Tehui has a son name Pesa. Pesa is my Grandmother's Father.
I am looking for old man Tehui's complete Biography.

He was given a matai title name "Savea" in Fitiuta. Has anyone ever thought of the last name Havea (Savea). His shipped wrecked in the ocean of Fitiuta, Manu'a. His first wife was Tagavale. She had a son name Leui. Then he married Lagi Galea'i of Fitiuta.

He has a grave in Fitiuta with no tombstone. In order to have one ordered for him, we need to know his birth date and when he died. I am also looking for the year his ship wrecked in Fitiuta. It is very important that we all understand this poor Tahitian man's history. He was originated from Moorea, Tahiti.

A relative of ours visited Tahiti and came with his findings that Tehui is a royal person from the island of Moorea. Poor man, if he is that important in his island, we sure do not have any proof of his family existense now.

Thanks
My name is Ioana Uli from the village of Leone. My grandmother Pousilaleualesiomeleke was Pesa's daughter. Pousila Pesa and Timoa Mageo were the only children of Pesa and Siava of Taputimu/Fagatogo. My mother's name was Aveolelaomatasaua. Timoa has a son named Umaleava Mageo. He lives in Pago. My 2 brothers and 2 sisters have been vainly tried to reasearch the roots of our great great grandfather Tehui. I recalled from my grandmother that her grandfather was Tehui Havea from Moorea and Fitiuta (Aga'e) Manu'a. It is a coicidence to find out that Tehui held the title of Savea in Fitiuta, Manu'a. I still live in Leone and works at the American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA). It is with hope that I can gather more information on Tehui and any other family members that are alive and well in both Manu'a and Tutuila. Hope to hear from some Tehui family members soon.

God Bless!

No. I live in Moraga(near Oakland). What about you, where do you live? I have been trying to get the tahitian side in my tree but it is very hard to do any research on Ancestry as no documents are available. Looks like I'm going to have to do a research trip to see my realatives in Tahiti(twist my arm). Don't know if you're on Facebook but one of the Poroi's is on there and is one of my friends. I don't know how I'm related to her but she says we're cousins so..Please tell your brother Nina, Chuck and Therese say Hello!

And we are related through the Poroi side, I believe...I don't have my genealogy notes with me so from memory I believe my grandmother, Henrietta Sarah Poroi's sister, Delphine married John Chave. My name is Kathy. I have done some research on the Poroi. Do you live in Tahiti?

Charles Veeder in Tahiti

I am trying to solve a mystery. We (the Nantucket Historical Association) has a log kept by Susan Veeder on the Nauticon; we all love her story, and when someone asked when her husband, whaling Capt. Charles Veeder, died, we investigated. We have found that he left his ship (the William Gifford) in Tahiti (probably Papeete, since the US consul came on board), in May 1872. The consul wrote that Veeder "will remain at one of these islands with the native woman whom he had on board the vessel as his mistress." Since the ship's log records Veeder as "doing her laundry," he must have been in love.

But what happened to Veeder? We know he died in 1878 in the "Society Islands."

Would anyone have information or leads on other places to search? He's not mentioned in the Whalemen's shipping list. Is there a historical society or cemetery inscription project down there? I keep thinking there's probably more information someplace, if I just knew who to ask.

Thanks!

I checked the London Missionary Society microfilms
and in the Letters and Reports section for 1882, microfilm M52, folder 37, I found a group of letters from Ebenezer reporting the death of his wife, unnamed!, and baby son, and from Rev A Pearse confiming this and saying he had buried them.

They died on Huahine, not Tahiti, The baby appears`to have been born on May 28, 1882. She died 3 days later.

I took photocopies of the letters, and could scan them and send them to you if you contact me.

Later, on 4 August 1883, Ebenezer remarried to Blanche Clara Henry, gt granddaughter of Rev William Henry, original LMS missionary to Tahiti.
Christine
cliavaa@gmail.com
I have found or been given quite a bit of information about Ebenezer, I was hoping there might be someone in Tahiti on this board as it is Elizabeth Ann ALLANSON that particularly interests me.

We have found that his first wife Elizabeth Ann ALLANSON died between 1881 and 1885 on Tahiti. Also a child, Herbert COOPER was born and died in the same period so perhaps she died in childbirth.

Ebenezer remarried.

We have got confirmation from the consular indexes 1881-1885 that Elizabeth Ann COOPER died and also Herbert Cooper probably at the same time so perhaps in childbirth.

Ebenezer Vicessimus COOPER then appears to have remarried though not sure of full name of his bride.

He returned to London in 1891 then went to Tutuila in 1892

Still be grateful is anyone in the area can supply any more information on them.

Martin Briscoe
Fort William

Ebenezer Vicessimus and Elizabeth Ann COOPER

My family comes from Bolton in Lancashire. I have been looking today at a distant branch with probably connections to Samoa or Tahiti.

Elizabeth Ann ALLANSON (born near Bolton ABT 1855) appears to have married Ebenezer Vicessimus COOPER in 1880 in Bolton.

They cannot be found on the 1881/1891/1901 censuses but he seems to have died in Bolton in 1902.

Her mother emigrated in 1881 to the USA and her obituary records

"Her second daughter went to the South Sea Islands as a missionary after 2 years was called to her heavenly reward"

We found this reference

"On December 18, 1900, the chiefs of Tutuila congratulated U.S. President William McKinley on his re-election, and expressed their admiration for Governor Benjamin Franklin Tilley, saying "...you gave us a leader, a Governor, a High Chief, whom we have learned to love and respect." The Reverend Ebenezer Vicesimus Cooper of the London Missionary Society added his praise, writing that 'I cannot conceive of your finding a better man to represent your government in such delicate matters as must always be be associated with the task of 'annexing' than Commander Tilley.'"

Also (referring to Tutuila)

"In 1892 a new start was made when Ebenezer Vicesimus Cooper took up residence on the island...."

Another book has of Tahiti

"Mr Seville left in 1874, from ill-health, and for a time native pastors carried on the work; eventually Rev E V Cooper became the resident missionary and he still occupies the field"

So perhaps he went to Tahiti first after marrying then transferred to Tutuila.

I just wonder if anyone knows anything about them and particular where his wife died, which would probably be around 1882 or 1883.

Martin Briscoe
Fort William

This is a long shot I know, but would anyone know how to find details of a lady that died (possibly commited suicide) on a cruise in 1966 about 76years old. She had hurt her leg and become depressed. I know from her daughter her body was not bought back to England for burial
she came from Coolinge Farm in Kent her maiden name was Lynette Ida Muriel Lowe, married to John Austen Heritage.
Probably known as Muriel. Born 1889 Stroud Green
As far as I know she was buried in Tahiti, I have tried "deaths abroad" but found nothing, so here's hoping
all info gratefully received , many thanks
Marie

Manaia, is that date- 1830- the year of his birth or the year he arrived in Samoa?

If he arrived in Samoa abt 1830 he was probably crew on an American whaling ship, having gone on board in Tahiti.

There is a book Where the Whalers Went by Robert Langdon, which lists all the American whaling ships and the ports they went to with dates. If you checked the entries for Samoa or its sub-entries Manua, Tutuila, Swains Island etc
for a ship at the right period then check for the same ship previously being in Tahiti, you might have found the ship.

Then you could check the New England Whaling project films of whaling ship log books held in museums on the East coast of North America. These log books tell the story of each voyage. This procedure would take a long time, but you might find mention of him.
Christine

I just found this genealogy file and i was so excited because I am related to the Brothers family. My grand mother is Eva Brothers, daughter of Albert Brothers. Albert is one of Samuel Brothers sons.I don't know much about the Brothers family, only my great grand father was a captain of a ship long long time ago.
I would love to know more about my ancestors.

Hi Cathy, French registrations have been filmed by the Mormon Church, and can be ordered on film to a Mormon Family History Centre. But you have to know what district the event occurred in.

The districts on Tahiti island are, according to a French website;
Faaa;Papeete;Punaauia;Pirae;Mahina,and Paea

The films that are available are;

French Polynesia, Faaa (Tahiti)

French Polynesia, Faaa (Tahiti) - Civil registration
French Polynesia, Faaa (Tahiti) - Public records
............
French Polynesia, Papeete (Tahiti)

French Polynesia, Papeete (Tahiti) - Civil registration
French Polynesia, Papeete (Tahiti) - Probate records
..............
French Polynesia, Punaauia (Tahiti)

French Polynesia, Punaauia (Tahiti) - Civil registration
French Polynesia, Punaauia (Tahiti) - Public records
.............
French Polynesia, Pirae (Tahiti)

Notes Autrefois nommé Pare
French Polynesia, Pirae (Tahiti) - Civil registration
French Polynesia, Pirae (Tahiti) - Public records
..............
French Polynesia, Mahina (Tahiti)

References (See Also) French Polynesia, Orofara (Tahiti)

French Polynesia, Mahina (Tahiti) - Civil registration
French Polynesia, Mahina (Tahiti) - Public records
.................
French Polynesia, Paea (Tahiti)

French Polynesia, Paea (Tahiti) - Civil registration
French Polynesia, Paea (Tahiti) - Public records
............
French Polynesia, Orofara (Tahiti)
(
See Also) French Polynesia, Mahina (Tahiti)
Topics French Polynesia, Orofara (Tahiti) - Civil registration

There are also some other names of districts, which are probably also on Tahiti Island
Search under Tahiti in country search in the Library Catalog on www.Familysearch.org to get the full list.

I do not know which area Papeete Harbour would come under.

The article in question is 23 pages long, and I would rather not scan it as my copy of the book is falling to pieces, but it does contain a 2 page family tree which I would be willing to do.
Dear Chris,
Sorry I haven't been on line sooner - would love a copy of the article as the people you speak of are direct relations. Would you be able to scan such a document? Have found it very difficult to trace the Henrys and the Walkers once they got to Tahiti because I don;t speak French well although I can understand alot and I'm not sure where is the best place to look for such info. Am presently trying to track down a birth certificate for my motehr-in-law and the details of her father's death which was a boating accident in the harbour in Papeete. Any hints as to who to contact would be gratefully received.
Thanks Cathy

Hello Regine

Until recently I thought my g-g-grandfather, Alexander Hunter, Thomas's younger brother, was an only child. Imagine my suprise and delight when I found he had 10 brothers and sisters! Alexander was captain of the ELIZA and married an english woman Eliza Irvine from Kent. They had one child, Alexander, born in Papeete. A couple of years after the birth, baby Alexander and Eliza turn up in Proserpine, Qld as WILSON's. I can't find what happened to Alexander snr,or his ship. My family was brought up with the story that Alexander senior married a Tahitian princess. Eliza Irvine from Kent doesn't sound Tahitian to me! However reading Robin Stamps messages, your Thomas may have been the brother with the princess, possibly your direct line. Lucky you! I have found it pays to follow through with family stories as there is more then an element of truth in them. The book TAHITIENS, says Thomas Hunter had "numerous descendents" It also says the HUNTERS were a very respectable and well brought up family. The Dutch/Scandinavian families I know call their grandfather "OPA". Can you read french? I am struggling with the piece on PETER BROTHERSEN. It does mention TERTUARII HUNTER, CHARLOTTE HORLEY, and Thomas Hunter. Another piece on JAMES DEANE mentions MIRIAMA HUNTER spouse of ? I will have to get a correct translation. I am fascinated by all the Hunter connections, especially the Tahitian side, which unfortunately isn't my direct line. The 11 Hunter children's spouses were from Tahiti, England, Denmark, Sweden, France and Germany. The origin of the line is JOHN EDWARD HUNTER and SUSANNAH CHAPMAN married Sydney 1817.
I could scan you the relevant passages re your family. I will be in contact when/if I find more information. Please contact me direct if you wish.
brisbaneheather@hotmail.com
regards Heather

Hi Heather

So do you know whether there was another daughter besides Tetuarii, because I think that my grandmother's mother was a Hunter as well. I remember my mother telling me she only had one grandfather instead of two. This would make sense if Thomas had two daughters who married and had children and their children then married each other. (if that makes sense). I think that would make my grandfather and grandmother first cousins?!?! Also was Thomas also known as Opa? As this is the name everyone in the family calls him, they can't remember his real name. I have photos of him with Peter Brotherson and ?? Horley (husband of Miriama Hunter).
Let me know if any of this rings with you.
Kind regards
Regine
