Thomas Abraham B: 1782 Ireland D: 1855 Leek, Staffordshire, England

Seeking any information relating to my ancestor THOMAS (THOS) ABRAHAM who was born in Ireland (county unknown) around 1782. I believe he was Catholic.

I believe his father may also have been called Thomas, and possibly born about 1750 - these are not confirmed. It is the Irish connection I am seeking if you can assist, as I have information relating to 1840s onwards.

Thomas is shown on census information as living in Leek, Staffordshire, England - these start 1841. And he is shown as having children and being married to Anne (maiden name unknown as I cannot trace the marriage at this time).

Children:

Anne Abraham 1813

John Abraham 1816

Isabella Abraham 1818

Philip Abraham 1821

Edward Abraham 1828

Thomas Abraham 1832

Any help or information greatly appreciated as to the Irish connection, or guidance as to where to go for this information - still new at this genealogy business.

Many thanks.

Carol

I have just started to research my family history and have come across your posting. In it you talk about James Mckeown (1874) and his father Robert.

I believe this may be my great grandfather and his father.

Maria Abraham married Robert and you have asked if these Abrahams were Catholic. I am unable to provide any information on that side, but can advise that James and Robert were founding members of a Loyal Orange Lodge (LOL)

Any info you can supply would be fantastic!

Hello

Thanks for the psot - I am afraid there doesnt seem to be a connection that I am aware of to my family line - Harrison isnt a name I have come across (though we have Roberts and Elizabeths and of course John!

Our clan comes from Derryadd outside Lurgan in Co Armagh, which neighbours Down. Our clan seem to have settled and stayed in Derryadd for a good few generations - I found the deeds for a plot of land there to a John Abraham in 1691 - Thats about as far as I went although I have heard through family that the Abrahams came from Lincolnshire in England and it is interesting to note that the local landlords where the Abrahams settled in Derryadd came from there too, but I haven't been able to make any connection there yet.

My great grandfather left Derryadd and came south to Dublin in 1877 and started off a whole line of 'southern' catholic Abrahams so there could have been a John Abraham who came from Down and settled in Derryadd or left Derryadd and settled in down... its possible but I don't have that information and probably won't ever find that I am afraid - I have a little one year old girl now and my days of genealogy are postponed - at least until she is 21 and then I'll get back on the road (and into all those dusty libraries looking for connections)!

Good luck and sorry I wasnt able to help you with your search.

Good luck
Rachel Abraham

I was given a Hamilton tree with Unknown female marrying an Abraham. Familysearch and the census suggests this is Eliza Jane Hamilton (misspelled there as Flora Jane) and Harrison Abraham. Robert is one of Harrison's children.

There should be a brother John Abraham, brother of Harrison b abt 1830.

Eliza Jane's parents are Alexander Hamilton and Sarah who were said to have lived in Ballydougan, Co Down. Their son Alexander and wife Ann Wells definitely lived there.

Can you confirm the hamilton marriage and provide more information?

Yes - Robert Abraham is a common name all right and makes things difficult to track. Actually my Grand-uncle was a Robert Abrahama and then my Uncle and a couple of my dads first cousins in the UK are also roberts - it does make it easy though sometimes adds to the difficulty of doing these searches. You cant beat a census find though - love those!

Good luck with the search!

Hi there

Yes Robert Abraham and the first name sarah were/are common enough names in derryadd - have you ever been to Derryadd? Its just a small road with some houses on it and it amazes me to discover how many people around the world have traced their name back to this little small part of Northern Ireland! Actually through my search I have been looking to see where the abrahams came from originally - the eraliest Abraham I found mentioned in Derryadd was a John Abraham in 1670 I think it was - in the Brownlow leasebooks. The Brownlows were the landlords of the area who came from Lincolnshire in england. I met with my dads first cousins in england last year through this search and they had had closer links to my dad's grandfather (who left derryadd in 1877) Apparently they were told the Abrahams came from Lincolnshire! Interesting! I have just joined the Lincolnshire Family History Society online to see if anything comes up... I doubt it will but you know how this genealogy thing becomes an obcession!!!!

Good luck with the search!

Hi,

I'm another person with a Robert Abraham with a Derryadd/Derrytrasna/Ardomre connection in the family tree (quite remote connection). "My" Robert Abraham was born in 1876 (APPROX), married Elizabeth Philips and had 3 children,
Emma Jane,David and Harrison (makes it easy to track the family in the various census's!).

I don't think its the ame Robert you were trying to find info on as he is a few years too young (according to the census).

John

I have no idea if my line is related to yours or not. So many overlaps that is hard to tell.

My great grandfather was a John Abraham, born in 1875 to Robert Abraham and his wife Sarah (nee Burnie, I think) in Derryadd. John emigrated to Philadelphia in 1898. The seem to be Presbyterian. . .certainly they were once they got to America. . .once in the state, he married a woman, also born in Ireland, who was definitely Presbyterian.

All I know about my great-grandfather's family is his parents' names. And Robert Abraham in Derryadd could be any one of about 5 different people, it seems. :-)

Hi Kara

Just had a quick look there at your info and the following:
hanna 12-04-1860
william john 25-04-1859
margaret ann?
elizabeth 1870-1953 m john castles(does he connect to the castle side im researching???/)
deborah?
Are all children of Mary Castles and Edward Abraham - that info is in the email I just sent you so that should tie that up that query for you. As far as I know their siblings then are:
robert james b09-04-1867 lurgan
edward 26-04-1869 d1947
thomas 03-07-1871
although my date for Robert James isnt right and I know nothing of Thomas - do you?
I presume that as ye are descended from William John (I only had him down as william) that ye were aware of the connection to Ian Paisley through his wife eileen castles? Thats also in what I posted to you. Its funny though because through my mothers side we are/were related to Charles Haughey - thats two very different sides of the scale altogether. I have enjoyed discovering that in my family there were Church of Ireland, Catholics, Fenian Supporters and RIC constables etc - it makes the history books far more relevant to me and it has broadened my horizons and perspective a lot.

Well better go,
Rachel
Hi Kara
Yes I was online for the 1911 census and I got the 1901 one in the National Archives in Dublin - I think that is going online also. Griffiths evaluation is also great - its available on askaboutireland.com I think is the address.

Speaking of email addresses - could you email me yours so I can pass on the contact details for those other people I know who have castle ancestry in Derryadd? I would prefer to do it that way if possible. I could also attach the pic of Mary castles and her husband Edward Abraham and daughter deborah then also.

thanks for the info - I had a quick look there and it looks like Do you have any idea who sarah and edward abraham,s parents were? I got on the wedding cert of Edward and Mary castles that edwards dad was a john castles (deryadd) - I would love to know more if there was more to find, ie about their parents and or siblings!!

Rachel
