I have discovered details of a transportation and release of David Clabburn, a direct ancester. I mnow when and how he reached Tasmania and when he left Tasmania. I want to know what his crime was (14 years hard) and what happened to him afterwards. Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction?

where, how to find convict records? Ann McNally/Ferris

Ann McNally came aboard the 'Surrey' from Ireland 1833. She had 2 children with her. Her sentence was Life.
Can I find the childrens names?
Can I find a transcript of her trial in Co Longford in 1831?
Would her children have been in prison with her for over 12 months?

Ann is listed on the 1837 Convict Muster as Ann Ferris (is this the norm? I have seen others on the muster with their convict name and a comment that they were married to the Master) her Master Joseph Ferris in Sydney.
I cannot find a marriage, bann or permission to marry.
Ann McNallys convict record states she was single so I cannot see that that was a barrier.

Their daughter Eliza's death cert states Eliza was born in Sydney, but cannot find a record. (wondering if she was one that came with Ann)
There is a birth of son James Ferris, Sydney 1835.

Ann and Joseph settled in the Maitland District before 1844, when Joseph died.(another unknown entity...he was free and died as a result of DUI on his dray)
As a 'Lifer' should there be a record of some sort of Pardon, or Ticket of Leave for Ann McNally/Ferris to be allowed to live so far away from Sydney, or was she able just to go because she was married. I can't find any records. If there was no pardon or TOL was Ann 'free' to please herself after her husbands death just 10 years into a life sentence.

Some of my difficulty is surely in the spelling of McNally, which could be Macanelly, Macanally, Mcenally, Mackinally etc which I have tried over and again. (and Feras, Feris, Faris, Feres...)

Can any one tell me where I might find a physical description of Ann McNally?

Young Eliza Ferris married Henry Rose. He was also a 'Lifer' from a Canadian Military Court Martial, arriving aboard the Maitland in 1840.
Where should I look to find where Henry was assigned on his arrival?
He received a TOL in 1847. Does that 1 TOL mean he was 'free' from then on?
Would he have been given permission to run cattle on Govt property in 1843, before his TOL.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated and surely allow me to get some sound sleep.

Thanks, Alison

Convicts Thomas and Ellen Scott from Tipperary

I've also posted this query under a different title as it as various aspects of query.

After viewing some of the convict muster records I am wondering about certain terms used in describing the penal system and the nature of the what, how where and why of the fate of convicts sent to Australia.

A Thomas Scott convicted in 1848 in the CC court (Central Criminal Court) sentenced to 7 years and send to Tasmania on the Rodney in 1849 was listed in pardon records of 1852 having served 3 years and 9 months.

My ggg uncle Thomas Scott was said to have been convicted of carrying a gun and sent to ‘Australia’. He was born in 1835 and if he is the Thomas listed above, would have been only 13. Would an Irish boy in 1848 be convicted of such a thing have been sent away? Does the sentence of 7 years indicate a ‘minor’ crime such as his; I see that the other sentences listed in the schedules of prisoner transport and Muster rolls are 10, 14 and 15 years and life; for more serious crimes I assume, such as murder or serious theft.

An Ellen Scott whose trial was held in Tipperary in 1848 was shipped to Tasmania in 1849 on the Maria, was ‘position’ed in the Brickfields Depot. Where is this place and what is it? I can imagine it’s a work place for convicts or the name of the prison itself. Other positions listed in the convict muster rolls were listed as ‘hired by’ and the name of someone, usually in Hobart or Port Arthur.

Did most women serve their prison sentence as indentured servants? Some I see went to a House of Correction. Was this reserved for the unruly ones?

I read on ancestry .com that the practice of sending convicts to Australia ceased by 1858, officially by 1868. How did they deal with convicts after that? Were jails erected through out Britain and Ireland after this time?

I could see by the dates of the ships leaving that most prisoners were still in the British Isles until they were gathered on these ships (200-400 at a time) and taken to Australia. How were they detained for usually over a year before they were commuted to Australia? Did these ships go from port to port and collect the convicts that had been held? The number of convicts sent to Australia seems staggering; over 160,000. How did they fare in Australia? has there been any study of the usual length of incarceration in the prisons down under? I see many served only half of a 7 year term? Under what conditions were they getting these pardons? good behaviour, the jails filling to capacity and so the more docile prisoners were set free?

Any references to books on this fascinating history would be good posts.

Thanks,

Blaine Scott Midland ON

I've found several Scott's (Thomas and Ellen in previous posts) who could be the siblings of my ancestors I'm looking for. The records list the dates and places of trial but no reference (at least in the muster rolls and transport records) as to the nature of the crime. Is the sentence any indication? Would 7 years be typical of what kind of crime? Would a 15 year sentence be indicative of what?

What online records indicate such things?

Sincerely,

Blaine Scott

I am seeking desendants or information regarding John McFarlane, transported to Sydney on the 'Admiral Gambier' in 1808 and also Grizel/Grace Johnston, transported in 1811 on the transport 'Friends'.
They remained in the Sydney area. Grizel 'married' John, although she seems to have been 'married' to John Eddington who arrived on 'Lord Eldon' in 1817.
Tasmanian convict - Milkins

Is there anyone out there connected to a Paul Milkins transported to Tas in 1824 aboard the Princess Charlotte? He married Jane
Walsh in Tas then moved to Geelong in Victoria where my gggrandfather James was born in 1841. The surname was changed to Milikins apparently by James' son George.

I'm wanting to confirm Paul's birthplace as Somerset, born around 1801.

According to my grandparents one of our relatives was brought to Australia as a convict for stealing some rope. Im not sure of his first name all I know is that he was a McNamara. The jokes ran for a good few hours at a family gathering (his crime was KNOT a good idea etc) I have only been able to go back so far on the McNamara surname as my gr gr grandfather was murdered in 1912. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated..
Thanks

Born 16 Mar 1799 and baptised 10 Apr 1814 in Earls Colne
At the age of 36 he was convicted to seven and half years for what I'm still finding out but we think it was for stealing sheep. He was sent to New South Wales as an Australian convict on the Royal Sovereign 2 which set sale on 29th July 1935 and arrived 12th Dec 1835, on 11th Mar in 1844 he was given a passport of freedom back to England if he wanted to go . We still have yet to find out if he died there or if he returned to his family in Essex
Also possible that he fathered Henry Murrells born 1817 at the age of 17 but no records or document found for this 1861-71-81 .
Henry married Charlotte in Halstead Jul-Sept 1838 12-152
In 1871 niece, Fanny Amey, lived with him and not confirmed if any children
We would be grateful for any further information out there
Thanks
Hans and Hilda Ahlen

I found Ann Ferris listed in the Convict Muster 1837. She was assigned to Joseph Ferris in Sydney, having arrived aboard the Surrey in 1833.
There is no Ann Ferris listed aboard the Surrey 1833, so I think that she married Joseph Ferris in Australia.
I cannot find any marriage between them although I have found the birth of son James in 1835.
My ancestors's death cert states she was born overseas, the daughter of Ann Ferris, so it's likely Ann the convict had a small child with her.
Because of the timing I think Ann would have started at the Female Factory before being assigned.
Can anyone tell me if there is a searchable database for the Female Factory and for convict assignments (although a bit tricky without a surname!), or have any suggestions for finding Anns original surname?
Thanks,
Alison

If you have any convicts transported in 1847,1848, or 1849 to Tas and Norfolk Island, or exiles to NSW, have a look at "Parliamentary Papers" published 1849 on Google Books http://books.google.com/books?id=gKsSAAAAYAAJ Just put your convict's name into "search in this book", or the name of the vessel for extras such as correspondence. There are also a lot of mentions of people just by their convict number, so try that too.

Jacob Whitfield

Jacob has vanished. He was of Irish origin arriving as a life sentence convict on the Isabella 2 on 9 March 1922. He left behind his wife Mary Gowrie and four children, Mary, Catherine, Judith and William. Jacob ws born May 1774 in Balyhagen Tyrone, Northern Ireland. His four children followed Jacob to Australia a few years later. Jacob received his Ticket of Leave in 1834 No. 34/270. Jacob married Jean Connell on 2/4/1832. Jean died 21/9/1832 in HMG Hospital. Jacob married Elizabeth Smith on 11/4/1840. Elizabeth died on 12/8/1851 in the Darlinghurst Gaol. The last known location of Jacob is in the 1841 Census. Whether he was alive when Elizabeth died is unknow. So after 1841, Jacob's whereabouts is a mystery. As he had a conditinal pardon on 1/7/1841, he could not have left Australia. No death of Jacob can be traced in any Australian death indexes. Being a convict and possibly dieing before 1856 (official BDM registration commencement)would his death have been recorded in a church record? Also being a convict would he be buried in consecreated burial grounds or elsewhere? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Bob Starling - Whitfield Family Historian.
How do I find a Covicts Military Court Martial?

My ancestor Henry Rose was involved in the Upper Canada Rebellion (or not, as his crime implies!)
Henry was sent to Australia aboard the 'Maitland', departed Sheerness and arrived Australia July 1840
He was born in Huntingdonshire (UK?) and was a 'labourer and soldier'.
He was tried at an Upper Canada Court Martial on 14th Aug 1839 and was sentenced to life for Desertion.
This is the only information I have on Henry (apart from marriage, children and death). I have obtained this from the NSW Convict Indents.
From this information I think Henry was probably in the British Military.
Can anyone advise me where, how I might find further details, particularly of his trial. Was it the norm for a prisoner to be sent from Canada back to Britian and then onto Australia?
Any assistance greatly appreciated,
thanks, Alison
trying to find out more about my convict family member THOMAS PAYNE?PAIN. Arrived in Sydney town via Norfolk Island and then onto Tasmania, 1842.Ticket of leave 1847, where he went to ADELAIDE and in 1950 Married an Irish Lass. The boat was JOHN BREWER FROM LONDON. I cannot find his parents names, he never named them on anything and have spent lots of dollars trying to research this, NO RESULTS. Was paying a researcher in England, still no parents names because too many PAYNES in that era. What to do next PLEASE Thankyou Sandra Pain

Joseph Flood Convict The Boddingtons

I am a descendant of Joseph Flood via his son James Flood (1807-1886) and his wife Mary Foster. I am trying to figure out who James' mother is - it seems that there were several women who had Joseph's children - Ann Gorman, Ann Germain and Ann Jarmy (the last two are perhaps the same person??). I found James' death certificate on the NSW BDM site and his mother is listed as Nancy, though I'm aware that death certificates often have incorrect information on them.

I would be very appreciative of any clues.

Thanks.

Hi,

Does anyone have any information on Magnus Johnson, Master of the convicts ship Guildford? He married one of the Turner family that I am researching and from a quick Google, it appears that he had a very humane attitude towards the convicts that he was transporting. I believe that he got himself into trouble by allowing them to go up on deck, not in irons.

Any help greatly appreciated with any information.

regards,

Ann Sadler

I have just done my family tree website and was wondering if anybody would like to take a look.
http://macphem.tripod.com/emmasgenealogysite
I also have many CD databases for Britain and the entire list of the convicts sent out to Tasmania and I am willing to do searches for other people (I've kind of gotten to a dead end in my own research! :-)
Just send me an email and I'll see what I can do!

CULLEN Mary Anne, convict daughter

The CULLEN that I am researching is Mary Anne, married James HAMMOND at the Catholic Church Picton NSW 12.9.1857. First child Sarah Jane b. 28.6.1858 at Picton and Alice b.1860.

Mary Anne accompanied her mother, Mary on the convict transport Palambam, arrived Sydney 31.7.1831 aged 16 months. Her father was Edward, a butcher in Dublin.

She was admitted to the orphan school Parramatta on 30 October 1832 and released back into the care of her mother a few years later.

I believe her to be my 3xGGrandmother via BARRETT PELLOW and SMEDLEY.

Anybody else with the same connections?

Darryl
ABORIGINAL DNA FROM EAST ARNHEM AUSTRALIA

MY ABORIGINAL DNA FROM EAST ARNHEM AUSTRALIA:

WHAT I DID KNOW / WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW:
Through oral history and family artifacts, I had already known much of my MOORE Family history. My Moore ancestors departed Belfast Ireland and arrived in New York on March 1, 1850 aboard the Sir Henry Pottinger and now I have confirmed this through ancestry.com & rootsweb.com. But, that was not my original reason for joining. I originally became interested (and remain interested) in using these ancestry databases when I learned (much to my surprise) from WWW.DNATRIBES.COM that my mother and I both share VERY substantial (mtDNA) genetic markers from an Aboriginal, East Arnhem Australia woman.

FROM AUSTRALIA TO IRELAND:
In order to learn more about this mystery women, I have combined (what science tells us about the mtDNA trail) with (the tremendous amount of data that is available at wwww.rootsweb.com & ancestry.com . Through a long, careful, and painstaking process of elimination I have begun to see an interesting scenario about my great-great-great grandmother Margret (born 1810), who married the Irishman, William Moore (born 1810). Interestingly, I have not been able to turn up a single surname for Margret or anything about her true origins.
SCENARIO:
Did the Irishman William Moore (born 1810) spend part
of his young adult life in Australia. If so, why?
And did young William Moore bring back to Ireland
a Native East Arnhem Australia wife? If not, WHO DID?

Any clues that you could send to me about my East Arnhem Australia DNA would be greatly appreciated.

THEN, FROM IRELAND TO AMERICA:
Here is an historical and true testimony of the endurance that America has inherited from our amazingly resilient immigrant ancestors. Like so many others, my great-great-great grandparents, William & Margret Moore (both born 1810) held out as long as they possibly could during the terrible Irish famine, before finally risking everything in order to bring their eight children (plus one) to the shores of New York back in 1850. The small but sturdy sailing vessel, the Sir Henry Pottinger with her crew of 17, sailed slowly from Belfast to New York with 179 passengers, struggling to keep each other alive. A few babies were born on board during the long voyage, but it was during a terrible storm mid-way across the Atlantic Ocean, amid the sounds of loud Irish music, that a baby girl was born on her over-crowded deck, and the babe, a symbol of new life and hope, was given the name Margot Moore. She was the ninth child of my great-great-great grandparents, 40 year-old William and Margret Moore, whose eight other children were with them among the 179 passengers. (Margret, age 17 ~ Martha, age 15, ~ Robert, age 13 ~ Mathew, age 11 ~ Twins James & William John, ages 9 ~~ Thomas, age 4 ~ and Jane, age 1.) The Sir Henry Pottinger delivered my Moore clan to New York's Castle Garden on March 1st, 1850.

MY DIRECT LINEAGE:
William & Margret Moore (both born in 1810), are my great-great-great grandparents. One of their sons was my great-great grandfather, William John Moore (Twin to James), born 1841 in Ireland and died 1881 in the USA. One of his sons was my great grandfather, John William Moore, born March 30, 1865, New York and died 1954 in Los Angeles County, and is buried in Inglewood, California. One of his sons was my maternal grandfather, Roy Harvey Moore, born June 21, 1903, North Dakota and died in the arms of his beautiful second wife Maria Moore (living), with their 3 loving children (living) at his bedside in March 1984 Santa Ana, California. My Grandpa Roy Harvey Moore is also buried in Inglewood, California, near his parents.

Again, any clues that you could send to me about my East Arnhem Australia DNA would be greatly appreciated.

Spec mea Deus!
Sincerely,
Stu Hays,
stu.hays@gmail.com

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
