How big is it and how many names are there. Is it online? What is the name of the cemetery? Pat

Pat, thanks for this message. I have been in VA for this past week and only returned today.I have been spending a great deal of time in Franklin County VA trying to find more about Phileman and when and where he was born. I saw his home while I was there and took a picture of it (not digital). He was quite a wealthy land owner, having more than 3000 acres of beautiful land.
I have reservations about the Samuel that was born in 1727 being Philemon's father. Of course, that is another story. In your research of this family, have you ever come across Mordecai and Ransom Sutherland? Both of these men were born in VA. Mordecai named his first born Samuel. Ransom named his first born Philip. If the naming pattern is correct, these two may be cousins and not brothers.
I really appreciate your message and perhaps we will be able to piece this family together.
I don't know where you live, but I have digital phone service and no long distance charges. I am in North Carolina and would really like to speak with you. If you are agreeable, please send me your phone number and I'll make the call.
Joanne

They were in the Butterwood Church churchyard/cemetery on Rt 40 in western Dinwiddie County, just outside the N E corner of Ft Pickett. I don't know when I'm going back, but if I have time when I go, I may take more photos of headstones. Are you still looking?

I should have looked at my own documented records before I posted.
But in any case Frances Penick married Philemon Southerland who is son of Samuel and Diana. She is the dau of Judith Walker and William Penick 1737-1816(son of William Penick/Pennock and Judith Paite).I have all the other info if anyone wants it.
However, Philemon was born in Goochland Co VA 1755 and died in Henry Co 1811.He was in Rev War as a Pvt under Capt Morgan.John Morgan married Philemon 's wifes sister Tabitha Penick.
Since Philemon was born in Goochland Co circa 1755 I would suggest that is where to look for marriage of Samuel and his wife Diana. The name is also spelled Sutherland .

Goochland is a burned Co . It was formed from Henrico Co 1728 and Samuel was born in abt 1727 in Henrico in the portion that became Goochland.
Where they lived in Goochland became Cumberland in 1749 and then from Cumberland was formed Powhattan in 1777. This was where the French Huguenots were living when they came 1704 in what became Goochland. It is also where most of the families lived that I listed earlier and who had removed to Pr Ed Co ... The burned records in Goochland make it difficult to search. If Samuel married after 1749 then it could be in Cumberland.
In any case it lists Samuels parents as George Sutherland Jr and Judith Sanders of Henrico. (Judith Sanders of Henrico must have had a first husband Sanders as her parents are listed as Wm and Judith DePriest) His parents were George Southerland Sr and Elizabeth Norment.

Pat

I am looking for the Southerland who married Francis Penick . She was sister of Judith Penick Sr .I have wondered if Samuel was Francis husband and a possible 2nd marriage for him. Since her Francis sister Judith is right age. Judith Penick's daus in her will in PE married Tuggle,Boatwright,Bagley,Morton,Baldwin,Sanders,Arnold all of PE and of course her dau Judith Jr married Abraham McGehee . Or possibly one of Samuels sons (2 were in Rev War from PE) married Francis Penick. Pat

Since Prince Edward was established in 1754 (from Amelia), you are correct. This record would be located in Amelia County.
Samuel Southerland was member of the first grand jury in Prince Edward and served in the May Court, 1754. He was a member of a team that conducted the processioning of land in 1760. He was also selected to "view" a new road in the Sandy Ford area in April 1767.
The above information is contained in the "History of Prince Edward County, Virginia" by Herbert Clarence radshaw.

Seeking land deed or any other information on the family of Casey Askew (sometimes spelled Asque, Ascue), which we know was in Prince Edward County at the end of the Revolution. Casey’s family of eleven members is in 1783 and 1785 Prince Edward Census/Tax Lists. By 1788, the family had removed to Wilkes Co., GA, presumably to lands that Casey was awarded for his Revolutionary War service in the 4th VA Regulars (Capt. Morton’s Co.).

Dear Cassandra, How are you!
My grandmother, Mary Branch Spencer, born 1873, was born in Appomattox Co. Va. My mother, Alma Tinsley Dodson Porter, now deceased, told me that her grandfather, was a Branch family member. They owned a plantation. Obviously, at that time that family, like others families, they owned slaves. Reportedly, "Mr. Branch, son of the plantation owner, fathered my grandmother. There were two children of this relationship. She had a brother who left the area. No one really knows where he went. An aunt said he left for Denver Co. And established another identity.

My grandmother was married at 16 to Mr. Stanhope Flournoy Dodson, Prince Edward Co. Educated at Hampton Institute in Hampton. His original plantation name was not Dodson, but Womack.

Most records were destroyed by fire in Appomatox County. I to find out, attempted years ago. No luck. Brick wall.

Grandparents had 12 children who left for the north for education and jobs during the 1920s. Most went to Washington, DC and NY and NJ.

I have always been curious about all this history of yesteryear.

How are you related to Mr. Branch?
Hi,
I believe this man to be my Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather through his daughter Martha Sarah LeNieve b.1847-d.1923[NO matter how the Census Takers spelled it according to my Grandfather]-(she prefered Sarah Martha and I have been told that is how her tombstone reads: Sarah Martha Nunnally).
Martha was married to Samuel J. Nunnally b.1835(NOT 1838-there was at least one other Sam in Prince Edward) and he died sometime between 1910 & 1920. I believe they are buried near Farmville, Va.
Could you help me track down Sam's parents...I believe his father may have been a "Creed T. Nunnally" from guessing Sam's and his possible sibblings ages before the 1850 Census. As of the 1850 Census 15 year old Sam does not live with his parents. Sam sibbling's may have been: William D. b.1824; Henry T. b.1826; Louise(Louisa)J. b.1829; Mary W. b.1833 and Emily NUNNALLY b.1838....I have searched/exhausted every lead-if you can help I would very much appreciate it.

Hi this is a long shot, but I saw in the 1920 census their was a Royster Morton next to my family, and his daughter was listed as Emma Edwards with her children. Kimball Ward, Roanoke, VA. my family from where i am able to search from would be our grandma Virgie White abt. 1914, and she had 16children, so if you can tell me what towns your family were in that would help me see if we are part of your tree in surnames: I see your surnames around my family I just don't know our great grandmother madian name:
Perhaps someone can shed some light on these folks. From the Prince Edward County, Virginia Wills, 1754-1765. This will appears to have been proven either in 1760 or 1766. It is hard to tell. I am guessing at least some of the children moved to Bedford/Campbell county after the death of their father. And who might the John “Erwin” be? Be aware of variant spellings. Any clues out there? Edwin

Page 43. Will.
I am related to Richard Blanton and Jane Rice of Prince Edward Co., VA. From research I did back in the 1980's, I was able to trace the above family to Stewart Co., TN. Richard Blanton (b. abt 1775) died in June of 1847 - Stewart Co., TN. His wife did not remarry and is found in the 1860 Census of Standing Rock, Stewart Co., TN. There is a will for Richard Blanton (written in 1844), probated 1847.
Jane, his wife, is one of the executors of the will. Only two children are listed in the will... his son Henry and his daughter Lucy (Blanton) Bufford. Do you have any records of which indicate you have the right Richard Blanton? You mail email me directly: j.whitaker3@verizon.net
Jim Whitaker

HERBERT - 1870 Buffalo Twp

I'd appreciate any input or insight on this subject.....
My great-grandfather, Henry Herbert, his father Charles Herbert sr. and brother Charles jr., emigrated to the US from England in August, 1869 through NY. Up to now, I've never been able to find them on the 1870 census. However, I now find a family living in Buffalo twp, with the right ages, all b. in England, as a farmer, but listed as being Black. I wonder if this might have been a mistake by the census taker, as all three were white.
I wonder if someone familiar with the area could answer some questions - my great, great grandfather, Charles sr. had been involved in horse breeding and horse racing prior to his leaving Great Britain. Was this area involved in horse farming or horse racing? Are there any land records that are available online that might reflect a lease or sale of land in late 1869 or 1870?
My great grandfather Henry Herbert, and his brother were working on the Rancocas horse/stud farm owned by Pierre Lorillard in the 1880 census of New Jersey. Did Lorillard have any tobacco farms in the area? I'm trying to find some connection or reason why they settled in PE Co. VA initially, and why and when they left.
Any opinions or help would be greatfully appreciated!
Thanks,
Randi
