Am looking for any information or assistance to locate sources of information on the surname Bautz. My great grandfather, Joseph Bautz, was born in the Alsace region in 1849. he immigrated to the US (NYC) in 1872, aboard the ship Helvetia. He married about 1881, and died of pneumonia in 1894. He was catholic.

Any assiatnce would be GREATLY appreciated.

Tom, any replies? I too am searching the Bautz surname. I know my grandfather Johann b. 23 sept 1889 emigrated from to the US from Romania in 1909. He was of German descent and his parents or gparents emigrated to Austria-Hungary at some point. Family story has it that they were from Alsace originally. any of your fam emigrate to this area. I found two brothers, Conrad and Peter, who listed residence as Kowatschi (German name for now Covaci, romania.
He and Peter and a sister Maria first settled in Philadephia, Pa. He married Lena Mayer and they eventually moved to Mansfield Ohio. Peter died in Philly several years after arrival and Maria married Peter Ott and moved to Troy, Michigan.

HIs mother's maiden name was Kirschner sp?

I'm not aware of an Anton Bautz, but that really doesn't mean much. Joseph Bautz (my ggrandfather), acording to his death certificate in 1894, was born in Germany to Joseph and Catherin Bautz. US census listings of his children, all indicate that he was born in France or Alsace Lorrain (depending upon the census year). He was a cook. HE apparently immigrated from France in 1872, from Havre. The ship was listed as the "Helvetica".

New response to an old message:

I recently made contact with a 4th cousin in Alsace, who provided a connection to a whole bunch of new (to me) material.

My Ggrandfather Joseph Bautz had a 1st cousin named Antoine Bautz, born 1855, I believe in the Alsace region. Antoine was the son of Francois Antoine Bautz and Marie Anne Rett. He had brothers named: Henry and Joseph. I also have one other Antoine in my data base: A Brother to the previously mentioned Antoine who lived only 1948-1850.

I will be happy to give you whatever information would be of help.
