I have two ancestors born in Dieppe:
Alan (Allan?) Bruce Allen b. 1867
and Marian Ethel Allen b. 1868
Their parents were Richard Collyns Allen, a clergyman, and Marian formerly Rippen.
Both children and their parents returned to the UK before the 1871 census
Can anyone tell me how to trace the birth registrations in Dieppe or otherwise add to my knowledge of this family
Thank you.
OK, final thoughts on this for the original query.

You need to check as to whether the Commune has changed since the birth date that you have. My commune was much much bigger back then and it has now been split into several smaller Communes that have themselves been adapted and amended so the records may be in a different Commune. As the record isn't online, I would write to the Mairie of the Commune concern and throw yourself on their mercy and ask them to do a search for you - also ask them if any of the records are missing at all.

Additionally, if you do decide to apprach the parish, be aware that in rural and semi-rural areas, parishes are often covered by one priest who may cover up to 8 parishes, which themselves may have changed over the years and what was in one parish then may not be the same parish now. And do not assume that the priest or anybody else will help, that does not always happen in France where genealogy can come quite low on the totem pole in rural areas.

The above only comes from years of practical, hands-on research in French country areas so hope it helps.

Regards

TonyF

That's the theory for sure but being France, it isn't always the way things are done. The split between Church and State, no matter how long ago, and subsequent laws means that things should be as you described but it still doesn't happen everywhere and there still can be significant gaps in the Dioscesan records.

I don't know whether you actually work at the Dioscesan or
Departementale Archives but in my experience there can be a whole lot of difference between what should happen and what actually does happen.

TonyF

I was under the impression that parish records post 1792 were completed in duplicate with one copy remaining at the church and the other being stored in the Diocesan Archives as opposed to the Departmental Archives. It is certainly true that pre 1792 parish records are held in the Departmental Archives and for Eure they are online.

Etats Civil have been a way of life in France since just before the Revolution and they remain the property of the State, not of the Church. The records in my Commune start in 1790 (they started a few years after the EC were implemented) so they pre-date the UK by some 40 years or so.

If the records of any Church exist they should/will by law be stored at the Archives Departementales tho in many instances the Church will still have the baptism marriage and death records that they would have been responsible for because of the division between the State and Church - basically, several/many Churches refused to hand them over. But births, marriages and deaths would/should be in the ADs, in this case in Evreaux OR in the Commune.

Protestante Temples covered huge areas so being rural doesn't necessarily prove Catholicism but it is highly likely, if you can't trace him at all, I would suggest the AD is your only bet and remember that many ADs do not provide look up or research services, they will send you a list of private researchers.

Alternatively you could look on the Web to see whether there is a genealogical association locally, when I was working at the Evreaux and Rouen ADs there was always a close link with local genealogical groups.

Regards

Tony Fuller
24220 Berbiguieres
France

I don't know the legal requirements about civil registration in France at that time. The churches would almost certainly be Catholic in such a rural area. I would expect that the church records from the time of civil registration would still be at the churches. Records of registration in British consulates are I believe only available from 1849. It must be very frustrating for you! I have similar blocks where I can't locate the French records due to not knowing the precise location.

I do so appreciate the trouble you have taken. I guess the real problem could be that he was born to a British father - we don't know the nationality of his mother. Maybe they did not actually register the birth, if it was not a legal necessity. Do you think I could explore the possibility of a baptism in a local church?
The pages you attached were very interesting, and I have still not totally discarded Charles Honore, as our Charles is sometimes shown as Charles H.
Linda
Gersey appears to be a very tiny village, part of the Illiers-l'Évêque commune and is just south of Evreux.
BMD for Eure are available online at
http://archives.cg27.fr/pleade/etatcivil
For Illiers-l'Évêque there are records from 1541 - 1862.
There are two sets of information for civil registrations - the 10 year indexes and the registrations themselves. A quick look in the index doesn't show anyone of that name though. The closest is a Charles Honore Porches - born 19 Feb. 1842. There are also 3 Prier births, but none a Charles nor in 1842. You may find that previously Gersey may have been part of a different commune than it is today.
Good luck!

There is no central registry for births in France tho what happens is that - usually/frequently - information about marriages and deaths, divorces etc are annotated on local birth records.

Do you know whether GERSEY is a commune with a consiel in its own right? If it is, you can ask the Mairie (Town Hall) for an extract from their Etats-Civil for the birth.

If it's not a commune in its own right, you need to identify which 'local authority' it fall under and ask them.

But, be aware the Mairie is not bound to send you a copy, if they do, it will be a kindness on their behalf.

Alternatively, you can approach the Archive Departementale for Eure and ask them as they are the repository for records in their Departemente. But, same thing applies, they are not bound to send you the information and they may refer you to a local genealogist/researcher/genealogical group, which you mau have to pay to get the information for you.

Regards

Tony Fuller
24220 Berbiguieres
France

Hello my name is Ruth Jones from Kingston Ontario Canada and I am trying to find my Grandmother's Great or GG Grandparents with the above names over the years I have been told they came from France and Germany. They apparently fled to Scotland when there was an uprising mid to late 1700's. The Grandmother being the French last name and the Granfather being the German last name. There are Dukes and Ducheses in their Families and came from money and when they arrived in Scotland they changed the name to Brown. His first name could have been Johann as first sons are called John. If anyone understands this and can help or tell me where to look all I know is my GGrandfather was William Brown and his Father was James Brown a farmer in Scotland. Thanking you in advance I am Ruth Jones email nanajones71@hotmail.com Hope I can get some help.

Hello, I am researching a Louis Colivet (born 1837, Normandy, France) and his wife Justine/Augustine) Le Breuiller (born 1836, in France). They moved to Jersey, Channel Islands and had a son John/Jean born in 1860. Louis later remarried a Josephine ? (born 1844 in Portbail, Normandy).

Are there any Colivets in Normandy who have any information on John or Louis Colivet? There's a possibility the surname was Collivet but we're fairly sure the family moved from Normandy to Jersey in the mid-nineteenth century. Would love to hear if you have any information on this. Merci

Does anybody know of a Huguenot church near La Valette, Normandy in the late 1600's or around 1700? First question is which La Valette? (It just means Little Valley.) It is possible that it is the few houses called La Valette near Surville, Manche, Normandy but could be any La Valette.
In the Quakers Church minutes, the burial of Charles Francis TIMMONS, M.D. on 22-Jul-1754 lists his birthplace as La Valette, Normandy, France. I assume his French name would have been Timon. He is buried at the French Huguenot flax drying glenn near Edenderry, Ireland just down the Largan river from the French Huguenot linen weaving center at Lurgan.

Ray

Hi,

I'm trying to find information on Godfrey/Godegrand Abraham(Desmarets) (1620-1665) and Denise Fleury (1620-?), parents of Marguerite Abraham. They lived in St-Eustache, Ile-de-France, Paris. However, I'm wondering if Godfray Abraham is connected to the Desmarais/Desmarets or Abraham families in Normandy. I haven't been able to trace his parents, and as far as I know, his origins are unknown. Also, why would the surname 'Desmarets' be omitted from certain records? In most sources he is listed as Godfrey Abraham with no mention of Desmarets.

Thanks you,

Caroline Nadeau

Colonel Richard Pattinson - Heligoland - obituary

Colonel Richard Pattinson was the Lieutenant-Governor of Heligoland from 1857-1863. On 2 August 1875, he died at his daughter’s residence, Miss Eleanor Rose Pattinson, at Sonic. His residence was then at Le Havre. Can anyone supply a newspaper reference of this even? Can someone find a cemetery record in Sonic or Le Havre? The family were Protestants (Anglican?).

I might have some info for you. I show a passenger list with what appears to be your grandfather at age 10 coming into NY with his brother Raoul and mother Augustine on June 10, 1911. I lost track of Edward but Raoul appears on the 1920 Federal Census in Mo. Augustine remarried.
