In the 1700s, my ancestors came to America from Saintonge, France. Their name was a variation of present-day Eppinette, including: d'Espanay, DeLa E'Spinay, Epinet, Epinett, Eppinet, and Pinet. If anyone has access to such information, would you kindly check local directories to see if any families by any of these names remain? We want to go to the area. A small amount of research has shown it to be beautiful and historically interesting. They left the area in approximately 1750, according to family records. Thank you.

My ex-husband abandoned his two daughters when they were very young---I have little to no family history from their father's side of the family. Indications are that they are of native/metis ancestry. Here is what I do know: My daughter's names are Felicia and Cheyenne; my ex-husband's name is Richard Bruce Gow from Ottawa/Hull; his mother's name (deceased) was Lorette Gow (nee Fournier) and his father's name (deceased) was Percy Gow. Richard has a sister, Joan who was or is married to Danny Knight and they have two daughters Tammy and Kathy. I believe they reside somewhere in or around the Gatineaus in Quebec. Percy had a sister Marge or Marjorie nee Gow. It is Lorette's side of the family I am interested in. She had a sister, Cecile LaCroix (nee Fournier), a nephew Luc or Luke Lacroix. I believe that Lorette grew up in the area of Lac Ste Marie, and her parents were of aboriginal descent. Her father's first name was something like Turgeon--or started with a T. Richard Gow had a family ring from his grandfather with a T on it. He spoke of spending a lot of his childhood at a lake in Quebec with his Grandfather Fournier (Lac Ste Marie??)

FROUIN, SOULIE, DUTILLOY in Aigrefeuille

I'm looking for information about the family of Marie Madeleine FROUIN (born 21 July 1875 in Aigrefeuille d'Aunis; died 20 May 1963 in Virginia). Her parents were Rene Frouin (born about 1839-1840) and Thais or Chais Ernestine DUTILLOY (born about 1837-1838). Both parents were still alive at Madeleine's marriage on 6 October 1898. Madeleine also had a brother, Georges, who was a doctor in Aigrefeuille, and died about 1948. Madeleine married Jean Frederic SOULIE, an Army Captain. They had a daughter, Renee Jeanne Soulie, born 31 October 1899 and a son born sometime later who died about 1906. Jean died in early 1911, and Madeleine and Renee emigrated to the US (Virginia) in 1919. Any help would be most appreciated!

I finally made some progress on my BONIN line only to find that I have the BONIN line running through my family twice and I am not sure if they are seperate families or the same.

My grandmother was Lillian Bonin Doyle. Her father's parents were Antoine Bonin (b 1828 Ste-Elizabeth, Canada) and Julie Carriere (b.1829 Montreal, Quebec, Canada).

I trace Antoine Bonin's father side (Antoine-Nicolas Bonin b. 06 Dec 1794) back to Nicolas Bonin dit Ste-Marie and Marie Francoise Houde dit Houle in the mid 1700.

I then find out that Antoine Bonin's mother (Marie Elisabeth Dalcour b.19 Apr 1797 St-Cuthbert, Quebec, Canada) who was married to Antoine-Nicolas Bonin (m. 11 May 1818 Sainte-Elisabeth, Sainte-Elisabeth, Quebec, Canada) has the BONIN family in her line. Her parents were Ignace Dalcourt & Marie Anne Frappier dit Sthilaire. Ignace Dalcourt parents were Jean Baptiste Guignard dit Dalcour and Marie Josephe Bonnin (b. 05 Sep 1720 Contrecoeur, Quebec, Canada). This line goes back to the Nicolas Bonin dit Ste-Marie & Marie Esmery (m. 19 Nov 1684). This is the Nicolas that you speak of in your emails who is a soldier. I then go back on this line to Nicolas dit l'Aîné Bonin married to Anne Buchard (m. Abt. 1620 La Couarde-sur-Mer, Notre-Dame-des-Bonnes-Nouvelles, France)

Do you have any of these lines in your research?

Judy Doyle Turner
probably comes from “tourte” which is translated into English by “pie”.

In the past, the word “tourte” had rather meant a kind of bread.

the termination “erie” indicates the place or we could find of “la tourte” (manufacture or/and sale).

I find this for the toponymy of village (but not the hamlet) in France:
http://crehangec.free.fr/

Hi Tammy:

Have you done a research in http://www.rootsweb.com/ as to the name PIERRE RACHAL? Several persons are doing a research on Pierre Rachal from Ile d'Oleron.

As for French Army ... I have no idea ... what year and what war are we talking about? Couldn't come up with anything - sorry! perhaps someone else will help you.

Good luck.

Lucie

Hi Tammy:

Ile d’Oleron is in the Poitou-Charentes Region (zone 17) which is in the Charentes Maritime, Department 17:

http://home.att.net/~bpatftw/oleron.htm
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sylvain.chardon/locom/loc_t_fr_dpt.h...
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sylvain.chardon/locom/loc_t_fr_reg.h...

In this site: http://www.st-denis-oleron.com/contenu/patri.html (it's in French), it mentions that the church of Saint-Denis twice, in 1575 and 1584. It was rebuilt end of the 16th century. It was restored in 1889.

The church most certainly must have registers when the church was rebuilt end of the 16th century. I couldn't find an exact address for that church so you should address your request simply to:

Eglise Saint-Denis
17550 Saint-Denis d’Oleron
France

or write to the Mairie inquiring as to where could you find certains records, or better yet send a FAX (in French preferably):

Mairie de Saint Denis
Rue de la Liberation
17550 Saint-Denis d’Oleron
e-mail : st.denis.oleron@wanadoo.fr

I'll get back with you if I find something regarding French Army records.

Amicalement,

Lucie

He came from Ile de Re in LaRochelle and I believe that his father was a Blacksmith . Do you think they could possibly be related? I don't think there were too many Boret's in France. What was your grandfathers first name?

Contacted La Rochelle town hall re birth records for Alexandre Boret born circa 1829 son of Pierre Boret a blacksmith. They couldn't find him.
He gives La Rachelle (I presume an enumerator error) as his place of birth on a UK census. Am wondering if he's just given the nearest large town. Anyone got any ideas where else I could try to find him.
Have also tried the Maritime Museum at La Rochelle as he worked as a rigger but they hold no personal records. I haven't a clue as to where I would look for the French equivalent of a seamans ticket or even if there are such things. Could anyone give me some tips as I'm stumped.
Many thanks.

I know his father is Joseph and mother Elisabeth and he was born in trois rivieres but have not found our missing link. Sally
