They were born in Corsica in the 1820s. My great-grandfather, Pedro Mateo Morazzani Mattei, was their son. He arrived in Puerto Rico in 1870 and lived in Guayama. He had a brother named Antonio Morazzani Mattei who resided in Yauco, PR. I would like to find out more about the Mattei family in PR.

I am searching for any information on a Juan Guilfo. This last name may have been phonetically spelled, as I have found it spelled numerous ways. My ancestor was Juan Guilfo, born 1756 in Corsica, Italy, which is how it is stated and spelled in the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge, LA Vol 2 marriage, baptism and burial records. I have found where possibly two of his sons may have gone to Puerto Rico around 1804 to 1815 to live with family there. Juan's parents are listed as Antoine Ghilfuchy and Maria Streglia, Italianos in these records. Any information or direction as to where I might find information is much appreciated.

Hello Carla! Thanks for your reply :-)

Good you have several similar names to choose from, as I cannot think of any Corsican name that looks even close!

The family reportedly fled to Constantinople at the time (and because of) the French Revolution (so that would be by around 1790 - 1795).

No idea where in Corsica the family would have been from (that's one of the things we're trying to find out). As for trade, I'd say "aristocrats", as the reason they fled the French Revolutionaries is that they were "nobles" (I believe the original ancestors were known as "counts of [de] Zamafta"). It's very likely the spelling has been modified in the last 200 years though, and I think that's the main stumbling block, to get the "original" spelling of the name (or town/village/region).

By the way, now that I'm on it, are there any records or lists of families/names associated w/ Paoli's government/army? I find interesting this family (and many others) found necesary to flee Corsica at a time when others just chose to make nice w/ the French (such as the Bonapartes), thus there's the possibility that these "fleeing families" were too closely associated w/ anti-French activites (or simply were too anti-French themselves) to consider living under a French government in Corsica. Let me know...

Thank you!

I can think of several that are similar and could probably narrow it down with some background. If they were North or South American immigrants, to where in particular? Approximate years, given names, business trade or any clues to which town in Corsica they were from?
Carla

ZAMAFTA in Corsica...?

Hello all...

I'm helping out an acquintance in her family search. Reportedly a "noble" family from Corsica by the end of the XVIII century, which had to flee Corsica due to the French Revolution and it's anti-noble spirit. Has anyone heard the name ZAMAFTA (or similar) associated w/ Corsica, either as a name-place or as a family name...? Any info or suggestion greatly appreciated...

Cheers!

Paul

I do not dispute that anthropologically, genetically, historically, and linguistically, Corsicans are “an Italianate people.” My point is that politically Corsicans do not want to be part of Italy any more that Puerto Ricans want to be part of Spain. My own family originated in Genoa and moved to Corsica in 1523. This is the case of most Corsican families. However, I know of no serious group in Corsica that desires reunification with Italy.

I respect your “wish” but are in a significant minority. As for my “wish,” I would love to see Corsica independent. Independence will not happen either. As you know, the Corsicans rejected a move to give them greater autonomy within the French Republic.
AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY 121:270–279 (2003)

"Conversely, the Corsican sample had elevated
levels of alternative haplotypes common in Northern Italy."

"The frequencies observed in the Corsican population seem to converge toward those detected in continental Italy, as shown by the Fst probability value that does not reach the significance level (Table 3). This may be due to other distinctive gene flows that overlaid a previous genetic heritage shared with Sardinia. This result is consistent with linguistic data showing that the Corsican language is more closely related to Tuscan than to the Sardinian language (Grimes, 1996). The pattern of affinity is also
supported by mtDNA RFLP data (Morelli et al., 2000), but not by pairwise difference analysis (Varesi et al., 2000).

"Regarding Corsica, the M173 haplotype approaches
60%, while the various 12f2, M35, M172, and M201
haplotypes represent about 30% of the variation.
These results are similar to those observed in central-
northern Italy."

Siete Italiani :)

I do not where you live nor if you visit Corsica regularly as I do. I can tell you that you would find little support in Corsica for any union with Italy. This is a fact. You are entitled to your own opinion but not to your own facts.

Negroni
