Lyden connection

Hi everyone
I'm the eldest child of Caroline Lyden, the eldest child of Frank(aka Francis)Lyden, son of Robert Lyden(Snr) As I was growing up I was aware that my grandfather's (Frank)brothers and sisters were: Celia, John, Robert, Henry, Esther, Isabel(aka Belle)and Jessie. I know I've probably left someone out! I was always aware that Neiafu and Vava'u were 'home'. The one I was closest to was Aunty Esther (my great-aunt). She is currently living in Perth. Her children are: Ronnie, Ofa, Lesley, Esther, Charlene, Vincent and Duncan. Apart from Ronnie, who was living in the UK, the rest live in Australia. I think a few of the Lyden siblings had big tribes! Aunty Jessie married a Japanese man. She was awarded recently for her services during WWII. You can see more about it via this link: http://tvnz.co.nz/view/video_popup_windows_skin/658283
I think a thread or 2 back there is a bit of misinformation re: who belonged to which generation and/or who their siblings were. No doubt this is because the names have been repeated, more than once, in each generation. For this reason I have only included what I know for sure.
I wasn't entirely sure of whether we were Irish or Scottish or a mix of both. I did know that Robert Lyden's mother was a Johnson. Apparently, back in Vava'u, the Lydens were a very well-off and respected family in their time, with servants etc. Nowadays the servants are the children!!!
I really appreciate all the info people are sharing. Look forward to hearing more.
Take care
Teresa (officially) but known as Lisa by the Lydens - a long story :)

Seeking contact with any descendants of Ma`afu, sometimes called Enele Ma`afu or Ma`afu of Fiji, who was born in Tongatapu about 1826 and died in Lomaloma, Vanuabalavu, Fiji on 6 Feb 1881. He was a son of Aleamotu`a, Tu`i Kanokupolu, and Moala. Ma`afu married Elelnoa Gataialupe in Nuku`alofa in 1840. He went to Fiji in 1847 and remained there, although made several visits to Tonga thereafter. His and Elenoa's only surviving son was Sialeata`ogo, who died in Nuku`alofa in 1883. Elelnoa returned to Tonga in 1885. I am seeking contact with descendants for a biography currently being written.

This is a message for Sekope.....I read your communications with my cousin Emeline and would love to get a copy of the ancestory file that you have. My grandfather is Penisimani Latuselu and my father is the late Sione Ahoatu Latuselu. The names that you mentioned like Ilaise are people that I remember my father talking about. I would really love to know what info you have. The reason my grandfather had the name "Young" was because he worked for a man named Young....there's no other connection except that people knew him by that. Unfortuantely my grandfather didn't always make good choices and he has a bit of a dark past from the stories my father told me. Nevertheless I am his descendant and am looking for as much info as I can find.

Thank you

Ana

I am looking for a cousin by the name of Lusia (born on either the 08th or 09th of October 1988). She left for Tonga with her grandmother when she was only 2 months old. Her father is Samoan and her mother is Tongan. I have always known her mothers name as Ana, but I think she might go by the name Tilila Vaga. The Grandparents name (I think) are Suliasi and Lepatuu Vaga. Lusias mothers siblings names (not too sure) are Mele Taufa, Tuai, Sulia, Piu, Sifa, Iki, Tuli, Tupe etc. If anyone recognises these people, please reply back to me a.s.a.p. We are having a family reunion soon and would love to meet up with her. Malo Aupito!

First, Christine Liava'a thank you for everything you do to help people with their family history. I am sure you are a Godsend.
Is there any way to see if a man named William Charles Young or a Henry Charles Young applied for British passports or were registered with the British Consul? William Charles Young is the father of Henry Charles Young. Henry was born in Samoa but moved to Tonga. I don't know when. William supposedly moved there too and had posterity there. I am interested to see if there is any record of where William Charles Young is originally from. We have been told he is from England. I am not so sure about that anymore. Henry was born in 1832, supposedly. I have checked Familysearch but it does not help in finding out where William is from. Thanks again for all the help you give to people.

William Charles Webb

Seeking information on ancestors/descendants/siblings of William Charles Webb, born 1844, I think in the Tonga
(Friendly Islands). Was a Methodist missionary, son of a William Webb, (no info what so ever).

Here's all I know about W.C. Webb's ancestry, and any help would be extremely appreciated!

Obituary from: "Official Journal and Year Book of the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church - One Hundred and Eighteenth Session held in Allentown, Penna., March 15-21 1905." (page 83)
William Charles Webb, D.D.

Rev. William Charles Webb, D.D., son of Rev. William Webb, one of the first missionaries to the Friendly Islands, was born on one of these islands in 1844, and passed from us to his heavenly home in Philadelphia October 27th, 1904. The funeral services were held in Seventh Street Church with appropriate addresses by Rev. Floyd Tomkins, D.D., Rev. Russel H. Cromwell, D.D., and Rev. S.M. Vernon, D.D., and prayer was offered by Rev. James Morrow, D.D. His life touched many countries, but his ministry was passed mostly in America, serving churches in widely-separated cities.. He was educated in New Kingswood College, Bath; entered the British Conference in 1864, and served two years in South Wales. He spent one year in France for his health, and in 1867 was appointed to Queenstown, South Africa. Here and at Cape Town, seven years were passed. In 1875 he came to the United States, and was for some time assistant to Rev. Thomas Guard while pastor of Mount Vernon Place Church, Baltimore. He was afterward pastor of Alexandria, Va.; Meridian Street, Indianapolis; Ames Church, New Orleans; Mount Vernon Place, Philadelphia; Christ Church, Philadelphia; Pottsville; Seventh Street, Philadelphia, and Kensington, Philadelphia, and for the last seven years he was General Secretary of the Evangelical Alliance of Pensylvania. While pastor of Alexandria, Va., hea was marries to Miss Sue Harmon, who for twenty-five years was his faithful helper in the joys and trials of the ministry, and with six children survives him.

He was a choice spirit, shrined in a body too frail to give adequate expression to his impulses and aspirations, or to bear the strain of his tireless energy. With feminine gentleness he united masculine strength of thought and action; evangelistic by the impulses of the spiritual lifein him, he was yet a master of organization and attention to details; careful in pulpit preparation, he was also attentive to pastoral duties; an ardent Methodist, he was at home with people of all creeds, and he was a brother to men of all faiths if only they had the Master's spirit. Even in early manhood, when vital energy was at its best, his gentleness, forbearance, patience and quiet endurance of wrong showed the innatenobility of his nature. He was never less than a gentleman, was always a minister, and yet was warmly and earnestly human, responding cordially to all the claims of sympathy and fellowship. His fine sensitiveness may have made him seem shy and indifferent in a chilly or unfriendly atmosphere, when in reality he was longing for sympathy and brotherliness. Though choice in his tastes and associations, none were too lowly or obscure to claim the full measure of his taciful pastoral devotion, and upon him often fell the benedictions of the poor whose distresses he had relieved.

Under the trials of a changing ministry, in Europe and America, East, West and South, he bore himself with courage and Christian magnanimity, accepting change and hardness as his providential allotment under the guidance of infinite wisdom. As a preacher he was always instructive, practical and helpful; more expository than horatory, yet not lacking in sympathy with every phase of human need, nor in skill for adapting divine truth to its relief. Impressive in the pulpit and strong as an organizer, yet his best results were secured by personal effort, and many were the souls that he lite rally "plucked as brands from the burning." One of the brightest pages of his history was the splendid service he rendered in relieving the poor during a severe winter of industrial depression, while pastor of Seventh Street Church, Philadelphia. His devotion and perfect self-abandon in this work entitles him to a place in the calendar of saints. One of his most conspicuous and useful gifts was his ability to raise money for the work he had in hand. This was due partly to tact in presentation, skill in representation and pertinacity and insistence in a kindly spirit.

To those who came close to him his brotherliness was of a strength, finess of quality and tenacity of grip rarely met with, the treasure of a fifetime. He ardently loved good men, stood loyally by them, was ready to render them any service, and it mattered little to him to what church or party they belonged.

It was fitting that such a life should have a serene and sunlit closing. He had a long illness, and death buffeted him rudely as he approached the end, but his confidence never faltered, nor did his hope grow dim. Without a cloud in the sky, at peace with God and men, declaring that his only trust was "in Jesus' blood and righteousness," he quietly passed within the veil.
The current Pulepule title holder is Pulepule Steve Young who is the owner of Pasefika Inn in Vaisigano downtown Apia. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to help you on your quest. His mother, Logoipulotulemapuataii Iliganoa Pulepule is the daughter of Pulepule Fanolua who's father is a direct descendant of the Tongan Royal Family. Steve's sister, Sarah (married to Foni Retzlaff- Samoa's Deputy Prime Minister) was a royal guest at a Royal Birthday function in Tonga last year where the Pulepule and Tongan Royal family connections were reaffirmed .. hope this helps ..I'll be checking your progress .. I'm Steve's youngest brother by the way ..

Marriage of William(or Frederick) Bailey to Myra Everett

I would love to find any information on my grandfather who I never met. I think he married my grandmother in Tonga as they were both working there at the time. My father was born in 1919 in Nelson, New Zealand, so we think the marriage would have occured between 1915 and 1919. Grandfather was named either William or Frederick Bailey. All our family history has been lost so I would appreciate any help in locating records of my Grandfather. We believe he was an American. Thank you

We are urgently looking for a way to obtain a birth certificate for a young man who needs to prove his identity in NZ, as his mother had lost his birth certificate and passport. He has to start studying at a polytech on Monday 19 February, but were informed by Work and Income that they can't help him with a student allowance because he cannot produce a birth certificate/passport. THis may mean he cannot begin his studies, and we are really trying hard to get him away from his existing circumstances. Could you please help me with finding a way of getting a birth certificate here as quickly as possible for him. He is Filipo Fifita, was born in TOnga on 14 May 1988.

I am trying to help a young boy who has just finished school to apply for a copy of his birth certificate in TOnga. However, I cannot seem to find anywhere to do this. It is a matter of real urgency, as he was accepted at a Polytech to study animation here in NZ and is supposed to start on Monday 19 February, and has now been informed by social services that they cannot help him with a student allowance because he has not got a birth certificate or passport. He has no money and no home. His mother claims to have lost his birth certificate and passport. We cannot rely on her help, the circumstances are terrible, so I am trying to help. How quickly can we prove his identity?
He has a photocopy of his Permanent residency and personal information part of the lost passport which we obtained from the high school he went to. This was not enough for them though. They want the first page of his passport or a birth certificate.
His name is Filipo Fifita and was born in TOnga on 14 May 1988.
Thank you for your help.
Kind regards
Bastienne Kruger

I am looking for the man who is my real biological father. My mother is no help at all. All my life I have thought he was Richard Acosta but I have recently found out that that may not be true. I talked to a man that I had thought was my fathers brother. He told my that before I was born my mother had moved to Louisiana for about a year and when she came back to Texas I was born not long after. If any one in Louisiana or Texas knew a Betty Jo Hinton in 1973 she would have been about 22 I think please contact me.

Trying to find my biological father

I am trying to locate my bio-father, he was a sergent in the U.S Airforce back in 1966-1967. The man who I know and have always known as my bio-father, up until a year ago; was an officer in the U.S Airforce during the same time his name is Lewis C. Patterson. My mom lived on base with my dad(Lewis) along with my oldest sister, who would have been about 1 or 2 years old back then. This Airforce base was located somewhere in California. My mom was believed to have had an affair with this man that I'm looking for, her name was Louise M. Patterson back then, she was about 21 or 22 years old. Shortly after my dad(Lewis) caught them fooling around, she was pregnant with me. It has been said that they kept slient about the whole thing and the man that I know as my father rasied me as his own. I am 34 years old now and was born in 1967. Please if any one has any info, I would like too know.

McKEOWN/CULLEN marriage in Tonga

I know that Tonga is NOT SAMOA but it is the closest place I can find on the map.
Can anyone help me with a marriage query. My gggrandfather William Bernard (or sometimes Bernard William) McKEOWN married Elizabeth Bridget CULLEN in about 1883 in Tonga South Seas. I understand there are indexes available for marriages around that time. Can anyone tell me who to contact in Tonga to find out details of this marriage. I would appreciate any help in this matter.
Regards
Vicki
