Thank you so much for the 1870 census record. I know that schmidt is as common in german as smith is in english but I did not expect to find smith as their last name in the census. It is the right family. This gives me leads to follow & hopefully not to a brick wall.
Thank you again,
Bill

Which of the children are you trying to trace? The NY Times (19 Dec 1894) says "Ex-Alderman Hugo Schmidt" was mugged on Skillman Avenue on his way home to 311 Moore Street "which is in a deserted part of the city, known as Sunny Side". Hugo is still at this address in 1900.

Moore Street later became 34th Street, by the way, and on the 1900 Census, Gustave Schmidt's house on Moore apparently sat between Skillman and Middleburg (now 39th) Avenues. That would place it smack dab in the middle of Sunnyside Yards, which were built by the Pennsylvania Railroad a few years later.

I have been trying to find my mothers uncle Louis & aunt Elizabeth Schmidt for several years. I cannot find them or their children beyond 1910. They were in the Long Island City- Astoria area then.I am taking a new approach in looking at siblings of Louis in hopes of leading me to the family. I thank you for your help in the 1870 census list. It will create many new leads.

I gather you know about Louis and Elizabeth's son Clarence, the folk artist?

Oops! Ignore my last post. I was wrong. Louis's older brother Oscar was also a mason and also lived in Queens and also had a son named Clarence, who born in September 1897. And THAT Clarence is the folk/outsider artist - not Louis and Elizabeth's son Clarence, who was born in September 1894. Sorry!

Are you sure about that. I had googled Clarence Schmidt several months ago and I saw all about Clarence the artist, but I figured he was not family as Schmidt is such a common name and he did not fit the Clarence of Louis and Elizabeth. I did not know about the siblings of Louis then.I will have to check him out again.
Thank you for clearing that up.

Well, I was looking at the entries for Oscar and Louis on the 1900 Census - available for free here:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#...

and, initially, after discovering more about the "outsider" artist Clarence Schmidt (born 11 Sep 1897), I assumed that the 1900 enumerator had transposed the birth years for Louis's sons, Clarence (born Sep 1894) and Percy (born Jul 1897). But, in double checking the census for other Clarence Schmidts in Queens, I found Oscar's son Clarence was born in September 1897, and so he is a much more likely candidate for the Woodstock artist.

Even though Schmidt is a common name, Queens wasn't SO densely populated in 1900 - and, on top of that, how many would be masons and plasterers? But it's all still a lot of guessing...

Marriage and death certificates might clear things up.

The Brooklyn Daily Standard Union (01 Jun 1929) reported that a marriage license was issued in Queens for:

Susan SCHICKLING, age 36, of 2521 31st ave., Long Island City
and
Clarence Schmidt, age 37, of 419 Webster ave., Long Island City

I'm assuming THIS Clarence is Oscar's son as that branch of the family lived on Webster (now 37th) Avenue in 1900 in a house Oscar owned. The ages seem a little off, however. And I can't find Clarence the artist's wife's name, so we'll have to wait and see if the pieces fall into place or not.
