Bonjour,

Dennis

Not sure if this helps, but my mum's (nee Burly) ancestors, Passfield, Henry, Chatfield, Culberhouse etc all came from the same part of England just in the countryside around London mainly. Try looking up Records in Berkshire, Woolwhich, and the surrounds as these familys often lived in the same street and intermarried. My lot came to Australia and these same families settled in the same City, Perth about 100 years ago.

Hi Angela,

I had a brief email conversation with you some 6 months ago on the message board. I am still very unsure with this research. Yes - I am also from the Peter Castaignet line via the Briggs family - and also still trying to find some basis to the story we were also told about the family coming from Andorra. How did you come up with the information on Peter's father and also his immigration details?

Many thanks. Lorraine Lane

Louis Castaignet - Harbourmaster, Honfleur, Normandy

I am looking for marriage information in relation to Louis Castaignet who was the harbourmaster in Honfleur during 1830 - 1850 period. Also trying to find the birth of his son Peter in 1836, and possible other siblings. Peter later emigrated to Australia and founded the maternal line of my family. On Peter's Australian marriage certificate his Mother's name has been transcribed incorrectly ( was written atrociously) as Leander Choline - i can't even guess as to a correct name for that. There is a family story that the family is originally from Spain, and just recently i have heard from an a lady researching the family of one of Peter's daughters (octavia) that her family story is that the Castaignet's are from Andorra.

Any help, thoughts, information would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a loss how to research French records.

Angela Cook

Lea Buria abt. 1662, b. abt. 1638 in Normandie and d. 1708. His father was Pierre del la Fontaine m. Judith and was born bef. 1598 in St. Lo. His father was Michel de la Fontaine, the Count of St Lo. He was born abt. 1540 and married Estar. He conducted the siege of St. Lo as an aide and won the battle. He was allowed to add the de la in front of his name for the successful seige. He fell in love with a Huguenot girl Estar and converted to her religion. Does this help? It seems that Georges Delisle and Exilda Ouellet did not exist. Please, give me a Hint if you have one:) Sincerely, Maryse

She is descended from a brother of my ancestor ie we are both descended from the youngest of Louis' sons - Joshua. I have been doing further research and now have the Garniers going back to 1640 in Clecy. I went there two years ago and have visited the church and the font where more than likely he was baptised.

Octavia Augustine Danjou was born 13 July 1858 in Beauficel, France. Her parents were Jacques Auguste Danjou and Octavia Bachelet. She was baptized at the church in Beauficel. Her godparents were Jean Danjou and Augustine Bachelet. in 1863 she ran off with a Jewish tailor by the name of Georges Julien Biltz who had already been married and had two sons. In 1886 they immigrated to the U.S.A. After WWI Georges Julien Biltz returned to France by himself and died there 18 December 1924. If anyone has any information on the Danjou or Bachelet line please let me know.

Hello, I am researching a Louis Colivet (born 1837, Normandy, France) and his wife Justine/Augustine) Le Breuiller (born 1836, in France). They moved to Jersey, Channel Islands and had a son John/Jean born in 1860. Louis later remarried a Josephine ? (born 1844 in Portbail, Normandy).

Are there any Colivets in Normandy who have any information on John or Louis Colivet? There's a possibility the surname was Collivet but we're fairly sure the family moved from Normandy to Jersey in the mid-nineteenth century. Would love to hear if you have any information on this. Merci

surname transformation Burchett

A Keltic (Gallic) root for a pointed object, a pointer, a sharp point, a point of land, the root includes animals with a pointed feature, a fish with a sharp nose ("pike" in English), a deer with antlers, a small pointer hunting dog, give the surname Brochet. Related Modern English words include "embroidery", and "brocade", from needlework made with a sharp pointed needle. The surnames Brachet and Brochet, once found immediately north of the Loire River valley, especially near Chartres, later spread in the north and west region of France (Basse-Normandie, Bretagne, Charente-Maritime), may originally have had one single form, the initial vowel inflects from the 'a' towards 'o' and 'u'. Surname derivatives are generated in diffusion under pressure of other linguistic strata (e.g., English in America), where under pressure, 'ro' /'ru' could be transformed into 'or'/'ur', the form could invert, although no instance of this transformation is documented. Burchet could more easily represent an Anglicization of another more common French-Canadian surname, Bourget, i.e., from a burgess, burgher, townsman, a surname which seems more apt from a phonetic perspective, with little change to linguistic form. Have you considered the surname Bourget which could have been carried into New England from Quebec?
Good Luck / Bonne chance! Aldo B.

Jay - See the reply I just posted in reply to the desroches inquiry. Wow - a descendent of Basile. I knew that he's the only one from the family to wind up in Louisiana. The British didn't make it to Malpeque, where Julien's crowd lived -- just about the only part of Ile St-Jean (Prince Edward Island) from which they didn't expel the Acadiens. I've never found out how my many-times-great uncle got nabbed. By the way, my father is a direct paternal-line descendent (as am I, of course) of Julien, but my mother is 100% German from the Rhineland, descended from the Protestants the British imported to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in the late 1750s, to counterbalance the Acadian Catholic population. Would like to exchange info. Email: jderoche@eastlink.ca

Hi, I am also a descendent of Julien Desroche (have the complete line from him to me) who emigrated from Carolles (with his brother) to what is now the province of Prince Edward Island in Canada. Recently a book has been published on the ancestry of these people (the PEI DesRoches). I am presently on vacation and will have to send you the reference when I get home late in August (2008). If you are unable to read French (which I do), I could help you with the details. I really enjoy genealogy & would like to get in touch to exchange more details. I hope to travel to Carolles (with my son) and to other sites in France where I had ancestors, in 2009 or 2010.

I am a descendant of Isaac DuBose/DuBosc & Suzanne Couillandeau thru their son Stephen, a brother of Antonie DuBose. I am interested in information of descendants of Antonie (Anthony) DuBose, as I have no information on him after 1742 in SC.

Purely speculation is my thought that he may have moved to Cape Fear area of North Carolina because a Anthoine Debose is found in that area. This Anthoine DeBose is said to have come from South Carolina with other families. It is known that Antoine or Anthony lived in Wilmington, North Carolina and had property in what is now Pender County.

Also, the name Anthony is prevalent in the DeBose line in that area. Fortunately, I do not have dates for the above.

Do you have dates for your Elijah DeBusk, Jacob DeBusk, and Antonie DuBose.

Al DuBose
Savannah, Ga

La Valette, Normandy?

Does anybody know of a Huguenot church near La Valette, Normandy in the late 1600's or around 1700? First question is which La Valette? (It just means Little Valley.) It is possibly that it is the few houses called La Valette near Surville, Manche, Normandy but could be any La Valette.
In the Quakers Church minutes, the burial of Charles Francis TIMMONS, M.D. on 22-Jul-1754 lists his birthplace as La Valette, Normandy, France. I assume his French name would have been Timon. He is buried at the French Huguenot flax drying glenn near Edenderry, Ireland just down the Largan river from the French Huguenot linen weaving center at Lurgan.

Ray

As far as can be determined, no one has ever been able to prove the father of Elijah DeBusk, husband of Catherine Rouse. To date the exact relationship of the other DeBusk in Washington County, Virginia can not be nailed down with a 100 percent accuracy. There are people that believe that DeBusks came from Germany and some think they were Hugunots. I have communicated with people that swear that their ancestors spoke German. A lot of the people that settled here were German. I have been trying to prove some of this since 1957 with no luck. I have written a book and have a DeBusk Picture site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~minascpi/
DeBusk.htm
If anyone can prove anything before Elijah I would be very interested.

Charles Patterson

I am a descendant of Julien Desroches & Marie Maguerite Arceneaux through their son Basile Desroches who came to Louisiana with other Acadian exiles. Basile married Marie Edelmayer (of German ancestry) and had 4 children: Agathe, Angélique, Jean Baptiste & Louis.

Next time I am in SLC I will try to find some info on Carolles, Département de la Manche, France.

Let me add that after the French Revolution in 1792 going up to present times the government of France required that all births, marriages and deaths as well as divorces and adoptions be recorded by the mayor with copies going to the departemental and federal government levels.

You can find detailed information for each person using the "l'état civil" records. Many of these records have been filmed by the Mormons and are online using the Archives of each Département in France.

The entire URL I sent out was not included. After "...DEPARTMENTALES" add the following "_DE_LA_MEUSE.htm"

I think it will work if you substitute the department you are interested in for the "MEUSE" above.

Ken
