If you know the date of birth and the commune & it's over 100 years ago (which it is) you simply contact the dep. archives http://www.cg41.fr/jahia/cg41/Accueil/cadre_de_vie/archives-... and use their email button (courriel) and ask them to furnish you with a copy of the birth registration. They will send you a one page "acte de naissance" which will be a narrative account of the registration, give you the parents names and ages (probably when they married) and witnesses, addresses etc. From there you can probably start to step backwards. It might also have the marriage details written in the margin. If it hasn't, then you are likely to be stuck for his marriage as the commune is unknown and the date is likely to be 1920s/1930s and the records possibly still closed.

If you get the acte de naissance and you can't read it/understand it, contact me and I will look at it for you.

HTH
Good Luck
Sherry (23170 Viersat)

Clotaire married Suzanne Levaye (daughter of Ernest Levaye and Julie Lecomte)in Loir-et-Cher but area is unknown. Clotaire died on 2 Jan 1995 in Montoire, Loir-et-Cher.
Is there any one else out there researching this family or could assist me as I live in Australia and Loir-et-Cher records are not yet on line.
Thank you.

What do you mean "Seeking information"? What sort of information? You need to be very specific especially as this is the Centre board and Paris is not in the Centre!

Same goes for your other post about Juliette. Cannes isn't in the Centre.

Everything in France (well, almost everything) is locally held. You need to know where and say where. Vague statements like "may have died in France" get nowhere because they can't. Paris, itself is a nightmare to search as each arrondisement is separate. Each commune is also separate so "near" somewhere doesn't help at all.

Come back to me if you have more details (anything) and I'll try to help you further, if I can.

Best
Sherry
Hi,
I believe I have some information that can help you regarding James Hacques D'auge!
Capt. James Jacques Dague (b. abt 1660 maybe in Saintonge, France) came to Princess Anne Co., VA. Supposedly, he was a sea captain who transported people to America.
James Dauge first appears in Virginia records in a court case in Lower Norfolk County dated 15 March 1687/8. He complains to the court that a neighbor, James Sherwood, "for not helping to clear the highways and make a bridge over a cypress swamp". This evidently involves the mandatory labor levied by highway committees on affected property owners, a common colonial practice. James Sherwood and his wife Grace (later accused of witchcraft) were living in present-day Princess Anne County ("Grace Sherwood, the Virginia Witch" William & Mary Quarterly, 1894, vol.3#2,pp.96-7).
1691-1696: He was a member of the Princess Ann County Court. The records show that he was very active in the local government.
1696: He married Mary Bonney, daughter of his next door neighbor, Richard Bonney. Between 1700-1710, he and Mary had 9 children: Jacquelin, John, Richard, James Jr., William, Mary, Macina, Peter and Nowdina.
1699: His signature appears on a declaration made by the Princess Anne Co. Militia swearing allegiance to the new sovereigns William and Mary.
1704: He paid rent on 784 acres in Princess Anne Co.
1713: he bought 1,025 acres in Currituck Co., NC
1714: He was Sheriff of Currituck Co.
1716: He received patents on land in Currituck Co.
April 13, 1719: Will written
Sept. 2, 1719: Will probated in Princess Anne Co., although it is said that he died in Currituck Co.
I hope this helps!
Happy Hunting,
Danielle Dozier
Tallahassee, Florida

I have quite a bit of info. about the Tennier family of Gaspe. The Tennier's were from Normandy in France, they immigrated to Gaspe in the early 1800's. Jean Baptiste Tennier was married to Catherine Leservioser, they were from Normandy France, their son Victor Tennier was from Subligny, Normandy France, He married Angelique Roussy. I think Victor was the one that came to Canada. I hope this helps. You can find more info. at Ancetry.com on the Tennier Family tree.
Tammy Goetz

The document belonged to Josephine Annette Brierre(b. 25 July 1827 in Pithiviers, Loriet, Centre) who is my great great grandmother. In 1848 Josephine married Louis Ettienne Mathieu, an Orleans restaurateur (b 23 March 1827 in Briare). They emigrated to the US in 1852 to join the Icarian Communitity led by Ettienne Cabet in Nauvoo, Illinios. I also have thier marriage contract.

Xavier, Thanks for responding. Please forgive me as I am not a professional genealogist. I have no government documentation on my great grandmother Andree. I remember her personally. She spoke very litte of her life in France. I do not have her death certificate.I was told by my grandmother(now deceased), Andree was born Dec. 23,1892 in France and that she married my great grandfather James Means on April 22, 1919 in France.

Andree died in 1977 and is burried in the Spring Hill Cemetary, Wellsville Ohio. I do not have an Immigration Act and don't know how to get a copy. Eight years ago I met Jean Dassieu, a distant cousin who's mother was Andree's sister. Jean came to the USA around 1970. He recently died from cancer. Before his passing we discussed our families and their lives. He told me about the area he thought his mother and my ggrand mother was born. (Mennetou-sur-Cher)He discussed his fathers military service and had the service medals to back his conversation. He provided information for me to contact our relatives in France but I do not speak French and have not yet attempted to reach them.

Please rest assured I have no ill will or anything to gain in this situation. I am merely an American of French ancestory attempting to piece together what information I have from various family members. I thought I may be able to reach someone in France who spoke english, and might be related. I searched the surname Enguehard and found this web page. I only wish to determine who my French ancestors were.

Thanks Again, Jim Williams

I am trying to find any connection to the above names. Roger
Georgio Fusie married Dorothy Oive Cubitt on 29.5.1937 in London. Roger was a hairdresser and his address was Paris 15. at the time of the marriage.
According to family!, the couple moved to France and worked for "Mrs Simpson" who later married Royalty.
The union did not work and Dorothy (known as Olive in her adult life) later married a unknown Corsican.
I cannot speak any French so all contact must be in English. Any help would be really welcome
Many Thanks, Joy

During the Great War my father had a French girlfriend. I have some of her letters she sent my father after he returned to the States. I also have a picture of her. But I only have her first name -- "Maddy" -- and an address -- 1 Place de la Barre, Bourges. My father told me her father was an industrialist -- they were rather wealthy I believe. She moved to Toulouse in 1920 or so and may have died there. Her letters to my father are very touching and I would love to find out more about her.
Merci beaucoup! Je serais tres reconnaissant envers quelq'un qui peut m'aider.

Re: Are there any French Censuses

Yes Suzanne, there are French censuses but they are not online because they are rarely used in French genealogy : all is needed is on the entries of birth, marriage and death, where parents are named, place and date of birth, maiden names of women always given (at least from the 18th century)...
Censuses were started around 1836 and taken every five years, except in case of wars. After WW2 they were less frequent, about every 8 years, and since 1999, the last national census, it has been decided to take them every year for selected areas, so the workload is spread. I am probably one of the few using the French censuses because I live in England and I used them extensively for my English husband's ancestry.
You will need to use a paid researcher living in Paris and check first that the censuses have survived of course. There should be one for 1876, 1881, 1886, 1891, 1896 etc.
Good luck

In France I have done the research into my ancestry myself, as I go back often where I was born; but I can inquire with some Parisian friends if they recommand someone. Where do you live ? Your answer came rather quickly... Give me time to obtain the info or explore websites for "genealogistes professionnels Paris". Perhaps some of them advertise also in English.

NO, she could not have been "dittoed" as you say because French women always go through life with their maiden name for any official documents. When I vote I am still under my maiden name Lunais, and when I die, I will be entered/indexed as "Lunais wife Pigott" if my husband is alive, and "Lunais widow Pigott" if he is dead already. I am at the library in Bexleyheath (Kent) because we do not have broadband at home. You must be waiting in front of your screen !!!

I think that I should be able to find her in the Paris census quite quickly as had her address where she died in Paris (as stated on my original message board) - then again she may have been dittoed under the name of the man she was living with.
