I have a contact in Ireland who I forwarded on your query to. Her response is as follows:

"No I have never heard of Arthur Ricemedon de Meurant, but Arthur Richardson Meurant is well known, and as far as I know never went to Oz and did not marry Julia Kelly. It looks like another marvellous Meurant tale, but anything is possible. Could you give me the email of the person who put it on Rootsweb. Would like to know where the information came from. Civil registration did not start in Ireland until 1864, so would make searching very difficult."

She has asked me to pass on to you her details:
Ms Petra Coffey at email manuscoffey@eircom.net

Petra is researching Ferdinand and other Huguenots (French Protestants like Ferdinand) who fled to Ireland to escape persecution in France.

Regards

Lee Hill

It is VERY remotely possible????? Ferdinand was transported to Australia from Ireland in 1799 and left behind a wife (Sophia)and 2 sons. The date of your Meurant's marriage suggests that IF he is related that he would likely be the son of one of those two boys.

To confirm any of this would require extensive research on the Irish BDM records.

Good Luck

Regards

Lee Hill

Dear Meurant People, One of my ancestors went by the name of Arthur Ricemedon de Meurant, born Dublin Ireland, married Julia Kelly in 1849 in Melbourne(NSW).Lived in Gipps Street Paddington; one daughter - Annie. After 1861, when Julia died,I believe he then lived in England and remarried.

My question is - have any of you heard of this man? Is he related to Ferdinand Meurant?

Thank you for any information.

Dear "Calypso"

I am going to France next year but I am not even going to try to track down Ferdinand's history! I have copies of the two letters from Sophia to the Lieutenant Governor of Ireland petitioning him to allow her and their two children to accompany Ferdi to Australia. I can forward these and any other info I have to you if you send your email address to me at leehill@tpg.com.au

See my earlier post as to why it would be virtually impossible to trace him. Many of his descendants have been trying to tie down his birthplace for the past 30-40 years. Unfortunately, given his carelessness with the truth and the fact that he was a protestant, I don't think we are likely to do any better. But good hunting anyway!!

Regards

Warren Lee Hill

I am interested in any history relating to Ferdinand and his family. I am an Australian descentant. My great grand mother was Selina Elvira Rosetta Du Meurant. She was a beautiful looking woman and lovely person according to my father. My daughter hopes to go to France in 2011 and will visit relevant historical sites (if any, and if found). Thank you.

Some areas have archives online eg. Aube Department has ten year tables (table decennale) of BDM for each village in alphabetical order for each 10 year set covering 1803 to 1882 see http://www.archives-aube.com/index_archives.htm

You might also consider joining one of the French Yahoo discussion groups on "genealogie" (this is the FRENCH SPELLING) at http://fr.groups.yahoo.com/ On this page go to "Trouver un group" which is "find a group" so use "genealogie" and the Department name for your relatives origins eg. Aube, to find a more specific group. Join the group (it's free) The more info you can provide on your ancestor the better. In most cases if you give them enough they will track it down in the Archives. The language is in french, but you can get away with using Google translation and explain your lack of french - they will often reply in english and translate the Acte (scanned copy of the orignal parish record in old french). In most cases you will find these groups very helpful. I found 2 cousins and got my french ancestors back to 1550's!!!

Good Hunting!

Regards

Lee Hill

Here is another way to find out about your relatives from Champagne or any other place from France. I am French but live in the US. I use the Mormons' Family Centers to do my research on this side of the pond. They have copies of most towns in France and it is open to everyone, regardless of religious belief. I think they have centers all over the world. It's free to go there. If you need a microfilm, all you have to pay is shipping. These microfilms are the exact copies of the civil and church records the Archives in France hold. Check out FamilySearch.org for a center near you. You will also find there, cheat sheets for understanding French archives, words, time periods, etc.

Most people on the Yahoo groups are French and do not speak English very well so you will probably have to post in French. Good luck.

Hi

I am researching my family in Aube (10) in Champagne-Ardennes and use the Yahoo genealogy groups to locate people who are able to do research at the archives. The research is done for free and they will send you scanned copies of original parish records (with a translation from "Old French" if needed). The people on my groups that I am a member of are only too willing to help, but "patience is a virtue" because some are very busy and you may need to wait a week for them to get your info if they are busy. For Ardennes you might send an email to the following address to join the group:

GenArdennes-subscribe@yahoogroupes.fr

Note that the language on this one is French. If you do not speak French you can always write in english and use translator such as Google and past the translation into your email to the site. Let them know when you ask for info that you don't speak French and use a translator - often they do speak english and will respond directly to you. I have been in contact with 2 very distant cousins in France - one of whom speaks fluent english, the other a bit!!

Hope this helps!

Regards

Lee Hill
Sydney, Australia
leehill@tpg.com.au

Hello Rebecca, Right now I live in Arizona (last 10 years) but was born in MI and married a Champine/Champagne and have been researching my late husband's family tree. Someone in Canada was kind enough to send me the info....I have more, but they belong to other branches of the family. I would however, like to know how/why Isabella moved to Australia....marriage date, etc. if you have the info.
Please send me an email pine1234@citlink.net
Happy hunting, Teri Champine

Hi Warren,

Thanks so much for the information!

Ferdinand is also my great, great grandfather. I am related via Elvira Meurant his daughter with Rose; Elvira married William Pike in 1839

I have only just started to trace him so don’t have much to go on at this point. The information you have given is great (thankyou!) but I agree it is extremely difficult once you get to the 1600’s with most ancestors and if you add to the equation the fact he was a Huguenot and good at “a bit careless with the truth” it dose make it difficult.

If I find any information along the way I will send it on to you.

Again thanks for you help.

Regards Les
Ferdinand is my wife's great great grandfather.

I have joined a number of French Yahoo family history websites to try to track down info on his birth, as well as his parents.

I too found info on the web that indicated that Louis De Meurant & Jeanne Trinquant were his parents, but have since been advised by descendants of these two that they lived in Maine et Loire (49) in France and had one son - Joseph in 1863, I think? Ferdinand is NOT their son.

Also, he variously claimed to be from Champagne, as well as Frontignac (naming his property in Western Sydney, Australia, "Frontignac"). However, Frontignac (now known as Frontignan) is located in the south of France in the Department of Herault (34)in the Languedoc-Roussillon Region and Champagne is a part of a region name Champagne-Ardenne) in central France. Ferdinand seems to have been "a bit careless with the truth" which makes it even harder to trace him. I have traced my own father's ancestors back to 1630 in France.

In addition, he was a Huguenot or protestant and at the time he was born in 1965 they were persecuted in France. Consequently, it is unlikely that you will find any trace of him in the French BDMs that are based on Catholic parish records. There is a gap of 102 years in the protestant records that spans the year of his birth. After his conviction for forgery in Ireland, his first wife Sophia (maiden name unknown) twice petitioned the Irish Government to allow her to travel with him to Australia. Her second petition was granted, but she never came!!

Do you have any information to substantiate his birthplace?

Regards

Warren Lee Hill
(leehill@tpg.com.au)

I am looking for information about Ferdinand’s parents Louis De Meurant & Jeann Trinquant. There seems to be quite a lot of information on Ferdinand but very little on his parents. He fled France during the revolution, but what of his family? Any information would be appreciated

Researching Degruy/De Gruy & Allied Families

Greetings,

I administer the Degruy@Rootsweb list. This list mainly focuses on American Louisiana & Le Pays de Illinois history; however, we are expanding to include our European ancestry. We've been thinking that perhaps if we submit a list of some of the families allied to our Degruys, we might find researchers "out there" who might be interested in sharing research on some of these names. So below you will find a list of some of our related names. We are limiting this to our European connections.

If anyone wants to respond, here are some options: you could join the Degruy@rootsweb.com list and submit your contributions and queries to the list. That would make sense if you have a lot of interconnections. If not, you could respond to me at the following address and I will then submit your email to the Degruy list and ask anyone relevant to your research to contact you. If you do this please use this email:

listadministratordegruyl@earthlink.net

This is an "experiment." We'll just have to take it step by step and see how it goes.

Thanks for any participation.
R H

Here are some of our European ancestry names:

Aufrere Baussancourt Chantereine Conte/Le Conte/ Le Comte Dagobert D’Aulnay Grizon Gruy Verloin/ Verloing Hastier Mesnil Pamplume Perry/ Le Perrin Roy Saint-Simon Villeneuve

PS: Our progenitor also had the names Dumenil/ DuMesnil, Valentin, Fouchard, de la Folie [some of these may have been European family names or titles, so I don't know if there's any point in including these at this point. In the beginning Antoine Jean-Baptiste Valéntin Du Mésnil Fouchart Verloin spelled his "last name" as Degruysverloin [all one word with an umlaut on the y.] Eventually that became Verloin DeGruy.

One of our goals is to determine if the family ultimately originated in the Gruyeres, Switzerland area.

Bettie,

LDS is the genealogy site from the Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS). To find it on the internet, go to Family Search.org. Here is the address of the center nearest to you:
New Orleans Louisiana
5025 Cleveland Pl
Metairie, Jefferson, Louisiana, United States
Phone: 504-885-3936
Hours: T-Th 9am-12pm.
Closed: Holidays

The genealogy site that Blaise Marion was talking about is actually the site where I met the man in France that is willing to help me.

I looked up the information that Mr. Marion supplied and I plan on contacting the submitter to see if he reads/writes in English. I also forwared the link to my contact in France to see if he would read and interpret the French part for me.

I will let you know what I find out.

Karen

Hello,

You may want to look on geneanet.org and look up the last name along with the place (I found one hit for Junot in Haiti!): http://www.geneanet.org/contact.php3?place=CAP%20FRANCAIS%20...

Also your LDS center should have a How To on doing research in French Documents (probably also available online). All Civil Records are written in a the same wording so it is really not as hard as it looks. Once you know how to read one, you can read most of them. I find it easier then US documents but a. I am French and b. I have been working on these for the last 10 years.

Hope this helps.

Blaise MARION

Unfortunately I have not been able to find anything in France. I have however found a gentleman in France willing to do research for me, but the infomation I provided is not enough.

I am trying to get the information that LDS has on a Junot (Juneau) in Santo Domingo (Hati).

Several years ago I ordered a microfilm from them and spent hours at the local LDS genealogy center looking at the mfilm and because it was all in French I couldn't read it. I told the man in France about that and he said if I could get a hard copy of the microfilm that it might help him know where to begin his research in France. Well my local Lafayette LDS genealogy center is no longer open and I have been trying to get in touch with the Opelousas center which is opened by appt only but I never can get anyone to answer the phone. The next center is in Baton Rouge but I work and so it makes it hard to be able to go there.

Have you ever used the LDS center in your area and have you ever looked up the information they have on this Junot (Juneau) from Santo Domingo?

Any help you can give me to send to my contact in France would be helpful and I would be willing to share what he finds.

Karen
