I needed to get back further than your dad to make the connection to the Eddletones in Calais.

I have two george Eddlestones - George Eddlestone born 25 June 1872 in Calais, the son of Frederick Eddlestone and Julianne de Wynter.

Frederick was born in Calais also - 29 Dec 1847, the son of Andrew Eddlestone and Sarah Taylor. Andrew was a laceworker - tulliste, indicating he operated a Leavers machine. He died in Calais in 1899 aged 91. He married Sarah Taylor in Dover in 1833 - Sarah wasn't born in Calais but had lived there with her family since ast least 1826. Her parents were Joseph Taylor and Anne Wheatley and she was one of eight children.

At the time of Sarah's death the family were living in rue Neuve in St Pierre. Sarah also had an Uncle George Taylor in Calais.

I have further detail of the family but am not sure what you need,

Gillian

Amelia De Boer, Gt Grandmother x 5, * c1798 St-Omer
My GtGrandfather x 5, William Hinds born 1789, Sixhills, Lincs was married to Amelia de Boar.

Amelia: Family tradition has it that an ancestor who was a soldier in the English-French wars married a French Countess named Amelia de Boar(perhaps de Boer or De Baugh) who was then disowned by her family. There is some truth in this story for it has been verified that William Hinds, a soldier with Wellington, married a lady named Amelia who was born in France; Amelia's surname and status, however, have not yet been established. No record of her marriage in Lincolnshire exists(fully indexed for this period) and so it appears that she was already married by the time the family are first recorded in Horsington(baptism of first known child, Sept 1823).From April 1821 until his discharge in May 1823 William's regiment was based in Ireland; prior to that(Sept 1818 to April 1821) in England but prior to that(July 1816 to Sept 1818) in Northern France. Listed as Amelia Hinds at the baptisms of her children at Horsington 1823-37.

1841 census: "Mildred Hinds" age 40-44 born "F"(Foreign Parts), living in Horsington with her husband and four children.
1851 census:"Emily Hines" age 53 born "France, Hare"(possibly Le Havre), living in Horsington with her husband, 4 children... Her husband died in 1851 and Horsington Vestry minutes record that she(and other members of the family) were granted relief out of "Herbige of the Road" money: she received 1 shilling on 15 Apr 1852, two shillings on 13 Mar 1853 and (as "Mill.Hines"), two shillings on 19 Jan 1854.
1861 census: "Amelia Hinds", widow aged 62, "employed in Agriculture", living in Horsington, born "France St Aumair". Buried as Emily Hines of Horsington age 77 according to the parish burial register(gives year of birth 1793).'

I am searching for more information on Amelia if anyone can help.

thx Josh.

Al,

My current thinking is that Richard HINGSTON's moves to France and back to England were most likely financially motivated -- he wanted a better life. Alas, he did not flourish after returning to England! His brother (my ancestor) was a blacksmith who emigrated to Canada and became a prosperous farmer after spending a few years working at his trade.

I hope that others with similar interests in the English in Boulogne will post information which would help shine a light on that particular time period.

Thank you for your kind comment about my tree. I am glad that others find it helpful.

Best wishes

Jane

Jane,

Thanks for your reply. What I find strange, is how the bootmakers all seemed to stick together in the early 1800’s, but I guess they all helped each other out.

I’m sorry to say that I have not been to Boulogne nor know of the reasons for the English moving over to work there – another line of research for when I get some spare time.

What we are looking for is RM’s father who came down from Scotland – but it is not easy looking for a specific MACKIE in Scotland without a specific birth town as there appears to be number of them born about the 1760’s.

Finally, thanks for the offer of the copy Registrations – but have been able to take copies from your impressive Ancestry Family Tree,

Regards,

Al
Thank you, Al! Richard MACKIE was witness to the registration of two HINGSTON births in Boulogne, 1829 and 1831. He signed his full name to the first and his surname to the second. I believe that Richard HINGSTON left Boulogne between 1835 and 1838. This assumption is based on the place of birth of the next two children, Boulogne and London respectively.

Have you visited Boulogne? Do you have any knowledge of the English population of Boulogne at that time? I would be happy to send a copy of the registrations if you are interested. Regards, Jane.

Jane,

Have just found your postings back in 2007 and whilst not much help in your research, thought I would say that I am glad that my great great great grandfather - Richard MACKIE, was able to help in being a witness to your HINGSTON birth!

For information, RM returned to his birth town - St Peter Port, Guernsey - between 1841 and 1851,

Regards,

Al
Hello Leonie,

Firstly Virginie Hemsley - she was born in Calais in 1837 and was the daughter of Joseph Hemsley and Marie Josephe Felicite Virginie Langlais ( I kid you not!) Joseph was the son of William Hemsley & Sarah Cameron - MJFV was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Langlais and Josephine Bougard.
And several of Joseph's family came to Australia in 1848.
I will look at the addresses for you tomorrow ( not on my computer)

Now - I only have one Joseph Fox on my records - what was your Joseph's father's name please?

I hope you do not mind, I have read your communications with great interest.

I too have a distant ancestor who apparently went from Nottingham to Calais with the lace. His name was Joseph Samuel Fox. I can find him in 1891 in England but he seems to vanish for the previous decade or so. He does fetch up with a wife and a few kids born in France but i cannot find any records.

His father was as bad. he married a lady called Virginia Hemsley who was described as born in France, british subject but again we can find no records.

What interested me most was the ddress of rue des quatre coins, calais as this same street has passed down through my family (as well as Virginia's "other" name Virginie le Beq for which we have no proof - maybe it was a nickname to do with having a big nose (le beq means the beak!!)

Lesley.

It has been a story in my family for many years but i amk struggling to find evidence.

Mine relates to Samuel Fox and his brother Joseph. We know Joseph later came back to England with a son Robert "bor in france". But we cannot find out what ahppened to Samuel until he appears with a 2nd wife.

We are told his 1st wife was Virginie (either lebegue, le beq or hensley) but can't find any BMD records for her not any record of their marriage. I have a death cert for Virginie fox (nee Hensley) but that is all!

Any help would be most welcome!

In the register 1873-1882 of Anzin, there are Lechien Alphonsine ( girl ) born in march 16th, 1882 and Lechien Angele ( girl ) born in 1879. I am not sure at 100% for the birth of Alphonsine. They may be cousins of your grandfather.

I am searching for information about the family of my great grandfather, Maurice Albert LeFranc, who was born in Calais around 1883. He was the only one of his siblings to immigrate to the United States. The rest stayed in France to the best of my knowledge. He had at least six siblings names Adolphine, Noel Auguste, Lucie, Julienne, Adolphe, and Jeanne Georgette. Their parents names were Noel Francois LeFranc and Louise Peant. I know there are other family members with the names Allain, Duquesne, Poisson, and Duquenoy but an not sure how they are related.

My father and his parents immigrated to the US in 1908 from Lens, France. His parents were Leon Duffroy and Nellie Camus Duffroy. I wonder if there are any relatives there still? Leon's father was Floreal Duffroy and his mother Marie Duffroy. They should be buried in Lens, I think. I saw photos of their gravestones when I was a child, but evidently they have been lost.

Any help will be appreciated.
