Hi. Hope you still respond. I'm from Pa and I was given some info on my mom's side. The paper states--Johann Michael Abel, Johann Peter Abel, and Johann Stephan Abel were born and lived in Germany. Then, in 1754, George, the son of Johann Stephen and Anna Abel, came to america. He landed in Phila. and proceeded to York county. During the Revolutionary war, he enlisted in the German Regiment, the Hessian army. There was a Camp Security in York county during the R. war. And George was considered an enemy. He may have been a prisoner of war at that camp. hope you have more info. Thanks, Jane Keen

Concerning Ludwig Heinrich Abel/ Lewis Henry Abel of Wythe County, Virginia

Greetings Abel kindred, there has been some bad research going about for decades relating to Lewis Henry Abel married to Elizabeth Wampler who died in Wythe County, VA circa 1801.

It has been claimed that he is the son of Konrad Ludwig Abel and Eva Regina Boson/ Eva Regina Bojon of Vaihingen an der Enz, Württemberg. I have discovered evidence that in my opinion contradicts and disproves that entirely.

As far as I can tell, the origin of this Konrad Ludwig Abel and Eva Regina Boson business is the researcher Dr. Thomas Robert (Bob) Hopkins. He is descended from Peter Abel son of Lewis Henry Abel of Wythe County, VA. My grandmother a descendant of David Abel son of Lewis Henry Abel corresponded with him in the mid 1990s and received a packet of information from Bob Hopkins about our Abel ancestors.

The first page reads:

"
PREFACE
The first fully documented ancestor of this family is Ludwig Heinrich (Lewis Henry) Abel. Lewis was born in Germany and was brought to Philadelphia by his father. He is next found in old Fincastle Co. Virginia in 1773. Much is known of Lewis and it is believed that what follows is true and logical.
HISTORY
It is believed that the parents of Lewis Abel are Konrad Ludwig and Eva Regina Boson Abel.

Konrad and Eva Regina were both born in Wurttemberg, Germany. The Parish Records (1) of Wurttemberg indicate that Konrad was born about 1730 and Eva Regina Boson, on 5 March, 1730. They were married 3 January, 1749.

Konrad and Eva Regina had the following children:

(1) Christian Cunradin, born 25 February, 1750, married Marie Elizabeth Stockmayer prior to 1786 in Philadelphia. He died in Philadelphia ca 1790. Their children are unknown.
(2) Jakob was born 9 May, 1751 and died in Philadelphia in 1779.
(3) Ludwig Heinrich was born 9 September, 1752.
(4) Louise Regina , born 31 January, 1753.
(5) J. Dor, born 4 May, 1755 (female), died 10 May, 1760.
(6) Regina, born 25 February, 1757 and died 17--,1760.
(7&8) Chr. and Catharin, twins born 16 December, 1758 and died 18 December, 1758.

One day after the death of the twin children, Eva Regina the mother also died. It is believed that shortly after, in 1759, Konrad and the surviving children came to Philadelphia.

Konrad was a "dyer" by trade and was naturalized 8 September, 1764 in Philadelphia. Nothing further is known of the family except Lewis our ancestor.

Lewis migrated to Fincastle Co. Virginia and apparently took over 249 acres of land from the "Loyal Co.", either by being a squatter, or through purchase. (A value of Three Pounds/ 100 Acres had been placed on the Company's land by the courts). This land became a part of Montgomery Co. and later Wythe Co., Virginia. It is located on the South Fork of the Holston River joining Iron Mountain. Later, in 1783, Lewis purchased 225 acres on Reed Creek.

Lewis is next listed as "Louis Abell", a Private, in the Company of Captain Bosseron's Volunteers dated 27 October, 1778 to 17 December, 1779 and endorsed by General George Rogers Clark. He paid taxes in Montgomery Co. in 1782.
…
(1) Vaihingen Parish Records Wurttemberg, Germany"

Nowhere is evidence provided that directly links our Lewis Henry Abel who settled in Wythe County, VA to the Lewis Henry Abel born 9. September 1752 in Vaihingen. Nor is evidence provided linking Konrad Abel the dyer living in Philadelphia with the Konrad Abel of Vaihingen an der Enz. There is also no establishment of a link between our Lewis Henry Abel who settled in Wythe County, VA with Konrad Abel the dyer living in Philadelphia, PA. Bob Hopkins cites several records, but the records he cites does not establish that the people the records mention are the same people (with the exception of the Lewis Abel living in Fincastle, that is beyond a doubt our ancestor.)

I have discovered several sources that demonstrate the Abels (including the Ludwig Heinrich Abel and the Konrad Ludwig Abel) living in Vaihingen an der Enz, Württemberg are not our kindred and are separate people from the Konrad Abel living in Philadelphia and the Ludwig Heinrich Abel of Wythe County, VA.

First there is:
Ferdinan Friedrich Faber, Die Württembergischen Familien-Stiftunge: Siebentes Heft, (Stuttgart: Verlag von Franz Köhler, 1853), 81, 118.

http://books.google.com/books?id=VGoKAAAAIAAJ&printsec=f...

On page 81, there is a Conradin Ludwig Abel who was born 9. July 1718 in Stuttgart. He was an Oberamtmann (Superior Magistrate) in Vaihingen an der Enz. He married Eva Regina the daughter of Jacob Gottlieb Bojon 3. June 1749 in Vaihingen. She died 1758. He remarried 25. August 1772 in Biertigheim (Baden-Württemberg) to Dorothea Margareta the widow of Hanz the Bürgermeister of Marbach.
From his first marriage with Eva Regina Bojon four children are listed:
a. Christof Conrad
b. Jacob Friedrich
c. Ludwig Heinrich
d. Louise Regina (born 20. February 1754)
The lives of the first three are continued later on the same book.

On page 118 of the same book is Christof Conradin Abel who was born 25. February 1750. He was a landschafts consulent in Stuttgart. He married Marie Elisabeth the daughter of Friedrich Amandus Stockmayer on 3. September 1776. There are ten children listed as being born from this union. All are listed a being born in some city in Germany.

Also on page 118, is Jacob Friedrich Abel who was born in Vaihingen 9. May 1751. He died in 1829. He was a professor of philosophy at the Academy at Stuttgart. He married Luise Ros. Wilhelmina the daughter of Christian Gottlieb Schmid on 28. February 1786 at Schorndorf, Württemberg. He remarried on 22. November 1810 at Esslingen, Württemberg to Friedrike Beate Rieger.

Also on page 118, is Ludwig Heinrich Abel who was born 8. September 1752. He was an Amtmann in the Hochberg district of Württemberg, an Oberamtmann in Nagold, Württemberg, again in Möckmühl, Württemberg, and again in Münsingen, Württemberg. He married Jacob Amalie the daughter of Jacob Gottlieb Mörike on 12. July 1781at Ludwigsburg, Württemberg. From that union he had three children: Gottlieb Ludwig Abel born in Ludwigsburg (18. June 1782), Charlotte, and Carl.

From that book alone, there seems to be evidence enough that the Abels from Vaihingen did not come to America, and therefore cannot be our Abel ancestors. Bob Hopkins seems to have used the baptismal records from Vaihingen an der Enz, but did not check to see if the Abels from Vaihingen an der Enz stayed, led their lives, and died in Germany. That books seems a more reliable source of information than the research from Bob Hopkins.

There are more books that further add to the narrative of the Abels from Vaihingen an der Enz.

Verein für Hamburgische Geschichte, Mittheilungen (Hamburg: Verlag von W. Mauke Söhne, 1878), 141-144.

http://books.google.com/books?id=hSEPAAAAYAAJ&printsec=f...

On page 141 is a biography of Christoph Cunradin Abel of Vaihingen an der Enz, Württemberg. His career as a government official is noted

Julius von Hartmann, Schillers Jugendfreunde, (Stuttgart: Druck der Union Deutche Verlagsgesellschaft in Stuttgart, 1904), 95-96.

http://books.google.com/books?id=FM87AAAAMAAJ&printsec=f...

On page 95 in the above is written a subsection on Friedrich Schiller's professor Jacob Friedrich Abel. I have translated the first paragraph of that section:

"Quite a few of its best families Swabia received by the error of the counter-reformation from Austria. The Kerner, Hegel, Stockmayer, Mohl, Hauss, Reuss, Flattich, Hoffman, Hardegg come from Protestants who had abandoned their country rather than their beliefs. So also the Abels wandered at the end of the sixteenth century from Styria through Baden, and then come to a rest in the mid-seventeenth to Württemberg. Here spread the progeny in several branches of the diplomat and lawmaker Konradin Abel (1665-1735). One of his sons, Konrad Ludwig, was Oberamtmann and bailiff in Vaihingen an der Enz, the father of three sons: the Württemberg, later Hanseatic diplomat Konradin Christoph (1750-1823), our professor Jakob Friedrich and Ludwig Heinrich (1752-1819), who was chief magistrate in several districts of the country, including in Möchmühl, where Louise Franth wrote in 1805 to her brother Schiller: the Oberamtmann is a brother of Professor Abel in Tübingen and the latter will come this summer to visit this place."

This further shows that the Ludwig Heinrich Abel born 1752 at Vaihingen an der Enz stayed in Germany, and cannot be our ancestor.

This website:
http://www.martinszeller-verband.de/genealogie/getperson.php...

has Konrad Ludwig Abel as having died in Vaihingen an der Enz on 27. June 1796. I am not sure where the author gets the death date from, but they have death dates for Ludwig Heinrich Abel.

As for the Conrad Abel that is the dyer in Philadelphia there is evidence that he cannot be the Konrad Abel from Vaihingen.

http://immigrantservants.com/servant/show.php?servant=1016

This website has him arriving from London to Philadelphia in 1745.

This book further elaborates upon the life of Conrad Abel the Dyer:
http://books.google.com/books?id=c5FLAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA131&a...

It lists the children that appear in his will. There is not a Lewis Henry Abel listed; however, that does not necessarily mean. that he could not be his son. As sometimes children if they moved were already given their inheritance.

In my opinion, we do not know who Lewis Henry Abel of Wythe County, VA's parents.
I implore everyone to update their data and remove the birth date of 1752 from Lewis Henry Abel's profiles, as it is not his birth date. His parents were NOT Konrad Ludwig Abel and Eva Regina Bojon/Boson.
Greetings! I believe this person is my Great Aunt who I
never actually knew. If this is the correct person she
would have been born in Fernhurst, Sussex England about
1883. She moved to Salina, Kansas and studied languages
and graduated from the University of Kansas. She had a
relatively famous sister who was a professor of history
at Smith College and wrote a series of books called "Indian
Slave Holders" which are still used as textbooks today. I
was born in 1946 in Aberdeen, Washington. Ann is buried
in the cemetary in Montesano, Washington in a grave marked
ABEL. I hope I am correct. Tell me what you know...William
Abel

I have his birth as 1850 in Wurttemberg, Germany, and arrived in USA in 1855 at age 5. Then nothing until 1873 when he married in Iowa. I am tring to find parents, and any info from 1855 to 1873.

William is my great grandfather.

Hi Jerry,
In which Library did were you able to locate the report? It, at least documents his death, but it is quite inaccurate. The Obituary indicated that he was tapping a charge into a rock face and a spark ignited the dynamite. He was thrown quite a distance, and was critically injured. His one hand had been severed. I believe he died upon arrival at a hospital. He died December 2, 1891. The Mine or actually a quarry was located in the Northampton/Monroe County area. Looking closer at the details, it appears that they are two different individuals, because Henry Steiner of Easton, Pa., was 39 and had 3 children by this time, plus the baby on the way. Thanks for your efforts though, I appreciate it.
Denice
Re: Henry Sterner or Steiner and Elizabeth Abel

Hi Jerry,
I had been able to establish that Henry's surname was Steiner. By 1910, though, his son, Guy Steiner, decided to go by the name of Guy Sterner. It seems that due to multiple tragedies, that they decided to put it all behind them and both sides of the family then used Sterner from then on. It is also possible that Henry’s ancestors were originally Sterner’s themselves and the family decided to return to the use of Sterner, but the death of Henry and Elizabeth also losing a baby, plus her daughter, Virginia’s death between 1900 and 1910 from an oil lamp fire may have played a part in the decision.. I don’t think we will know until I can find definite proof of Henry’s parents, etc. Henry’s obituary was found in 2007, I believe, which gave his surname and the details of his unfortunate death. He was buried in the Hayes Cemetery in Easton. As of yet I have not found anything on Virginia’s death. I’d love to know of more information, about Henry or the family, if you have it. I don’t get back home to the Allentown area all that often and there is always so much research to accomplish when I do. Thanks for replying.
Dee
Hi

Yes they are the ones I found though not 100% they are the right ones, i found them on the census with one son Leonard, i know there was a Leonard and he lived in North Walsham in later years. Also am sure a brother died in ww2. I could only find grandad (Cecil) at Erpingham and a Percy. Other Abels I looked at had different mother maiden names. I remember grandad saying his father worked at Dunston Hall, Norwich for a while but not sure when that was or whether any children were born there. Guess more info would come to light if i saw birth certificates.

So you are an Ebbage?

Marie

Hi Marie,

I have found a Frederick James Abel marrying Frances Ethel Ebbage in Walsingham district in December quarter 1899. No births there but nearby lots of Abel births in Erpingham including Cecil (grandad?) in 1917.

Hope this helps and I will let you know if anything else turns up.

Hi Joe

Am at the beginning of my search and an amateur!! Unfortunately my mum does not know her grandparents names or all of my grandads siblings or any dates. Grandad was born in Erpingham in 1917. He had sisters Hilda and Lena (cannot find record of them) and a brother Leonard and others am sure. I know we took grandad to look at graves in Cromer many years ago but I can't remember if his mother was one of them.

I just found Ebbage who married a Frederick Abel and wondered if they are the ones. The 1901 census has them in Mitford with one child Leonard.

Not much information at all is it!

Many thanks

Marie

Hi Marieb59,
If you have any more details for the Ebbage mother (first name, area of Norfolk or rough dates) I can probably locate her for you and then perhaps your missing Abels.
Regards
Joe
Debbage/Ebbage GOONS 5504

You are my dad's cousin! That your dad carried your half-siblings' pictures in his wallet always reminds me so much of my grandfather (your dad's brother). My grandfather, Sidney Wiley Abel Jr. didn't speak of his family much, even to my father (his own son), though he did reveal a bit before he passed away. I'd always heard him refer to a brother named James. His sister, Annie Abel Shannon, he spoke of: she is still alive and is absolutely the sweetest lady (also reminds me of my grandfather!). Their father was Sidney Wiley Abel, Sr. (unsure of the Cecil reference). However, my grandfather (SW, Jr.) was always called "Pat" by my grandma and friends...we were always told that it was a nickname he acquired in the Army, but know now that he went by that name to differentiate his name from his father's. Ethel Little Abel was SW Abel Sr.'s wife.
The family has been a Macon, Bibb Co., Georgia established family since 1838 & I hear relatives are still in the area, but I don't know specifically who. My father (also born in Macon, GA) was an officer in the Marines & we've been in Texas most my life & know practically no extended family.
It is possible that Annie Abel Shannon could help locate your half-siblings. If you believe she may be able to help, I will definitely get you her contact information!
Hope to hear from you
