In the Sund Parish Registers for 1832 and 1834 I found two Wilhelmsen marriages. The place of birth was listed as Buk (or Brik) van Raa (and also Raae). Can anyone tell me where this is? Is it a farm in Norway? Or is it in another county - perhaps the Netherlands?
Sure could use some help on this one!!!
Hi,
I am from Australia and I am having trouble figuring out how to search for my Norwegian ancestor.
Charles Thompson was born in Bergen anywhere from 1858-1868. His father's name is thomas as listed on Charles death certificate. I am unsure as to his exact birth year because on his death certificate (1942) it gives his age as 84 which means he would have been born around 1858. But on his son's birth certificate (1895)he lists his age as 27 which means he would have been born around 1868.

Also from his death certificate it states that he lived in the Australian colonies (New South Wales) for 60 years which would mean he arrived in 1882.

He married in Australia in 1888.

If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it as I'm really very confused.

I am trying to find a death record for Petra Mathilda Wilhelmsen nee Madsen, born 15 Nov 1837 in Manger, Hordaland, Norway; baptized 1 Dec 1837 at Manger Parish. Father: Peder Mathias Madsen; Mother: Madam Beatrice Madsen nee Engelsen? Petra married 9 April 1858 to Claus Olai Wilhelmsen. Four children: Bernhard, Minde, Claudina (my great-grandmother), and Arent.
She and her husband appear in the 1900 census of Bergen with son Arent. Husband Claus died 1915 and his record indicates he was a widower, so Petra would have died between 1900 and 1915. Have searched all Parish registers in Bergen for that period available on the Digital Archives of Norway, but cannot find a death recorded for Petra.

Can anyone help me find my Great Great grandfather and grandmothers ancestor's in Norway? I believe Ingvald and Martha were married in Bergen or Oslo Norway and came to the U.S. in around 1897. They settled in South Dakota, and possibly briefly in Iowa. They changed their name to Lokoen, after the island that Invald was from. (Lok island?) I do not know of the name of the ship they came on. Invald was born about 1883 and Martha was born about 1890 I think (it could have been earlier). Any information anyone could share would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you

Bergen Residence Codes

Could someone please direct me to an explanation of the residence codes used in Bergen.

I have a number of examples.

The first example is the marriage of Thrond (Trond Trondson) Selsing and Ingeborg Johannesen in 1839 in Domkirken.

Domkirken Kirkebøk 1821-1840 p.473 #28.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8643&i...

The birthplace/residence column entry appears to be
(the XX are parts I can't read)
fodt Sogndal XX fjeld
Bagn Sj xx79
11 nodre N XX 183
fodt Haderslev

The sponsor column reads:
Anders Selsing
i 11 R N XX 183
Fred Kresting
11 R. N 180?

The second example is the baptism Andrine Elline, the first child of the above couple in Korskirken in 1840.

Korskirken Kirkebøk 1833-1841 p.285 #99, the first one on the page.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8685&i...

The code for the parents is 20-14, and also for one of the sponsors, the paternal grandfather, Thron Selsing.

For three of the sponsors, the code is 11-183.
For the other one, Erich Smidt, the code is 17-6.

A similar example is the baptism of Ingeborg Jacobine, the last child born to the above couple.

Korskirken Kirkebøk 1841-1851
#25 top of page.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1960&i...

Now the parents address is 17-1. Sponsors are at 17-7, 24-11, 15-1, 20-1, 3-5

The last example is in the 1875 Bergen census.

There were 26 people on the 2nd floor of 12-68.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

I discovered in trying to go back to this address, that I had to search it in two parts. Apparently the search engine can't deal with a hyphen.

Ingeborg Selsing, now a widow, is #16324 in the first col. but I don't know how to search on that, since the column isn't labeled.

Ingeborg Selseng, (res) 2den Etage (2nd floor), Logerende (lodger), e (widow), (born) Handarbeide 1809, Hadersleben i Schlesvig, (address) 12-68

Her youngest daughter, Ingeborg Jacobine, #16323, is just above her.

Thank you.
Lars Severin Brynelsen

Lars Severin Brynelsen married Anna Martine Nilsdatter, per Askøy/Strudshavn church records, on October 14, 1884.

On January 26, 1887 they had a daughter, Marie Nilsine. Her mother is shown to be Anna Martine Nilsdtr (born 1861).

On November 23, 1889, Lars had a son named Lauritz Martin. The mother is shown to be Marthe Nilsdtr (born 1863) as opposed to Anna Martine Nilsdatter.

On September 26, 1892, Sofie Christine was born to Lars and to this Marthe Nilsdtr.

Then on June 17, 1895, Amanda Emelia was born - This time to Lars and Anna Martine Nilsdatter and on June 8, 1900, Anna Sevilda Beanka was born to Lars and Anna Martine Nilsdatter.

All of the children are recorded as legitimate and I can find no record of Lars remarrying anyone by the name of Marthe Nilsdatter.

In the 1900 census, Lars and Anna Martine appear to be living together with their entire family at a farm called Solheim.

I'm puzzled by the first, fourth and fifth child being recorded as being the children of Anna Martine Nilsdatter and then the second and third being born to Marthe Nilsdatter.

My wife is the granddaughter of Sofie Christine (the third child listed). I'm confused as to who I should be trying to trace for the maternal ancestry of Sofie.

Is there anyone out there who is at all familiar with this family who might be able to give me an answer to this puzzle? If so, I would be grateful for your help.

Ron Berkland

I am searching for descendants of either Olaf Johannesen(1883, Hundven, Lygra) or Gustav (1884) Johannesen Hundven, sons of Johannes Kristoffer Olsen Hundven (1856) and Kari Gullaksdtr. (1860). They moved to Bergen by 1900 and are located in that census. I found their marriages in 1900 and 1904. Einar Johannesen is believed to be one descendant (he was living in Bergen in 1975). Any names or suggestions would be appreciated. (P.S. I have put out a query on the Hordaland list as well for help with the Lindaas "bygdebok". If anyone has access to that and is willing to check it for the family, please let me know. Thanks so much for reading this.)

We've been told that our grandfather Sjur Helgesen Waage/Vaaga (born April 15, 1865) and his younger brother Daniel Helgesen Waage/Vaaga (born 1871) left Haugesund/Avaldsness/Kopervik Norway in 1883 for America. It has become a mystery how they came over. The story is they worked as seamen but Daniel was so young at the time. We can't find entry information on this end. Can anyone help us look for information from the Norwegian records to see if their names are listed as immigrating at that time? Thanks.

WHAT'S IN A NAME? Seeking HELP in my research!!

I am researching my GG and GGG grandfathers from Norway. However there have been 2 different last names that have popped up on documents for my GGGGrandfather. My GGrandfather, Louis W. Hogan Louis was born in Bergen, Norway 18 May, 1850. He immigrated in 1869 to Wisconsin. On 29 Feb 1880 he married Nicolene Anderson in Crawford County, Seneca, Wisconsin. On the marriage certificate Louis Hogan's father and mother are listed as Hogan Swanson and Sarah Swanson both born in 1828 in Norway. It is not known if they too are are from Bergen or if the immigrated with Loius. On Louis W. Hogan's death certificate his father is listed as Haaken Kleeve and his mother Sarah -----, no maiden name given. Loius died 8 May, 1910 in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he is buried. I am so confused. Can anyone help me understand what these last names mean or how Hogan became my last name??? I am desperately looking to find out more on my mysterious GGGGrandfather.

Thankyou in advance!

Tina Hogan

Olsen's in Bergen or Stavanger

I have been searching for information on my great grandfather, Carl(Karl)Olsen b. 14 Oct 1879 in Bergen, Norway. His parents were Knute Olsen and Susan _?_. He had 2 sisters:Hannah and Sarah; 4 brothers:Olaf, Sam,Levi and Louis.I have no birthdates/places for any of them.
Carl came to the US by himself at the age of 12..supposedly his parents stayed in Norway. (Carl was to go to Des Moines, Iowa to live with relatives who were already there. Do not know any names for these relatives. He also lived in South Dakota...I found that he purchased some land in Meade County in 1911. He eventually moved west to Oregon.) Don't know if his siblings stayed or went elsewhere, other than Sam--he worked on a ship..don't know what he did...he either died on the ship or while at port. Supposed to be buried in Rio de Janerio.Don't have any dates for this event.
Carl told his daughter(my grandmother) that his "papers" are still in the Lutheran Church in Bergen...I'm assuming these papers are probably his birth/baptismal records. I would love to find the Church book with his records, but of course we do not know the area of Bergen that they were in. (We're pretty sure his father was a fisherman, so that would probably put them near the sea).
The family moved from the Bergen area to the Stavanger area, but we have no dates as to when this happened.
I'm assuming that Carl left Norway via Stavanger, but haven't been able to find anything to prove this. We also have no departure date, ship name, or arrival date to the US. I have checked all the usual sites (Digital Archives, census info, etc.) but have been unable to locate any of these family members. Is there a Digital Archives site for Stavanger, such as the one for Bergen? Do any of these Olsen's fit in with anyone else?
Any information is very much appreciated. You may email me direct also. Thanks in advance, Valerie Reynolds

Can some one please give me some general advice about tracing my great grandfather who came from Norway to Wales probably in the 1880s. I have VERY LITTLE information to go on. Grandfather Elias Williams born in Norway 1876, father William Williams, sailor. There is a story that when the family came from Norway they changed their name to Williams to become more Welsh in character but that their original name would have been very similar in Norway, possible Williamsson. Can anyone suggest to me what their original name might have been.I know that this is very basic but I have to start some where.Where can I look to find records of people who left Norway in the 1880s.
Very grateful for any help.
Best wishes, Sue Ware,Brecon, Wales.
Johannes Fristad (b.1859) was a constable for many years (1880-1900) in Bergen.
Anyone have any leads toward Police (konstable) records in Norway?
There are a few questions in specific:
1) Military/officers school - where did he attend?
2) Why he left Bergen for the United States after 20 years of service? Records of discharge?
3) Any information Police records might have would aid me in researching the individual's background.
Thanks.

Looking for relatives from Bergen

I am looking for family of Martha Johnson (my great grandmother). She was born in Bergen, Hordaland on 26 Oct 1869. She came to the U.S. by herself (as far as I know) in 1890, settled in Washington State, married a Swedish man, Andrew Johnson, and died in childbirth in 1905. Her husband died 3 years later. They left 5 sons and 1 daughter. My grandpa was the oldest son.

According to marriage records in Tacoma, Washington, Martha's father's name was John Nelson and her mother was Rakel Autouson. I was named Rakel after this great-great grandmother.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Andrew and Martha also had a Margret Autouson living with them (age 41) who was called the aunt-in-law, and she migrated from Norway in 1885. I assume she is Rakel's sister. This is all I know about Martha's family. If anyone could please help me, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Rakel

I am trying to find information on my father. He came to USA in 1923 from Bergen. Born March 23, 1900, Martin B. Midtbo which changed to Midbo upon arrival on the Stavangerfjord. His place of residence is listed as Askvold, Norway. His father is listed as Berent Midtbo from Gryttoren, Sondfjord and his mother's name was Thea. I can't find any of these places on the map and he always said he came from Bergen. I would love to find any of his family or any information. Thank you.

Looking for infor regarding Sjur Reinertson and his wife Anna Nilsdatter who apparently obtained the Sonnes gaard in 1804. Sjur's son Niels and wife Martha I believe had 6 children: Reinert, Sjur, Anna, Anna, Niels, and Torres. I believe the Sydnes farm was on Monastery Island or Halsnoy?
My wife and I visited Bergen in June taking her brother and sister, who traveled with us from Wisconsin, to visit the farm in Unneland where their grandfather, Mikkel Anderson, was born in 1861.

When Mikkel was born his mother, Ingeborg Knutsdatter born 1839, was not married but was shown on the Unneland farm in 1860 with her mother. We never knew what happened to Ingeborg after that.

Searching the on line Digitalarkivet for 1875 and also for 1900 I have found that an Ingeborg Knutsdatter. It appears that she was married to Velum Velosken, born 1841, and lived at a farm named Telnaes at Fjell.

Can anyone help me to verify that this is the same Ingeborg?

Thank you

John Ziehr
jziehr@wildblue.net

Ole Ottesen from Bergen b. 1833

I am seeking my husband's ancestors. His great-great-grandfather, Ole/Olaf Ottesen came to the USA from Bergen via Sweden in the 1880s. Ole was born 8 Nov 1833 in Bergen, Norway, and died 16 March 1902 in Tustin, Michigan, USA.

According to his death record and family papers, his father was Ole Ottesen as well, and his mother was Anna, possibly Mina Anna Johnson/Jansen. As far as I can tell, they never came to America.

Ole/Olaf had many sisters and brothers, but we seem to have lost the letter which told of their names.

I have found an Ole Christian Ottesen on the 1866 Census of Bergen, who may well be my husband's grandfather. He is recorded in an amazing household, with three women over fifty years of age, and an assortment of other men, women and children.

Does anyone have any information on this Ole Christian Ottesen, or clues as to how I would find more, so as to ascertain whether or not this is my husband's ancestor?

(I'm still not sure why I'm not looking for Otto Something as the immigrant's father, but the family insists that that Ole's father was Ole Ottesen, and not Otto. I can live with that.)

Looking for marriage records

Is there a way I can find information about a marriage when I don't know the parish where the marriage took place? I am trying to find information about the marriage of Christence Marie Meyer and Niels Nielsen. Niels was a sailor from Denmark and Christence was born in Bergen.

I have found Christence's family in the the digitalarchives. Her father was Christian Magnus Meyer and her mother was Cecilia Fredrikke Olsen. Both of her parents died before she married.

I have copies of Niels' and Christence's death certificates which verifies that they were married. I know that they were married on or before 1879 (first child was born in 1879).

I am trying to find the marriage information in hopes it will give me leads to finding Niels' parents in Denmark.

Thank you
Tonia

My late husband Greatgrandparents.

His Greatgrandfather was supposed to have been bringing horses to the U.S.A.

When on the ship he met a girl who worked for the White family, who owned the ship. This was when it was the White Star Line.

They married against the wishes of both their families and lived in Ireland.

I believe he changed his Surname to Houston. It must have been very similar in Norwegian.

How can I find out about this family?

Catherine.

Help to tranlate words on back of photo

I have 2 photo albums that came in a box of books I purchased at an auction house. Many of the original photos have been removed, but there are still quite a few left, including tintypes. I am trying to figure out how to get them to the families they came from. Most are not id'd, however, there is one of a man taken in Christiana by Ernst Emil Aubert Fotograf, Christiania That has some words written on the back.

I am told that "Til" would mean To:
It looks like the name is Einar Nyhuus. The rest I am not sure of but it looks as though it probably says 1-31 of (month?) 1875.

Is there some place where the numbers one to thirty one and the names of the months would be written out where I could compare them to what I have in front of me to see if I can figure it out?

Annie in Minnesota

AKRE Family Bible with names and dates

There is a Lutheran Family Bible c. 1820-30 in the Brass Armadillo Antique Store in Des Moines, Iowa that has a long list of Akre names and perhaps Jameson or Jon****son with many birth dates (many in the 1830's) and other notations that I was unable to read because it was in a Scandanavian or German language. I did recognize the name Bergen. The names appears to be the descendents of a man named Lamson (or Samson) Jameson Akre. Some of the names are: Martha, Todden, Sofie, Anna, Susanna, John, Henry, Hans, Nils, Sara or Lara (could also be Lars), Engborg with dates and notes after each. Also, Gjorgne.

I am posting this message in case someone would be interested in having that Bible. I am not the seller, nor connected with it in any way. I just thought it a small gold mine in terms of AKRE genealogy information. It is in both #210 at the Brass Armadillo Mall in Des Moines, Iowa. You will have to contact them directly with any questions you may have. The telephone number is 1-515-282-0082 or 1-800-775-2140. The price on the Bible was $14.95 US$.

I just started Norwegian research on my mom’s maternal side. I have been doing German surname research on my dad’s lines for about 15 years I know quite of few names and dates on mom’s maternal line, but can’t go back very far on mom’s paternal line. We descend from the 5 original Norwegian families who left Lier, Buskerud, Norway in the 1860’s and settled in Leer, Alpena Co., Michigan.
I am missing dates, sibling and I am sure more lines. I wonder if anyone recognizes the names I have listed below. I have also shown farm names. I don’t speak or read Norwegian.

Karen JENTER
Michigan

My great grandmother:
Karen Ottersen
Born 7 Dec 1848 Lier farm name is Kopperud
Died 29 Aug 1933 Leer, Alpena Co, Alpena MI
Married 02 May 1879 Norwegian Lutheran Church, Alpena MI
Spouse Martin Olesen (see his stats below)

Karen’s father:
Otter Olesen
Born 1 Jun 1821 Lier farm name is Kopperud
Died 11 Jan 1894 Alpena, Alpena, Michigan
Otter and his 3 wives had about 12 children

Karen’s mother wife of Otter:
Aderina Olsdt
Born 11 Mar 1819 farm name Svangstand
Died 08 Oct 1913 Leer, Alpena Co. Michigan

Otter Olesen’s father::
Ole Olsen
Born 9 May 1790 farm name Kopperud

Ole Olsen’s father
Ole Christensen
Born 1750 Lier farm name Overn

Ole Christensen’s father:
Kristen Rasmussen
Born not known probably Lier farm name is Gummerud

Here is another one
Ole Hansen born 17 Dec 1789 Lier farm name is Toverud

OK, this is my great grandfather
Martin Olesen
Born 1854 Lier don’t know day or month though, farm name Kopperud
Died 16 Feb 1923 Leer, Alpena Co., Michigan
That’s all the farther I can go back on Martin

Here is another family name
Ole Hansen born 17 Dec 1789 Lier farm name is Toverud

I have more family names and dates if anyone sees any connections
