Acker/Aker/Akers connection to Hale

Update on my research of my Akers/Hale line.

A before unknown cousin was located who is the great granddaughter of Henry Hale a brother to John Hale, my great grandfather. She stated that her mother (Mary Quinn) always told her and her brother they were not really Hale. They were AKERS. Her mother told them an Aker was adopted either by Henry Hale or his father John Hale, my great great grandfather.

Any one know of an Akers that was taken in or adopted by a Hale family in KY, TN, or VA?

Thanks for any help.

John Hale

Acker Family of Canada and Michigan - Tuscola Co. and Detroit

Looking for the William Acker and Elizabeth Griffis family, with precious little information on the parents. William and Elizabeth had at least two children. Ezra, born 12 Sept 1864 in Tuscola Co., Michigan and Thomas, born 7 Oct 1868 (some records say 1870) in Canada, likely Toronto, but possibly elsewhere in Ontario or in Quebec. I'm unable to find the Ackers in either the US census or Canadian census until 1910, where I found Ezra in Tuscola Co. and 1900, where I found Thomas living in Detroit, MI. Thomas likely came to Michigan from Canada in 1895.

Ezra married Clara Martin in 1887 and had two children Esther and Ruby. Thomas married Jessie Miller in 1895 in Detroit and had at least three children: Percy, Adeline, and a baby boy that died at age 2 days.

I've only connected Ezra and Thomas as brothers because both listed William Acker and Elizabeth Griffis as their parents in the marriage records.

In the census records, Ezra and Thomas have listed their father William as being born in Germany, English Canada, and French Canada, and their mother being born in England and France. Ezra is always listed as being born in Michigan. Thomas has been listed as being born in both English Canada and French Canada, and his marriage affidavit states he was born in Toronto. Ezra's second marriage record states he was born in Indianfields Twp, Tuscola County, MI.

I have solid information on my GGrandmother (Ida Jane Acker Ross) (4/19/1859-8/25/1944) of Boggsville, PA; however, very little infomation on her parents. Her father Isaac Acker was born in New York (1820) and so was his father William Acker (1780). Isaac's mother Sarah L. was born in Connecticut around 1800. Her parents were of foreign birth. I found this information from Census primarily, but am now at a dead-end. Can anyone help with information or advice. Thank you, Marilynn

My wife Jean, is descended from Matilda via Mary, who married John BROWN, then Arthur L., then Charles A., then Arthur L., then Jean. I think that you are exactly the same number of generations. That would make you both 4th cousins. It seems that PDenby57 is also a cousin.

We lived in Somers until 2000 when we sold the house and moved to Fla. I take from your messages that you live somewhere near Peekskill, also.

Ed

Matilda and late husband have 8 people listed in 1850 Census with Matilda as head of household. No George or William. 2 Johns, John M., 9 Mar 1837, and John, 1843.

I have John M. d. 18 Apr. 1904, married to Josephine VAN VOORHIS, on 30 Apr 1869, d. 15 Sep 1911. 1900 Census says she had only 2 kids, both alive. One named Frederick, other I don't know.

Listing in 1850 is odd. There is an Abram ACKER b. 1818/1819. Next oldest is Mary H. b. 29 Nov 1834. Quite a gap in years. I have nothing on youngest John, b. 1843/44. He may be father to George & William but Matilda is his mother. Have you seen the 1850 Census?
Also, I have Matilda as a GANUNG. Problem is no records of that family have a Matilda. Any light anyone can add will help all of us.

BUT, source info is critical.

Wow! thanks! i have seen that before and had done the math as you said but wasnt sure if i was doing it right or if that would be the right way to go about connecting them. there is a "PDenby57" who i have had posts with in the past. (her last post to mine was feb of this year, not sure if you can see them or not) My great grandfather George and her Great Grandfather William were brothers, we knew "their" father was John, Married to Abby Smith, I knew Mitilda was "their" Mother but she sent me a post several weeks ago asking if I knew who their father was. I have only used LDS for birth indexing. I need to learn how to use it for this type of info. Im not sure if i can do it on line or do i have to go there to get an actual film? Thanks so much for confirming that was the same people. Now if i can only find my great grandmother prior to the age 15. thats my next hurdle!

Long story: 1840 Census Jonathan ACKER in Peekskill. Film M704_353 for town of Cortlandt (which incl. Peekskill) page 178, image 70. When you match the ages of family members to 1850 for Matilda ACKER, deduct kids in 1840 old enough by 1850 to leave home, the numbers match up.

1850 Census Matilda ACKER, has daughter Mary. John BROWN is 2 houses away. His obit has Mary ACKER as his first wife, eldest son, deceased, Arthur Lawrence. He is father, among others of Charles Augustus, who is father of Arther L. who is father of my wife, Jean.

OBIT is on LDS film 17853. Includes Pres. Ch, and Hillside Cem. Obit in Supts. book. Funeral by Meth. Epis. Ch.

Matilda is found on subsequent census living with son.

Now, my question. Who else is looking?

i was looking though my old post and there was someone else who was looking for this same line. He said he thought Mitilda's husband name was Johnathan. If he is right that would be the name you are looking for. I did send a post asking if he knew this for sure, and how he came to that name. So we'll see if he replies back. I guess for now, im still going to leave her husband, and the kids fathers as blank and try to search to see if i can actually tie him to this line. Any luck let me know.

I dont know. that is where i get stuck. their mothers name is Mitilda and in the 1850 census she was listed with what i believe to be 7 kids. I tried the 1840 census and came across a few ackers, but they only list age groups and how ever many there are in that group. Its frustrating once you have to go back that far. it makes it hard to put the family together after that. Maybe i just dont know how to read it. If you figure it out please let me know.

Hello, My gggg - George Acker, Ashton, WI came from Alsace-Lorraine to America around 1770's. The son named after the birth father or grandfather always carries the suffix first (I), second (II), etc..., OR Senior (SR) or Junior (Jr). Can any one tell me if the ACKER surname is Germanic or French origin? Is there a 'ACKER' coat of arms (crest)?

Barbara Seyerlein Acker Arnstein, Barvaria Germany and Paula and Marie Acker and family New Jersey and NY

Trying to locate cousins of ours, the Acker family. My grand aunt, Barbara Seyerlein, daughter of Stephen Seyerlein from Arnstein, Barvaria Germany, married a man name Acker and remained back in Germany as did her father, Stephen Seyerlein, while her mother and other Seyerlein siblings eventually all drifted over to the United States to live in Ridgewood, Brooklyn, New York. According to a note written by my Aunt Flo/ Florence Forster-Eschert in the 1950's, Barbara Acker had sons in Germany and two daughters Marie and Paula Acker living in New Jersey. We would very much like to locate these cousins or any cousins of ours remaining in Germany, to see what they know of the family.

Thanks so much,

Ann Forster

I have been researching this Acker family as my gggg grandmother was related to them. If anyone has Ancestry , I have the tree on there all the way back to Germany as this Acker family were Eckhardt originally. They came to New York in 1710 as Palatine immigrants and lived in Beekman Patent in Dutchess County New York before moving to Ontario after 1800.

Re: Alexander Acker - Scotland to Canada

I'm reading a letter written by Jessie T.F. Cochrane Aker she married Alexander Aker in 1907. soon after they were married they went to Lac Du Bonnett, near Winnipeg Manitoba, to a logging camp that winter, as my husband was a logger. In the spring of 1908 we came back to the railroad work. My husband's camp was at Macklin Saskatchewan. In the spring of 1909 my husband and Charlie Cameron put in all the culverts to Stettler, then did other railroad work. That Spring of 1909 we welcomed our first baby Reginald. Along in June, Mrs. Cameron and I went to join our husbands in camp. They had left us a team of horses and a democrat, so we got up early and loaded up. We made a comfortable place in the back for her three oldest children and a place to sleep if they wanted to. My baby is six weeks, so we took turns holding him and driving. When we got to Provost we drove into town and went to a grocery store. Leland simpson owned it and we bought a loaf of bread and salmon. We were camped by a slough, going west about where the dam is now. We the left the railroad between Metiskow and Czar and went to the Houcher ranch. They stayed there for three days and then set off for Hardisty where the men were waiting for them. They then went to stettler. The letter carries on about their travels. Then she writes: As we had started our family and it was a hardship living in tents with a baby, Alex and I took up homestead at Cadogan. We had a section of land we broke part for wheat and oats and left the rest for pasture for the cattle. We had to build a house and a barn which took time, but we had such wonderful neighbours. She then talks about how the neighbours and them would entertain themselves. Then she writes that the land was sandy and and tough times were had. 1918 they had a very bad storm that the hail broke every window in the house. The crop failures happened so much that they decided to give up farming and raise purebred horses and they did very well at it. They raised pigs, chickens, turkeys, and cattle. They also had a enormous vegetable garden. In 1912 everyone had a good crop and they all bought themselves new cars. In 1918 the flu hit and Alex and several good neighbours got hit with it. She talks about how horrible the flu was and talks about how her two oldest children would have to cut holes in the ice for cattle. She says that it was a horribly cold winter. In 1924 they moved to Provost Alberta four miles west and it was a big stone house with real good land for growing wheat. It was in February that they moved and their youngest son Douglas was 1 year old. The children went to Emerald school which was 2 1/2 miles south or fairy hill 2 miles north. They had 6 children all born in Cadogan, except Reginald in 1954 our youngest son Douglas got married and we left the farm and bought a house in Provost. We enjoyed it as it was main street right next to the post office. On June 13 1955 she lost her husband. she writes that both boys had their own farms and they had their families but would stop in to see her everyday. Three daughters were married and moved to the city Edmonton, and the fourth daughter Lillian had married and moved to the states. she says that they spent several winters with her and her family. In 1970 she took ill and moved to the Provost Nursing home. She later passed on January 7th 1971.
Reginald Aker would be my grandfather, I hope this helps I know that you would like to find more interesting facts about Alexander's parents. My cousin has all the research you need.

greetings from Nova Scotia

Hello Lisa
My name is Flora Rhodenizer and I am a direct descendant of Johann Adam Acker born Dec 4th,1722 in Osthofen, Palatinate Region, Bayern, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. He is my great grandfather 7 generations. I know he came over on "The Gale" in 1752 to Nova Scotia Canada with a female adult names Anna maria no last name with him - not sure whether she was his wife or not as I have a few days after landing that he and a Anna maria Catherine Hahn were married in Nova Scotia. This is as far as I have gotten. I would appreciate any assistance you or anyone else could give me in finding who either Johann Adam or Anna Maria catherine's parents and/or families are and where in germany they came from. Thank you for any info you are willing to offer me.

Flora Rhodenizer

I'm pretty sure the marriage info is in the Columbus Telegram. By 1902 both John and Pauline Stupfel were deceased. Mary is listed in the civil suit as a heir, sueing on behalf of John and Pualine (at least his second wife) sueing a man named Ernst.

ACKER FAMILY FROM NY

I am searching for members of the Acker family living in Schodack, Rensselaer, N.Y.area from 1723-1880. First names were Frederick, b.1862; Nelson b. 1838; William b. 1805; David Solomon b. 1785; Hendrick b. 1756. Nelson married Sarah Jane Gardiner. I can find only one child with them and that was Frederick. (Although some say Frederick was a Moe and was adopted by the Ackers.) Any help will be appreciated.

I came across a tin type photo & I am trying to find a descendent. I will attach a copy of the photo. On the back it reads, "Peter Acker father of Sarah J. Gorman." Of course, her name would have originally been Sarah Acker. Are these your descendent? I would estimate from Peter's suit & beard that photo is mid 1800s, he's either Pennsylvania Dutch or Holland, or European? Can you guide me? I have had my ancestry.com membership for 1 week & feel quite stupid!

tdpaul71
