Jacques VILDIBILLE b. 1775, his wife Mary Ann b.abt 1783 and their three children, Charles, Louis and Catherine emmigrated to the US on the Henri IV. They left the port of LeHavre and arrived in New York on 17 May 1828. Ship information says they came from Dung, Doubs, Franche-Compte,France. Other than Charles and his descendants I have 'lost' the family once they landed in NY. I am also hoping to find Jacques parents and Mary Ann's maiden name. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Interesting name. Have you tried this website:
http://doubsgenealogie.fr/genealogie/actes/index.php

In my limited experience Mary Ann may have been Marie Anne in France.

In the advanced search if you enter VIL for the surname, and click on au debut (beginning) it'll bring up quite a few names starting with VIL. There was a Jean Georges Ville Dit Bille born in 1770. Joseph born in 1773, Jeanne in 1774, Anne Clémence in 1776, etc. They were all born in Dung (how embarrassing)

Dung is an hour walk west of Montbeliard - very close.

It would appear they would have married after the Revolution, so you may have to check the microfilm of the civil records.

Looking at the ship list transcription provided by Annette Lynch, she says Mr. J Vildibille was born about 1777.

Your right...interesting name...and challenging. We have all had a few laughs over the name Dung.

I've found juat a few in the US that I haven't been able to 'tie' to our family yet. One of those is a Charles Vildebille and his family (deceased)in Connecticut. He was born in Montbeliard. His wifes maiden name Chagnot. This family has ties to the Moullin family from France. There were Moullin's on the ship with the Vildebill's. Hmmm.

Thank you for the website and the hints on how to search it! I will look up the other names this week as well.

I also appreciate the advice on the civil records. I have a gentleman that has offered to do a 'limited' look up for me at the archives in Sept. I'll have him check on the marriage.

The records from the port of New York list J. as being born(abt)1777. The records from France say Jacques was born 1775.

Thanks again for your help. Shirley

I just found out that the 10-year tables listing births are available online. Er..some of them. There were quite a few listed in the first decade of the Revolution (1793-1802). I think the next decade wasn't available. Let me see if I can cut and paste the directions to get to them on the French website... (Thank you Annette!)

But, before you go to the town records, to find the Menegay file, type the name in the box marked recherche, upper left.
