Westbergs of Gotland, Sweden

I have traced my husband's family to Gotland, SWE. His Gr-Gr-Grandfather Jacob Westberg jumped ship in NY after sailing from Stockholm in 1848. I have traced him to his family in Gotland, and a father named Johannes Westberg and a mother named Cajsa Jacobsdotter. Westberg does not follow the -sson/-dotter naming format of the other branches of that family, and I haven't found any records of Johannes' ancestors. Is it possible he came from elswhere? In the U.S., all family records that were not civil records were associated with Protestant churches. My husband took the Paternal DNA test and it came back J2.

Any hints on how we may trace this family back further?

My g-grandfather was born in Sweden in August 1870 (according to a the 1900 US census in Lead City, Lawrence, South Dakota). I can find records of his coming to the US on the Republic on May 30, 1887 as August Östenberg.

I do not have access to the Swedish Emmigration Records, but from the general search, he is listed as coming from Kalmar, Sweden.

He is listed with an Ida Math Östenberg (born about 1868). I do not know their relationship, but do not see her on any US census records after this.

August Ostenberg went on to marry my g-grandmother Anna Felt in Lead, South Dakota in 1899. Later (sometime before 1910) and and my g-grandmother divorced and we really don't know much about him.

I would love to find out where August (and Ida, not sure who she is??) came from in Sweden and trace my roots.

Thank you!

Question about surnames

Is it possible for a person to have a last name that doesn't follow their father's first name? I have an ancestor named Petter Olsson from Sillerud, Varmland. He was born 1806--several records show this. There is only one Petter that I can find born in this parish in this year: 10/18/1806, however his father's name is Amund. I would think his name would then be Petter Amundsson. I have spent alot of time checking this out and it seems I have the right person in every way, except for the last name. Could a person change their name, or just decide to have a different name?

Believed Agneta Mahrbeck died on the 25th March 1817 in Klinte.

- Possible brother 2 - Petter Pauel Mahrbeck married Abigael Larsdotter in Klinte in 1761, he died the 24th October 1778 in Klinte. Abigael died on the 27th March 1773 in Klinte, lists her husband on slaktdata as Petter Pavelsson Marbeck.

- Possible brother 3 - Jöran Mahrbeck married to Maria Elisabeth Heidenberg, and had the following children; Olof Mahrbeck born 14th November 1766 in Klinte, unknown child born 13th August 1772 in Klinte, Margreta Charlotta Mahrbeck born 2nd June 1780 in Klinte and Jöran Fredrich Mårbeck born the 7th March 1783. It is believed Maria Mahrbeck, died on the 25th October 1831 in Klinte.

If anyone is able to have a look for me and see whether Christian, Petter and Jöran show up on any household examination rolls I'd be most appreciative.

I believe that Christian, Detlof's, Petter and Jörans father was Pafvel Mahrbeck, a lotsen, died 1773.

Any assistance is very much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Anthony

I have a gg Grandfater named Per August Persson Liten who was born in Misterhult, Karlmar, Sweden but I can find very little if any information regarding the sirname Liten. (and yes the records I have indicate only one "T" rather than two, I have found information on the Litten name)

To make matters more difficult, I have his mother's name Nilsdotter, but no father listed on the birth record so current status is as a bastard.

Can anyone offer more information on the name Liten or maybe direct me to a resource that might offer some direction in researching this name?

I have wondered that maybe the title "Liten" might indicate a suffix such as "Jr." since the sedish - english dictionary indicates "liten" to mean "small" in english.

Thank you in advance for any information or help provided.

jp

Lindenberg

I have always been puzzled about Mary/Marie Lindenberg and her brother Carl. Both have stated on all available census that they were born in Sweden. The only Mary/Marie & Carl Lindendenberg I could find had been born in Germany and the birth years matched. Quite by accident today, I found their sister Jennie that lived with Mary/Marie in 1900 census coming into the US. Surprise Surprise, she was going to her sisters at address I have in Chicago IL. So I know I have the right Jennie. Born in SWEDEN!!! Copenhagen to be exact. Now can you help me to locate the correct Mary/Marie & Carl Lindenberg born in Sweden, Probally Copenhagen?. Mary was born in Mar 1850. This I know from her census. Carl was a couiple of years younger. Tell me what to do. Thank you so much.

Best Regards
Maye B

Here's tricky one for someone out there who is a pro at this!!:) -- This is a cross-post, as I really have no idea on it.

Here's a tough one for us. So many of my grandparents were named John Johnson. This particular man was my gg grandfather. He was born in 1854 in Sweden. He eventually settled in Barron County, WI, where he married Matilda Nevin 20 May 1890. She was from Ireland, the daughter of (we believe) Robert Nevin & Martha Stuart.

John & Matilda had three or four children together (the fourth appears to come after he had died, so not sure on paternity). The kids were Hannah (1891-1897), Joseph (1893-?) Albert Anthony (1895-1985), and Ervin coming along later (1900-?).

John died abt 1897 in Barron County, WI at the age of 43. Matilda went on to marry a man by the name of Carl Germanson, with whom she had three more children.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I know this one may be a long shot!!

He was born Nov 30, 1868 in Ease (Ahtava) Finland and died Jul 10, 1942 in Gonvick Mn. His parents were Johan Jacobsson 1843-1896 in Vaasa, Finland; Ann Greta Andersdotter 1840-1898 in Vaasa, Finland. I believe Ann Greta was previously married to Johan Johansson 1831-1896 in Vaasa, Finland. Andrew married Maria Monsen 1875 (Denmark)-1967 (Ada, Mn). I am completely stuck and would appreciate any info anyone may have. saras28@comcast.net

I am wondering from where Johanna came back to Fållon on 7/2/1887 and what the remarks say about her. I can pick out that she left the Church and became a Baptist but can't figure out the rest of the remarks. It also appears that she left for ?? on 7/2/1887 which incidently is the date of her marriage to Gustaf Ekström in Fållon. The dates have me very confused so I must be reading something wrong. Thank you in advance, Marigene

Gustaf (born April 21, 1861 somewhere in Sweden) and Christine Carlson (unknown dates)came to the United States in the late 1800's or very early 1900's with their two sons. Carl Ernest August Carlson was born March 9, 1888, in Holmskag, Vesrom, Saken, Sweden (husband's grandfather). Guy Gusmar Carlson was born April 24, 1890, same place. I think that they may have married sisters, Esther Karen Sather (to Carl) and Miriam Helen Sather (to Guy).

I have no idea where in Sweden these places are located, no matter what map I use. If there are any of Guy's relatives out there, I have an old picture of the two boys together, and one of the young sisters I would be happy to email to you. If anyone can help me locate the Swedish places, or tell me who to contact to trace the family back further, I owuld be very grateful. Thank you.

Mathilda Lindquist came in 1884 from Torsås, Kalmar Län, via Malmo to Alexandria MN. with brother Carl Enoch and probably Charley Bergquist. She married Henry Bergquist and lived in St. Paul MN. She died early 1900's. Sons Edgar and Alvin. Edgar lived in WA until death.
John Gustav Lindquist, blacksmith from Torsås came earlier. He can't be found here, but returned to Sweden to die Nov 1897.
Carl Enoch may have married and separated or divorced before his death in 1917.
I would like any information on Mathilda, Carl Enoch's wife, and the whereabouts of John Lindquist in America.

I live in the United States and have Swedish roots. The biggest problem I have come across in my research is trying to find people or texts that could help me find/obtain records from Sweden. I normally get a grimace from people when I tell my nationality, so I come here for help.

I have a great-grandfather, Wilfrid/Wilfred J. Berg (also said to be Joel Wilfred Berg or Julius Wilfred Berg), who was born on April 15, 1887 in Helsingburg, Sweden to Andrew/Anders Carlsson Berg and Mary/Maria Andersson. He's buried in New York State, USA with his parents and siblings in Vermont, USA. I have their birth and death dates.

With the information I have, where would I go to obtain their vitals records?

My email is - Adkdork@yahoo.com
Thank you and Happy Holidays!

I am new at using Genline and and was wondering if there is an easier way to look through the parish documents for specific ancestors by name instead of looking at each of the pages. This is especially hard when looking for household examinations and death dates if you do not know when the death occurred. Any advise would be appreciated!

Greetings!

I've got some family treasures to share. It's an old photo album from my great grandmother's shoebox, which is now posted online:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/28551141@N02/sets/7215760967634...

There are some great photos that I'd like to post on my family tree. The trick is figuring out who's who! A few of the photos have messages on the backside - which is where I need help. Hopefully a clue or two exists on who's wedding, daughter or grandmother is being photographed.

There are Langs and Nilssons and I'm sure many others here that I'm not aware of. For those of you familiar with my family, I'm guessing that many of these are Thora's sisters and brothers and their respective husbands, wives and children - who I'm eager to identify!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me sift through these wonderful clues!!

Med Vänliga hälsningar!
Paul Blake

Greetings,

I am researching my great-grandfather Edward Nelson born abt. 1883 to Christina in Wedborn (Vedborm) Sweden. He also had a brother Gus and a sister Augustus. Edward emigrated to NY April 1902. He married Thyra Long (Lång) also from Sweden, born abt 1889 and migrated abt 1906.

This Canadian border crossing document seems to have the most information about Edward and his mother. I would appreciate any sort of help or guidance on making this jump from the US to Sweden. It was stated as being in Bollnas but it is not in the church book at that place.
Anyway, August per the household rolls lived in Sunne, Varmland then to Lit, Jamtland in 1869, then to Selanger in 1872 and then to America from there. He changed his surname to Bloom. Possibly he was born in Varmland although family records say "Norland".
If it is possible to do would one of you who has access to Swedish records search his birth date without the parish? I don't know if that can be done. The date is correct as my grandmother's notes and internet data confirm that.
Possible parents surnames are Lundblom, Berggren, Blom or Bloom.
This is a bit of a jumble but I am posting all that may lead to an answer to August's birthplace and parents.
Hope I didn't upset any of you with my unprofessional ways.
Thanks, Sharon Sue Harris Marvin
I do not know if he immigrated or not.
I'm hoping to find evidence that he may have been a twin brother to my grt grandfather August Lundblom.

Thank you for any help sent.

Sharon Sue Harris Marvin

Looking for info on my GGrandmother. Here is what I know about her:

She is from Sweden and came to America in about 1900. Her name before she got married was Anna U. E. Melin. I have found other spellings for this name, such as Mellin and Mellen, however. I have no idea what the middle initials stand for. She was born 3/20/1881. Family members tell me she came over to New York by herself and that she came from a somewhat wealthy family. Several family members have told me she came from "royalty." I'm not sure I believe this, though. On her death certificate is listed a Gustaf Mellin as her father. Her mother's maiden name was Rosenquist. If anyone has any info please contact me. Thank you.

Hi,

Would anyone be able to assist me with household examination rolls regarding Anna Christensdotter (born 22 February 1772, Eskelhem)?

I have two household examination roll genline identification numbers;

-no. 2545.13.53500
-no. 2545.14.82900

Both are from Eskelhem, Gotland.

One examination roll covers the years 1785-1808, while the other covers the years 1801-1827.

Are there any other subsequent household examination rolls after 1827 that have a record of Anna Christensdotter (born 22 Feb 1772) in Eskelhem?

I also believe I have found her death on slaktdata, listing her title as a widow. Anna died 12th November 1846, in Eskelhem, Gotland.

However, I'm not 100% sure that is her death, unless I can find her in examination rolls after 1827.

Could anyone with genline help me at all?

Any assistance is most appreciated,

Kind regards,

Anthony

Tracing Military Ancestor - Bohus dragonregemente

Johan Benedikt Alsing, born 1691 in Bohuslän, son of Sten Alsing ("kaptenlöjtnant" at Bohusläns kavalleriregemente, d.1712,Gadebusch)
Johan Benedkit Alsing, was "löjtnant" in 1742 of the Bohus dragonregemente. He was dismissed in 1748. He died in 1763. According to Adam Lewenhaupt's "Karl XII's Officere", Johan Benedikt Alsing was married and had children.

I have tried to locate household examination rolls for his family, but I don't have a clear idea of where he would have lived throughout his military career, except for the brief time he lived in Hålta. I do know that two of his children were born in Hålta, in 1745 & 1746. I'd really like to find a probate record for Johan Benedikt, but don't think the records exist. I am trying to establish a connection between Johan Benedikt and Sten Carl Alsing b. 28 Jan 1744. d.22 Nov 1808, Naverstad. His marriage record (g. m.Anna Märta Dahlman in 1776 in Nössemark, Älvsborg) and death record do not indicate his place of birth.
Can anyone suggest where I might look to find more about Johan Alsing? Or where I might be able to find out Sten Carl's parentage?

My grandfather was Oscar Emil Anderson born on March 19, 1871 in Smaland, Sweden. They both immigrated to America but I don't know the years. I have their grandparents etc traced back to 1795 thanks to my cousin? Audry? I want to know more details about their siblings, if any and when they came to American and what port they came through plus if there is anyone still living in Sweden that I am related to. judy anderson smith

My great grandfather shows up in the 1880 Census under the name of Garby. I was able to get his death information form the RI Archives. It shows his parents as Exon & Erica. He birthplace shows up as Sweden, and he was a Sea Captain. He was buried in St Patrick's cemetery in East Greenwich, RI.
That is all the information I have been able to get.

I don't know where to start to look for info about his immigration. I presume his parent did not come over. I would appreciate any pointers. There is a Latter-day Saints Center near me. I went there a few months ago, but the person on duty wasn't able to help me.
His family lived at Baggås at GID 857.41.15600. In 1845 they moved away somewhere. I can not read Swedish and could use some help deciphering the note at the far right margin.
