Surnames: Kagan
Looking for descendants of Schmerk (Sam) Kagan. Originally from Oshmyany or Vilna in Lithuania/Belarus. Was a baker in Lourdes in 1940's. Went to Bronx, New York City in 1946 or 1947 to visit brothers Jacob and Abraham Kagan/Cohen.

Surnames: Kagan/Cohen and Birnholtz?
You mentioned the name Abraham Kagan/Cohen.

I've just discovered than an Abraham Kagan who became a Cohen was married to a Jennie who might have been the sister of my grandfather, last name Birnholtz. If that's not confusing, I don't know what is.

I do know that the Abraham Kagan/Cohen I speak of had two children named Leonard and Medelyn, both still living.

Dear K Solomon,

I received your message a couple of days ago. My posting was in 1999, that is quite a while ago. Since that time I have found some information on that side (paternal) of my family. My grandfather, Yankel/Jacob/Yaakov Kagan/Cohen was the son of Menachem Mendel kagan and Sarah Bornstein. His brothers were Meyer and Schmerko. He had sisters Mina, Sonia and another whose name I do not know. Yankel and Meyer came to America, their name became Cohen (a common occurance). Mina and Schmerko went to France and remained Kagans, Mina married a man named Rabinovitz.

Now, Meyer had children, one of whom was named Abe or Abraham. Abe died in the mid 1990's and is buried in New Jersey. There were siblings: Phil, Louis, Eva and Nathan.

Does this connect with your Abe Cohen?

Regards, Linda

Don't know. There might still be a connection, depending on who this Abe or Abraham was married to. My interest was in his spouse. If named Jennie (Birnholtz) Cohen, that would be my grandfather's sister.

He is buried in the Cedar Park Cemetery "Odd Fellows" area, New Jersey, according to my late aunt who was his first cousin. The cemetery would have records. Sorry, I do not know his wife's name nor the names of his children. If you find out more, I'd love to know! I hate researching Cohens, there are even too many Abe Cohens! Good luck. Linda

Mark - My grandfather Abe Birnholtz died over 28 years ago, in 1975. Are you a Birnholtz?

Yes, that would be my grandfather, Abe Birnholtz, who died a little over 28 years ago, in 1975. What info might you have?
