I am looking to see if there is a newspaper available somewhere for Sept 1930 (sorry i dont have an exact date), but my great grandfather was in a car accident that month in Carcassonne and died. I would think that it would be posted in the paper, he was originally from Vienna not sure if that matters.

Good Morning!
You might well take a look at the southwestern areas of France, notably from the departments located from the Spanish border all the way to Vendée. The name Juzan is found in Saint Jean de Luz, Bidart,Arcangues (Department des Pyrenees Atlantique (Pau), Landes (Mont-de-Marsan), Gironde
(Bordeaux), in Vendée and even here in Gers.
According to our books, the name JUZAN, or JZON may mean "a house located below."
The surname "LACLAUSTRA" is found in Oloron-Sainte-Marie and in nearby Orthez, France. According to our sources, this is the only incident of its existence in France, HOWEVER, you should be aware that deformation of said surname is likely.

Please note that the name LACLAUTRE or LACLAUSTRE is found in France in Dordogne (aslo located in this area of southwest France).
The name "LACLAUTRE" means cloister. It comes from Occitane language, the word being LACLAUSTRA and means a person employed in a convent or someone who handled wine and convent matters.
Coleman Belmont was born in France and married Ventianna Calderon from Spain. They had at least 2 sons: Harry (my grandfather) born Dec 1868 Pau, France and Max born 11 March 1871 Vienna. Coleman and Vientanna died when boys were young leaving them to live separately with other family members. Would like to know how I find birth certificates for Coleman and Harry and marriage certificate for Coleman and Vientanna. Belmont's have been hard to trace; if anyone has any information on this family I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Surname "Bouett"—possibly from Mont de Marsan

My immigrant ancestor was Jean Baptiste Bouett, who was in California by the 1830s. I have an unconfirmed reference to Mont de Marsan as his place of origin. Bancroft says (Pioneer Register), "Bouet (Jean), 1848, French trader at Los Ang[eles] age 30. Doubtful record.", but I have found him in the 1850 and 1860 US census records for Los Angeles, so Bancroft's source is probably accurate. He married 16 November 1847 in the Plaza Church in Los Angeles, by which time his name had taken the Spanish form 'Juan Bautista'.

Any information on this surname in the area of Mont de Marsan area—or any other information, for that matter—will be greatly appreciated.

Lawrence Bouett (lbouett@yahoo.com)

de Caumont de la Force

Greetings from the USA. My family name is LeForce & we've managed to trace our way back to Dr. Renald Rene La Force I...aka: Rene Massoneau & Rene Massoneau La Force...b about 1680 who ended up in Virginia.

According to our records Renald was born @ Castlenauth: http://www.castelnaud.com/uk/index.php?rub=historique in Guyenne France which was a Caumont property. Both Castlenauth & Caumont were in Guyenne France which I'm told is now Aquitaine.

We know Caumont's got La Force when François de Caumont, Seigneur de Castlenauth, married Philippine de Beaupoil, who was a direct descendant of the Prévôts. We also know François & his older son were killed in the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. But his younger son survived & became the first duc de la Force & a Marshal & Par of France.

We just need to know who Renald Rene La Force I's parents were & our link into the de Caumont de Castlenauth de la Force family. Our family was told parish registers could hold the info. Are they online? If not is there anybody there who's local & can access the info?

Thanks for any info/help. :)

Dawn LeForce @ dmleforce at gmail dot com.

Re: Lapeyre Family in Ascain?

JP,

I didn't know I had a cousin in San Diego!

I went to Ascain 2 years ago while I was in France visiting my husband's family (I married a French). It was a fascinating Basque town with a church in the center where men sat segregated in the rafters to look down on the women praying. It's a nautical town even though it isn't directly on the coast. They were celebrating the tuna festival while I was there.

I scoured the cemetaries out of curiosity since my ancestor is also Jean Martial Lapeyre and couldn't find a single Lapeyre among the tombstones. I wasn't expecting to to find JM there since my family's documents say that he died and was buried in Pau... But no trace of a Lapeyre family there; at least from the ancient tombstones.

Some details about JM's life lead me to believe that his family was not exactly Basque. Since he was employed as a secretary to a wealthy British man for many years before retiring to New Orleans suggests that he was very well educated and came from high social standing given the time he was born in France. The British man had many financial interests in the Caribbean (possibly sugar, rum, or slaves) and JM's linguistic skills were valuable given the mix of French, Portuguese, Spanish, and English that was spoken in all the ports of call.

What I know of JM is that he served the British man until he was in his forties (giving more than 20 years of service). He retired in New Orleans, a city he was enamored with, and married the teenage Angeline Avegno. She was from an aristocratic family and they had many, many children.

The Lapeyre name is common in France, especially in a broad swath of the southwest and central regions. Peyre is Basque for pierre (meaning "peter" or "stone"). It's a pronunciation/spelling that's pretty ancient so I don't think it's a devolution of "pierre" to "peyre"... just an alternative that arose the same time as "pierre". Lapierre did not necessarily become Lapeyre, in other words. Lapeyre may have always existed as Lapeyre.

As far as Martial goes, it's a name that's common to the southeast of the Limousin region. St. Martial is the patron saint of this region, which gives more evidence to my inkling that JM's family wasn't originally from Ascain. I'm very curious about Jean Martial's family. If you find any info, let me know.

Good luck.

Angele

I am looking for anyone with information about the family of Manuel and Plazida Laclaustra. They were originally from Spain and lived in Oloron Sainte Marie, France before imigrating to America in 1903. They had 8 children that immigrated with them: Emilia, Antonio, Leanore, Manuel, Gnarnation, Seraphin, Emile, and Henri. Manuel moved back to france in the early 1920's after Plazida died and returned to America in 1927. Immigration records at this time indicate that he had been living with sons in Bizanos, France. It looks like one of them could have been named Manager. I would love to find information on these sons, or find someone with knowledge of the family in France. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Brian,

I think the part that I find so interesting is that even among the descendants of M-J Deguire dite Larose who claim membership in a number of tribes and Metis groups there is no questioning as to her ancestry...

I came to question it because my boss, who is a descendant through the Bethune line (don't we admins get great assignments!) said that some of his family claimed she was Native while others swore she was Swiss, as her husband was. Her grandfather's second and third wives were both Metis and I suspect that this may be where the story began, and then it bacame advantageous to her fur trader husband to be able to claim that his wife was also Metis when dealing with Native fur traders. Added to that the fact that two of his daughters contracted "country marriages", unacceptable for "white" women but normal for Metis women.

I will have to go in searh of that book. Thanks for the direction.

Best regards, Lili

Lili,

Based on my very quick look at some records and text, I found some references to Metis daughters of J-B Deguire dit Larose. I sense that records are scarce and there is a lot of hopeful inference in many of the family trees that have been developed and published.

So, there may be some mixing of relatives: but for your future examination, there is Belting's book on Kaskasia Under the French Regime which lists J-B Deguire dit Larose's two metis daughters who were born of a nameless Indian slave owned by Joseph Buchet, a notary. The given name of one of the daughters was Marie-Josephe. I also suspect these names are common to our French ancestors. Nevertheless, it is interesting to note that the Illinois/Missouri branch continues some of the French "traditions" as they persisted into the early 19th century. (My own experience with my great-grand-mother was that she spoke a strange French until her death in the 1950's.)

Carl Ekberg also mentions the daughters in his "Colonial Ste. Genevieve." They also play a role in Ekberg's "Stealing Indian Women." So, they are documented. These two Metis children go on to outlive their husbands and acquire wealth, to later foster successful branches of other named families in Missouri.

It was startling for me to discover the number of Amer-Indian ancestors in my lineage. While I suspected it, no-one talked overtly about it until recently.

In summary, it is possible that the name similarity has created some cross-misunderstanding in the family trees. I suspect that is common in family tree research. I am still trying to unravel parts of J-B's life, since Jean-Baptiste is/was such a favored name. There was more than one of them. Even if my theory is wrong, the similarity is striking!

I will keep my eyes and ears open for you. We all encounter some interesting info along the way.

Brian O'Leary

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your information. This is a very long-tailed family! My interest is in the daughters of Marie-Josephe Deguire dite Larose and Jean-Etienne Wadden (most common spelling)and their descendants because of their involvement in the Fur Trade (XY Company, North West Company, Hudson Bay Company, Pacific Fur Company), the opening of the Oregon Territories and the development of the Metis communities in Canada - their influence is enormous. In the US their infludence is most felt in Minnisota and Oregon.

I am also trying to determine why Marie-Joseph Deguire dite Larose is referred to as Metis as I have been unable to locate any native ancestry. And yet repeatedly she is said to be Cree, Ojibway, Chippawa...

Would love to hear more of what you have found.

Lili

Lili,

I am researching the Illinois and Missouri branches of the Deguire/Colin marriage. In Missouri the Deguire's seem to have prospered.

For example, Jean Baptiste (1719-1782) was born of Francois and Marie-Marguerite Denys (Denis, Veronneau). You can find a record of his baptism in the Drouin collection. He is on the last page from 1719, Notre Dame de Montreal. Also, Jette has a rather good list of the Deguires in his Dictionnaire genealogique des familles du Quebec. It appears that several Deguire's made there way into Illinois territory, then on the Missouri's Ste. Genevieve. From there they spread not far from there original homestead.

Also, there is text from Belting and Ekberg using them as examples of some historical events.

More, if you like.

Brian O'Leary

Hello,

My GG grandfather was Jean Martial Lapeyre and was born in Ascain, FR on 06 Jul 1801.

His mother was Catherine Luquo.

His wife was Angeline Margurite Avegno.

My father inquired with l'Office Genealogique de Paris in 1977 and they said they had no additional information.

We believe Jean Martial's father's name was Capt Alexandre C Lapeyre and his paternal grandfather may have been Raymond Lapeyre.

I am looking for any help, but specifically am wondering why families changed from Lapierre to Lapeyre and also the history of the Martial surname in France.

Thanks!
JP

Saludos
