The British Hospital is today in Levallois-Perret. On the other side of the street is Neuilly sur Seine

The American Hospital is in Neuilly sur Seine

You should find somebody who could go to the "archives municipales" of Levallois Perret and obtain a copy of the death record. Maybe also ask the "services des cimetières" in order to know if there is a grave

I would love some more info on my great aunt who was a nurse in a British hospital on "Nenelly" according to the Hastings newspaper, I think this must be Neuilly in Paris. Ann Sophia Shearly born Brighton, sussex 1881 appears to have been taking part in a fire drill and on her turn to go through a canvas shoot from a window above the canvas split and she fell and hit the ground and died a few days later on 18/8/04, She was burried in grounds adjacent to the hospital, her family couldn't attend, I would love to find out more and know where she is burried and what hospital it might be? thanks

We do know that a David Glasberg with possible brother Maurice was born turn of 19th century. He had children Paul, Rachael and Henry. Paul and Henry died bachelors, Rachael had a Daughter Dee Dee. Rosa was born 28-2-1889 in brussels. She had a brother Isidor and another sister, Henrietta (my grandmother). I have all the info about the brother and sister but nothing much on Rosa. At some stage she went to live in paris as did her brother and sister, possibly in the early 1900's.Rosa was married twice. Her second husband was french and I am not sure if she came from brussels already married to the first one. Her first husband was ISIDORE EBERS. Rosa divorced from this man and married a PAUL-FAVRE-FELIX. I am trying to find out if she had any children although I think not.

Perhaps someone maybe able to look on ancestry.com for me to see if any of these names come up. Any and all help on this really much appreciated.

Carol Orr/NZ

P.S.
Hi Everyone.
My name is Lisa, and I live in Melbourne Australia.
I am trying to trace my French heritage. My Great Great Grandfather was Louis Marchal. I believe he was born in Paris in 1853 and was married Annie Chalchal. They had one son, Albert Louis Marchal, born in Paris, March 15th 1885. Sometime after the birth of Albert, I believe around 1892, they emigrated to London. I think Louis passed away in Middlesex in 1896.
As I cannot understand anything written in Frence, I would love it if someone could help me with any more details regarding Louis Marchal, ie, Marriage, his parents names and if he had any brothers and sisters.
Looking forward to any replies.
Regards, Lisa
You could try searching the commune you know the wife comes from. Archives for the Seine et Marne region can be found here:

http://archives.seine-et-marne.fr/front/go.do?pid=page_11958...

You need to click on 'etat civil' and then enter the commune, Coulomiers, and go from there.

Typically in France couples get married in the bride's parish.

The archives for this area outside Paris are online at:
http://www.archives94.fr/consultation/eta/search-form.html

The admin region is called Val de Marne. The commune for the Manby Iron Works is Charenton-le-Pont. I've had a quick look at the Table (like an index) for around 1829, and I can't see any Pickerings.

If your Pickrings married in the British Embassy chapel in Paris, then they no doubt had a civil marriage at a Town Hall somewhere in the vicinity to comply with French law. I don't think they would have married at the Paris Embassy chapel if they had been in Rouen, there would have been an English church far nearer. But who knows.

We've already shared some info on our common ancestor - John Pickering.

I searched the English census records and found two other Pickerings with children born in France at the same time - they are both iron moulders.

the info from Sue looks promising. Looks like lots of English iron workers went to France at this time. Rouen is on the Seine, and the Manby Wilson firm also ran river steamers along the Seine.
Hi
If her name is "Margette" and born in France... you will not find her. At the time first names were to be picked from an official list... Therefore, she may have been name Marguerite in her birth certificate. Note that Paris (if she was born in Paris intra-muros !) is divided into 20 arrondissements with civil records...
Gd

I'm looking for descendants of Antoine (Antoni) Szwarc, who was born on 14.12.1869 in Kruszwica, POLAND. He went to France. He lived probably in Paris. He had two daughters. I don't know their names. One of them had doughter MARGETTE who was born probably in 1931.

Krzysztof Szwarc

Hi

I have the same in my family - an Iron forger from Shropshire, James Davies, who married a French girl in the British Embassy chapel in 1826.

I've since found out a lot, and hope it might be of use to you.

In the early 1820s, Manby Wilson established an English iron foundry at Charenton-le-Pont, on the outskirts of Paris. He took over a large workforce of English workers, so your ancestor might have been one of them. (There was also a foundry at Chaillot (now in the 16e arondissement) but I'm not sure his exact involvement in that one.)

The Charenton-le-Pont archives are online so you could search to see if there was a civil marriage there, at the Town Hall (there no doubt would have been a civil ceremony in a town hall somewhere).

My ancestor ended up coming back to England 14 years later, as his wife died in 1836 (and I believe the foundry closed). Or at least his 4 children did, and they turn up on the English census of 1841 with their grandmother.

Hope that helps. The French archives are a great online source - I've managed to go through back 200 years of French ancestors! Different areas have different coverage, but this region outside Paris is online, although obviously you need to read French or find someone that does!

Hope that gives you a starting point!

Sue

Hi,
I'm reasearching John Pickering, who was an iron moulder born in Lancashire, England in 1808.

The first time he pops up is in the British Embassy Chapel in Paris in 1829, marrying a lady called Cesarine Moquet, whos father is listed as Henry Moquet. They are from Coullomiers, in Seine Et Marne.

What's bothering me is - What would an Iron Moulder from Lancashire be doing marrying a french lady in Paris?? The family legend is that it had something to do with a stone quarry!!

Anybody got any ideas what he was doing there??
Also, does anybody know any good starting places for tracing french ancestors, as i want to trace the Moquet's but have no idea where to start!!

any help would be WONDERFUL!

Thank you for all advise.
I feel that I will be out of luck finding a death certificate in Paris due to the fire. There would have been no one left in Paris to fill out the particulars in 1873 as her sister was then back in London.
My best bet will be the UK Register general. Also I have been going through all the Paris cemeteries without success.
Thanks again
Anne.

Anne,
As an afterthought in our own system British Nationals dying abroad since 1837 fall into that section of Overseas Deaths - if your forebears were working in Paris at the time of death despite local requirements I think this had to be reported to the Consulate or similar in that country. For example my Gt Uncle died in drowning accident in Hong Kong in 1909 his death was reported there but I obtained his Death Certificate from The Registrar General. It may be worth a try.
John

Hi Anne,
I have seen a few replies but, unless I have missed some, you haven't been given the real problem with Paris BMD's.

The original Paris archives and Law Courts were destroyed by fire in 1871 and most BMD's (actes) were lost. In 1872 a Law was passed requiring the population of Paris to reinstate their families' BMD's. The present Archives de Paris holds copies in microfiche form of any of the very few original records that were saved plus what they call the 'Reconstituted actes'.

In recent years I have spent 3 separate weeks in the Archives de Paris searching for the actes de naissance (birth), and baptisms, of my great grandfather and his sister without any success. I think that you are being very optimistic if you are in Paris for only two days. Unless it has changed during the last year or so the Archives are also closed on Monday mornings until 13.30.

If I can be of any further help please let me know.

Bob Refault,
Hampshire, England
Anne,
In the light of what you say I must have been mistaken for which I am very apologetic. However, the Archives de Paris 18 Boulevard Serurier, 75019 France near Porte de Lilas is the place you need to visit as they certainly have the detail on Microfilm. I may have confused the matter with archives on line and having checked Paris is not due until later in 2009. The site I suggested gives access to details taht the AdP holds. Soory to confuse!
John

Anne,
If you consult http://www.paris.fr you can access a map of Paris and you will find rue Dumont D'Urville lies between rue Gallie and rue la perouse in 16e arroundissement if you enter the name of the road with the number at the end you will find no.6 is the third property up the road on the RHS from Place des etats-unis. On the same site it is possible to access the Etat Civil and you can access deaths (deces) and put in a request for a Death Certificate (they are free)There are tables for ten year periods(les tables decenales) you will be asked for the period but as you have an actual date then this will made the search much easier. Good Luck

Help, where do I start this search?

Can anyone please give me some advise as to how I begin researching my GG Aunt who died in Paris. I have no idea how to begin or what to look at.

All that I know is that Anne Pyle, boarding school mistress at number 6 Rue Dumont D'Urville, Paris died there 15th December 1868. Her sister Maria Catharina Pyle seems to have been in Paris also and inherited her estate. I don't understand how or why they were in Paris.

The sisters were born at Dalmally Scotland and I have all the early details.

I would really like to know if I can get her death details or a death certificate and to find where she is burried.

I will be in Paris April next year but only for 2 days, a Sunday and Monday and trying to plan how to make the best use of that time, this is the main reason for the visit. To find a grave would be the ultimate!

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have been involved in genealogy for many years but this is a whole new area for me.

Thanks is adveance
Anne

Eugene Nowland in Paris France 1927

At the time of the death of his father, Captain Edward W. B. Nowland on 20 Apr 1927, Eugene Nowland is reported to have been of Paris, France in the obituary. I do not have a birth date for Eugene nor do I know where or when he died. He was a violin master, a concert promoter, a silent film director (he directed 11 films with two of those he wrote- he is listed on IMDB.com). The last film he did was released in 1918 and nothing after that. I am curious to know if Eugene died in France? If so, when? Did he marry? Did he have any children? Any information would be most helpful.

searching for historical directory of paris

i'm looking for an historical directory of paris - preferably online? kinda like historicaldirectories.org, but for paris, france, for approx 1880. my greatgrandfather was a watchmaker in brighton (lawson & son), but we've seen several references to the business as being in paris and i'd like to get my hands on a directory to confirm/deny.
thanks.
