The family story is that he was buried alone in Calvary because he was the only Catholic in his family, having converted late in life after his wife had passed away and his children were grown. However it's worth a shot and I'll try this path. Thank you for the suggestion!

Thanks, but that's not him. I've seen that one. It's the wrong birth year.

I had found that in one of the grave search sites online. I contacted the submitter to see if I could find out whether he might have input the birth year in error, but the submitter hasn't gotten back to me.

It stands to reason that there would be innumerable Smiths at a cemetery as big as Calvary, a fair number of which would be named Henry, and apparently more than one who died in 1948.

When I contacted Calvary I gave them not just the birth year of 1948, but the exact date of death (Feb 13), and they did not find him.

Yes, the funeral home is listed on the death certificate and I have contacted them, too; but so far they haven't responded to my inquiry. I will try them again, though.

Thanks for your input!

Barbara

This is a laborious solution, but if Calvary has misfiled or misspelled Henry's dated burial record, this could be your best bet: look for other deaths in his immediate family -- spouse, siblings, offspring. Once you find one with a Calvary burial, call the office.

If Calvary has an alternative name/date of burial, they have a way to locate the a plot card. This will list all burials in that plot by date and name. Henry may or may not be among those on that list.

Looking for Rose Lasser's obituary. She died Aug 1, 1997 in Far Rockaway. She lived in Rockaway or Far Rockaway all her adult life. She had a lot of children and grandchildren, so I'm sure her obituary would give me a lot of information. Where do you think I should start looking? (nothing on legacy.com, obituaries.com, or genealogy bank; also, neither Historical Newspapers nor Obituaries in Ancestry.com turned up anything). Thank you!

My grandfather-in-law, Henry C. Smith, died Feb 13 1947 and his death certificate says he was buried in Calvary a few days later. I called Calvary to find the plot, and was told they have no listing. I called a second time a few weeks later, thinking perhaps the first time was a fluke, and got the same answer. I thought I'd try a few other cemeteries in Queens, just in case the death certificate was wrong, but the first one I called (St Michael's) told me in no uncertain terms that if it's listed on the death certificate, that's where he is. Plus, my husband had always been told he's in Calvary. How can I find out where he's buried? Thanks.

I know they belonged to a Post in Flushing but not sure which one. They were both Commanders of the Post they belonged to at different times. I have written the Post several letters and called and tried to leave message. I am writing History of my family and information on them would really be appreciated. If any one belongs to this post or knows anyone that does maybe they could contact me and I could get information for my history. D.G.
I sent an email with just name and possible year of death. They are in the process of putting their records on computer. If your target person is on their computerized list, a phone call follow up to the email can be helpful. Ericka (think that was her name) is the administrative assistant, so is normally very busy. If she has to go back to the microfiche/microfilm records, there is a $25 research fee. She is very helpful considering how busy she is.

If anyone is planning to go the Calvary, I would very much like information on a headstone for Alex Sherrin(Sheerin).Burial 6 Aug. 1917)
Section 41, Range 332, Lot J - Plot #1. Cemetery office gave me this information and was told there are two other persons buried in this plot, and, unfortunately, I cannot afford the $75 to find out who they are. Can someone help!!! It would be gratefully appreciated!!! A picture would be wonderful - but will settle for info only.

Heather
WHAT You need to do is use the ssdi index and narrow down date of death to atleast month and year.
Also you could use telephone directories to see when she stops appearing.
You could try cemeteries where other family members are buried.
you could try other funeral homes that the family has used in the past.

goodluck
kristina
www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com/newyorkrecords.html
1941 envelope sent by S MUNCRON(?) to Geestacht, Germany from Woodside, Queens

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope that was sent by S MUNCRON(?) to Geestacht, Germany from Woodside, Queens in 1941. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on MUNCRON, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find an S MUNCRON in a census or similar source and wondered if someone more familiar with Queens can find him/her or correctly decipher the spelling of the name. I believe that Geestacht may be his/her or his/her parents' birthplace and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

1871 is too early for civil records. Church records will be your most likely resource. Unfortunately, the 1870 census failed to identify smaller subdivision within the rather large town of Oyster Bay, but you can find a good series of 1873 maps at this location.
http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Map/Maps.Main.html

Another suggestion: while Oyster Bay was part of Queens County in 1870, it's now in Nassau County. You might find someone more knowledgeable about extant church records on the Nassau County message board.

NY 1806, had a store in Newark NJ (listed in 1840 City Directory); his clerk was Zebulon Dickinson. Charles moved to Mobile Al where he opened a store, and Zebulon was also listed in the Mobile Directory.

We haven't found any of Charles' ancestry, though we know a lot about his wife, Maria Mundy.

I'll be glad to share what I have.

Bob, thanks for the reply. I don't know how old Antonio was at death. He was born 21 Aug 1869 in Italy and was living in Accadia at the time he immigrated to NYC in 1899. Most of his children were born in West Virginia except his oldest who was born in Italy. But Antonio mysteriously disappeared sometime between 1910-1920 leaving his wife Anna and children in Seattle. His wife was living with another man in Seattle by the time of the 1920 census but the wife and children were always very careful about how they described Antonio's disappearence, as if to say he did not die but rather left the family. They all died without revealing the true story. The current generation is trying to solve the mystery. I am working on the theory that he returned to the NYC area where his brother Luigi (Louis) and family lived. I found several Antonio (or Anthony) Lanzas who died in NYC and based on their age at death they could be the right person. I am hoping to get some more difinitive info before ordering death certificates. I was hoping that some descendants of Frank and Dominick Miranda might have some useful information. They might also be interested to learn that they have many relatives in the Seattle area.

Thanks! I appreciate that large cemeteries do have many requests, and will try to be patient while also being persistent. Take care. Jeannie

Keep bugging them. My great-grandfather is buried in Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit. I made many phone calls, sent several emails, even wrote a letter. They finally "took the time" to look up his info for me. I think they did it because they tired of hearing from me.

Good luck,
Susan

Thank you. I did do that! My experience has been at many cemeteries that e-mail is not checked very frequently. Let us hope that here it may be different.

Jeannie

St. Michael's Cemetery [Queens] query

We have a Swedish relative buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in Astoria, Augusta Charlotta Bjorkander, d. March 20, 1880, but we don't know if she has a headstone there [for a picture]. We speculate that her brother, Claes Vilhelm ["John William"] Bjorkander [Burkander] and her brother-in-law, William Parsons, may be buried besider her, but we don't have their death dates, as those dates don't appear to be in the NYC Death Index, so we think they may have died before 1891. Does anyone know if the cemetery's records are filed by NAME or by DATE? If by date, there is probably little sense in sending a research request for those whose death dates we don't know. Have spent a good amount already in this search, and am just checking to see if there's an obvious resource we're overlooking. [Have seen the St. Michael's web site itself, did call, got no way to leave message.]

Thanks so much! Jeannie Rollberg
