My great-great grandfather was Sebastian Steltzlen from Alsace-Lorraine, France. He was born Sept 1842. During the war Alsace-Lorraine changed hands many times between the French and German's. Sebastian came to America in 1873. He married Hannah ?. (It's possible her maiden name was Whitney). Their eldest son was William "Willie" Whitney Steltlen. They also had Manley Sebastian Steltzlen,
Lizze M Steltzlen and Maud Mae Steltzlen. My great grandmother was Maud Mae Steltzlen-Fuller.
Sebastian and his family lived in Nebraska, and Arkansas. I have a photo of his family in Nebraska, standing in a field with their sod house in the background. (My great-great grandmother was also born in Nebraska on 11 Aug 1883)

Dear Cindy Sowell, So glad to hear from you. What on earth are you doing up at 8:12 am on a holiday, "doing" genealogy?
Yes, Sebastian came to America from France. I believe his parents were born German, however, they could have been living in the same house and be born German, then their son, Sebastian, could have been born in that same house and be born French. His papers from his passage state he was French and he boarded the ship from LaHave, France to come to America.

My former husband, Gerald William Steltzlen, Jr. is the son of Gerald William Steltzlen, the son of William Whitney Steltzlen, the son of Sebastian Steltzlen. We have a son, Gerald William Steltzlen III and he has a son, Gerald William Steltzlen IV. That's 6 generations. Gerald William Steltzlen is 14 years old at this time.

The Fuller and Steltzlen families were neighbors in Nebraska, I think. Manley Fuller married Maude Mae Steltzlen and William Whitney Steltzlen, Maude's brother married Mildred Fuller, the sister to Manley Fuller. A third Fuller sibling, Vina Fuller, married _____ Clark and lived in Tulsa, OK. Willie and Mildred Steltzlen settled in Louisiana and had Gerald William Steltzlen and Arthur Steltzlen. Mildred died when the boys were about 2 and 4 years of age. Arthur was raised by the Sabin family (his maternal aunt and her husband) and took their last name.
Ultimately the Sabins went to Calif. Mildred's parents took Gerald William Steltzlen and raised him in Leslie, Arkansas. I have lots and lots of "stuff" about the Steltzlen family, the Fuller family and even quite a bit about the descendants of the other children of Sebastian and Hannah Elizabeth Steltzlen.

I am looking for Sebastian's birth certificate which names his exact birth place and the names of his parents. I know one person who has this, but she said she had to pay for that information and she was not willing to share it with me. She is dead now, so I guess that is lost until we find out who her heirs were and who has the stacks of genealogical papers that I know she had.

Send me an e-mail address and/or regular address and/or telephone number and I will be happy to communicate with you about the Steltzlen family. My former husband and I are on quite good terms and he helps me as much as he can, when he knows or can remember incidents of family history.

You can reach me at : jgcmw@aol.com and at 918-495-1881. However, I still have to do my income tax and it is due this week, so I won't be able to communicate with you until next week. Sincerely, Janelle H. Steltzlen

Sebastian Steltzlen married Hannah Elizabeth Whitney, a cousin of Eli Whitney, the cotton gin inventor.

Their children were as your stated in your answer to inquiry.

Hello Cousin!
I've been checking my email everyday, hoping I get a note from you! LOL! I am so looking forward to talking with you! Do you remember the name of the lady that had Sebastian's birth certificate? Was she one of Sebastian's daughters? I have looked everywhere for information about Sebastian! LOL! I'm beginning to think Sebastian must have been his middle name! LOL! Take care cousin! Cindy
