Replying to your queries.
There are thousands of blacks in the united states using
the name Abney. I have met a number of them in my travels.

As for photos of old English families - Consider that
photos were virtually unheard of before ab out 187- -
that would make it difficult for photos in England.
I do have paintings of Sir. William Abney, and much
later asome photos of the last Abney in England (William),
If you are interested send me an Email and we can
go from there.
My email is "djabney@shaw.ca"

I'm interested in the Abney's in England. Does anyone have pictures of any family members? Or any pictures of a picture, or drawings of any family there? I'm curious to know if any of my lineage look like any of them.
Also, I read that there was a rumor that there was black in the family way back. Would anyone know if that's true?
Thanks
Janet Shell Hartman

My grandfather is Fred Abney, grandson of Clem. From what he and my grandmother have told us Holden Ballard and his brother were taken in by Clem and his wife because they were abused. Holden married Kitty Clyde Adams sister to Fred's mother Geneva Adams (Geneva married Clem's son George). Clem had given Kitty a cow as a wedding present and told Holden it was Kitty's and that he was not to sell it. When Clem learned that he did sell it he went over and shot him. He turned himself in afterwards and was sent to the old prison in Frankfort. He was pardoned after he helped save lives when the Kentucky river flooded the prison. My grandmother says that he turned himself in in Estill county. He did move to Ohio for awhile but returned to Powell county before he died. He is buried at Kennon cemetery.

Okay, then your next step is to get in touch with your mother's sisters and other relatives for more information and order you mom's death certificate. I assume she is deceased. Try to get as much info as possible as soon as you can from living relatives - time is always of the essence before the living die. Next, find your family in the 1930 census, and go from there. I am sure we connect, but you will need to get back to the late 1700s and eearly 1800s. If you google your grandparent's names or great grandparent's names you may find something this way. Also, do a search on familysearch.com for marriage records, etc.

I hope this helps.

This is actually my first search. I don't know much about my mother's side of the family except for the information that I initially included. All I know is that my mother's sister's Francis and Sally resides in Washington, DC, and Lucille lives in Detroit. Her brothers Richard, Joe Ben, and Horace have passed away I believe. Other than that, I have no other resources to work from. My personal email is elmore.abney@gmail.com

I was wondering if any of you might have some information on William Wills, father of Elenor Wills who married John Dodd Walker. William was born around 1797 in South Carolina and moved to Louisiana then onto Texas. It sounds like most people think William is the son of Jones Wills, the son of Matthew. Any idea if this is true? Unable to discover who William's first wife is possibly Nancy. William remarried in 1847 to Dorcas Coleman Waite Summer.

I too am looking for Lizzie Mae Abney. She was my husband's maternal grandmother. I can find no records of her family and I don't know where else to look. You have given me some valuable info in this thread. I did not know where she was born although I did know where she died. We have visited Ramah when we come to Alabama as most of the family on both sides are buried there. All the info you have posted here is correct. Her last living child just passed away recently in Pike County. Would like to know if you have uncovered any other info. Thank you.

re John Abney and William De Abney.
It is unfortunate that precise dates are often impossible when trying to follow the family descent, but after many years of researching I believe that some guess work is necessary. I have studied the work of Pym Yeatman a very noted researcher and even his findings leave some doubts.
However, I believe that a realistic solution is possible, and if you would email me we can discuss the line.
I published a book on the Abneys - "The Abneys of England"
and you may call me at djabney@shaw.ca

A lot of references to William De Abney being the father of John Abney, but all of them show the father dying 5 years before the son's birth. I'm a novice so maybe there's something I'm missing, or do we just need to make an assumption one of the dates is wrong? If so, any other information to support that?

Thanks!

I am looking for info on Martha's birth listed as 1842- know that Paul Abney and Nancy Embry had child Patsy J also born in 1842. Not sure if they are the same. Martha is listed as a widow in 1870 censes but this may not be correct. The family story is that she never married. Also who then was the father of her children. Nancy is listed as her mother on death record but they list Nancy Little Abney who is her daughter. Nancy Little Abney is my Ggrandmother. Story was that Francis M Daugherty fathered some of her children. Any info or documentation would be great.
