I am in search of Celestina Bernier, born c. 1825 in the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France and married to Juan Francisco Pujols of Catalunya, Spain. They both travelled to Puerto Rico where they had at least one daughter, Cecilia Pujols Bernier in 1847. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me either through this board, or privately at Larroyo1944@verizon.net, or arroyolynn@aol.com

Thank you very much in advance.
Lynn Troyansky Arroyo

Hello,
Here is your gg grandfather's death certificate: Go to :

Herault ( departement) online archives
http://archives.herault.fr/archives-en-ligne-328.html

The following is for the city of Sete ( Cette is old spelling

http://archives.herault.fr/sete~328.html
On right, you will see a list :Go to page 2 and down to where it is listed " Décès 1874-1874) click on the eye on far right. When the visualiser comes on, go to page 4, acte number 11 is your gg grandfather's death certificate. It takes a few moments to clear and you can print it out.

1884 and the third of january at ten o'clock in the morning, death acte od David DAVIES, seaman on the English Rambler who died the 31st of december on bord.Certified by the docteur designated by the police. Aged 42 years, born in Aberayon (England) English subject. No other information.
Follows the witnesses who signed for the acte.
It does not say if he was buried there or not.
So , on the following link, you havea yahoo group for genealogy in that area. You could join the group and try to find help. I am sure there would be someone on the group who speaks English.

http://genea34.free.fr/

Regards
Rita

Hi I have posted this on the cemeteries board also. I am looking for confirmation that my g g grandad David Davies was buried at Cette. He died on board the Rambler ship December 1883 buried January 1884 together with Thomas Jones and John Davies. They had lit a fire in a bucket to keep warm and were overcome by the fumes. It had sailed from Liverpool and taken refuge in the storms at Cette. We have got a wonderful poem written in Welsh about their death courtesy of a member of Rootschat. They were from Aberarth and Aberaeron West Wales. Unfortunately I do not speak or read French (I wish I could)so really would appreciate help in finding David in the church records in Cette, I am not sure if there would be a headstone.
Many thanks

I am looking for Alfred Creissen born 11 11 1864 at Meanet Gard , married to Claudine Louise Eugenie Piano on 10 May 1891 in Paris. They had a son Alfred Frederick Creissen who married Therese Elise Prevost 21 sept 1912. I have reason to believe they were divorced and he married again in Belgium. This may only be a family story. I have no evidence

Any help in tracing their ancestors or descendants would be greatly appreciated

TO CORRECT VITAL DATA POSTED WITH THE PHOTO OF THE BROWN FAMILY ON 3 JUN 2008 @ 8:17 am
* Andrew Hallifax BROWN should be (SB) 1861 - 1919 (NOT 1841-1828 which are his father's dates)
* Margaret Ann BROWN SB 1866 - 1953 (not - 1963)
* Agnes Fordyce (BROWN) Mann SB 1872 - 1955 (not - 1966)
* Josephine "Phine" BROWN SB 1879 - 1956 (not - 1966)
* Margaret Lucia BROWN SB 1841 - 1925 (not - 1926)
Furthermore, the so called corrected dates were from the Brown Family Register which may have "real" errors and not "just" "typos"... My Apologies... SM

Suzannah: Thanks for your most informative email. I live in close proximity to Winterbourne and have often been in the cemetery there. My husband's family is affectionatly known as the Winterbourne Manns. Agnes Fordyce Brown (1872-I have her death date as Jan. 20, 1955). She married William Mann (my husband's grandfather). They had seven children. I knew five of them before they died.

Donna Mann

Further to my last message:
1. I said "I'd be in Caunes-Minervois two hours away" - which means two hours away from the apparent "seat" of the Lanphier family in France (ie: Nimes, Arles, etc.)
2. Also I think Eliza and Albert are cousins:
a) Eliza Frances Lanphier (1844-1882)
MARRIED
Albert Francis Gordon born 14 Apr 1841
& that he is the son of,
JOHN GORDON Jr.(1807-1893)
& FRANCES MARTIN(1813-1888)
& the grandson of
JOHN GORDON Sr.(1776-1863)
& ELIZABETH DAVIDSON(1776-1862)
b) Eliza Francis Lanphier (1844-1882) is the dau. of
JANE GORDON (1805-1881)
& THOMAS HALLIFAX LANPHIER (1811-1872) & gr-dau. of
JOHN GORDON Sr.(1776-1863)
& ELIZABETH DAVIDSON(1776-1862)

Margaret Lucia Lanphier (1841 - 1925)is my Gt. Gt. Grandmother through
Eliza Frances Brown (Gt. Grma) &
Barbara Bellamy (Grma).
The information I have indicates that Margaret Lucia had a sister Eliza Frances born August 1844. She married A.F. Gordon and they had 6 children - two boys: Thomas Hallifax born in 1866 who died in infancy(& his name might be spelled with one "l") and Henry (died age 4); and four girls: Jane Frances; Katherine; Louise (who also died and sadly when she was 2-1/2 years old) ; also Mary Christina Gordon born in 1879. Katherine & Mary died respectively in 1967 and 1968 as far as I know.
===========================================================
This photo was taken, I suppose, before 1919 when Andrew Hallifax apparently died. My Gt. Grma Eliza Frances (nee Brown) Bellamy, had arthritis and you can see it in her hands.
PHOTO: Brown Family group
Standing LtoR: "Ann, Eliza, Tom, Barb, Agnes, Andrew, Nell"
Sitting LtoR: "Gt. Grandpa Brown, Phine, Gt. Grandma Brown"
My interpretation of this is:
Margaret "Ann" Brown (1866-1963); Eliza Frances Bellamy (1864-1945); George Thomas "Tom" Brown (1869-1951); Barbara Catharine "Barb" Adamson (1882-1970); "Agnes" Fordyce Mann (1872-1966); "Andrew" Hallifax Brown (1840-1928); Ellen Isabella "Nell" Hardy (1876-1942); and SITTING: Andrew Brown (1840-1928); Josephine Jane "Phine" Brown (1879-1966); AND Margaret Lucia (nee Lanphier) Brown (1841-1926)

NOTE: Their other children Jane (Sep to Dec 1863); the twins Lucia Christina (Apr to Sep 1871)& Leah Catharine (Apr to Nov 1871); and Jemima Lucia (Dec 1872 to May 1876) sadly passed in infancy.

Dear Alison,
How wonderful to receive your reply. Thank you so much for filling in me in on our respective Grandmothers' oldest sister "Lou". Our Gt. Aunty Jean visited us in Victoria often.. and I've met "Bunny" too..I had many enjoyable days as a child playing dress up with some of her old gowns!
Ironically, my family will be heading to Caunes-Minervois, Languedoc-Roussillon, France for my son's wedding. We will be about 2 hours away and have rented a van and have three or four multi-lingual "in-laws" who would love to help look up genealogy info...Would you (or anyone else) have any idea where to start???
My mother, Jean (named in honour of our Grandmothers' sister Jean (Bellamy) Kelly, received several boxes of letters photos etc. when her father (Stewart Pringle) died.
Not much on the Lanphier's but a page with the lion on a striped shield... which might be this coat of arms?
Would love to trade e-mails.. (hannazus@hotmail.com)
Regards,
Susan (nee Johnson) Milburn
PS - Did pic of the Bellamy girls turn out okay for you?
"Lou" with little "Barbie" on her lap (& B.B. looking mighty serious too!), your "Ett" standing with "Jean" in front of her and "Nan" on the right.

This message if for khannahk regarding Lucia Lanphier Bellamy. It seems we are related. My grandmother was Esther Greaves Hoy nee Bellamy. My father is her youngest son Francis (Frank) Douglas Hoy and I am his oldest of two daughters. Your grandmother must be Barbara Pringle nee Bellamy. Thanks for the information on Lucia. However she was buried in Hanna, Alberta. I have attached a picture taken of the back of her parent's tombstone in the Winterbourne Presbyterian Cemetery. I was contacted late last year by a descendant of Joseph Victor Robbs who said he married again and had a large family but that he never spoke to them about Lucia. They don't think there would be any record of her burial but suggested placing an ad in the local papers. But to date I haven't followed this up. I am self employed and super busy right now so haven't had time to do any research for the last while. I'm hoping to get back to it soon tho. Would you be interested in exchanging email addresses?

I have been actively researching the family for the last three to four years and have also done the Bellamys. My husband and I have been to Ireland every year for the last twelve years except for one and just this past year we drove up to Parkstown, Tipperary and looked up Lanphiers in the area. We spent a wonderful day with them and I am in regular contact with one of the daughters who now lives in Liverpool. They also knew about the family crest that was awarded to Thomas Lanphier by Betham of Ulster. To date I haven't been able to discover the reason why it was awarded to Thomas, only that he served in the 86th Regiment of Foot also known as The Royal County Down Regiment of Foot. Dad just recently gave me the sterling silver calling card tray bearing the family crest. He inherited it from his aunt Jean Kelly nee Bellamy. So I am positive that our Lanphiers that were in England originated in Ireland, but I haven't yet been able to pinpoint the exact lineage. There is so much information that I have - binders full - and if you're interested in any of it just let me know. Plus if you have any questions I might be able to answer please send them on. Well I have rattled on enough. Hope to hear from you. Cheers, Alison

Thank you for the information on Lucia. It would seem we are related. My grandmother was Esther Hoy nee Bellamy. Your grandmother would have been my great aunt Barb Pringle nee Bellamy. My father is Frank Hoy. I knew Lucia had died in Lone Butte but didn't know the exact cause, just that she was pregnant. I am forwarding a picture of the back side of her parent's tombstone that is in the Winterbourne cemetery. It states that she was interred in Hanna, Alberta. Someone who was a relative of Joseph Victor Robbs contacted me some time ago and said he later remarried and had a large family, but that he never spoke to them of Lucia. They don't think there is any record of her burial but suggested I contact the local papers, etc. To date I haven't had time to follow this up. I am self employed and right now super busy. I hope to get back to the family research soon tho. If you would be interested in exchanging email addresses I would be thrilled. I have been researching actively for some three years plus and have the Lanphier's back to 1760ish in Ireland. Still haven't been able to come up with the exact link between the English and Irish Lanphiers, but I am sure it's there somewhere. My husband and I have been to Ireland every year except one for the last 12 years and just this past year I set out to Tipperary to visit Parkstown and actually looked up the Lanphier's in the area. Had a grand day with them and it confirmed that we are definitely connected somehow. They also knew of the family crest awarded to Thomas Lanphier by Betham of Ulster. My father still has a sterling silver calling card tray with the crest engraved on it. He inherited from his aunt Jean Kelly nee Bellamy. So much more I could tell you if you don't already know much about the England Lanphiers.

Hi Belinda:

There is a city named La Grand-Combe in the Gard department (30) in Southern France in the Region of Languedoc-Roussillon. See this site http://www.geopatronyme.com/ for the distribution of the patronyme GANDIOL from 1891 to 1990 - most of the families named GANDIOL lived in the Gard Department. Have you also searched http://familysearch.org and http://search.geneanet.org

If you want to find some families in the Gard department (30) and wish to write to them (most preferably in French) go to http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/trouverunnom/RecherchePagesBlanche...
Type GANDIOL in the frame “Nom” and the number 30 in the frame “Departement ou Region”
Click on TROUVER - you’ll get 7 addresses.

Good luck!

Lucie

Hi

Unfortunately France did not have a centralised registration system. You will need to find out where your village is + then write in French to the Town Hall enclosing a stamped addressed envelope (there is a template on the internet for this if you put in a search). When friends go to France on vacation they bring me back French stamps so I can do this. Or you can find a French group on rootsweb or yahoo - there are heaps of them. It seems a bit daunting but with no centralisation of registration + not many departements (counties) on line it's not an easy job. Make a friend on a French site!

Suzanne

Perhaps, a small indication for the localization:
Paye Dome seem like much to "Puy de Dome."
Le Puy de Dome is a former volcano, and which gave its name to the department of "Puy de Dome" when creating french departments in 1790.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puy-de-D%C3%B4me
This department is in the region "Auvergne"

Meschette probably comes from Mechet.
The names of French origin ending by "ette" in North America often come from french names ending by "et".
For example: Blanchette in America / Blanchet in France

Jérôme

Would appreciate any information on the Meschette family of French Huguenots whom emigrated from France to the United States in the 1700s. Possible first name of emigrant is Frederick. This family is reported to have come from Languedoc or Paye de Dome. Name was "Americanized" to Meschutte/Meschutt. There is only one extended family bearing this name in the US.

I am very familiar with the Winterbourne area. My question is - did Thomas & Jane have two daughters OR only Margaret Lucia (1841 - 1925). Thanks, Donna

Devall (Languedoc-Roussillon)

I'm looking for anyone with the surname of Devall living in the Languedoc-Roussillon Region of France. I assume that they would primarily be within the Gard and Hérault departments around Montpellier and Nimes. My part migrated to New York State, most likely during the 16th or 17th Century. I know there were some in Ulster County (near New York City), but mine were mostly in Wayne and Ontario counties near Rochester. Right now, I'm trying to get beyond my 3rd great grandfather who was born in the early 1800s, close to the beginning of the U.S. Census. Therefore, any further research from there is few and far between. Both of his parents were born in New York though, so the apparent connection to France will be further than that point. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)
