Re: Nancy Tapscott, blind/ and family

I believe I can shed more light on the Tapscott/Baynes connection. In searching records of my ancestor George Lea(Lee) and his mother, Mary Lea(Lee) of Haywood I found court transcriptions of a competency hearing of Nancy Tapscott, who was 66 and blind. Miss Tapscotts brothers had died and from what I could gather one of her nephews was trying to take her "property", 8 slaves. Dr George Lee testified she was not competent, however Mary Lee (his mother) testified she was. Both Lees verify having lived many years as a neighbor of Miss Tapscott in Caswell Co, NC before becoming neighbors again in Haywood, TN. Mary Lee verifies that the Mr Baynes whom Miss Tapscott lives with and had chosen to handle her business was her (Mary Lee's) son-in-law, therefore, his wife, Sarah, must be her daughter.
I have the document and my transcription linked to Mary and George in my tree. The file is under "George Lee" in Haywood Cty rather than Nancy Tapscott.
Previously I did not know Mary Lea's spouses name and am interesting in any source documents indicating she was the Mary "Polly" Swift who married John Lea. Some notes indicate this Mary died and was buried in Caswell Co, NC but my Mary Lea is buried in Concord Cemetery, Gates, TN along with her sons Thomas Fletcher and Dr. George Washington Lee. Considering the Tapscott connection I feel certain this is the same Mary.
Rose Dawkins

yes yes yes....This maybe the John Wooding, brother of Robert I been looking for. There are so many Robert, John Wm, Nathaniel Henry through our history. Do you have anything else on this individual and his children, one of which may have been named after John's brother Robert. He may have also a wife or companion Sukey HILL.

While in VA, John helped with land surveys and documented in Library of VA. Then he disappeared except for in his brother's will.

Checking that area now for more information...This may have been the breakthrough I been looking.

YANCEY family and UNDERWOOD family connection?

I am trying to connect to a researcher who knows BARTLETT YANCEY of CASWELL who paid a bond to act as administrator of Abraham UNDERWOOD estate in 1820. He was not alone. There were two others who signed on as administrators too - WILLIAM BETHELL and ROMULUS SANDERS.

Was this CONGRESSMAN/STATE SENATOR YANCEY?

Why would he pay a bond to act as administrator for Abraham Underwood's estate?

Anyone know the relationship between WILLIAM BETHELL, ROMULUS SANDERS, BARTLETT YANCEY, and ABRAHAM UNDERWOOD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

JONATHAN BROOKS UNDERWOOD 1839 -1912

I am trying to connect with JONATHAN BROOKS UNDERWOOD family. We are BARTLETT YANCEY UNDERWOOD family - believe we are kin.

Jonathan Brooks married Nancy Brincefield July 16, 1860 in Caswell and raised his family there. His parents George and Nancy Underwood and siblings, Bartlett Yancey Underwood, Thomas Jefferson Underwood, and Margaret Underwood Gorrell had moved to Caswell in the late 1840s or early 1850. (Margaret had wed Ralph Washington Gorrell in 1849 in Guilford County).

Our Bart married Emma Medlin and moved to WAKE.

Jonathan and his wife Nancy stayed in Caswell and had four children:

Frances (a girl) 1861
William Thomas 1863-1956 married Minnie McCollum
Laura Lee 1866-1922 married James H Rice
Andrew Jefferson "Bud" Underwood 1869-1939 wed Cornelia Catherine Underwood, dau of Stephen and Selina Underwood

When Nancy died, Jonathan married Dinah Chatham. They married in Stony Creek Caswell Co on May 15, 1873.

Jonathan and Dinah had two children:

Calvin Underwood 1874
John Wessley Underwood 1876-1950 m. Murkedeese Apple on Nov 17, 1912 in Guilford County.

Jonathan Brooks Underwood was laid to rest in Camp Springs.

I am trying to determine who was Abel Underwood's parents. Also trying to find family who may have some record or recollection to help me get Bart's grave marked.

Jonathan Brooks, I believe, preferred his middle name, and went by Brooks.

Has anyone come across any land or obit/cemetery records for this "CASWELL" family? George, Nancy and their kids are noted in the 1850 census as born in "GUILFORD" and living in CASWELL. Anyone know exactly WHERE in CASWELL they were living?

I have found court documents about Mary Alice and Mattie Barksdale Travis-Pinnix's custody dispute between WD Coleman and Martha S.
Everyone keeps confusing this man with the James Long that belonged to Ambrose Long of Person County. There are no marriage records for the James Long of Person County so they automatically assume the Caswell County James Long is him. IT IS NOT. Anyway... I would be interested in contacting anyone that is researching the Caswell County James Long. Priscilla was a second marriage for him based on the childrens ages. Curious to know if anyone found who his parents were. PLEASE CONTACT ME.. or post on here. THANK YOU

Hello, Shakhan,
I am glad to hear from you. I'm happy to report that, as far as I can tell, you do descend from the line of Kings from Caswell County, North Carolina that I have been researching.
I'll list a brief summary here, and I'll write to the email address that you have listed with additional details and relevant documents.

I am presuming you are talking about the Ernest King born 18 Feb 1912 in McDowell County, West VA, and died 31 Jan 1996 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.
Ernest King married Mary Anderson on 31 Jan 1931 at Eckman, McDowell, West VA.
Ernest King was the son of James King and Tora Turner.

James King, born around 1875 in Caswell County, NC was the son of Albert and Martha King. And I believe that Albert King, born about 1829 in Caswell County, NC was the son of Rogers and Matilda King, former slaves of Robert J. King, Jr. (d. 1857) in Caswell County, North Carolina.

Tora Turner, born about 1871 in Caswell County, North Carolina, was the daughter of Jordan and Matilda Turner. Tora's first marriage was to Preston Smith on 25 Oct 1890 in Locust Hill, Caswell, North Carolina. She had several children by him. Tara married James King on 26 Dec, 1910 in Welch, McDowell, North Carolina.

Look for an email from me either later tonight or tomorrow.

MR
My name is Shakhan King. My great grandparents migrated to McDowell, WV. There names, Ernest & Mary King. They settled in Columbus, Ohio in the 50's. I believe Ernest parents were Abner and Tora King, from Caswell County. My grandfather recently told me we are connected to Totten Family from Caswell County.
I'm researching The King Family in Caswell/Yanceyville, NC area.
Re: The Identity of The First Wife Of Alexander M., Long

Your grandfather, William Rufus Montgomery, was he a brother to Mary Ann Montgomery, who was married to Alexander Moore Long? Mary Ann Montgomerys parents were James Montgomery and Rebecca Davis. From your post I cant quite tell who he is. I do have a William Montgomery listed as a brother to Mary. I dont know his middle name. I have his wife as Sarah Mattock. Perhaps you can help me place your William R. Montgomery in the right place. The others you mentioned I do not know who they are.

If your reply to my query was in regards to who Alexander M. Longs first wife was, her names was Tabitha Vaughan. They had one child, my gr gr grandfather, Archibald M. Long, the oldest child of Alexander M. Long.

Alexander M(oore) Long and Mary Ann Montgomery had 9 children. Their 8th child, a son, was named Rufus C. Long, so there apparently was a namesake of Rufus somewhere in the family.

Now as for a Mary Polly Stephens or Stevens... I have a Mary Polly Bowman Stephens, the wife of Samuel Jasper Weir. They were the parents of Letitis Jane Weir, the wife of Archibald M. Long. As I stated, Archibald and and his wife, Letitia were my gr gr grandparents.

One of Letitia Jane Weirs sisters, Maragaret Serena Weir, married Jefferson Davis Montgomery.

If you could clarify a little more I might be better able to pinpoint where your Montgomerys are in my tree. If any of what I have listed here sounds familiar let me know. In the meantime after I post this hear I will keep looking in my files for your people. Hopefully we can connect. Thanks

Ned had one daughter name Isabella/Belle Burton b. abt 1858 who was my great great grndma whom I've heard was pretty well know around Leasburg or Yanceyville as a domestic servant. I traced her down to me, but lost tract of her siblings after there 1880 census that consisted of:
Ned Burton b. abt 1830ish,
Fanny/Fannie Williams Burton b. abt 1830ish as wife,

Children:
Isabella/Belle,
Missouri,
David,
Mary F,
William A,
Edward,
George,
Barbra...

Belle's children I found as Chas Hemphill (lost track of him) after the 1900 census, then Albert, Fannie (as known as a servant around Leasburg), Eliza, & then there was a Elaura who was listed as Ned's grndaughter in 1900, and as Grndma Belle's niece in 1910 - spelled as Birton's I believe.

ANY INFO ON THIS FAMILY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
Hi. My great-grandmother is from Caswell County & her name is Elizabeth Hester. She was a full blood Native American, most likely belonging to the Choctaw Tribe. She married my great-grandfather Ben Poteat originally from Louisiana. I am researching any information I can collect about my roots.

I am so glad I came across this information. My RUSSELL ancestors were living in Cherokee Co., AL in 1850 with them is a James Page enumerated with them. His age makes him born prior to the marriage of the father (head of household) My family tree is posted on ancestry.com, I've disputed what my genealogy cousins assumed to be that James Page was a prior marriage child of the wife of the HH. I've never believed that, and now this site and these comments have shown me that I'm on the right track. Thank you! Feel free to contact me if you have any information to further contribute.

Hello Janie,

I have traced a number of my Haralsons from Virginia and Caswell, NC. There are several spelling variations including Harrelson, Harralson but I never found a Harrison connected to my lines. If you have other names from Caswell maybe I can connect.

Tommy
