway, would have been required to identify that information, where born, and where/when naturalized. Naturalization documents were filed in the Superior Court of a country, and also at US District Courts of the various States. "Most" persons filed in the local Superior courts due to availability. I can give you instructions on the procedure to obtain these records.

The Death Certificate that you have presented does prove the Joseph O. Johnson that died in Havre in 1938 was the correct person as his daughter was informant. That DC also shows the deceased residence was in Turner, MT, which is in Blaine Co. (I did find another Joseph Johnson that had obtained land in Hill County in 1915, but believe he is eliminated as being the correct person). His burial place of "Chinook," Blaine County, was about half way between Havre and Turner.

In your posting, you identified he lived in Polley, "Hill" County, but, he appears to have resided there from at least 1916 to 1930 by Census documentation. His mailing address was "probably" Turner, versus Polley, as Polley doesn't appear to be more than just a location/unicorporated, probably just the precinct name. It is unknown if he "actually" lived in Turner, or just had a Turner mailing address.

Turner is a SMALL town. It "might" have its own newspaper, but probably is served out of Havre. You might wish to also post in Hill County about Joseph. I would suggest posting the link to THIS message into the inquiry at Hill County; OR, at least post the link to your family tree. Identify that Joseph had lived in the Turner, MT; but died in Havre. I'd request the obit from the local newspaper. Identify the FULL date of death in your posting.

For Turner... There is a local Genealogy Society:
http://www.turnermontana.us/Big_Flat_Historical_Society.php
They may or may not do research. There may or may not be a fee or "donation" request, but it is usually inferred.

If you need help in possible identification of Norway roots, identify any additional information you may have on known data/family lore.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

To obtain a copy of Joseph O. Johnson's land patent application:

Here is an example of what "might" be found in the land patent application package. This example is for the Charles Ingalls property (Little House on the Prarie).
http://www.archives.gov/research/land/ingalls/index.html

To obtain a copy of the land patent records issued under the Homestead Act, there are a couple of "better" methods.

1. One method is to visit a National Archives Record Center and view/copy the microfilm records. http://www.archives.gov/locations/order.html

2. By Mail:
Click on http://www.archives.gov/forms/pdf/natf-84.pdf and download the NATF Form 84

3. By online method: Click on the above link and follow the instructions to submit your order online.

When the research staff has located your documents, you will be contacted with the information about how many actual pages were found and the cost for reproduction. I understand the process takes quite some time now.

What information you need:
On the form itself, it gives basic instructions.

For your search, the information needed is located on the BLM data:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/details/patent/default.aspx?ac...
For the records request form:
2. You will be requesting "General Land Entry Files."
3. The name of the "Entry Man:" Joseph O. Johnson.
4. Montana
5. The date of entry: 6/6/1916
6. Section: 15; Township 35N, Range 25E
7. Type of General Land Entry: Homestead Act
8. Document Number: "018549."
9. Name of Land Office: "Havre."
10. "532328"
11. 12. 13. N/A.
The form also indicates, "If available, please attach one cpy of the original land patent, tract book pages, or Bureau of Land Management GLO listing for this land entry." You could copy the original land patent image from the online site above, as well as the window link I've included above. But, if you attach pages, you would probably have to mail your application.

I'll follow up with some additional research in the Norway records. The bulk of the Norway records, Census, emigration, Copies of actual parish records are found at:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...

Ron Bestrom
Thank you so very much for the in depth analysis of Joseph O. Johnson and family attachments. To be truthful I didn't think anyone would know anything about my ggrandfather. He seems to have been a rather reclusive individual.

I want to know where in Norway he was from. Grayce, his daughter, didn't seem to know. Your clue to perhaps the land patent could divulge this info is exciting and if you could help me get that info, as you indicated you could, I would be forever grateful.

The connection to Anna and Peter.O. Johnson was something that I held on to just in case a lead may go there but I kind of knew it was a shot in the dark. I will delete them.

Concerning the Rolands/Olson family. According to John Roland's youngest daughter Anna, who gave a verbal account to her son, her father John was born in Sweden but moved to Norway to live with his aunt. He met Julia Anderson in Haugesund, Norway. Anna also said that Joseph O. Johnson and Martha Cerline (aka Carrie M.) Roland met in Chicago. My grandmother Hazel Louise Johnson and her sister Elsie, and Grayce were born there. Later they moved to Ames, Iowa.

I'm a little confused about the message system. I posted on Ancestry.com message forum. My trees on Ancestry.com are Quinn FTM as well as My Quinn Family. Quinn FTM will soon be my primary tree. I guess Ancestry posts on the Rootsweb system. I also have an older tree on Rootsweb.

Your considerable knowledge about Norwegian genealogy has given me a glimmer of hope about Joseph.

Thanks so much for your quick response and what has had to be a considerable amount of research work. It is greatly appreciated.

Are you a professional researcher? What is your interest in Blain Co. Montana?

Any help you can render is warmly accepted.

Robert Quinn

Robert Orr McMillan GN Conductor and wife Agnes

My Great Uncle was Robert Orr McMillan. He married Agnes Casey in Spokane, WA in 1903, and not too long afterward was working for the Great Northern as a conductor out of Havre, Montana. He is said to have served 2 terms in the Montana legislature. They are on the 1910 census in Chouteau County, but I can't find them on the 1920 or 1930 census? They were in Montana during those years. I'm very curious to know if they had any children? Also, at some point probably about 1940 or after Robert had retired and moved back to St Paul, MN where he died in 1960. However, no mention of Agnes? I wonder if they may have divorced in Montana? I see there is an Agnes J Casey buried in Havre at the Calvary Cemetery who shows as died October 1, 1968. I think my Agnes Casey was born about 1877 in Chicago. Would love to know more about their life in Montana.

Thanks!! Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)
