I would like to learn about Rene Tujaque (female) who married Warren Reinhardt in the 1960's Warren was born in 1941 in New Orleans. It seems from reading postings that Rene was a male name so the Rene I am asking about may have had a longer name. I hope some of you can help with information. david

Thank you for the information on Hasparren and Cambo. They look like very beautiful places. I have found my Jean Baptiste Heguy. He was born at Hasparren on 21 May 1886 to Jean Heguy born 1857 at St Pee sur Nivelle and his wife Mathilde Daguerre born 1858 at Mouguerre. I cannot find Jean Baptiste Heguy's wife. She is listed as Jeannie M Larcebeau and was born 5 June 1889. When she comes to USA in 1907 she states on her record that she was born at Urcubrae but I cannot find a place that is named anything close to that. On her marriage in 1910 in Los Angeles, California she says she was born at Cambo, France. This record lists her parents as George Larcebeau and Marie Larralde. On her husband's naturalization , he says she was born Hasparren. I ordered the films from Hasparren and Cambo and I cannot find her born in either place. Do you know if Cambo means a town or a canton? Do you have any other ideas on how I could find her birthplace? Sadly I do not know French so this is very difficult for me to figure out. Thank you for any help or suggestions. Chris rcguida@q.com

I confirm that Jean DURRUA who died in Castel sarrasin was from DURAS, a town 75 km away according to GASCON surname usage. Your Jean DURRUA's Family came most probably from DURAS..the problem is to find his Family real Surname. You may have an inkling as to what it could be if you look at the Family's first names, if you look at the work they did.
DURRUA is not the original name.
Place names were often used for new arrivals (immigrants) to new lands or new towns in Gascony.
This is a very interesting name. In the span of more than 150 years the name is found in France with relative scarcity. It does indeed come from Tarn and Garonne from the twon of Lavardac.
I suspect that the surname, DURRUA, probably came from the town of Duras also in Tarn et Garonne. Could it be that a lady of Duras was called a "Durrua", the feminine form of Duras? This will need some some further investigation into the spoken gascon of the area.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I guess I will have to try and find the death certificate for the first John Pierre BACQUE who died in 1911 and maybe they at least have a more specific area in France where he came from. I will look again on the ship lists that I have access to and maybe find something there. If I do you may hear from me again.

Margaret

I can only trace my ancestors to my ggrandparents, who were French, not Basque. I have heard that Bacque and it's variations is a common name in the area and means one who keeps cows.

My late grandmother had a great niece who went to live in the 16th century stone farmhouse in Erce as an adult about 20 years ago, but unfortunately she does not speak or write English and I don't know French.

Hello Everyone!

The name "BACQUE" is found in this area of France that is the southwest part of France if it is not a deformation of the word "Basque".

You could try searching for the name in the Department of the Pyrenees Atlantique, Pau. We also find the surname in southwest France all along the Pyrenees Mountains including Bordeaux, Toulouse and more to the east, Perpignan. There are Baques here in the village where I live here in Gers.

Most Respectfully,

Jacques
My grandfather Joseph Bacque(1876 - 1938)came to the United States from Erce, France around the turn of the century. He married Julie Sentenat on 6-10-1906 in NYC. They moved to Vineland, NJ and their children were all born in Vineland. I am the only relative who moved to the west coast. I now live in San Rafael, CA. My grandfather Joseph Bacque's father is also Joseph Bacque, born in 1837, married Marie Anna Faur Pale, born in 1840.

I do not think my BACQUEs connect to yours. The BACQUEs of my family tree were situated in Gers, 150 Kms from Pays Basque, between 1740 and 1850. They never moved from that part of France. The name BACQUE is a very common name in South-West of France. But you can be sure that your John Marie (certainly Jean-Marie in Fench) was not basque. I could have lived in Pays Basque, but his name is french, not basque.
Sorry for my poor english, but I am french.

Hi. I came across your string of postings when doing a general search for "BACQUE". My husband's biological father was John Gilbert BACQUE. He never knew him as a child because his mother divorced and remarried and he was adopted by her second husband. We were lucky to relocate John BACQUE in about 2002. But unfortunately, he died in 2005. This is the information we were told by him and that I have confirmed by researching and finding census information:

John Gilbert BACQUE
b.26 May 1936 Oakland, California
Father: John Pierre BACQUE
Mother: Julia ALVAREZ

John Pierre BACQUE
b.4 February 1901 Albany, California
Father: John Marie BACQUE
Mother: Guadalupe TORRES

John Marie BACQUE
b. August 1852(from 1900 census) France
d. ca.1911 Livermore, Alameda, California

John G. BACQUE told us that his grandfather was French Basque. That was the only information he had. I have not been able to find any BACQUE'S nearby in any census. I have not found John Marie BACQUE prior to 1900(that I can be certain of). His immigration dates are 1875/1889 on two census's. John Marie also had a son named Prosper Torres BAQUE who was born in 1882 in Napa, California. Do you have any missing Johns who would connect to mine?

Thanks,
Margaret

I really enoyed your information re the Lubys. A Margaret luby/Looby married John Guidera/y in Co Tipp. Their children were baptised at the Ardfinnan Church between 1814-1833. Would love to get their marriage cert to find John's father's name.
We descend from another John Guidera/y who married Mary Fennesy and lived only 2mls away at Thomastown near Grange. Their children were also baptised in the Ardfinnan Church at a similar time.
It would be interesting to see if the Margaret Luby above could be connected to the 'teaching nuns' as the name is unusual. The convent may have them recorded among the early community.
From the International Genealogial Index- Germany, I found a Margaret Ernestine Henriette Luebe b.24 Feb 1774 Wehdem, Westfalen, Preussen and a
Margaretha Maria Lube b.about 1779, Hannover, Preussen.
Wd you pls send info on to me particularly about the early Guideras if you come across any?
We have an aunt Ida on our side of the family too, she was a daughter of Julie. Though I have to pull my notes to find out more for you. The person you want to talk to who keeps the Tujague/Fourcade side of the family tree is Emile Magende. He is my dad's cousin and lives in Harahan. He is the son of Marie Tujague, who was the granddaughter of Julie Fourcade. Can I share his phone number or contact info on this site. I didn't read the rules when I registered last night. The little info my dad said about Julie was that she only spoke French and would not talk to him in English so he had to speak French to her in growing up. Where is Euphrasie buried? Do you live in this area?

I probably don't know any more than you do about where our great grandmothers came from. I'm only guessing that they came from the Haute Pyrenees section of the Midi-Pyrenees Dept. My great grandmother, Euphrasie, who was 2 years older than Julie, arrived in New Orleans along with Julie aboard the SS Paris from Bordeaux on 13 Oct 1890. They both listed their occupation as milliner.

Euphrasie married Michel Ferrage in 1894. They had a son, Rene, in 1895. According to family legend, Michel was shot and killed by the NOPD, probably in 1896, in a case of mistaken identity. Euphrasie and her son returned to France. She and the boy later returned to New Orleans along with a third sister, Ida, via Le Havre and New York City, in 1897. (I may have mistakenly said in my previous post that Julie accompanied her on this trip.) Ida died in Dec 1927. Euphrasie married my great grandfather, Michael Quinn, in 1900. My grandmother was born a year later. At that time they lived at 3119 Dumaine St., New Orleans. Sometime before the 1920 census they moved to 1712 General Ogden St. (next to the protection levee, near the river, in the Carrolton section of New Orleans). She died in Feb 1937.

The last address I've found for Julie Fourcade Tujague (I have always assumed that the "g" (vice "q") was the result of an error on the part of an immigration clerk) was 1682 North Broad St., New Orleans. I found this in the 1910 census. She was a widow at the time.

Jim Jensen

Dear James, Apparently, this would mean we are relatives as Julie Fourcade was my great grandmother. It would be so nice to know more about where she came from and how she and Henri met. Where they settled in New Orleans and what type of business your grandmother and my grandmother were in. The name Tujague is actually spelled with a "g", as far as we know, but could have changed along the way to the current spelling. Julie Fourcade is actually buried in a New Orleans cemetery. Are you allowed to contact me via this post by email or phone? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks for what you provided so far.

Hello JBJenson120 -
I don't think we have a connection. Since during further research, I have come to confirm that Rien is a misspelling of my great grandmother's last name. Her name was Marie Anais Rieu, born near Oust in Southern France on December 10, 1860. There are a large number of Rieu's in the area, so I am very sure now about my great grandmother's last name.

Like your family with mulitple trips back and forth accross the Atlantic, I too have family that was born in the US then raised in France, then later came back to the US. In my case, it was usually back to New York and then later Chicago. I can't seem to trace any of my French family to New Orleans.

Good luck and happy hunting. Thank you for writing to me.

That's so funny about the names, another Erce researcher on this same thread sent me some info on the etymology of French patronyms, and what the names mean. My grandmother told me that after the First World War ended, when the men who survived came back to Erce, the cows were afraid of them and would only respond to the women, who had taken over the farms with their voluminous black skirts. I might be remembering differently but I seem to recall her telling me an amusing story about how her father had to hold up his wife's black skirt or put it on to get the cows to follow him.

Like you said, there are a ton of Bacques in the area, and who knows how many of them had their names edited when they arrived in America, to Bache, Bock, Bach, etc.

Your names and dates at least give me a starting point to do my own research and eliminate leads that don't pan out, so I'm grateful to have any info you can share with me.

Thank you for listing your grandfather's siblings. I don't see Anna there, so perhaps they were cousins? My grandmother told me years ago that French peasants pretty much stuck to a limited number of first names, hence the problems with determining if a particular Joseph Bacque is your ancestor.

Or, perhaps she just doesn't appear for one reason or another in your family history. I'm relying on my late grandmother's memory for all the info I have on Bacques and Servats; perhaps Pauline was also called Anna? Or a baptismal or saint's name?

While researching my maternal grandmother's siblings, I found a daughter who lived only a year that I'd never heard of before, and found no reference to a baby boy who died of pneumonia as an infant. So it's not all that precise on my end.

Are you pretty sure about Joseph Bacque's siblings and their dates?

I'd be happy to share with you any info I can dig up on my end.
The ship manifest is a little difficult to read because it is written by hand and there are cross-outs, but it seems to confirm that Joseph Bacque had been in America prior to this arrival at Ellis Island. Where the column heading says what year and for how long, it says 1907 and two years. It also says he had less than $50 in his pocket at the time of arrival, more like $20. Fascinating stuff. I think I may bite the bullet and rejoin Ancestry to see if I can find the date of his prior trip to America, around 1905.

If this gentleman is my grandmother's maternal uncle, that is a big breakthrough for my research! I am so thankful that you saw my post. Should you have any relevant data on the ancestors in Erce, and indeed anyone who has genealogical information, I would be so grateful to see it.

Thanks for replying.

Yes, that would be the correct Joseph Bacque. I have been able to confirm all of the information provided in the 1910 census.

The missing link is when did he first arrive in America?

We have observed that he traveled to America in 1908 but he was married in NYC in 1906. Conclusion therefore is that he traveled to America prior to 1906. But, we cannot find out when.

Thank you for your assistance in this search.

Ray

Yes I believe that is the correct Joseph Bache, but Nov. 4 1907 would be an expected return trip to America.

He married in NYC on June 10, 1906 and then they returned to France where they had their first child, my Aunt Marie Bacque. Aunt Marie never came to America as a child.

The issue is, Joseph Bache had to have arrived in NYC prior to his wedding date, and that is the date that I am unable to locate.

I did find his bride Julie Sentenat arrived in NYC prior to their wedding date. She appears to have initially traveled to America on January 4, 1904, went back to France and subsequently returned to America on June 13, 1908.

Their names appear on a 1910 census as living in NYC.

Thank you for looking into this for me.

Ray

I no longer have an active Ancestry account and cannot access the full databases, but on the US 1910 Federal Census, in New York State, there is an entry for a Joseph Bacque, age 34. If you can access the US census for 1910 you can find the original paper document and that will have the person's place of birth, age, occupation, current address and members of their household.

If this is your ancestor, would you let me know? thanks.

I did a search of the Ellis Island database, and there is a entry for a Josef Bacque of Erce, France, who arrived in New York City on Nov. 4, 1907 on La Gascogne, which sailed from Le Havre. It lists his marital status as married and the manifest line number as 0008.

If this is the same Joseph Bacque, it would make him 31 at the time of emigration.

Does this information match any that you have?

I do not know if it is the same person, but I have a Joseph Bacque from Erce in my family tree.

My grandmother, Maria Servat McGrath, was born in 1910 in Erce. Her parens were Jean-Pierre Servat and Anna Bacque. Anna had a brother named Joseph. That is the only information I have on my Bacque ancestors. Unfortunately my grandmother is deceased and I have never met or had contact with any of my relatives in France. I do not speak or read French, either, which makes tracing my family history much harder.

I would really love to find out if your Joseph Bacque is related to my Bacque forbears!

There is a website in France www.memorial-genweb.org where you can find war memorials in French villages with your relatives names inscribed. In Erce, there are six male Bacques inscribed on the village's WWI monument: Antoine, two Jean's, Jean Baptiste, Jean Pierre and Pierre.

Interestingly, my grandmother's great niece on the Servat side left her home in Lyons to move to the family farmhouse in Erce in the early 1990's and got a job in the village hall of records. She still lives in the area now with her husband and two kids; her first child was the first baby born in Erce in 60 years. Sadly, she has no interest in corresponding with her American cousins, so that avenue of information is cut off to me.

I would be very interested in any information you have on your grandfather, to see if there is a connection. My grandmother, who emigrated to NY in 1928, never mentioned any other relatives who emigrated to America besides her sister Justine (1926) and an aunt (1926 or earlier). These three women arrived in New York, lived in the West 40's and worked either in the restaurant business or as domestic servants to the wealthy. Many emigrants from Erce worked in French restaurants in Manhattan and they would gather on Sunday at a huge boulder near the Columbus Circle entrance to Central Park that they nicknamed the "Roc d'Erce" to share news from home.
