If anyone is planning to go the Calvary, I would very much like information on a headstone for Alex Sherrin(Sheerin).Burial 6 Aug. 1917)
Section 41, Range 332, Lot J - Plot #1. Cemetery office gave me this information and was told there are two other persons buried in this plot, and, unfortunately, I cannot afford the $75 to find out who they are. Can someone help!!! It would be gratefully appreciated!!! A picture would be wonderful - but will settle for info only.

Heather
WHAT You need to do is use the ssdi index and narrow down date of death to atleast month and year.
Also you could use telephone directories to see when she stops appearing.
You could try cemeteries where other family members are buried.
you could try other funeral homes that the family has used in the past.

goodluck
kristina
www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com/newyorkrecords.html
1941 envelope sent by S MUNCRON(?) to Geestacht, Germany from Woodside, Queens

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope that was sent by S MUNCRON(?) to Geestacht, Germany from Woodside, Queens in 1941. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on MUNCRON, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find an S MUNCRON in a census or similar source and wondered if someone more familiar with Queens can find him/her or correctly decipher the spelling of the name. I believe that Geestacht may be his/her or his/her parents' birthplace and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

1871 is too early for civil records. Church records will be your most likely resource. Unfortunately, the 1870 census failed to identify smaller subdivision within the rather large town of Oyster Bay, but you can find a good series of 1873 maps at this location.
http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Map/Maps.Main.html

Another suggestion: while Oyster Bay was part of Queens County in 1870, it's now in Nassau County. You might find someone more knowledgeable about extant church records on the Nassau County message board.

NY 1806, had a store in Newark NJ (listed in 1840 City Directory); his clerk was Zebulon Dickinson. Charles moved to Mobile Al where he opened a store, and Zebulon was also listed in the Mobile Directory.

We haven't found any of Charles' ancestry, though we know a lot about his wife, Maria Mundy.

I'll be glad to share what I have.

Bob, thanks for the reply. I don't know how old Antonio was at death. He was born 21 Aug 1869 in Italy and was living in Accadia at the time he immigrated to NYC in 1899. Most of his children were born in West Virginia except his oldest who was born in Italy. But Antonio mysteriously disappeared sometime between 1910-1920 leaving his wife Anna and children in Seattle. His wife was living with another man in Seattle by the time of the 1920 census but the wife and children were always very careful about how they described Antonio's disappearence, as if to say he did not die but rather left the family. They all died without revealing the true story. The current generation is trying to solve the mystery. I am working on the theory that he returned to the NYC area where his brother Luigi (Louis) and family lived. I found several Antonio (or Anthony) Lanzas who died in NYC and based on their age at death they could be the right person. I am hoping to get some more difinitive info before ordering death certificates. I was hoping that some descendants of Frank and Dominick Miranda might have some useful information. They might also be interested to learn that they have many relatives in the Seattle area.

They immigrated to NYC in the 1890's and married sisters Isabella and Maria Teresa Lanza. Frank and Dominick Miranda were barbers in Queens and their families lived in the same house at 239 Pacific St. in Jamaica at the 1920 US Census. My son-in-law is descended from Antonio Lanza an uncle of Isabella and Maria Teresa and brother of their father Luigi (Nicholas?) Lanza. I am trying to locate any information about the death of Antonio Lanza. I would appreciate help from anyone familiar with these families.
Has anyone ever written a comprehensive history about Kings Park or Creedmoor State Hospitals? If so, what are the titles and where can I find/buy a copy? What were the conditions in these hospitals, especially 1910-1940? How were the patients treated? Were female patients treated differently? If so, how?

I'm researching my Great-grandmother, Sophia (nee Wolfert), and her daughter, Emma. Both were sent to mental institutions by Sophia's husband, Charles Beihl. He sent Sophia to Creedmoor in 1893 where she died in 1937, and Emma to Kings Park in about 1916 where she died in 1918. My grandmother said that Charles sent Emma to Kings Park because she was dating a man he didn't approve of. I don't know why he sent Sophia to Creedmoor.

I would appreciate any information anyone has.

Swenson / Kenary - Glen Cove

I've hit a brick wall with my great-great grandfather, Augustus/Gus Swenson/Swinson/Swenson.

My great-grandmother, Anna Rose Swenson was born September 1896. Her mother Ann/Annie (Kenary) Swenson died shortly thereafter in childbirth. Anna Rose is listed on the 1900 census with her grandparents. 1900 census says her father was German, but others say Swedish!

Records are hard to come by for Nassau/Queens, NY where they lived at this point and there is no 1890 census so I cannot even see if they were married at this point.

Augustus and Annie had another daughter "Renie" who died as a child. I do not know if this was before or after Annie's death.

Anna Rose was raised by her grandparents, James and Mary Kenary in Glen Cove, NY. It was part of Queens when she was born.

Anna Rose married William Webb in the early 1920s.

I'm trying to find out obviously the DOB/DOM/DOD for Augustus Swenson and if there were any other children.

I am looking to find an obituary for my great aunt, Frances Gilliard Schuchardt she is buried at St. John Cemetery, Metropolitan Ave. According to the burial information she was buried on either April 2, 1959 or July 2, 1959 (the # is unclear in the date). I know she died in Newark, NJ; but since the family lived in Richmond Hill, Queens I was hoping that an obituary would be in a NY newspaper.

I have a Swenson family in Brooklyn but to my knowledge there were no members named Augustus. Remember to use lots of creative spellings for Swenson when you search. The name was originally Svenson upon arrival but Americanized to Swenson. I have found them Schwenson, Schwendson,
Swensson, etc. Mine were definitely Swedish and after the death of his wife in 1899, he went home for a long visit leaving their two American born sons in Brooklyn. He did come back and married a Swedish woman. The first was German. His original date of emigration was about 1870. The boys were born in Brooklyn 1876 & 1878.

Good luck in your search.

St. Michael's Cemetery [Queens] query

We have a Swedish relative buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in Astoria, Augusta Charlotta Bjorkander, d. March 20, 1880, but we don't know if she has a headstone there [for a picture]. We speculate that her brother, Claes Vilhelm ["John William"] Bjorkander [Burkander] and her brother-in-law, William Parsons, may be buried besider her, but we don't have their death dates, as those dates don't appear to be in the NYC Death Index, so we think they may have died before 1891. Does anyone know if the cemetery's records are filed by NAME or by DATE? If by date, there is probably little sense in sending a research request for those whose death dates we don't know. Have spent a good amount already in this search, and am just checking to see if there's an obvious resource we're overlooking. [Have seen the St. Michael's web site itself, did call, got no way to leave message.]

Thanks so much! Jeannie Rollberg

9-23-2009 (Wednesday)

I’m looking for an obituary notice for a Mr. KARL E. OLAFSON, who died May 1985 at Woodside, NY 11377(Queens County). He was born Oct 11, 1909 in Odeshog, Sweden and immigrated to the US in 1926. I want to find out if he was survived by a wife and/or children and where he is buried.

(1) NEWSPAPER. Can someone tell me what the name of the main local newspaper is in that area where an obit might be found? If an obit was found I would like to get a printed copy of it, or you could send me the text by e-mail.

(2) CITY DIRECTORIES. Is there a local library or other place available where city directories or cross reference directories (sometimes called Polk’s Directories or Cole’s Directories) for the years 1980-1985 might be found? I’m trying to see if his street address and his wife’s name might be listed.

(3) CEMETERY RECORDS. I’m also trying to find a more specific date of death for Mr. Olafson and where he is buried.

Thanks for any assistance or suggestions offered.
KEITH NORTHINGTON (Researcher)
P.
I can help a little. Henry Idhe was my GGfather. His daughter Dorothy Idhe always lived in Queens. She was my Grandmother. She married James Curran. Henry was married to Dora Eschen. They also had a son named Henry. So the Henry you are seeing with Mary is the son. They too were born in Queens. The elder Henry I was told was a Seacaptain who originated from Texas. They also had a son named William who died in the East River at the age of 13. After that I don't know what happenend to the Elder Henry but I do know Dora Eschen remarried.

My problem is the story told to me abou my GGfather was he was a seacaptain from Galveston Texas. He and his wife Dora had several children. William their son drowned in 1895(got hooked on the dock in the east river and no one looked right there) Anyway after that I can't find any record of Henry. I see his son Henry but not him. I know the wife remarried but I am stuck.

This store was located at 30 09 34th street Astoria, Queens,NY. My relatives owned this store from around the late 1920's to the early 1950's. Does any one remember this
store? Also, I would like to know if any one could help me
find out how I can obtain records for this building. There
are 2 apts above the store that my family owned also.
I contacted the records dept in Queens and they told me I
had to go in person to find any records. Is there any one
who may be able to help me? I would really appreciate it.
Thank-you

Keep bugging them. My great-grandfather is buried in Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit. I made many phone calls, sent several emails, even wrote a letter. They finally "took the time" to look up his info for me. I think they did it because they tired of hearing from me.

Good luck,
Susan

Is there anyone who would look up and copy an obituary for Joseph Vondracek who died at age 40 on July 24, 1940. According to the NYC death index he lived in Queens. I know nothing more than that. His family all lived in upstate NY. According to one relative he was either killed accidentally or may have been murdered. Thank you for any assistance.
Re: Long Island City Death Records - 1871/1884????? Advice Needed

I found the death record on Italiangen.com for Mary A. Meyers on Dec. 5, 1894. She died in Newtown, Queens which is located in the Long Island City area. I did not find Jacob. His record was probably not recorded as that was 1871 & county records were not good. I have found 2 relatives in these death registers and there is not alot of info. Only the name, age, date of death, address, marital status, cause of death & cemetery where buried. If you send for the death record all you will get is a photocopy of a page of the death register along with all the other people on the same page who died around the same time. That is what I received. There is no actual death certificate. You may get more info from the cemetery. My Wifes has family in Mt. Olivet.
Bill
