Hi, I'm trying to locate what village etc in Alsace Lorraine, my ancestor Andreas Buettel born abt 1838 emigrated from in abt 1860,61. He settled in QLD Australia. His father Christopher & his family remained, but in 1880 his niece, Susannah Barbara Buttel emmigrated to join his family. I wonder if someone could have a look for me at the Alsace Immigration Book. Essentially I'm wanting to find his village, where by occupation he was a cordonnier, & to research the family line backwards from there. I've had virtually no luck with immigration records in Australia, or the Hamburg port etc.
Would grateful of any information. L.S.

Hi,

there is neither a Buettel nor a Buttel surname in Alsace
Emigration Book (in both vol. 1 and 2).

You can check the popularity of a surname here (birth count
between 1891 and 1915) :

http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?perio...
BUETTEL : no result

http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?perio...
BUTTEL : no result in Alsace-Lorraine, but in "France de
l'intérieur" (all departments except number 67 and 68, i.e.
Alsace)

Only Beutel gives a lot of results in Alsace Lorraine.

Bas Rhin (67) : 22 births in (sorted) Soultz les Bains (+),
Molsheim, Haguenau, Niederbronn les Bains, Strasbourg (-)
Moselle (57) : 2 births in Montigny les Metz
Haut Rhin (68) : 1 birth in Neuf Brisach

charles.

Hi, thankyou for this info. Iam a bit surprised that this name can't be found in the spelling of Buettel. From what I understand, this was common just over the border in Baden, Germany. Buettel, Buttel with the dots above the u(forget what thats called?) or Bittel, seemed to refer to a "Messenger, Court Official etc", whereas I believe Beutel or Beutler refers to a "Maker of leather purses or pouches". So there a fine line in the Eytomology of the name & spelling. I have not eliminated this possibility, because it would be easy for someone who made leather purses to pass this on, & for a person up the track to diversify in to making shoes. An interesting thought. Any way thankyou for this info!

Hi ,

i checked again for Bittel. There is no Bittel in this
books.

i checked also in Baden Emigration Book.
No Bittel, no Buettel, no Buttel, no Büttel.

Buettel and Büttel are equivalent
(ü = u with 2 dot = u umlaut = ue).

In Baden Em. Book, 3 Bidel (Karlsruhe + 2 times Graben),
and again a lot of Beutel (5 all from Karlsruhe). They
should be however the same family.

regards,
Charles.

My Mother, Andreas Buettel's great grand daughter always said he was French Canadian. I don't know if this helps.

Hi,
I don't know about the French-Canadian aspect, but Mr N Buettel's book always gave me the impression that Andreas & his folk were from Alsace Lorraine, certainly much further back they may have roots there, & Andreas may have done part of his military service there. But recent research aided by a german genealogist has found that Andreas & his parents were in Urphar, Wertheim. He made application to emigrate from there. There could be a relationship to another Buettel family who emigrated about mid 1700's to Pensilvania, I think, but have to wait a see what else he finds. I have never found Andreas on the the LDS Hamburg listings, but Margaretha Seubert 26 who was seated next to 18 yo Burkhard Buettel, it's little bit strange. Don't know what happened to him. Leave there for now. LS

Hi again,
That's the newspaper that has the La Rochelle with Margareth Seubert & Burkhard Buettel aboad. They were seated together. I've seen from the Australian Archives about alien registrations document for Andreas just before the 1st world war. This document says 1859 he entered into the Commonwealth & he was of german background, born 1837. They were suspicious about germans then as well as ww2. Margareth came from Wenkheim some distance SE of Wertheim, & her & parents can be found on the IGI, interesting that I haven't been able to find Andreas' immediate family on the IGI though. There are immigration documents asking for release from the state for Margareth & the Burkhard Buettel. I did get Andreas', these were not cheap about 40 euros. The little church Wehrkirche of Urphar is where Andreas & his folk would have attended I believe. If you type it into Google images you'll find a nice selection of pictures. Cheers
