I have come across some family papers that list my g-g-grandfather, William R. Carter of Amelia County, Virginia (1809 - 1886), as "Jr." or "Junior." I know for a fact that William's father was John Carter (1775 - 1852). John Carter moved to Amelia County between 1810 and 1820 according to the Censuses of the time; however, he was doing business in Amelia as early as 1803. He is listed on one document as "John Carter of the County of Cumberland." However, he is neither listed in Amelia or Cumberland on the 1810 Census. There does appear a John Carter on the 1810 Census in Prince Edward County who fits John's description very well.

Since William R. Carter is listed as "William R. Carter JR.," and his father was NOT named William, this leads me to believe that perhaps John's father, William R.'s grandfather, was named William. There IS a William Carter Sr. listed on the 1810 Census in Prince Edward County who is married in a house without children and both he and his wife are over the age of 45. This William Carter Sr. has a son, William Carter Jr. who also lives in Prince Edward County with his wife, and one son and three daughters (all under the age of 10). In 1796, both William Sr. and Jr. can be found as jurors in Prince Edward County courtrooms. There is also a Wm. Carter listed as the head of "8 white souls" in 1785.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS WILLIAM Carter OF Prince Edward County???? Looking for birth date, death date, marriage date, spouse, parents, children - ANYTHING.

Any information appreciated.

Peyton Carter

Junior and Jr. before the 1900's did not necessarily mean "son of" more often it meant "the second" and was used to tell two persons of the same name apart often they were grandchildren or nephews, but I have seen such references that were cousins both named after the grandfather, the elder grandson was Sr. and the grandson several years youger was Jr. It was even applied to females.

I had thought as much. Thank you for confirming this for me. My suspicions tell me that William Sr. might be the son of John Carter (1725 - 1773) and Mary Fleming (1730 - 1794) of Cumberland County. I am still hoping to gain some information to confirm this.

My Willaim Carter had a wife named Mary. However he was born probably between 1760-1780. He had a daughter Elizabeth Carter who married George Toombs in 1796.
Elizabeth Carter was my 4th great grandparent.

Hi. Peyton Bradshaw was my GGgfather.

Lucy Wooten married William Carter, Jr. in Prince Edward County, VA (marriage bond dated Dec 22, 1803).

William Carter, Sr. died in 1812, leaving property to his son, William Carter, Jr. (Prince Edward Will Book, 4, p. 321).

Peyton Bradshaw married Mary Jane Carter, d/o William Carter of Prince Edward County, VA. (Marriage bond dated Dec 12, 1831).

Mary Jane & Peyton and Lucy W. Carter, etc in selling property of William Carter on Briary Creek (Prince Edward Deed Book, 24, p.11)

Since Mary Jane was of age when she got married (according to her marriage bond), Lucy and William Carter, Jr were almost certainly Mary Jane's parents (although we don't have a primary source to prove it, it appears so from the timeline of events).

Do you have any further info on any of these people/families? We hope this helps your search.

Jim
