Searching for Lapaille family of France

Need help locating Hypolite and Rose Lapaille both born in France. Rose was born in 1806 and died in 1882 in the USA. They had 2 daughters named Helena and Juliette both also born in France. Juliette was born July 27, 1832 and Helena in 1840. I believe they came to the USA circa 1848 according to the 1900 US Census. Helena married Albert Huicq (born in Belgium) and Juliette married August Bersier (born in Switzerland) but I don't know when or where. Any information regarding this family would be appreciated.

Rodolfo d'Arbelles and Isidra Izeguirre were my husband Gustavo Guerrero's great grandparents. We can only trace family to Rodolfo who immigrated from France to Nicaragua around the last quarter of the 1800s settling in the port city of Cortino, Nicaragua. We would be very interested in anything previous to his immigration that you have found as we begin this research.

Leo,
Following is an excerpt from a family history written by me Grandmother. Her Grandfather was Louis LaMetterey from LeHavre, France.
"I am starting my story with my grandparents on my Mother’s side. My grandfather, Louis Nicholas Napoleon LeMaitre was born in LeHavre France on September 22, 1852. Nothing is known of his mother. His father and grandfather were both military men in Napoleon's army. His father was a general and his grandfather was quite close to the king. When Louis was quite young, he ran away from a boarding school in LeHavre, stowed away on a ship which his older brother was working, and came ashore in New Orleans. He worked at farm work and as a water boy in the Civil War. He worked his way up to southern Minnesota. When he was 22, he met and married, Frances Mary Dickey, on August 5, 1875. Frances Mary was born on October 22, 1859 in Lanesboro, Filmore County, Minnesota, to Andrew Dickey and Louise Recie. Andrew and Louise had both come from near Frankfurt Germany. Andrew was born in 1825, and passed away in 1917. Louise was born in 1839, and passed away in 1898. When my grandparents, Louis and Frances LaMetterey , had two children, Frances and Gertrude, they moved by covered wagon, with a pair of oxen and a cow, up near Elizabeth, Minnesota, where they built a log cabin. This was about 1880. President Grover Cleveland signed their homestead certificate of ownership in 1888. Their third child Mary Dorothy (my mother) was born in the log cabin December 21, 1880. They had six more children, Ambrose born 1882, Lawrence born 1884, Ellen (Zalusky) born 1893, Lucile (Forbey) born 1896, Rose (Brown) born 19 hundred, and Bernadette (Auger) born in 19 02. About 19 hundred, they had outgrown the log cabin and built a large frame house. It was the first frame house built in Ottertail County."

I would be interested if you find any links to your family with this information.

Larry Karl

I have a cousin who was killed in WWI and a newspaper account says his death occurred in Larcy, France. I can't find any such place on a French map.

Have any of you seen or heard of this town?

Also, I have only found one list of WWI casualties out on the net. If you know of any online sources, please let me know!

Thanks!

Pierre Langlois (John Peter Langlois) born c1700

I am looking for any assistance possibly from French (and hopefully English) language speakers researching French family history.

I have a seventh (7th) generation grandfather named Pierre Langlois (possibly John Peter Langlois) born possibly between 1700 and 1720 in either France or England.

What is known is that Pierre Langlois lived in London in the mid 1740-1760's and became a renowned Ebeniste (a French Cabinetmaker) and who is quite well known in the world of fine furniture and whose pieces can still be found in Buckingham Palace and a number of other art galleries in the USA and parts of the UK. He is quite prominent on the internet.

What is known is that Pierre's wife was a Tracey Langlois (whose name appeared on London rate books in the 1760's) and who died under this name in 1781 (death registered at St Pancras Parish Church, London). Pierre had three children named Mary (possibly Marie) Francoise Langlois born about 1740, Jane Alexander (or Alexandra) Langlois born about 1750 and Peter Daniel Langlois born between 1751 and 1755. It is unknown where the 3 children where born, however each were married in one of the St Pancras Churches, Camden, London. I have not been able to narrow down which London parish they may have been baptised in, if they were baptised in London at all.

Pierre's trade card (half written in French and English) is held at the British Museum. Given this and a number of his bills of trade being written in French, it would appear that he was definitely of French background, however his exact date and place of birth is unknown.

Pierre is believed to be one and the same whose burial was listed under the name John Peter langlois on 19 Feb 1767 in St Pancras, London.

Many articles have been written about Pierre Langlois and his furniture and same can be found in a number of fine furniture magazines etc. He sold his furniture to a number of English gentry including The Duke of Bedford, Horace Walpole, the 6th baron of Craven, the 6th Earl of Coventry, the 1st Duke of Montagu and the 4th Duke of Bedford to name a few.

Another French ebeniste named Pierre Eloi Langlois also lived in paris around the same time, however it is not believed to be the same person. This Pierre Langlois was not believed to have worked in London.

Some authors of these articles believe that Pierre was possibly of Huguenot extraction. A Pierre Langlois was born in 1718 at the Church of the Savoye, London, (Familysearch.com) however it is not known if he is one and the same person. Research conducted by someone with links to the London Huguenot Society was not overly productive and was uanble to shed any light on Pierre's background. In fact I am not overly sure whether he was of Huguenot background. The only reason this was suggested was because of the many Huguenot refugees in London at this time and the similar type occupations these skilled migrants brought with them to London. The skills that Pierre Langlois had were quite unique at this particular point in time and it is believed his trade/apprenticeship was most likely undertaken under a master tradesman/craftsman the type of which were working in Paris in the early 1700's.

I do not also believe that Pierre Langlois came from the Channel Islands (where many Langlois names exist) as I have yet to find any link there.

I have searched high and wide on the new ancestry.com parish records from London, however the records for quite a few churches are still to be put on line. These churches include a few where French migrants were baptised, buried, married etc including St Clement Danes, London, St Martin in the Fields, London and a few other churches in the Westminster area of Western London.

If there are any persons out there who may be able to assist in any way or possibly point me in another direction where I may have some luck, I would be greatly indebted.

Regards

Michael Langlois

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Were your grandfather's parents Catholic or French citizens? If not, you may have problems with your research.

There is no civil registration in India per se, all registrations for foreign citizens - French, British, whereever - would have taken place through their Church (and then not Etat Civil) or through the various Embassies.

You may want to try the Oriental and India Office Collection in the British Library in Euston London. They have the largest repository of BMDs in the world for India in general, includin g a collection of Catholic records which cover a wide range of faiths, including Catholic so you may have some luck there.

But if your grandfather's family were of a local faith - Hindu, Muslim, Jain etc - the only records of his family would be local and may even never have been written down but passed on as part of the oral tradition of record keeping.

Perhaps if you posted a little more information about his religion etc it may help?

Re: Question about France Parish Records

Which period are you looking at? Today each family is issued with a Livret de famille on the birth of the child and in this are listed all the relevant pieces of family information.

Marriage is both a civil act in the Mairie (townhall) and afterwards there can also be a religious service.

During the revolution and early 1800's the notaire (lawyer) would draw up an agreement listing the spouse's details and these would often include information of uncles & grandparents.

Also during the revolution anyone pregnant had to go in front of the committee and register the details.

I hope this helps.
Sandra

If you know the date of a birth or marriage entry you can contact the local Mairie and they will often photocopy and post you a copy.

Question about France Parish Records

At this site I found an ancestor of someone I am doing genealogy for
http://www.servancnaute.fr/actes/

My question is for the Baptism record it shows Mother but no Father and on the
persons marriage record it also shows Mother but no Father.

I am wondering if this is because the person was born out of wedlock. He seems
to have his Mothers last name because I find records also of his Mother and her
Brother.

Does any one have any knowledge of France Parish Records that could spread some
insight on this.

Thank You
Tammy
tammymay21498@comcast.net
Re: Maximillian in Mexico

I also am looking for a source of information regarding French individuals who accompanied Maximillian to Mexico. My great grandmother (Ramona Diuperat) came to Mexico when she was still a teen with her parents. Her parents returned to France when Maximillian lost control in Mexico, but she stayed behind and married my great grandfather.

My great grandparents lived in San Cristobal de Ecatepec, a short distance from Mexico City on the road to Pachuca, Hidalgo. In fact, the exit to the pyramids at Teotihuacan on the new highway was constructed on the actual site where the family lived...and where my dad was born.

Rich Diaz
