Pearson - Peersen - or Jacobsen? Family naming practices....?

My great grandfather was Lawrence Pearson. He was born on May 9, 1857 in Norway, and died in Duluth, Minnesota February 16,1943.

(He lived briefly in Wisconsin before moving to Duluth, and married a Grace Benesch about 1898. He was also a fisherman)

I've had no luck trying to figure out where in Norway he was born. The census records were of no help. No towns listed at all. There are also discrepancies in them for the years he immigrated, and naturalization. The only think I think I can say for sure is that he immigrated in the 1880's. So therefore I can't find an immigration record, or naturalization record. (it is also believed that he came to America alone, no other family).

I've been all over that Norway Digital Record site, but am not having any luck.

I sent away for the death certificate, and that was of some help. It verified that his place of birth was Norway, but no other details about that. I did get his birth date, and it also says his father's name was Jacob Pearson.

So here are my questions.
If Lawrence Pearson father's name was Jacob, shouldn't his last name really have been Jacobsen? Wasn't that the naming practice back then?

Would it be more likely that his father would have been Peer Jacobsen?

Also, what would be the most likely way to spell Lawrence in Norweigan?

Don't even get me started on how to spell Pearson (obviously not the Norway spelling), or Jacobsen.

I'm at a dead stop, and looking for advice. Am I at a dead end permanently? Any advice at all.....anyone? If you read this whole thing I thank you! (LOL)

Barbara

Just beginning to search for my family, but have come to a dead end with my Norwegian GGpa. He immigrated in 1870 and I can't find any records.

Any advice on starting a search in Norway? I don't know where he's from except one try at the Norwegian site shows 6 of the same family name in Sor Trondelog. I'm REALLY green when it comes to searching anything over there. It's a bit scary. Not knowing the language, but I guess if I'm going to figure this all out, I'll get better.

thanks for any help. terriermynhier@cox.net

Gulsvik family from Hallingdal: Descended from Sigurd Mund?

Does anyone have any information on the theory that the family who owned the Gulsvik farm in Fla, Hallingdal was directly descended from Sigurd Mund? I have been told that Sigurd Mund's daughter Helge married Hjarande Gunnarsen Hvit. Their son Gunnar was the founder of the Gulsvik family farm in Fla. I can't verify any of this, but I am interested to know if it could be true. I have the entire line, if anyone is interested. Thanks very much.

Kjersti Olsdatter Almaasoyen

My great-great grandmother was Kjersti Olsdatter Almaasoyen. Would this be of the main farm Almaas? She had a child, Martin, out of wedlock between 1891-93 and she and the father were never married. She eventually married in 1896 to Kristoffer Kristoffersen Hugaas and they had three children together, Dordi b. 1896, Karl b. 1897 and Olga Karine b. 1899. On the 1900-telling for the Hugaas farm there is a Kari Olsdatter Almaasøien, age 45. I think Kari may be visiting the Hugaas farm at the time but do not know what relation she is to Kjersti. In 1904, Kristoffer, Kjersti, and the 4 children went to the US and settled in the Toronto, South Dakota area. I've found the family listed on the 1905 South Dakota State Census. Kristoffer died between 1905-1910. On the 1910 US Federal Census she is listed as being widowed and the children are living with her. According to Singsaasboka, (I think it may be in Bind III.) Kristoffer died and Kjersti remarried but it doesn't say when and who she married. I've been trying to anything on her past 1910 without any luck.

Other names that I have found for her are Kirsti Olsdatter Hugaas, Kerste Hugaas, and Christine Christopherson.

Would anyone happen to know anything about this?

Any assistance would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you,

Becky Moore

Aage was born in 1905, and is the brother of my grandfather Egill. D Aug 23, 1922 in Minnesota.

Arrival appears to be in 1862 via New York.
Marriage appears to be in 1876 to Ingrid Alrick.

I am looking for two things…does anyone know where he was born in Norway? Parents are Ole Dahle (probably not that helpful considering a number of males were probably “Ole” in Norway) and Magdoline Jacobson.

I am also looking for where the marriage took place to Ingrid Alrick. I’d imagine it would be in America and possibly Minnesota, considering if happened about 8 years after Helge’s arrival to America.

The Dahles and Alricks appear to have settled in Minnesota…like many others from Norway.

Any information regarding this would be wonderful!!
Thanks in advance!
Paula

Hi, I am looking for information on my Grandfather,
Odd Atslev. During the Nazi Occupation he was married
to my Grandmother Ingerid Holum. They lived in Oslo
with my mom, Torun Atslev. My Grandfather told my mom
that his family was from Atslev in Denmark. But when I
contacted the Slaegt Atslev in Denmark I was told that
he was not listed with them. They told me that Atslev
is not a name but a town. My Grandmother was from
Nittedal. They are both now deceased. My Granfather
spent 3 years of his life during the Occupation in
either Grini or near a Hakadal Camp. Both my Grand-
parents were in their twenties during the war. If it
helps my surname is Skjerpe from Heskestad.

My Grandfather had a sister ( Vesla ) and a brother.

Tusen Takk
Gunn

Chistophersen - Lyngør

I have been trying to discover some background to Fredrikke Wilhelmine Christopherson who came to England in the late 1890s (probably soon after her mother died), trained as a nurse and spent almost the rest of her life caring for military families.

By the beginning of WW1 she had risen to the rank of Matron. During the war she served on the Hospital Ship Goorkha, then in the Egypt Expeditionary Force. After 3 years she contracted dysentery and returned to England.

She was awarded the 1914-15 Star with British War and Victory Medals, was Mentioned in Despatches and received the Royal Red Cross (First Class).

She died in 1930 at the rather early age of 58 and was buried in Dypvåg Cemetery with her mother Louise Amalie (Wiersen), herself dying at the early age of 47.

We know Fredrikke's father was Knud Bjørn Christophersen (a Mercantile Marine Captain), that she had a brother "John" (also in England at the time of her death), and that she had a sister Anna Margrethe who married in turn Marcus Marcussen and Theodor Martini Nielsen.

It seems Knud Bjørn Christophersen was from a long-established line of ships' captains and owners in Lyngør, but this is all we know. He was not buried with his wife and daughter, so was he lost at sea?

We have a local subscription to Ancestry.co.uk but cannot afford the International version, so cannot directly explore Norwegian resources.

If anyone can help to fill in some detail it would be deeply appreciated. We should be very happy in exchange to carry out a little research at this end!

Thank you very much or tusen takk...

Paul White
London
Gerulfsen or Gierulfsen or Gjerulfsen

I am looking for a tie-in between a Norwegian family and a Hans Christian Gierulff in Copenhagen, Denmark. The family name(s) of Gerulfsen or Gierulfsen or Gjerulfsen is concentrated in the Aust-Agder in the 1801 Norwegian census. I have been told by researches looking in Denmark that the family name is very unique so it is likely this is the same family.

Hans Christian Gierulff was in the Danish navy. He married Marthe Jensdatter 13 April 1832 in Copenhagen. Their children were Christiane Marie, Ander(s) and Carl Jorgensen Gjerulff. He may have been born 20 March 1807 in Copenhagen, Denmark to a Hans Casper Gierulf and Inger Catherine Joensdatter. This has not been confirmed as the name on the birth record is either Christian Gierulf or Christian Hansen. Hans Casper Gierulf was also in the Danish navy. Hans Casper and Inger were married 28 June 1805 in Copenhagen. They had another son, Anders Gierulff, born 10 June 1804 in Copenhagen.

Our family knowledge is limited. My great grandfather was Anders or Andre Gerulf, who surfaced in the 1870s in the Portland, Oregon area. It is said he was born in Copenhagen in the 1830s, left Denmark at age 14 due to a family/military conflict and came to the US via England. I have found no records between 1845 and 1870. It is said he changed his last name from Gerulfsen. It is also said that there was a relation to Queen Victoria in England that assisted him in leaving Denmark and travelling to the US as a cabin boy. I personally don't have much faith in this. However, since everything else appears to be fairly accurate I am including it jut in case.

My ancestor, Johan Peter Hansen Nordlie (b. 1846, Elverum, Hedmark), was the son of Olia Johnsdatter (b. ~1824, Elverum, Hedmark) and Hans Engebretsen Nordlie of Hoff (no info except what I have written, which I found on his sons' birth registers). Olia and Hans had 3 illigitimate sons together and never married. Olia married a Herman Arnesen around 1854 and continued to have more children with this man.

Has anyone had a similar experience and know why two people would continue to have illigitimate children without marrying at that time? It has made it impossible to trace Hans Engebretsen's ancestry.

Thanks.

They had at least three children: Anna Jensine Rasmusdatter, born 12 Oct. 1860; Rasmus Mathias Rasmussen, born 13 Nov. 1862 and Antoinette Andersdatter, born 2 Oct. 1865. Later records identify Anders Rasmusen, Anna Jensine and Antoinette in the 1880's in Donna parish (Island of Donna) living in the community of Stassvag (various spelling used).

Any information on ancestry would be appreciated. Any information on Rasmus Mathias or on Antoinette Andersdatter woult be appreciated.

I'm trying to find some ancestors who immigrated to Canada between 1868 and 1873 from Norway.

My GGGrandmother, Caroline Jacobine Nikolaisdatter, married Martin Knudsen on March 15, 1868 in Ålesund, Norway. They had one daughter, Charlotte Elise born December 26, 1868 in Ålesund. Their next child was born in Ontario in 1873. Caroline was married previously, but that husband died. She had two surviving children from that marriage. They are Nikolai (born 1859) and Hanna (born 1862.) Hanna might also be "Manna" but she went by the name Minnie. Sometime within the 5 year window 1868-1873 Caroline, Nikolai and Hanna came to Canada. I know this, because I have their death info. I'm not sure about Charlotte and if she even came over. I know this is confusing, but can anyone help me find their immigration info? It would be greatly appreciated!
--Ronald

Hi, Sven is my great, great grandfather. We know he traveled from Norway to the US in 1866 at 4 years old. I am trying to find information on the journey Sven took from Meraker to the US (ship, port of departure, when he arrived in the US and where). In addition, I am looking for who travelled with him and his parents names. Any information you have would be helpful. Thank you so much for your help.

Susanne Albin

Hans Johnson

My GGrandfather is Hans William Johnson, born on January 3, 1877 in Holmestrand, Vestfold, Norway. This is the info that I have from several different sources, but I can't seem to find a record of this. I have been searching the Digital Archives of Norway online. His last name, according to his bible that I have, might have been Johanson, or spelled similar. He also had the following siblings who were also (supposedly) born in the same area: John Anderson, born 8/21/1871; Marie, born 3/10/1875; Anna, born 3/11/1878. Their parents are Andrew G. Johnson, born 9/17/1843 and Kaisa, born 3/6/1841. Both were born in Sweden, but I'm told they moved to Norway and had their first three children there. Would this account for my not finding the children? I'd love to find record of their births and to know their original last name. Same with any info on the parents, including when the family crossed over to America. I have found quite a bit about them since they arrived, but nothing before that. Can anyone help me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Blekken Farm still there?

We're planning a trip to Norway and we would like to visit the farm that came to be our family's surname. Is there still a farm by that name near Halse, Mor og Romsdal? Any buildings still standing? I don't know much about how old Norwegian farms were organized, with many families living there. When did families begin to take the farm name as their surname? For visiting that area, is it best to fly into Trondheim and do you suggest we rent a car? Where should we look for a place to stay? How difficult would it be to tour around on our own? We would like to visit the town of Halse, the church, and any other sites that would have been there prior to 1868.
The only known relative I have been able to trace who emigrated is John Ole Blacken, b. 11 Oct. 1849 at Halse. Thanks for any help.

Immigration to Norway

In modern day Norway there are immigrants coming to Norway instead of the other way around. Because of liberal immigration policies immigrants have been arriving in Norway in increasingly larger numbers from the late 1970s and onward. Twenty percent of Oslo's population are now immigrants from other races. In a few years time native Norwegians are expected to be a minority in Oslo. In the longer run, if everything keeps on going like today, native Norwegians will eventually be a minority in their own homeland.

How does people of Norwegian ancestry feel about this?
Johan E Anderson 1850-1928

I have very little information about my only Norwegian ancester who came to be known in America (Cambridge MA and Chicago IL) as John E Anderson, my great-grandfather. He was born 11 Nov either 1850 (per the 1900 US census) or 1851 (per his death cert) in Norway. The 1920 census says born in Christiana, his death certificate has an almost undecipherable town name (looks to me like Airling?). He came to America (thru Boston?) in about 1868. He married in Cambridge in 1872 to a Swedish immigrant Lovisa Hellgren. In the Cambridge marriage register, it says his parents were Anders and Inger, and his name was listed as Jens Andersen. He was married by Paster Gust Adolph Pehrsson, but I haven't been able to identy the church. I find the couple and their older children in the 1880 Cambridge census. They move to Chicago in the late 1880's. He was always identified as a roofer/slater/tinsmith. All together, there are 9 children that live to adulthood. We never knew any of our Anderson relatives...it was John's youngest son Charles Marshall Anderson who was my grandfather and he disappeared from my father's life when my dad was a toddler. I have been unable to find any living descendants of the other Anderson children. Daughter Hilda's death certificate says his name was Johan. I wonder if the E could be for Emil, his second son's middle name. The first son was name Louis--which seems to be after his wife. John died in 1928 in Chicago. I would very much like to be able to find a living Anderson relative. I would also like to trace his roots back in Norway. I know this is very limited information to start with, but any help anyone can offer would be appreciated. Pat Anderson Wallace

I would like to find out how to identify a "farm name" for my husband's Norwegian family. His gr-gr-grandparents were Kittil Oleson who married Kari Eriksdatter 22 Oct 1838 in Gol, Buskerud Cty, Norway. Kittil's parents were Ole Oleson and Gunille Kittelsdatter. Kittil and Kari had several children, one of whom was my husband's gr-grandfather Ole Kittilson, born 1842 in Christiana, Hollingdal and who emigrated to Lincoln County, SD when it was Dakota Territory. He married Nekolina (?) in ca. 1870. When Nekolina died in 1880, Kittil and Kari came to the US to assist him with his small children.

I have never been able to locate the farm name in Norway -- nor do I know how to go about identifying a farm name. Can anyone help me in this venture?

Multi-relationships

Greetings. I would like to find out how other people have dealt with multi-relationships within their family trees. I am researching both sides of my family, and have found many multi-relationships in my tree. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type of software to use that would be able to calculate all of the relationships, since I am finding many ancestors who married their cousins? Would like any feedback and or suggestions.
Kipp

STANALAND surname British or Scandinavian? INTERESTED in DNA project?

My husband was born 1944 in Angelina County, Lufkin TX, on a line of STANALANDs that track from the N/East (New Jersey area) and a branch going south through the Southern USA states of North / South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and on to East Texas in the mid to late 1800s. The basic line in East TX is still in Nacogdoches County, which borders Angelina Co TX.

Current family history on the STANALAND name reveals quite a few spelling variations ...including STANLEY in American records. Right now the research leads to Britain in the 1600s, but some of the research leaves me with many questions. And there is precious little ongoing research on the line ...after a couple family research books were published in the past. I think those books are extremely helpful to Americans researching the line ..but there is some family lore / and possible assumptions that suggest we all need to put our heads together and do some more research.

I have put the following on the STANGLAND, STANALAND and STANLEY message boards ...

Is STANALAND a variation of the STANGLAND / STANGELAND surname? or a variety of other surnames such as STANLEY, which is a variation on the STANALAND line.

Re DNA for GENEALGOGICAL purposes has become very common and useful for connecting people who relate genetically. I am involved for genealogy purposes in 3 projects through Family Tree DNA out of Houston, with lab at Univ of Arizona.
See for info: http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com
info@familytreedna.com

My spouse is a STANALAND and I am considering starting a surname Y-dna project (male STANALAND DNA candidates). There are 2 STANLEY projects ..and the STANALAND surname does appear with that spelling, however other spellings are used and possibly many individuals with differently spelled surnames are all the same line genetically.

Surnames being considered: (and others can be included)
Stanaland, Stanland, Staniland, Stanoland, STANGLAND, Stangeland, Stanley, Stanly, and Stenlund, and Stanlan or Stanalan, Stanilan.

I have not yet made up my mind to begin the project. There must be willing male candidates with the above surnames to serve as candidates, and right now I find the interest in researching the line painfully slow and postings on the line to be few and far between.

Is there any interest in learning if the research so far on the line is correct? or wrong and possibly based on some assumptions or family data handed down with a few errors. Is the line British? or does it have origins elsewhere? in Scandinavia for instance?

With a Y-DNA project, each candiate's sponsor (anybody can sponsor a candidate, not necessarily the candidate himself) will be asked to provide a lineage from the candidate back to the oldest known ancestor. This can be provided in a brief paragraph explaining the line ..or be a GEDCOM file created with your chosen family tree software. The Gedcom is shared in a simplified format on the direct line back to oldest known ancestor ...and living individuals info (birth or location) can be 'privatized' or not shown if preferred.

The test itself is simple (I'm involved in 3 projects on McLAIN "Clan MacLEAN", BROCK and PULLIN / PULLEN) ..and consists of mouth swabs used to take simple cheek 'scrapings' that are placed in tiny vials and returned to the lab in the envelope provided.

Tests can be ordered for 12, 25, 37 and 67 markers. The 12 marker test is very basic and will show a large # of matches ...but is a good beginning. The cost right now is $99 for the basic test through Family Tree DNA.
http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com
info@familytreedna.com

To narrow down the matches and find more closely related 'cousins' that can help you discover more about your own lines, I would have to suggest the 25 or 37 marker test, and eventually you would likely want to 'refine' or upgrade to the full 67 markers...with each step up in marker #s costing more ...or you can being right away with a 37 or 67 marker test.

Be aware that researchers sometimes discover non-surname matches ..or that they match with nobody having their surname. These things happen quite often as infants born to one man are raised by other fathers and assume the new surname that is passed along through the generations. So the genealogical DNA does open the doors to new and helpful information, not only by discovering your genetics, but also by connecting you with other people you match genetically who have their own history / research to share.

There are 'female' mitochondrial mtDNA tests available, and my mother is participating in one for me, but so far I find that the mtDNA is less useful as the surname changes each generation...however it is an option when you have a deadend in research and have no other choice or no male candidates.

PLEASE ...let me know if YOU have an interest in participating in a male Y-DNA STANALAND surname (all variations of spelling) project at Family Tree DNA. Post here please ...or email me directly if you wish.

Audrey in TN

Johan Petter Hansen Nordlie (b. 1/23/1846, c. 1860) was the illegitimate child of Hans Engebressen (sp) Nordlie and Olia John*son* (not sure of the end spelling). I am stumped with Johan's parents.

1. Where could the surname of Nordlie come from? It doesn't follow naming patterns.
2. Would Hans and Olia have gotten married? I can't find a marriage record.

Thank you!

I just began researching my husband's family history. I found the digital archives in Norway and am having a hey-day except that now I'm stuck.

I need help deciphering a parish record. My great-great-grandfather in law's name is Johan Petter, towards the top of the page. It looks like his father is Hans Engebre.. Nordlie. That's about all I can figure out. If anyone can decipher the rest of the parents, godparents and last catergory, I would GREATLY appreciate it!

The image link is: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070603300637....

Just FYI, here's the family line if anyone can offer any more help (especially on the women!)!

Harald Nordli, b. April 1882 in Kristiania, (emigrated to Boston in 1902), son of Johan Nordlie, b. 1846 and Thea, b. 1846

Johan had a previous wife, Christine, and two children, Johanne Wilhelmine and Ferdinand.

I am attempting to trace my great-great grandfather. His name was Ole Olsen. He married Antoinette Pedersdatter on 12 Dec 1875 at Ettrick, Trempealeau County, WI, USA.
Age at wedding was 24. Wife was 17.

Birthplace of Groom was Kosernoug / Kosernaug
Birthplace of Bride was Ringsaker

Grooms parents were Ole Olsen and Margit Bjornsdr
Brides parents were Peder Johannesen and Olive Ausendr

He was a farmer by trade.

Of this marriage there were three sons: Martin, Oscar, and Julius. 2 of the 3 sons attempted to change the name to the Norwegian "Haugen", but the clerk being of Irish decent spelled it "Hogan" thus my spelling of Hogan.

The marriage record of Julius, Death Certificate of Oscar and Martin all indicated fathers name as Ole Hogan.

I have no leads as to where Kosernoug is, and no history of Ole Olsen of whom I am trying to find. I do know that Antoinette remarried sometime after 1884 to an Olai Moe, but I cannot find death record of an Ole Olsen.

Please email me with any type of response at rchogan42@yahoo.com.

Many thanks.
Does Breive mean anything to you?

Hi - and thanks in advance for looking.

My last name is Breivis via Lithuania. Its root is Breive according to family records, sometimes with a little dot over the last 'e'. Via Google, it doesn't look to have any meaning in Lithuania. Phonebooks show a small few there, but not anything like what shows up in Norway, Scotland as well. In Gaelic, a Breive would seem to have been a village judge of sorts. It’s also a sept of the surname Morrison – pointing me to old Norse. Is this making any sense or am I off on some tangent? Got anything to add?

My Thanks,

Adam
Looking for relatives of Olga Rood - Frederickshald, Norway

Olga Rood was the daughter of Jens and Bollette Rood. She was born on August 5, 1879, in Frederickshald, Norway. She married Olaf Magnus at her native home in 1905. In 1906 he came to America, and she followed in 1907. They lived in Chicago, IL, USA until 1921 when they moved to Lisbon, WI. Olga Rood Magnus died on Feb. 14, 1927, from pneumonia. She was survived by her husband, Olaf Magnus, a son Severre, and 3 daughters: Jennie, Margit, and Solveig. She was also survived by her mother Bollette Rood, four sisters and four brothers.

My husband is the son of Olga's daughter Margit. Margit (Margaret) passed away on May 11, 2007. Margit has one surviving sister, Solveig.

The family would love to find the missing Norwegian relatives if at all possible.

If anyone can help us find Olga Rood's family or her husband's family (Olaf Magnus)(whose family we know nothing about), please contact me with any and all information that might help us find the families.

Any help whatsoever, would be greatly appreciated.

Ginny DeLong
email address: rdelongs@twcny.rr.com

KENESVORGE? ( place in Norway?)

Trying to decipher a town(?) that my grandmother had written in an index card with regards to family coming from Norway or Sweden.

I think it reads KENESVORGE. I've checked a few placed, and have not been able to find a place name similar to this.

It pertains to my 3G Grandfather Hans VINGE ( became Henry Winger once in the USA) . In 1870, he was listed as a Pianomaker in the New York, NY census. He emigrated from Norway/Sweden around 1864-67, as one child was born in 1863 in Norway and another child was born in 1867 in New York.

If I could find this town he may have come from, I can begin my research in the "old country". Thanks!

Knaibakken

I'm looking for information on Kristoffer Knaibakken and his wife, Johanne Olsdatter. I know he was born in 1791 and she in 1789. They had one daughter, Marta Knaibakken, born in 1817 on the Knain Farm, Hurdal, Norway. She married 3 times, to Hans Grue, Haaken Larsen, and Johannes Melby. I need her (Marta Knaibakken) date of death. It might have been in 1882. Also need her parents' dates of death and marriage. If anyone knows anything, or has any information on them, don't hesitate to reply!
-Jack

Olaf Nilsson Nyberg

I am trying to find out what happened to this family. I am hoping that
there is someone who may have info about this area of Norway.

This is the Information that I do have:

I found Olof Nilsson Nyberg, (born November 30, 1839 in Sweden), on the 1900 Norway census living in Kristiana with his wife Kaysa and their daughter Marie Oline.

I was not able to find him on the earlier census.

They lived in Sagen Parish in 1869 and Trefoldighet parish in 1883.
I do know that they were still there in 1905.

I found a son born on August 7, 1866 in Asker. His name is Johan.
(I think the children's last name was listed as Ols.)

Johan is NOT listed living with them on the census and I can not find him anywhere else on this census.

Is there is a Bygdebok or some other form of information for Asker, (or any other area that they may have lived).

I have searched the Digitalarkivet and found the birth of both of the children and the marriage of Olaf & his wife Kaysa. I tried searching Ellis Island for emigration records.
(If I were sure what their last name was, it would help a lot).

I am interested in finding out if there were any other children, and what may have happened to the family. I have looked for death records for each of them, but could not find them.

It would be a great to find the marriage record to both of the children. I have looked on Digitalarkivet, but I am so limited by the language.

Most of my reseach is in Sweden, and I am not familiar with Norweigen
reseach, so any informtion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.
Gayle Nyberg
Minneapolis, MN
