Memorial services for Bernice A. Faber were held Monday, February 25, 2001 at the Christian Reformed Church, Oak Harbor with Pastor Harold Veldman officiating. Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m. at Fircrest Cemetery, Oak Harbor.
Bernice Ann Faber, age 78, died February 23, 2001 at Skagit Valley Hospital, Mount Vernon, following a brief illness. She was born in Oak Harbor, Washington April 3, 1922 to Lambert and Sadie (Holtgeerts) Streutker.
Mrs. Faber was a lifetime resident of Oak Harbor. She graduated from Oak Harbor High School with the Class of 1940. Following graduation, she worked for a time for the U.S. Post Office in Oak Harbor. On April 18, 1943, she married Irvin Faber. She quit the Post Office and began raising a family.
As the Faber children became older, ernice returned to work, first cleaning private homes and the Oak Harbor Freight Lines building and then as a florist for Antone's Flowers, both in Oak Harbor.
The Fabers loved to garden and raise flowers, especially iris and dahlias. They received awards for the beautiful gardens at their home. Mrs. Faber was an avid swimmer, spending time each weekday morning at the John Vanderzicht Pool.
Mrs. Faber was a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Oak Harbor and the Golden Hour Circle at church. She was a long time member of the Whidbey General Hospital Guild, as well as hospital volunteer, was a guild volunteer at Cascade Home in Mount Vernon and had been a member of the Mother's Club at the Oak Harbor Christian School.
Mrs. Faber is survived by four children and their spouses: Leonard and Rena Faber of Salem, Oregon, Clifford and Marjean Faber of Marysville, Washington, Sheryl Faber of Mount Vernon, Washington and fiancé Raymond Fakkema of Oak Harbor, Ruth and Hank Hilberdink of Oak Harbor; and by one brother; Jerald Streutker of Monroe, Washington; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband Irvin in 1991 and by two sisters Jane and Dorothy Streutker.
