Delilah Acton m. 1822 in Ross, Ohio

I am searching for a Delilah Acton who marries a (Daily Gaits per LDS site) Bailey Gates 18 July 1822 in Ross, Ohio. In the 1830 census of Ross, Ohio they are living 4 farms away from Jeremiah Acton.
Deliah and Bailey are recorded to have 4 sons per this census. One under age 5 and 3 ages 5-10. We believe they are Benjamin 1820, Henry b.c 1821-1824 and Jesse 1828 and Bailey 1834. Since Bailey was born after the 1830 census there had to have been another son. The dates don't exactly work but more research is needed.
Delilah doesn't seem to fit into any Acton research that I can find.

Re: Captain James Acton

It was possibly a militia title. We know it was used as a social title from a passage in William Byrd's diaries. He mentions meeting a "Colonel Randolph" on the road to Williamsburg. This was William Randolph the Immigrant, who never fought in a war, so it was a militia title.

James Acton is said to have opposed the Revolution at first, then changed his mind. There's a problem with the logistics of service. He would have been 30 in 1776, so a fit age to be an officer. My grandmother's DAR ancestor was about that age and showed up at Valley Forge. He was referred to as a Captain, so he may have had that rank at the time. But toward the end of the Revolution, the legislature stopped paying officers and the army disbanded. John Marshall was 18 and showed up as a Lieutenant at Valley Forge, but yy the end of the Revolution he was studying law in Williamsburg. So there was a narrow time frame for James to have obtained a commission and served.

There were officers rolls and pension records. But I haven't seen any documentation for his service.

Allen,

I know your message below is from 2004, but I thought I'd try and leave you a message anyway. My grandmother's maiden name was Duplaga and she was from Rzeszow, Poland. Are you Polish or Italian? Someone from Polish Forum told me this name might be of Italian origin. I just found out my grandfather's name DATA is of Italian origin. I guess there was a lot of Italian migration to Poland back in 1500's. There was an Italian Queen in Poland married to King Zygumt. Not sure of the spelling.

Appreciate any information you may have.

Thank you.

Cathy Maravegias
I have a James Acton/Actin (spelled Actin in the 1850 Cocke County, TN Census. He was b4-1775 Henry Co., VA died Oct 1849 Jackson Co., IL. He married Aug 19, 1822 Washington Co., TN to Celia (also seen as Zillah, Zilla) Bayles/Bayless. Celia was born Jan 23, 1804. I am stuck on her parents. Some posts have said Daniel and Sarah and others do not know, but I do not have any real evidence, so I am still looking.
The 1850 census as mentioned above lists the following:
Family #518
Actin, James 60, Celia 47, Martha 23 (my line), Martin 21, Elizabeth 19, Arty? 16, James M. 15, Priscilla and Albert (twins) 12, and Emeline 8 all born in TN.
Any ideas on the parents of Celia Bayless would be appreciated to momrnc@yahoo.com

I think that I have discovered a mistake that I made. In trying to put this family together, I think that I should not have included Joshua. I just realized that with the info I have he would have married at the age of 8 to a woman 20 years older than he. There must be either two people combined or the birth date should be much earlier which would eliminate him from this family.

We are in the process of moving (at the end of the month) and I just looked through all my genealogy papers as I packed them up a couple of days ago. I did find the Acton settlement papers, but they have been packed into a box that is already taped up and taken to storage until we get moved. I would be happy to make and send you a copy of them but unfortunately, I can't do it until after February 1.

If you want to e-mail me directly, we can figure out where to send them and compare other notes!

It appears that both James (Sr) and Elizabeth McCraft Acton died without a will and so the settlement papers are those of estate sale items. It's really interesting to see not only what they owned, but especially who participated in the sale. My 3ggrandfather, George Clouse, was one of the executors for Elizabeth's estate, I believe through his alleged marriage to their daughter Sarah (aka Sally). I have not been able to find documentation of this marriage, though I find it reported widely on internet postings. It would make sense that the marriage existed since he was one of the executors.

I will look forward to hearing from you!

Cathy Clouse Armstrong
armstrong2224@yahoo.com

James Sr. died in Garrard County, KY. I don't know about his burial spot, but I would guess they didn't transport a lot of bodies back then.

I do have a copy of the settlement papers for his estate, as well as for his wife Elizabeth.

I believe his son, James, went to Indiana and his son, John, went to Shelby Co, AL. Maybe that's who's buried there.

There was a book written on the Actons by Faye Acton Axford, who passed away a couple of years ago. I won't swear that's where I read this, but there is info floating in the recesses of my brain that James was actually a Tory sympathizer and was forced into taking the oath for the Patriots.

I have not done much genealogy work for the last 18 months or so, so I'm kind of foggy on it. But I know I have the info somewhere in the mass of papers that are packed into my desk!

Cathy Clouse Armstrong

Jim, I cannot give you a very definite answer to your question about the marriage date of James Acton. A very large percentage of my family information was collected by my parents many years ago. It appears that this information came in a letter to my dad from a Jack Acton in 1974. My folks are both deceased now so I cannot ask a lot of the questions that I have come up with since I became interested in the research which they had done. My mother was related to the Acton family through Sarah Jane Acton who married my great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Dickerson. The dates which I have for the birth of the children of James Acton and wife, Elizabeth McCraft, seem to fit the marriage date. Also, the marriage date seems to match up with the story of Elizabeth being kidnapped at a very young age and brought to this country where James met her and determined to save her from her bondage.

I regret that I don't have adequate documentation on this date, but this is the best that I have in my inherited materials.

Lorna Runyan Mullins

James Sr's will is on file there.

When you think about the British accents that existed all over back then, you can see why "Ecton" was a common spelling/pronunciation!

In "Albion's Seed", Fischer states that immigrants from the Borderlands arrived in 3 waves during the 18th Cent. Often, a whole village or extended family would leave together. This could explain how Jennie came to be born on a ship. Her parents may have feared separation from their relatives more than the hazards of childbirth in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Most of the Borderlands folks came in through Philadelphia. I've never run intoa any passenger lists. Either they haven't survived or no one has gone to the trouble of putting them on line.

One possibility for "Captain" James, is that the title derived from the militia. There's a passage in William Byrd II's diaries where he mentions meeting "Colonel Randolph" on the road to Williamsburg around 1710. That would be Wm. Randolph, the immigrant for the prominent family. He never served in a war, so it has to be a militia title. The passage also tells us that they used militia titles as social honorifics.

James died in KY. Depending on when he moved there, the KY militia is also a possibility.

John Marshall served in the Revolution, and the VA legislature cancelled commission of many officers at some point, so he went off to study law under Geo. Wythe well before the war's end. If James Acton had a similar status, there should be records of a commission, if any have survived. Marshall's uncle, Isham Keith, was about 30 at the time of the Revolution and had a rank of Captain, IIRC. So it wasn't too old.

As for James Acton and Jennie Roberts, I too have found Jennie to be born at "Atlantic Ocean, traveling from England to America" --- has anyone managed to find which ship she (well, her mother anyway, whom is always listed as Jane) traveled upon? I've exhausted every avenue I know.

Also, James Acton IS often listed as "Captain" and on myheritage.com someone had listed him as serving in the Revolutionary war. He's 30 years old in 1776, so it may be possible, although I have found no Revolutionary war records of him.

Anyone? Thanks for reading!
