Delos B. Adams 1872/WI - 1909/OR

Obituary from the Stevens Point Gazette, 29 Sep 1909
Died in Oregon
A wide circle of relatives, friends, and acquaintances in this county will be pained to learn of the death of Delos B. Adams, of Forest Grove, Oregon, which occurred at St. Vincent’s hospital, Portland, Sept. 17, 1909, in his thirty-seventh year, death being caused by appendicitis and typhoid fever. The parents of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. Johnathan Adams, still reside in Buena Vista, where he was born Nov. 1, 1872, the third of twelve children. All the surviving children except Mrs. Arthur Hardy of Lebanon, Pa., live in Wisconsin.
Mr. Adams was married to Miss Eva Trageser of Plover, Apr. 20, 1898. His wife and two children, Mabel and Victor, survive him. Before moving to Oregon four years ago, the family resided at Waupaca and in Buena Vista.
Mr. Adams was an extensive and successful dairyman. He was secretary of the Dairy Association in Oregon and was active, enterprising, and public spirited; his exemplary citizenship won him a host of Oregon friends. He was a member of the Maccabees of Waupaca and also of the Grange of Forest Grove, Oregon, the funeral being conducted under the auspices of the latter order on the 19th inst., with interment in the Forest Grove cemetery.
1815 Adams Rudd Carew family bible

There are three main families with historical information in this bible. The first and main family are the Rudds starting with the marriage of Captain Nathaniel Rudd to Rebekah Waldo in 1709. The entries continue up through 1812. Along the way an Alice Adams (1802) and a Polly Carew (1813) married into the family. The next few pages of genealogical entries follow these lines. The Carew pages (dating from the early 1700s, starting with Abigail and Thomas Carew) have been attached to the bible, and appear to possibly have been removed from a different bible and added here. The Adams pages have also been attached and appear to be all the same hand (a more modern hand) making a genealogical list of the Adams from 1723 to 1826 (perhaps these were copied out of yet another bible?) The Adams also start in the early 1700s and includes a short history of the early family and their land in Lisbon (Mass?). It’s hard to know exactly how all these pages came together but it’s easy to trace the family lineages. There are several other names including a group of Fitches
290275925918

Found an old photo of a couple with their baby in an antique store and would like to make sure it gets back to the descendants. On the back in pencil, it says. Mr. & Mrs. Landy Adems. Photography studio was Wilson, 389 State St. Chicago, Illinois. The picture was taken circa 1870-1890. Woman was young, around18 to 23 years old with dark curly hair. Man was older, probably mid to late 30's, with large moustache, major receding hairline with a large wisp in the center. Baby was approximately 3 months old and darling. Contact me at SusanDFEnn@comcast.net

Adams Family of Marion County

John Adams was born July 9, 1775 in Virginia. He married Nancy Burton on Feb. 9, 1796 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Her father, Elijah/Elisha Burton consented. She was born in Virginia Feb. 14, 1776.

John and Nancy Adams had the following children:

Susanna F., born Jan. 13, 1797 in Virginia, married unknown Adams (more below)
Mary, born 1798-1806, married M. S. Randall
Rebecca, born abt. 1807 in Virginia, married Singleton Fyke
Elizabeth Ann, born abt. 1810 in Virginia, married Henry G. Burrow
Elisha Jason, born April 4, 1813 in Kentucky, married Elizabeth Williams
Nancy B., born abt. 1818 in Kentucky, married William Burge
Jacob, died Jan. 1, 1844 in Illinois (more below)

John Adams died October 13, 1854. In his will, written Aug. 2, 1850, he leaves specific bequests to his wife, Nancy Adams, to Elisha Jason Adams, and to Rebecca Fyke (he left her an additional $50, possibly because she was blind). All of the above listed children, except Mary and Jacob were heirs. Mary and Jacob both died before their father. The heirs of Mary Randall are heirs to John’s estate. Nancy died Sep. 20, 1873. Both John and Nancy are buried in Antioch Cemetery in Marion County, Illinois.

Susanna F. Adams: Susanna married another Adams, possibly a Jason Adams (there is a Jason buried next to her). She is listed as a widow in census documents. In the 1840 census, she is listed as a head of household with the following – 1 male under 5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20. She was the mother of John Adams, born. abt . 1827 in Tenn., died Oct. 7, 1859. John is in her household in the 1850 census. Elisha was the administrator of John’s estate and became the guardian of his minor children, Eliza Jane Adams (married Spruce Boggs) and William S. Adams. Susanna could be the mother of Nathan Adams, born abt. 1821 in Tenn. His household is next to hers in the 1850 census. Based on census data, she likely has other offspring.

Jacob Adams: Jacob died in 1844. He is buried in Antioch Cemetery in Raccoon Township next to his parents. The cemetery transcription states that Jacob, son of J & N, d. Oct. 1844, 13 Yr 1 Mn 23 Da. That would put his birth year as 1831, which would make Nancy 56 years old at the time of his birth, an improbable age today, much less the 1800’s. This made me think for a while that Jacob could have been Susanna’s son, but I now believe that he was John & Nancy’s son and that the date in the transcription was wrong. In the 1830 census, Nancy and John have two other males living in their household, 1 age 15-20 (this would be Elisha) and 1 age 20-30. In the 1840 census, there are males ages 20-30 (Elisha) and 30-40. Although I don’t have a copy of the records, according to an article that I found in “Footprints in Marion County”, Susanna, Mary, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Nancy and Elisha were heirs to Jacob Adams estate. Since a boy of 13 would not have had an estate, I believe that Jacob was actually 43 when he died and had no children. This would be consistent with the census records. When I visited the cemetery in 2001, Jacob’s stone was very worn and it was hard to make out much info. It’s very possible it could have said that he was 43, and that only the vertical of the 4 was readable when the transcription was taken.

Elisha Jason Adams: Elisha Jason married Elizabeth Jane Williams in 1875 at the age of 62. They had two children: Ollie D. Adams and John C. Adams. Ollie became the administrator of her father’s estate. Elisha administered the estates of his father, John Adams, his nephew, John Adams, and his brother-in-law, Henry G. Burrow. He also was the guardian of several orphaned children in the family. He inherited his father’s farm when his mother, Nancy, died.

Harrison, James T., Nicholas, William & Martin Adams: I have seen several trees posted on ancestry indicating that these men are the sons of John and Nancy, as well as seeing the same information posted on findagrave. That information is incorrect. None of these men were heirs to John’s estate. Based on census records these men were born in Virginia about 1809-1823. John and Nancy were in Kentucky by 1813, when Elisha was born, and were still there in Logan County in the 1820 census. In the 1830 census they were in Marion County, and only two males younger than John are in the household. Only one is the right age to be these men, and that male is Elisha. They are likely related in some way, but they are not John and Nancy’s sons. According to an article I have from “Footprints in Marion County”, they are brothers, but no source is given.

Sarah Sally Adams & Sally Adams: There are trees listing both of these women as daughters of John and Nancy. That doesn’t work either. Based on the dates in the trees, both would have been alive when John’s estate was probated. Neither was an heir. Therefore, they cannot be his daughters. His daughter, Mary Randall, died before he wrote his will in 1850 and her children were heirs to John’s estate. Therefore, it is simply not believable that these women, who were living at the time of his death in the same area, would not have been included in the estate if they were his daughters.

John L. Adams vs. John Adams: Many of the posts indicate that Nancy’s husband was “John L. Adams.” None of the contemporary documentation, including his own signature on his will, indicates that Nancy’s John Adams ever used the initial “L.” There is no middle initial on his tombstone, nor any census documents, nor his land records. All state his name simply as “John Adams.” There is a John L. Adams living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in the 1830 census, perhaps people are trying to connect them. But by then, John and Nancy are living in Marion County.

Many of these Adames followed similar migration patterns and married into the same families. There is likely some relationship I just don’t know what it is.

I’m more than willing to share with anyone who wants further information or has questions. If anyone has any evidence that is contrary to what I have written, please feel free to let me know.
Mary Naomi Adams

I am hoping that someone out there might be able to help us. I have been researching my wife's family for several years but have had a very difficult time tracing her paternal grandfathers side. The problem? Well her father was adopted. We have his birth certificate and from that we got both his parents name, or so we were hoping. Mary Naomi Adams is his mother. We have been able to trace her side very easily and have even had contact with one of her sisters just before she passed away. On the birth certificate his father is named as James Roger Levingston. Based on the age listed for him on the certificate he was born abt. 1917. Mary gave birth at Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C. (long since destroyed and most documents missing) Mary's father was Nathan Benjamin Adams. We spoke with Mary's sister, Opal, several years back and she knew that Mary had been 'sent' to Washington but she said that she did not know why. At this point I am stuck with namthing but a name and rough birthdate for James Roger Levingston. Any possible help or direction would be much appreciated.

One additional bit, Mary kept her baby for a few months eventually leaving him with a family in Virginia by the last name Drury.

obit for Margaret Adams Wormser, born 1845 Missouri, died 1925 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Feb. 5, 1925, page 2:
Mrs. Margaret Wormser
Margaret Adams was born at Canton, Mo., August 18, 1845, and died at Ada, Kansas, January 23, 1925.
She was united in marriage to Michael Wormser January 13, 1867, at Junction City, Kansas. He preceded her in death July 3, 1911. To this union were born seven children: Robert of Barnard, Kans.; Mrs. Eva Towne of Beverly, Kansas; Mrs. Lulu Cornelison, Mrs. Clara Bowline and Charley of Ada; Edgar of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Mrs. Maggie Conklin of Caney, Kansas, who with twenty-two grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one sister remain to mourn their loss.
The funeral services were held in the church Monday at 2 o'clock. Rev. Wilson of the Beverly baptist church led the devotionals. Rev. Clark preached. The music was furnished by a sextette of musicians. Burial in the Ada cemetery beside her husband. Mrs. Wormser and her late husband were members of the Baptist church in Ada for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Wormser were among the early settlers and endured more than any one of us could endure now. They found a barren prairie and left a well improved farm south west of Ada a short distance. Mrs. Wormser was very frail for three years and was well cared for and given every aid the children near her could give, and as fitting burial as dutiful children could arrange for mother.

James Adams b. 1816 GA -d. 1873 AL m. Martha Leath

I am looking for the parents of James Adams, husband of Martha Leath. He was born in GA July 2, 1916 and was in Cherokee Co. married to Martha by the 1850 census. In 1870n he was in Etowah Co. Their children were born from approximately 1850 - 1870.

Children were Emmaline, Mary Francs (married William Beasley Snead), Jane (married Garrett), Martha Ann (married Smith), John (married Lizzie MAckey), James (married Lula Taft), Thomas (married [1] --- Wood [2] Lucy Kelly), and Thompson George.

Does anyone know of an Adams couple in Gerogia who could have been James Adams parents. I wonder if the surnames Lewis and Thommpson givien sons could be a clue. Daughter Mary Frances Adams Snead also used the name Lewis for a child (son James Lewis). She named another son Walter Ellis and yet another Charlie Cleveland.

I'll appreciate any clues or suggestions.

Biography J.R. Adams, MD b. 1822 in Garrard Co KY>Ft Worth TX

J.R. Adams, MD., one of the oldest members of the medical profession of Fort Worth Texas, was born in Garrard Co., Kentucky, May 3, 1822, and was reared principally upon a farm. During a period of his youth he clerked in a dry goods store in Lancaster, his native county. After deciding to become a physician he attended a course of medical lectures at Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, in 1842-1843, and continued his medical studies in 1845 in the Ohio Medical College, at Cincinnati, at which school he graduated the following year. He began practicing his profession in June 1846, at Stamping Ground, Scott County, Kentucky, at which point he remained twelve years. He then located upon a farm in the same county, known as the Blue Spring Farm, where R.M. Johnson taught the Indians for the Government. Here he practiced for ten years, and then located at Georgetown Kentucky, where he remained until 1872 or 1873, and then went out to California, spending two years in that State, returning to Georgetown. He next took a course of lectures in the Louisville (Kentucky) Hospital College (1878/9) and in 1880 came to Texas, locating at Fort Worth, where he has since followed his profession, meeting with success, but he has now retired from practice. He is a director of Traders National Bank of Fort Worth. The Doctor's father, Walter Adams, was a native of Maryland, born in 1780, and was a distant cousin of President John Q. Adams. His father was Luke Adams, who was also a native of Maryland, married a Miss Herndon, and died in Missouri. His children were John, Elijah, Walter, and a daughter, who died in early life. Walter Adams married Judith Adams (not a relative), who was a daughter of Rev. Fethergail Adams, a Baptist minister. The children of this union were, Elizabeth, now the widow of William Lear, and living in Missouri; Fethergail, deceased, who was a farmer and trader in Garrard Co., Kentucky; Luke, deceased, in Missouri; Walter, a farmer in Shelby Co., Kentucky; Nancy, deceased, who married first Hiram Beasley, and after his death Hugh Logan; Zerilda, who married Jacob Robinson, of Garrard Co., Kentucky; John, deceased, a farmer, of Owen Co., Kentucky, died in 1893; Dr Daniel S., of the above county,; William, who died in Fort Worth; Mary, deceased, married David H. Arnold, of Jessamine Co., Kentucky; and Dr James R., our subject.

Dr Adams was married in 1847, in Shelby Co., Kentucky to Elizabeth U., daughter of Frank C. Ford, a farmer, and trader. Her death occurred July 4, 1867. The children by this union were Frank F., who is engaged in the stock business in Sedalia, Missouri; William, a resident of Johnson Co., Texas; Mrs Dr. H.F. Bryan, of Georgetown, Kentucky; and Judith Mc, who married "Nat" Lyon. In September 1868 Dr Adams married Mrs Emma J. Stevenson, a cousin of his first wife.

(Biography taken from "The History of Texas")

Looking for family of Fern Louella Opie and Charles Lewis Adams. Lewis may have had a Geneva as a sister?

Fern's mother's maiden name was Harriet? Barber. 2 daughters of Fern and Lewis-- Margaret and Harriet.

Fern also lists Mary Louise Adeline Adams as her daughter 10 years after she was divorced from Lewis.....hmmm. Mary Lou was my grandmother and always wanted to know the truth. I found an application to amend her birth certificate after her death--but no names were entered....guess it's my job now.

Looking for info on the Adams family who lived in the area around Thomson or Warrenton, Georgia in the late 1700's-until at least the middle 1800's.

A daughter of the family, Jane Adams born 1822 married Moses Smith in 1842 and they lived on the Smith family farm on Old Warrenton Road just outside of Thomson. Moses, Jane and his mother Edye (Smith)Smith are buried in a family plot on that farm.

They raised a large family which included my great grandmother, Cassandra S. Smith born 1851 who married James Davis Waddell. James D Waddell operated a dry goods store on Main Street in Thomson in the 1870's-80's.

Looking for parents of John ADAMS b VA 1802, left home to trade for 5 yrs. returned home and parents had moved, this was supposed to have taken place in South Carolina. John md. Ailsey b 1810-3 VA or GA, ca 1830 probably in TN. had 13 children born TN-KY-IL. John evidently died ca 1856-60, White County Il. He was on the Saline Co Il 1850, and wife Ailsey was on 1860 White Co IL,called Ainsley ADAMS. We have knowledge of two of the sons, Anderson b 1832 TN, and Thomas b 1836 TN, they both settled in Jackson Co IL and died there. What happen to the rest of the children? This has been a long haul to find what we have, does any of this sound a little familiar to any of you ADAMS researchers? (They were supposed to be in the Hopkinsville KY area in the 1840s.)Thanks so much.

Searching for info on an Adams line from South Carolina and possibly Virginia. I would like to share notes with anyone else that is interested in this family: Samuel William Adams born 1857 in Pickens South Carolina and married to Catherine Elizabeth Blackston, Samuel I. "Jenkins" Adams born 1820 in Anderson South Carolina and married to Catherine Carolyn Grant, Jacob Adams married in 1777 to Mary Towsin Stamper. I have been told that Jacob MIGHT have been the son of a John Adams born in Virginia in 1727 and married to Ann Caudill, however the dates don't match well.

Edward/Minos Adams Line from Maryland

I hope someone can help me. Recently I found an old newspaper article dated Sept 6, 1935 in the Oakland Tribune where a woman named E. Adams Robertson, aged 77, (makes her born about 1858 or so) identified herself as a grand daughter of Minos Adams of Maryland, who she claimed "was a first cousin to the sixth President, John Quincy Adams", and "a direct lineal descendant of a brother of John Adams."

Now, I does anyone know which children of Minos and Margaret (Wilson) Adams may be her parents? (Possibly William Hicks Adams?) Also I am wondering if the Buford Adams in St Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri is the son of William Hicks Adams?

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobuchan/BioADAMS_Buford.h...

From the above bio it does appear he could be.

I hope someone can help me with this. I know this is a compound question, but it seems like several of the Adams of Dorchester Co Maryland came to Missouri. I know Dr Minos Adams (son of Minos Sr and Margaret Wilson did) he lived in Cass and Lafayette Cos in Missouri.

Hope someone can shed light on this prolific very patriotic family.

Elise, MN

Adams Family of Jasper, Texas

I am looking for info on the family of Rush B. and Lizzie M. Adams of Jasper, TX. They are my great grandparents. Their daughter, Mildred Ford Adams Watson is my grandmother.

We were always told that thier names were Benjamin Rush and Marie Elizabeth, but in census records, the are listed as Rush and Lizzie.

I am trying to find infor on their parents, as well. I was always told that Lizzie was the daugther of an Indian woman, Susan Douglass, and a white landowner, whose last name was Carraway. There is some confusion over his first name. It is either Benjamin or John. The Carraway could also have roots in the Houston area.

Family lore has it that Lizzie was accepted by her white father and his legal wife and lived with them until it became clear that she could not pass for white.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

-Andrea Williams
williamsad615@yahoo.com

SAMUEL R. ADAMS m. SUSANNAH (lnu)

Through a lot of digging online, and using some investigative skills, I found the final reseting place of my Alfred Adams, whom I had posted about previously. Along with finding Alfred and his wife, I found his mother, and miraculously, the name of his father. The information I have is:

SAMUEL R. ADAMS m. SUSANNAH (lnu) (b. 8-12-1792 Ohio d. 7-16-1864 buried in Walker/Chapel Cemetery in Schuyler, Lancaster County, Missouri)

Their son, ALFRED ADAMS (b. 3-26-1816 NJ d. 5-10-1869, buried in Walker/Chapel Cemetery in Schuyler, Lancaster County, Missouri) m. JANE (lnu) (b. 9-8-1823 Ohio d. 8-2-1885 buried in Walker/Chapel Cemetery in Schuyler, Lancaster County, Missouri)

Susannah’s grave marker reads “Wife of Samuel R.”.

Does anyone have any information about a SAMUEL R. ADAMS, born appr. 1790, place unknown? His wife was born in Ohio, his son was born in NJ, the family settled without him in Missouri. Could he have possible died in a war. Where would I look to see if any pension was drawn, etc?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I am looking for information on William Adams and his wife Eliza (Lewer) Adams. They were both born in London, England. I believe they came to Boston, MA on the ship Boston on 8/28/1855 along with their children George, Charles, Alice, Elizabeth and Francis. Their ages at this time were 44 and 43 respectively, giving birth dates of 1810/1811 for William and 1811/1812 for Eliza.

Daughter Elizabeth eventually married William E. Goldsmith from the Poland, ME area.

Thanks for your help.

I am researching my Grandmothers family. Trying to prove or disspell the circulating myth of relationship to Pres. John Adams. I am stuck on My ggg-grandfather Edward Adams born abt 1820's(?) in Anderson, In. I have no death year but know that he is suppose to be buried in Anderson also. He was married to Rosanna Serber who was also from Anderson and died in 1890. His son Corbin married Melissa Reed and their Son Oliver Morton Perry Adams married Mary Titus and they lived in Logansport, IN. If any one has any info or an idea of where else to look please let me know.

POW/MIA Korean War, ADAMS

I am searching for the families of 4 soldiers with the surname ADAMS that were POW/MIA in the Korean War. We have no family contact.

Soldier: DARYL ADAMS
Born: 1931
Date of loss: July 50 i950
Home of record: Los Angles, CA

Soldier: DONALD EDWIN ADAMS
Born: December 26, 1929
Date of loss: August 14, 1952
Home of record: Appleton, WI

Soldier: JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
Born: 1932
Date of loss: July 27, 1950
Home of record: Maricopa County, AZ

Robert Henry Adams
Born: 1917
Date of loss: Jan. 31, 1952
Home of record: Woodbury, NJ

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. At the present time our government has no family contact for these soldiers.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
