I can't fine a SS number for him and he probably never applied for one - didn't need it. Yes, he did come to US during war. Germans occupied his home and sold everything, but lucky for him, when he returned, he was able to buy it all back (apparently the locals all had it is the story I've been told.) When my father was stationed in france & germany in 1945 immediately after the war he did go visit Uncle Forsythe and the home looked like he'd never left it. I don't know if he kept his passport up to date (renewed) when he kept traveling or not. It does expire after a period.

Hi

well....this morning I received 1 of my 2 my return stamped addressed envelopes back - this 1 from the Archives de Marseille...a quick translation of the underlined part of the preprinted letter being
'as per regulations of 1984 + 1995 you've either got to come yourself or nominate someone to come on your behalf, or get in touch with l'Associaton Généalogique 13 in Marseille'

Still I wrote to 2 places so there's still hope....

Hello,
As Mary coast said, you can have access to the death record, which has to be recorded in the town he died even if an American citizen. To be on the safe side though, I would include a copy -copies- of proof that you are related. I have found that some towns want a proof of family membership before giving out ny information under the 100 year law.
good luck
Rita

I wrote to Marseille - they quoted various legal reasons why they were unable to help me but this address was given for actes under 100 yrs

Direction de l'etat civile central
33, rue Jean-Francois Leca
13002 Marseille
tel 04 91 55 45 00

They would/could not help me but you might have more luck I guess you have more info on the death than I had

Anything after 01/07/1983 is still at the local Mairie

http://www.mairie-marseille.fr/vdm/cms/pid/488
Click on "acte de décès"
Etape 1 - information about who is asking;
your name adress etc, why (motif) you are asking
acte concerns .... info about your uncle
Etape 2 -validation
Etape 3 -obtention of asking number and end
If this doesn't work, on the left side of the page I see the address for the Marseille genalogical sociéty 13
Good Luck
Rita

I just re read your posts - why are you asking in Marseille? where did he die? if it was in St. jean Cap Ferret - you have to write to the addy that M. coast gave you.

Address : Archives Municipales - Hôtel de Ville 21 avenue Denis Séméria
06230 SAINT-JEAN-CAP-FERRAT

here is the link for the town's web page.
