Hi joanshnnn
The name has had quite a chequered history, the most popular explanation is that the Gaelic/Celtic name was Mac An Bhreitheamham meaning Son of the Judge, it has been anglicised over the years, my Grandfather was Thomas Abraham but when his brothers were born in England the name became Habron, I have relatives in the US whose name became Hebron.
Abraham, Abrams, and Judge are all possible relations. The oldest ancestor so far Is George Abraham whose son Thomas was born in 1818 and married Nora Sheridan. I have no siblings for Thomas but it may be from that generation that your family descended, we may be related somewhere who knows. Good luck anyway.
Howard

Hi
I was down in the Dunmore / Quinaltagh area last week and met some Abraham people who mentioned your family. My mother's family was Abrams and left the Dunmore area in 1870. They moved to Manchester then Cheshire and London. There were lots of Johns, Patricks and Thomases. They were known as Abram in Ireland.

Hi Trish Maragret,

I have just seen the post where you ask about names. George Washington Searles Dougherty was named Searles after his Aunt Martha's husband William Searles. William must have served in the civil war and they asked that the names George Washington be added. Violet Steven Bogue Millar is named after the vicar. Though actually she is registered as Margaret after her mother but christened & known as Violet. All three youngest Dougherty's came out to NZ though Violet only came out with her daughters family in the late 70s.

Hello Wendy! I am Daisy's grandaughter. My grandmother Daisy(Margaret)Clarkson had three children, Robert, William(Billy) and Janette. Janette was my mother. I've been doing some family research too. I have actually been to the cemetery where Robert & Catherine Abram, along with their daughter Wilhemina are buried. I also visited the graves of your grandparents, Samuel& Doris. I can see there are several of our ancestors in the Ulster Covenant. I was wondering about Violet's name-Catherine's sister. Is there some significance to them? She has several. Also, brother George...why is his second name Washington? Perhaps we can share info with one another?

Hi WendyB,

I have left messages for fulloffun 121. Catherine Colhoun Dougherty was my mothers aunt. My mother is one of the few Dougherty cousins of her generation still alive. I have a copy of Kate's marriage certificate (m 25 Aug 1908 Crossroads Presbyterian Church). I know "Aunt Kate" had 3 daughters & 2 sons. Oldest dau Daisy b c1910 at Creevagh. Wilemena b 1912 probably born Ireland. I think Wilemena was born after her father Robert George Abram had left for Canada.

I am fleshing out the bones of my Dougherty family history so have just joined ancestry.ca recently. I jave been a member before (2005-2006) researching Kate's Aunt Martha Dougherty who married Searles, lived in LeHigh Pennsylvania.

Thanks Terry, I think that makes me your great aunt?? The ancestry thing is mind numbing, it takes hours to get a tiny bit of info but it seems like you have done quite a bit. I would love to have a copy of your Otter Tail history. I was looking in my Dad's wallet (I have kept it intact for 36 years) and noticed he had a written down a name and phone number for Ester Davis. I'm pretty sure she came to my house for the memorial service. That is so interesting about being servants to Czar Nicholas, I guess they were lucky to have migrated to Poland before the gruesome end of the family. I plan to visit Poland with my sister Mary next year. Any other info would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Ruth Cotner

Ruth,
If ferdinand abram and elizabeth wolfschlager-abram ring a bell, than we are on the right track. They supposedly were servants to the czar nicholas of russia, then migrated to poland. My grandfather was mike abram who had two sons, ralph and Terry, and a daughter names Nora. I have a history of ottertail county that I need to look at again, but I will let you know what it says. maybe that will help some.
My Abram ancestors go back to the early 1800s in northern Ireland. They go from (most recent to earliest) Robert Philip, of James Francis, of Arthur Francis, of Michael C., (all from the Ellsworth, ME, USA area) of John Abram born September 01,1820 in Northern Ireland. Would love to find John's parents if possible.

We might be cousins. My father, Alexander Rudolph Abram, had a brother Mike. If I remember he had a son named Terry. I only met them once back in around 1964 or so. My father's mother's name was Olga. We lived in California since my dad was about 30, he had a very hard youth and didn't talk much about it. I know they all came from Poland, actually called Russ-Poland and my father spoke German. He always thought he was German till my grandmother died and they listed her country of origin to be Poland.

Hello Tiffany

I am familiar with most of your family line. I can verify from Bazel Abrams and Martha Brown to Thomas. Jemima Friend is very possible, but there is no real confirmation to that. Henry is probably the father to Thomas. A recent DNA test supports a relationship, not necessarily father to son. There is no strong proof that Rhoda Spencer was his wife. I have seen the lines for Sidwell and earlier Henrys but I have never seen a source for that so I am reticent to include them.

I descend from Thomas. I am in contact with other members of your Basil family. You can contact me at abramsml@yahoo.com

Re: My Abram Family

I came into this world on 10th May 1971 and weighed in at 6 /6. I was born to my parents at home in Luton, Bedfordshire. Back then, my mum, Diane, wore her hair long and her skirts short and dad, Michael, thought he was one of the Dubliners.

My sister Rachel followed 2 years later - she was born in hospital at Chester, which was to be our permanent home.

My mum and was born in Bedfordshire in 1948. She had one sister Pamela Ann, seven years older than herself, a twin but Freda had died at 3 days old. Dad was born in August 1994, the only child of my grandparents Louis Bowers Abram and Delia Eileen Clarke.

Delia was the daughter of a Northamptonshire Police Sergeant, Albert Edward William Clarke who, on his retirement he was described as having an ‘exemplary character’.

Louis, was the second son of Joseph Charles Abram an Army Sergeant and Millicent May Bowers. Louis, was a Corporal in the Royal Air Force. He learnt to fly in a Tiger Moth at Sywell? but war broke out on the day he was due to take his test, so he never saw active combat. He later worked at Vauxhall Motors in Luton, retiring in 1970 after 25 years service having established ‘an excellent reputation in respect of loyalty, conscientiousness and timekeeping’.

Joseph Bowers Abram, the couples first son was born in Tempe, Pretoria, South Africa, in 1913, where Joseph Charles was stationed on army service. The child lived for 2 short months - he died of Enteritis and Heart failure and is buried in South Africa.

Joseph Charles served in the army from January 1901 to March 1922, receiving the 1914 Star, the British War Medal 1914 - 1918 and the Victory Medal 1914 - 1918 as well as being mentioned in Despatches on 30th December 1918.

On discharge, Joseph Charles Abram was involved in a number of projects. He built houses at Mears Ashby Road?, built Earls Barton Motors in the early 1930’s and ran Abrams buses which used to operate a small local service with trips to Wellingborough and back at weekends costing four pennies return. During the war the garage was used for repairing aircraft parts for Sywell aerodrome and in March 1943 the garage sustained a broken window when two Air Force Bombers collided and crashed.

Joseph Charles Abram was the son of Charles Abram and Emily Hutchings. They were married in 1880 and had many children, the youngest being Violet born in 1906, who lived to celebrate her 100th birthday in 2006. The family photo below shows show Charles and Emily with many of their children and grandchildren.

When asked about the photo in her 100th year, Violet, who can be seen in the photo, seated in front of her mother and father re-called a number of things. The photo was taken not long after Walter & Mabel's wedding and one of the brothers, George had come over from America to visit. The dress that Violet wore was of blue velvet.

Charlie Abram, my great grandfather, was not in the photo because he was in Africa serving in the war. She remembered that Charlie had been married prior to marrying my great grandmother Millicent May Bowers and that his first wife had been a ‘dark skinned lady’. Records show that Joseph’s first wife was Lucy Thompson, her father William was a Gardener and he mother Harriet, a Greengrocer. Joseph and Lucy married on 16th April 1916

Violet said she was about the same age as Gladys (Frank's daughter) but Gladys had died aged 29. She noticed that Theresa, who they called Sis, wasn't in the picture but she couldn't remember why and that Kit & Albert's son Sonny had also died young but was unsure at what age. Also, that there was at least 2 other siblings but that they had died - one was a female named Mary the other was a male but she did not know his name.

Although Charles and Emily stayed in England and Charlie and Millicent settled in England too after the war, many of the family emigrated to Australia. Violet re-called that Rose (Kathleen) was not in the photo as she was already in Australia, her and her husband, an Australian soldier, had left around 1919. Reg followed in approximately 1922 - 1923 and Louis, Bet-Martha & Violet left around Christmas 1924, arriving in Australia on 9th February 1925. They sailed aboard the Ship Esperance Bay on it's maiden voyage, which was later turned into a battle ship in the Second World War and sunk.

Violet was only seventeen at the time and is said to have travelled as Louis and Bet-Martha’s daughter. George didn't want them to go and had tried to convince them along with Charles, Emily & other family members to immigrate to America.

Emily my great grandmother and Violets mother, lived into her 90’s. She sent the photo below to her daughter Violet in Australia, on the back she had written ‘What do you think of a face like this at 90’?

My great great great grandfathers parents, were Joseph and Ann Abram (nee Cox). Joseph was a Shoemaker Journeyman born to Rebecca and James, in Rothwell in 1859. Joseph died aged 28. The death certificate shows he had been suffering from Phthisis Pulmonalis, known today as Tuberculosis, for 13 months. Ann subsequently married again, to William Maloney in 1869.

My Abram Family

Re: Abrams from Ireland? Or Germany?

Hello

My name is Abram too and I believe there is an Irish connection, by marriage in my family.

This is my family:

Dad - Michael Peter Abram

Grandfather - Louis Bowers Abram - m - Delia Eileen Clarke

Great Grandfather - Joseph Charles Abram - m - Millicent May Bowers (2nd wife)

Great Great Grandfather - Charles Abram - m - Emily Hutchings

Great Great Great Grandparents - Joseph Abram - m - Ann Cox

Joseph and Ann had children but I believe that Joseph died young and Ann Cox re-married a man called William Maloney from Ireland and had children with him also.

The Abram / Maloney family can be found living in Northamptonshire on the 1871 and 1881 census. Have not investigated what happened to them after that.

Toni Abram
http://centronuclear.org.uk

My name is Abram and I am also intersted to hear from anyone with information on the names Abram(s) and Abraham(s), in the UK and posibly Ireland.

My Abram ancestors come from the South of England and I would be very keen to hear from anyone else with ancestors from this part of the country. M research seems to indicate that the Abram family came from up North; Southport and Wigan (I believe there is a place called Abram in Wigan also), which strangely is the area my family live in now.

My father was born in Northamptonshire and his father Louis Bowers Abram was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk (1916). Joseph Charles Abram was my great grandfather and he was born in Northampton and Charles Abram my great great grandfather was born in Rothwell, Northamptonshire. My great great grandfather was Joseph Abram but I have no details abour him at present.

Toni Abram
