Hello Rootsweb, new to this but silver serfer with scant info. is desparate for help! What I am lookingfor is birth certificate for WILLIAM WATERS and perhaps a marriage of JOHN WATERS (HIS FATHER, MY GT. GRANDFATHER)
1901 CENSUS shows WILLIAM WATERS (age 36)born in Adelaide, Australia. WILLIAM (aged 24) m ELIZA ANN WOOD in Manchesterin 1888.JOHN dec'd before 1888. WILLIAM died in Manchester aged 62 in 1923 so there are some discrepancies to give an exact d.o.b., best I can do is between 1861-1865.Sent for birth certificate to Southern Australia but I got a 'no record' return, so feel I need more information.Unfortunately I have no mother's name.
I had almost given up on this, but perhaps with all you kind people I just may get through the treacle!

I am looking for info with regarding the Prestney side of my family tree. The only info that I have is that they were Showmen or Travellers from the Nayland area in Suffolk England. I have got loads of info from the Latter Day Saints, which had been submitered by a lady called Heather Morris in QL I have her full address, but dont think it right to post it. I would like to find her and see how we are connected. So someone must know her or could give pointers in the right direction.

Researching Daniel alias (Donald)O'Connor & wife Bridget Cherry, both died before 1857. Belived to have lived in Ennistomon, Parish of Killilagh Co.Clare & had 11 children,two survived? Michael O'Connor the eldest son & Thomas O'Connor the youngest.
Thomas b.1827 emigrated to Sydney Australia on board the vessal Lady Kennaway dep Liverpool 1850,listed as Farm Labourer m/f 4/4817.
Michael O'Connor b.1801 Wife Alice Scales b.1799 & son Michael b.1835 belived to be Ennistimon.Parish of Killilagh Co.Clare Ireland. Emigrated to Sydney Australia on board the vessal Admiral Lyons 13 June 1857,m/f ref 4/4965 reel 2476,listed as Farm labourers.
Settled in Calabash,Marengo (Muringo)NSW with brother Thomas.
Michael & Alice married abt 1831. Alice was the daughter of William Scales & Alice McCoy, belived Ennistimon,Co.Clare.
I have most of the family history in Australia but nothing is known of Daniel alias(Donald) & Bridget any info would be invaluable, more than happy to share my research.

Can anyone out there help me. My gg grandparents were Elizabeth Edwards who married John King. I am told Elizabeth married John in Australia in 1860. I do not know when they died but they had a daughter Harriet Amelia King born 1867 Bathurst NSW Australial. I cannot find any of their birth entries. Elizabeth may have been born in Perranuthnoe Cornwall in 1838 around June and John I am told may have been Spanish. Can anyone help me with more information. I realise both names were common. Catholic Cemetery in the old "Logan Agricultural Reserve" 1860's in South East Qld

Hullo Everybody

I am doing research on the first Catholic Cemetery in the old Logan Agricultural Reserve (about 28km south of Brisbane on the Logan River)

The Logan Agricultural Reserve was set up in the early 1860's for the incoming immigrants. The reason for this research is so a Plaque can be place in this long forgotten cemetery to mark the last resting places of our ancestors

The Immigrants, I am particularly interested in were mainly Irish and Catholic.

The Irish settled this area before the Germans.

This area is now called Logan Reserve. The Catholic Cemetery is still there, but I am unaware of any burials in it for over 120 years. There is a head stone in this cemetery Dedicated to a James Moloney, possible a migrant on the "Erin Go Bragh"

Catherine Cusack whose death certificate states buried Catholic Primary School (old Catholic Chapel site at Logan Agricultural Reserve) 7th July 1869, and is my relative hence my interest.

Other beleived persons buried there are John Rafter (Pat Rafter's Ancestor) Andrew Ryan, and Lucy Gavin ( an ancestor of the Gavins that the road called Gavins Way is named after at the back of the Gold Coast).

I believe that the Catholic Church has not got any records of persons buried there.

Any assistance from listers or others who may have relatives buried there would be greatly appreciated and or any pointers as to the direction I should procceed in.

As a tip some death certificates show place where buried as Logan River especially if it is in the period between 1862 to the 1880's

I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have information or offer advice.

He was the son of Annie E (I think Wright)who was born in Ludworth County Durham, England.Guy had four half brothers......Vivian Alport Parkinson b Dec 1889, Robert Alport Parkinson b 29.5.1904, David Alport Parkinson b 1908 and Cyril Allport Parkinson b 15.5.1911
Guy married Gladys Emma Welch in York, England in 1918 and they had a daughter Lilian Gladys born in Dec 1919 in York, England. After that I have no record other than three electoral roles 1930(Bowna NSW)/31(Spotswood, Melbourne, Victoria)/36(Dromana Melbourne) where it states he is working as a gardener.

I have a James BRADFORD, born in Pewsey, Wiltshire in 1854 who died on board the steamer CUZCO, in May 1879, from London, "James Bradford, Saloon passenger, who died of consumption." Found in an Adelaide newspaper. The ship docked after 43 days and 8 hours, [YE GODS]in Semaphore Station. Where would I look for the death certificate? I do not know if he was married and I wonder if the death certificate would tell me.

I have an ancestor who went to Australia after 1918. I have very little to go on but have found him in the Electoral Lists for 1930 and 1936. In 1930 he was in New South Wales in 1930 he was in Queensland.
I would like to find out about citizenship requirements and voting registration requirements.
Could an Englishman voted straight away and was there a registration qualification on moving states?.

They had 8 children all came here to Australia after their parents died they left England in 1890, i can tell you when they died and the years that is all i need to find out parents names now for the family tree, Isabella died in 1884 in Hythe Kent England, Thomas Latham was a coast guard and he died in Dover Kent England in 1889. Can anyone please help me find the death of my great grandmother, Elizabeth Johnson Murray(nee Nugent) she was born in 1836 in Ireland, she was married in 1859 in Sydney to Charles Murray, I do know she was at her daughter (Isabella) wedding in December 1901 in Newtown Sydney, I have looked on BDM and purchased certificates thinking it was her but to no avail.Any help or suggestions on where to go next would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for one of my relatives, who immigrated to Australia in the 1950's. His name is Siegfried Meyer, born between 1929 and 1935 in Retschow (today Bad Doberan)/Germany. He is the the son of Mr. Heinrich August Meyer and Josefa Meyer nee Wlodarczyk.
The last contact to Siegfried Meyer was during the late 1950's. After that the contact broke off, because of the closure of eastern Germany (the former GDR).

Perhaps you could provide me with some Informations about the (last) residence of Siegfried Meyer and his way to Australia or about some Institutions where I can pursue my researches.

Jack or John Cooke was born around 1916 in Stoke on Trent Staffordshire in UK. Immigrated to Australia from the UK in 1927 aboard “Largs Bay” with his mother Amelia (Ford) Cooke, brother William and sister Priscilla. They lived at Preston, near Liverpool.
Jack married Kathleen Ahern in Liverpool NSW Australia in 1942 John/Jack & Kath lived there entire in Burragorang Valley, Jack working as a coal miner all of his life. Both died around 1987 at Camden NSW. Any additional information, especially of his mother Amelia Ford or his siblings, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, I am trying to track down ancestral information about Edelbert (Albert) Lang. He was born about 1866 and we think in Germany not sure where exactly. He came to Australia in about 1890 possibly from England and I have been told he anglicized his name to Albert on the ship (Although death & marriage certificate have him listed as Edelbert). His father is Philip Lang (not sure if Philip was originally one "L" or two) and his mother is Maria E possibly anglicized to Mary. Philip Lang was born in Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany and some reports suggest he could have been late 30's or 40's when Edelbert was born although this has not been corroborated with anything. If anyone could suggest anywhere to find information it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi All, trying to track any information on John Coulson Murphy. He is said to have been born around 1821, Liverpool England. He ran away from home at an early age and went to Epsom. He then left England and went to France where it is said he stayed for a while then in 1840 found his way onto a ship travelling to the Pacific, he then jumped ship in Australia. Any information about his life before Australia or his voyage out here would be greatly appreciated. Asking for help with this, anyone with any information on Esther Christina Dusseldorf, believed to be born 1862 Frankfurt, Germany, arrived in Australia 1881, married John Henry Williams (he is also listed sometimes as Henry John or Henry Williams. Her father was Otto Dusseldorf, a seaman/sailor. Can anyone help me with ancestors for this woman?

Trying to trace any information about John Coulson Murphy before 1840 which is when he arrived in Australia, although any information of his actual voayge would be good too. I’m looking for any help or information on tracing my family from Cork. John Ahern was born around 1847 in Cork died 1922 Liverpool NSW Australia; he was listed as being a farmer. It looks like he immigrated to Australia as a child (with his parents) and lived in Casula, Liverpool NSW Australia.

He married a Margaret Sooel in Liverpool NSW Australia on 11th Sept 1884. John died in 1922 in Liverpool NSW, and Margaret died 1938. (Any help with the Sooel family would be much appreciated)

John & Margaret had 5 children, John Matthew (my grandfather) Ann, Margaret, Bartholomew & Mary.

John’s father was William b 1800, Cork Ireland and d 1871 Wollongong NSW Australia. William married Catherine Smith b 1809 Ireland and d 1879 Wollongong NSW. William & Catherine had 17 children: John, Bridget, Mary, Anne, Julia, and Alexander Hamilton? William, Jane, Catherine, Elizabeth Frances, Ellen, Thomas, John, James, Teresa, Tresa & Patrick

William’s father was also William and this is where the trail goes cold! I have no information on William’s spouse.

Australian search for Charles Thomas Sharman

Greetings from England!

I am trying to track down Charles Thomas Sharman born Edenham, Lincolnshire, England in 1855. My last "sighting" in the UK is in the census of 1881. He seems to be missing from the UK 1891 and 1901 censuses.

I had almost given up on him, but whilst messing about on a p.c. yesterday I found two references to someone of that name on Australian Electoral rolls of 1930 and 1936.

The 1930 one shows a storekeeper living at Edenham, Sydney Road, Balgowrah, Warringah, NSW. If Edenham is his house name, it's a big clue that he might be our man. Also he was working in a shop in south London in 1881.

The 1936 one shows an inhabitant of 37b Beach Road, Edgecliffe, Woollahra, Wentworth, NSW.

In 1930 Charles Thomas Sharman would have been 65, so probably still working. I would have thought that he might have retired by 1936 - hence the move if he's the same man.

My question really is this - are there any free to view Australian censuses available from this side of the planet? That might help me find out more about CTS if he did emigrate from England to Australia. Any other accessible resources would also be appreciated.

A Lost Infant

I wonder if someone with access to Australian material could do me a favour. While I am familiar with searching in the English records, I am still a novice with Australia!!! I have lost an infant:
Florence Harriet Benson Bradford
I found her birth on freeBMD born @ Sculcoates, Yorkshire, 4/4 of 1874.
This infant figures prominently in an ancestor's will. Edmund George Benson died in Australia in 1880. Poor Edmund promptly died upon arrival in Australia. He leaves this child a very large bequest---but I have no idea which Bradford family she belongs with. [at this point I do not want to order her birth certificate] I cannot find her in the English census and I wonder if she was the unnamed child that accompanied James Edward Bradford when he left England for Australia with the above mentioned Edmund Benson. James Bradford died enroute to Australia and I have no idea what was the wife's first name. Not only have I lost the infant, but I have lost her mother as well. I know that they are out there somewhere floating in cyberspace. I would be most appreciative!

After the death of Charles in 1875, Margaret remarried in Perth, Western Australia, Thomas Alfred/Alfred Thomas Sutton,also a convict per'Clyde'. There were six issue from his union. The male children assumed the surname of Wood.

I think she married out there and I have been told that when she died there was a notice put in an English paper looking for relatives as there was money left to family. Thomas Shaw Whitby Gray is my GG Grandfather. He was born in London in 1840 and died in New South Wales, Australia in 1921. I have been researching the Gray Family Tree for a few years now and have not been able to find much information on Thomas and his wife Mary Jane Moran- (parents Luke Moran and Ann Byrnes from Australia).

She travelled to Australia in July 1924 under her married name arriving in Sydney. Sadly she died 1926. Much to my surprise I located an ancestor that has eluded me for 20 years. Edmund George Benson was born in Wiltshire in 1837 and I found his death in Queensland in Feb. 1880. Searching in Australia is a totally new experience for me and I feel lost!.I have a copy of his will in which he leaves a very large estate to his 3 cousins: William Keysall Bradford , George Benson Bradford , Harriet Jane Bradford and an infant, Florence Harriet Benson Bradford. I believe George Benson Bradford and William Keysall Bradford lived in Australia . I GOOGLED their names and came up with a "SLAUGHTER" site that gave the last known offspring as one Harold Patterson Bradford who died in 1945. I would appreciate suggestions about how I might go about finding any living offspring.

I have a marriage certificate for my great uncle. Alfred Ed Gibson married Sarah Mary Kelly, March 1, 1902 In Sydney. The certificate has both of them as living at 89 Phillips street. Balmain.

Esther SMILEY (var. SMYLIE, SMYLY) emigrated from Co. Tyrone, Ireland circa 1890. She was born c. 1865 to James SMILEY and Elizabeth (aka Betty) CAMPBELL. Our family lost track of her (my great aunt, who was her niece said that no letters were ever received from Esther).

We don't know where she emigrated to in Australia, hence the problem in trying to figure out what happened to her.

I am hoping that there is an Australian marriage or death on Esther. If she married, I suspect it would've taken place circa 1890s.

James was left with his grandparents Hugh and Mary Sweeney of Letterkenny, Donegal. Mary Sweeney would have arrived in Australia sometime after the birth in 1876.
LDS familysearch site has Patrick Langan and Mary Sweeney as parents to James Langan, born Jan.9 1876, Letterkenny Donegal. They were probably not married.

Frederick Henry George, born in about 1881.
We were told he was from Australia and fought in WW1 and came over to the UK either during or just after the war ended.
After the war he was a draughtsman and worked for the telephone company, he lived in Manchester England and could have lived in London.
He met Lillian Watt born in Chorlton Manchester, I dont know if they married but they had 2 children 1 in about 1923/4 the other 1927.
I CANNOT FIND HIM!!!!!!!!!!

I'm hoping to find out more about my Grandfather, Benjamin CURTIS. Benjamin was the son of James CURTIS and Frances Ann THORNE [nee EAMES], and he was born in Goulburn NSW about 1882. He married Pearl Alma Irene BRUCE in Albany NSW in 1908. In 1916 Benjamin applied to enlist in the First AIF but because of his poor eyesight, he was rejected as Medically Unfit. I can find no record of his whereabouts since then, and I do not know where when or how he died. Is anyone able to provide more information, please?

Further to my post of june 08 I have now found more information on the Catherine McDonald that I was searching for. Her maiden name was Cutmore born in Pentridge (old name for Coburg) in abt.1854 father George Cutmore mother Ann 'Annie' O'Brien or Bryan.
She married John Maxwelll McDonald in 1878 Melbourne his parents Maxwell McDonald & Elizabeth Harfold.
I am now searching for any decendants and/or anyone who may have knowledge of a connection with either the McDonalds or Cutmore family to Woodbridge family even neighbors etc. I would appreciate any information.

They were meant to have married in Kalgoorlie and Alex was supposed to have been born in Kalgoorlie and was three when they went to n.z. but percy changed his name to BARTON in n.z.

Donald Currie born Islay Scotland, parents are Alexander Currie and Mary Bowie, McDonald, Currie. his wife Jannet McDonald daughter of John McDonald called the prophet, Jane McDougal born Nottawasaga Township Simcoe Co Ont Canada, lived in Egremont Twp Grey Co Ont, had 4 children before 1871 census, one after. The children in 1881 census with their uncle Dougal Currie, Margaret McFadyen and there children. Story is that they moved to Australia, the parents before 1881 census, children after. I'm trying to find information on my 2x great grandmother.

Catherine Larkin was married to Frederick Henry Delmage and she died 1937 in Western Australia. As i'm currently unable to afford her marriage or death certificate any time soon i was hoping there might be someone out there who can help.

What i'm essentially looking for is when and where she was born and who her parents were.

Can anyone help me please??

Is anyone going to the State Records Office please???

HI,
I live a long long way from Sydney, and would be incredibly grateful if anyone was going to the State Records office and could look at the folowing records for me please.

My family arrived aboard the 'Lady McNaghton' on 26 Feb 1837. These records are apparently inconsistent in their content, and so the records office encourages viewing and does not offer ordering. I would like to know if the indexes contain ANY additional info on my family, that might help trace them further in their homeland Ireland, or in NSW. I am also wondering if there is any record of any of the family dying of Typhoid- I can only trace the father Michael and 2 sons in NSW- where did the rest of the family go...

The family are:

Elizabeth " aged 32
David " aged 14
William " aged 13
John " aged 9
Thomas " aged 7
Julia " aged 5
Honora " aged 3
Elizabeth " aged 1.5

looking for information on a John William Mitchell B=1808 Bristol Somerset England married Elizabeth Cryer B=1820in Dublin they married V1839193222/1839 in Bathurst NSW he died 4105/1861 Orange NSW would like to know how I could find his parents and maybe any siblings names not listed on BDM and also when they came to Australia all help is much appreciated.

Hi does anyone have any information on the family of Andrew Mair and Marion Paterson of Crofthead farm Tarbolton Ayrshire Scotland who came to Australia about 1853. A family member Cyndie Mair contacted me about 2 years ago but we have both since changed email addresses and I have not been able to obtain any information on this one of my Mair families. Andrew Mair is descended from John Mair farmer Hillhead farm, Newmilns. He died 1820 and over 2500 descendants and spouses are now known of. Anyone any ideas about this family. Hi Everyone,
Can you please help I am looking for information on Charles Murray and Elizabeth/Eliza Johnson Nugent I don't know their date of birth or marriage I think he died 4206/1884 and she died 2572/1909 both in Newtown NSW I think they are from Ireland, I do know they had 2 daughters Isabella May(my grandmother)born 1876 and Ethel Maude born 5205/1880 in Newtown NSW.I am only quite new to this and I don't know how to go about searching overseas records if anyone could help me it would be very much appreciated.I have done a search on ancestry that is how I found Ethel it had some information on them although the dates don't match up to the chidrens ages.HELP!!
