I am not a descendant of the Berry line. Rather, one Berry married into my family. I usually do a bit of research on in-laws and traced the Berry family into Wisconsin.

Regarding Daniel's place of birth... If you examine the census records for Daniel's 3 sons you will see that they consistently list their birthplace and the birthplaces of both parents as New York.

Regarding Nicholas's death certificate, keep in mind that information on a Death Certificate is only as good as the knowledge and memory of the informant... in this case, Nicholas's wife. (I have seen incorrect information on Death Certificates before.) One example, this cert lists his mother's name as "Anna" which does not match the name "Mary" which appears on census records with the 3 sons. (But perhaps Mary was a stepmother - certainly possible.) So, the question is...how likely is it that Nicholas's widow remembered (or knew) the correct information.

But these census records for Dan's sons all list NY as the birthplace:

Thomas - 1880,
Nicholas 1880, 1900 and 1910,
and Charles 1880 and 1900.

In this case, it seems much more likely that the 3 men themselves would know and correctly remember their parents' birthplaces.

My money is on NY as Daniel's birthplace.

Good luck

Who is the wife of Peter Altmeyer?

He lived from 1847 to 1915 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Peter seems simple enough to know about. But his wife is an anomaly.

She lived from 1856 to 1932. Also in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

I've come across many names for this woman. They are as follows: 1. Catherine Filomena Altmeyer, 2. Sarah Caroline Pomroy, 3. Caroline Unknown, 4. Caroline Klotz, 5. (Mary) Caroline Klotz. Lots of names, there. I simply cannot figure out which one is her.

Does anyone know ANYTHING about her?

Johann Nicholas Truttschel is my great-great grandfather. I have a certified copy of his Registration of Death (Sheboygan County, Wisconsin) that shows he was born in Eligle___ Germany. The last letters are unintelligible. I believe that should be Eisleben, Germany. His date of birth is shown as April 16, 1802 and the date of his death is September 21, 1887. The names of his mother and father are not given.

Thank you for all the information you found about the Orth family from Sheboygan, WI. I greatly appreciate it. The most important pieces of information that you provided was Cresentia's maiden name, Sonentag. Even her death record from the Wisconsin Genealogy Society did not list it. Also, the married names of the female Orth children and grandchildren listed in the obits. I can now expand the Orth branch of my family tree, which was my mother's maiden name.

Best wishes to you,
Karen Springsteen
San Francisco Bay Area

Thank you for responding to my message. However, Johann and John are not the same individual. My great-grandfather, John, moved to Brainerd, MN and married Jennie Gelow. They had four children, the eldest was my grandfather, John. In 1902, the family moved to Visalia, CA, where John and Jennie are buried. There might be a connection between Johann and Nicholas. It seems to me that early immigrants would choose to live where there are other family members live. Maybe that is why both Johann and Nicholas settled in Wisconsin counties.

Good luck in your search,
Karen Springsteen
San Francisco Bay Area

One of my family lines has Orth. But it is one of those lines out of Sheboygan Co., that migrated to Clark County, Wisconsin and then some of the Clark County Orth's migrated to Oregon and Washington.

Those that are head of the Clark County group are Johann Orth Sr. (1844-1921) and his wife Regina J. (Eisert) (1859-1931). Could be this Johann could also be one in the same as your John, son of Nicholas and Crecentia. My information does not go back beyond Johann but I know they came from Southeastern Manitowoc County. And, in that area, families also spilled into Sheboygan County.

If you need more of the Orth's in Clark County, go to this site: http://wvls.lib.wi.us/ClarkCounty/

Most are interred at St. Mary's in town Colby.

Regards, have a blessed Easter
Robert Lipprandt
(South Florida)

Looking for information about my great-great grandparents, Nicholas and Crecentia Orth, who immigrated from Germany to Sheboygan, WI in the 1840's. They had six children: Peter, Rosa, Nicholas, John, Mary, and Martin (John was my great-grandfather). Nicholas Orth drove a stage coach and owned a grocery store. Crecentia died on 6/6/1900, and Nicholas died on 2/1/1910. Any information about the Orth family would be appreciated.

Today I was able to view the Holy Name church records on microfilm at the Sheboygan FHC. I am not able to read Latin very well but I was able to find the marriage you refer to. As you said they were married Feb 2, 1855. MICHAEL RODDEN, 22, parents: Thomas & Helena, MARIA MURPHY, 18, parents: Jacob & Helena (deceased). Iam attaching an image of the record. I hope this is helpful to your research.

My 3rd gr-grandmother was Mary Murphy from Mitchell, WI and she married Michael Patrick Rodden February 2, 1855 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheboygan. There seem to be several Mary Murphys from Mitchell, WI and I can't seem to find any info beyond my Mary as far as who her parents were or what part of Ireland she was from. I have seen some research with her name as Mary Cooper Murphy, but no official records. The only thing I have is an obituary for Michael Patrick Rodden showing that he "married a Miss Mary Murphy of Mitchell". HELP!

Re: Dommisse Family

1930 US Census in Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin shows 20 yr old Carl living with parents James (51) and Lena (47) both born in Holland arriving this country 1899. 1920 Census is consistent with 1930 but add parents were naturalized in 1910 so you may be able to find that record. 1910 (April 20th) Census shows 1 month old Charles so approx birth date is March 1910. James, the father, was a widow in the 1940 Census. It looks like Carl had two brothers and two sisters. Possible arrival record for Jacobus Dommisse (age 20, laborer) from Nienndorp or Nienndorf, Holland, at Ellis Island on 14 May 1899 on the ship Statendam out of Rotterdamm. Destination shows Sheboygan, Wis. going to join friend C Buleyse (Sp?) in Sheboygan. Looking at the various pages, it's not clear to me if ship arrived the 4th or the 14th so look for both. I don't see Lena on the list of passengers. There are two women named Lina, both from Hungary. I can find no place in the Netherlands with the name of Nienndorp or similar. WW I draft registration card for James gives birth date as 30 Mar 1879, medium height, medium build, gray eyes, brown hair. I see there is a naturalization record for James Dommisse but I don't have a paid Ancestry.com membership so I can't see it.

There is a Carl Dommisse (age 57) living in Sheboygan who registered for WW II draft with birth date 18 Sep 1884 giving birth province as Zeeland, Netherland. I suspect this is James' little brother and your Carl's uncle. So Nienndorp (or whatever) is likely in province of Zeeland.

Find a Grave shows James died 27 Sep 1961 and is buried in Wildwood Cemetery in Sheboygan. Same site shows Lena Roelse Dommisse born 30 Aug 1882, died 8 Apr 1939 and her mother was Catherine Roelse (8 Nov 1851-22 May 1933) also buried in Wildwood Cemetery.

My wife has a Kornelia Dommisse (b. abt 1788 in Oostkapelle, Zeeland, Netherland) in her family tree and also a ton of Roelse from same general area whose descendents emigrated and lived in Sheboygan County. However, I don't see a Catherine Roelse. I'm sure there is at least a distant connection.

From this, I'd say that Carl's mother (and James' wife) Lena Dommisse (nee Roelse) was actually born in Wisconsin. Googling Lena Roelse I found her parents were Adrian Roelse and Katharine Sanders. This record on Ancestry also states she had six children (not five).

I see a marriage record for Jannes Dommisse (probably transcribed incorrectly) and Lena Roelse on 18 Dec 1901 in Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Groom's parents are Jacobus Dommisse and Janna Vandalen. Bride's parents are Adriaan Roelse and Katharina Sanders.

In 1900 US Census for Sheboygan, Lena Roalsa [sic] was enumerated living with parents and sister Fannie. Birthplace shows Wisconsin. Parents Adrian (b. May 1854) and Catharine (b. Nov 1852) in Germany. Birth place for parents is wrong. Idiot enumerator didn't know the difference between Dutch and Deutsch! Father arrived this country 1881. Father's occupation is white washer. Both sisters are varnishers in a chair factory.

I see that there is a place named Nieuwdorp in the province of Zeeland, Netherlands and it's near where the Roelse and others in my wife's Dutch ancesters originated (Westkapelle). Looking back at the manifest for the ship Statendam I can see that Jacobus (which is James in English) Dommisse was from Nieuwdorp!!!! So, you are on your way with both of your Carl Dommisse's parents. Best of luck. You can contact me, Paul 503dash682dash0599 if you have questions.

I am the great great granddaughter of Daniel Heraty and Bridget Flannery Heraty of Mitchell, Sheboygan Co. WI My cousin Kay R an O'Connell descendant posted much info through Sheboygan Historical Society. Kay R. died in 2007. The daughter of Daniel Heraty, Mary Heraty O'Connell is my great grandmother, wife of John O'Connell. I have a lot of info on descendants but not much further back than Daniel except that his father named Peter, was a weaver. After 6 sons died in Ireland, they came on the famine ship Manchester departing from Liverpool, Captain Cook, arriving July 13, of 1847, not 1846 as it is listed in Tom Heraty's Diary which is posted online. Tom, at age 10 or so had his birthday onboard and we think he miscalculated the year when writing the diary years later. Ship records from Quebec newspaper found online show the ship Manchester arrived in Quebec July 13, 1847. Baby Martin died on ship from typhoid epidemic, and Bridget kept him hidden in the folds of her skirt,( didn't want sea burial) as told to me by my mother who heard story from her grandmother Mary Heraty. He is said to be buried on banks of St. Lawrence River. (Grosse Isle???? the Irish memorial graveyard.. we don't know for sure as his name is not listed.)Family with son Tom, and daughters Mary and Catherine settled in Mitchell. John and Mary Heraty O'Connell's daughter Hannah ( one of 11 children) is my grandmother and she married John Gaynor of Mitchell 1892. I have visited Mitchell and St. Michael's cemetery and the site of their homes. Mary G.

I have an obituary of Robert Papendieck b:10/14/1864 and d:7/14/1936 in Appleton. His wife was Emma Strassburger. They are distant relatives of my husband on the Strassburger side.

If this is who you are looking for, message me and I will send it to you.

Emma and Johanna (who were mentioned in other replies) are cousins on the Strassburger side.
Please send a test message to rloss[a]bellsouth.net

Put Bloedel in the subject box. What I am going to do is put you in contact with my 3rd cousin, who's grandmother was a Bloedel, in Sheboygan County (I think I have gotten that right).

Happy Thanksgiving, Bob~~

Thank you so much Marlin. The information you supplied was very helpful. Now I know J.R. Jones' full name. Jones is bad enough to research without a person using only his initials. Now if anyone out there has pictures of this Kohl family, that would be fabulous.
Carol
