Hi Jerry
I have been looking Grandma Bertha Viola Adamson (Larsen) relatives for many years. She had a large family with at least 7 siblings. Bertha came over from Oklahoma in the late 1800's on a wagon train to the Dalles in Oregon. She was born on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Her parents were the late Bert Clarence and Minnie Belle Adamson.
If you are part of this family please email me back.
Thank you

My great great gran uncle is George Adamson. My grandmither Nula Cannon (was adamson) was daughter to Ann Gormen and John Adamson. My grandmother now lives in Tullamore, Boora, Co.Offaly Ireland. George was part of the IRA and was shot in Athlone, in Co.Offaly, Ireland. At 2am in Athlone he was met by nine armed soldiers who told him to put his hands up - when he refused, George's companions were lined up and shot through the head. George Adamson was then shot in the head, Brigade General George adamson was admired and very popular, when George was in the european war he was the machine gun sergeant and won D.C.M and the mons medal. He fought againmst the british and wasd wounded twice. The castle was named after him and is a special place for me and my family.

I'm trying to find where Julius Edwin Adamson (1867-1946) is buried.

He was the son of John Benjamin and Amanda Kelly Adamson, born in Appanoose County, Iowa.

He married Julia Myrtle Creed, who died in 1918. He remarried to Harriet Eloise Nash Edic, also a widow. I have most of his statistics, except for his final resting place.

If someone has info, even just the city where he died or an obituary, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Brett

Joseph's Dad wanted him to be a cowboy on his uncle's ranch. Joseph did not want to be so he started to leave on a horse and his uncle shot him off the horse. Joseph was determined not to be a cowboy so he got up and rode away on the horse even though he was wounded. He rode to Boxville, KY before he stopped and married Mary Elizabeth Duncan. He would never tell anyone about his parents not even his wife. The only thing they knew was he would read the paper about Southern to mid California. One story was about a tornado in Southern California, while he was reading it; his wife saw tears. NOTE: His name could have been anything, because back then you could change your name anytime you wanted without telling anyone. He could have taken the name of someone who helped him or just changed it, because he wanted to keep anyone from finding him(Adams or Adamsen to Adamson) or because he liked the name Adamson.
CA Census Records: (Could have been Father & Uncle)
Joseph Adamson 1850 El Dorado Co, CA Irish Creek
(Township)
Jacob Adamson 1850 El Dorado Co, CA Mathenias Creek
(Township
The above is the closet I can come to finding any info about Joesph Allen Adamson. If you know anything about this please contact me @ gtm00re@yahoo.com. Some of the later census had him listed as JA or J A Adamson.

Re: Lemuel Adamson, 1829-1871

Per a letter from his sister in Texas to my ggrandfather, Edward James Adamson, a copy of which I have, their brother Lemuel Jefferson Adamson died 5 June 1871. Although the 1880 Federal census lists them otherwise, the first three children of L.J.'s spouse, Patience Ivy, were Adamsons: Nora(h), Thomas and Cynthia. The 1880 Federal and 1885 Kansas censuses each list three additional children but with different given names; however, since their places and dates of birth are identical, I believe they are the same three: Lilly/Bell, b. TX 1873; Lewis/Meller, b. TX 1876; and Henry/William, b. KS 1879--all Burdetts, fathered by Patience's husband #2, Lewis Burdett, who died of "suffocation" in Oct. 1880. The 1900 Federal census lists widow Patience and youngest son "W. Henry" in District 146, Ward 2, Topeka, Shawnee County, KS. It shows Patience as having had six children, all of whom are still alive. Those would be three by L. J. Adamson and three by Lewis Burdett, as identified above.
Given L.J.'s date of death and the birth date of the first Burdett child, it appears reasonable to assume Patience and Lewis' marriage date to be around 1872.
The 1885 Kansas census shows these folks in two adjacent households, the first of which (36) is headed by an O'Neil. I believe it's likely that Retta O'Neil, age 14, in household 37, is related to the O'Neil adults in 36--probably a daughter. I haven't determined any relationship between the Adamson/Burdett clan and the O'Neils.

I have photocopies of all of them, including a letter written to my ggrandfather by one of his sisters in Texas, telling him of Lemuel's death. I would be happy to send you a copy if you'd share your name and snailmail address.

Finally--send me your e-mail address so we can talk about my downloading much of my Adamson database to you.

Steve,
I am sorry it has taken me a whole year to reply. Somehow I never saw this message until just now. Here is some missing info for you on Lemuel Adamson's decendents:

******On 25 May 1892 in Osage Co., KS, Nora Adamson married David Leroy Tyner, b. Jan 1856 in IN. I know of two children: Letha M., b. Feb 1894 and Lemuel E., b. Mar 1896.*****

David Leroy Tyner was born 29 Jan 1856 at Wabash, Wabash, Indiana. He married Nora Adamson on 25 May 1892 at Carbondale, Osage, Kansas. They had two children: Aleatha Mae who was born 11 Feb 1894 at Overbrook, Osage, Kansas (she is my maternal grandmother) and Lemuel Edward who was born 15 Mar 1896. He died 20 Mar 1908 at Overbrook and is buried in the city cemetery there.

If I have done my genealogical math correctly, you are my mother's 3rd cousin, or my 1st cousin, once removed.

Do you have other questions?

Any chance we can link up our records somehow? I knew nothing about the Adamson line past Lemuel. I heard he was a confederate veteran.

Re: john adamson and ann skute

I have been looking for John Adamson parents for almost thirty years, Join the chase, however I don't think the answer will be found on the internet. Old fashioned search is what is needed.
The various spellings have come by numerous sources.
Quakers record disclose- SKUSE and SKUCE. Roberts book suggest SKEW. Other guess have come from speculation. SKUTE came from unsubstantiated posting on gen forum. See History in article "Ann Skute Myth" on AdamsonAncestry.com. This (1998) is the first occurrence of the name "Skute" on any postings (And it was incorrect). You will not find the name used prior to this date.
You will find that many Adamson researchers have taken the Skute misrepresentation as fact. Its too easy to use "I found it on the internet" as a source of ancestry, or link it to others miscomprehension. The bad part is that now Both Ancestry.com and familysearch.org (LDS sponsered site) use these bad posting as references. Users need to read the source disclaimers to see that the source is just another posting.
The source document for the marriage of John Adamson and the origin of the name Ann "Skuse" and "Skuce" can be found on www.AdamsonAncestry.com. Look under Pioneering Spirit of Colonist John Adamson and the Haddonfield article.

Virgil James Adamson - Illinois

Looking for information on Virgil J(ames) Adamson of Seven Oaks, Illinois. The only info I've uncovered is that his father (name unknown) was born in the Carolinas (I cannot discern if the census reads 'North' or 'South' Carolina due to the script used). Specifically looking for his parents or other siblings (if any).

He is my maternal great-grandfather. My grandfather doesn't know very much about his family history before his father. Virgil was married to Opal L. (maiden name unknown). They had three children: Virgil, Robert and Pauline. Thanks

Re: Lemuel Adamson, 1829-1871

I assume you're going to fill us in on the details of your relationship with Lemuel Adamson--so here's what I "know" (always open to correction!) about your gggrandfather: According to a very old unsigned list of Wells Adamson's offspring found in the papers of his son (my ggrandfather) Edward James Adamson (1824-1901), his next younger brother Lemuel Jefferson Adamson was born 6 Jan 1829 near Liberty, Wilson (now Dekalb), TN. A letter from their sister Cynthia Adams, found in the same papers, indicates that Lemuel died 5 Jun 1871 in Limestone Co., TX. He probably was living in TX as early as 1849, when an L. J. Adamson signed a petition to the governor. His estate was probated in Limestone Co. District Court in 1874.

Lemuel married Patience Decence Ivy, who was born about 1843 in TN. They had three children; according to the Federal census of 1870 and the Kansas census of 1885, all were born in TX: Nora, b. 16 Feb 1864 and d. 28 Mar 1927 Overbrook, Osage, KS; Thomas W(ells?), b. about 1865, and Cynthia A, b. about 1867.

Following Lemuel’s death, his spouse and three children are listed in the 1885 Kansas census as residing in Carbondale, Osage, KS.

On 25 May 1892 in Osage Co., KS, Nora Adamson married David Leroy Tyner, b. Jan 1856 in IN. I know of two children: Letha M., b. Feb 1894 and Lemuel E., b. Mar 1896.

Thomas W. Adamson married Minnie -----, b. about 1872 in NY. I know of two children: Aida, b. about 1891, and Mamie, b. about 1893.

Lemuel Jefferson Adamson was the fifth of nine known children of Wells Adamson (b. about 1793, Stokes Co., NC; d. about 1839, Liberty, Wilson [now Dekalb] TN).

Wells Adamson was the son of Jesse T. Adamson (b. about 1759, Orange Co., NC; d. before Dec. 1825, Wilson Co., TN) and Mary Wells (b. 1757, Orange Co., NO; d. about 1830, Smith or Wilson Co., TN). Born a Quaker, Wells became a Middle Tennessee slave-owner and was the last of my Quaker line.

Jesse T. Adamson was the son of Simon Adamson (b. 1733, Bucks Co., PA; d. 2 May 1812, Jefferson Co., TN).

Simon Adamson was the son of John Adamson (d. about 1753, PA) and Ann Skew (d. 1733, Bucks Co., PA), Quakers whose intention to marry is delineated in the minutes of the Camden (NJ) Monthly Meeting in 1716 and who with their (then) four children joined the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, Springfield, Bucks, PA, in 1726. I assume that John Adamson came from the British Isles but neither I nor any other researcher (to my knowledge) has any proof. The origins of Ann Skew (aka Skuce, aka Skute) are controversial (as you will see if you read about her on many web sites); however, I tend to agree with Jerry Adamson, who has concluded that she was not Swedish and that at present, we really don't know from whence she came.

Regarding the first clue: It seems to me that this contradicts the facts we already have. County marriage records indicate that John Q. did indeed marry a young woman (Malinda Dixon) in Andrew Co., MO--but multiple years of census records indicate that the John Q. who moved to Oregon was a small child in the household of his stepfather, John Chenowith. Since Malinda, the child's mother, married Chenowith only two years after marrying John Q. Adamson, and we have no known record of a divorce, it seems likely that the John Q. whom she married was dead in Andrew County--not moving to Oregon and raising sheep. Regarding the second clue: plausible. Is there anything to lead us to believe that Enos' son John is the John Q. we're looking for?

I have concluded that John Q. Adamson Sr.(ca 1820-bef 1849), was the s/o Enos Adamson and Joanna Stanley.
The clues for this connection were:
First; Excerpts from a Letter from Dr. Valentine V. Adamson to his daughter, Margaret Adamson Tousey prior to 1928:

“My father's brother, John Quincy Adamson, married a young woman in Andrew Co., Missouri & moved to a settlement on Roug River. He died in a few years after acquiring a large tract of land where he engaged in the sheep industry; his
widow & son John Quincy, Jr., continued the business & accumulated a good deal of property. …”

This was posted in KARD, Volume 11, March 1989, page 17, submitted by Lorraine Thomas Perry.

My Second Clue;, John Mentioned with his parents:

Enos Adamson The subject of this sketch came to Madison county in 1827 and located one mile east of Huntsville on the farm now owned by George R. Diven. He lived there but a short time, removing to Huntsville, where he engaged in the milling and mercantile business. The mills were consumed by fire in 1848, causing him considerable loss. He rebuilt the mills, sold them to Wilson and Cockayne, and removed to Missouri, and died there about the year 1850. His wife died and was buried at Huntsville a few years previous to his removal. They had four children, whose names were Thomas, John, Elizabeth and Louisa Jane.

Source: History of Madison County, Indiana from 1820 to 1874 by: Samuel Harden Markleville, Indiana 1874

Submitted by Bev Davis

http://www.members.tripod.com/~debmurray/madison/madbioref.h...

Enos was the s/o John Adamson and Mary Hammer and gs/o Simon Adamson Sr.

I believe John Q.'s father was also named John Q. According to the Andrew County, MO, marriage records, transcribed on the county GenWeb site, he married Melinda Dixon 23 Jul 1846 in Andrew Co., MO, where John Q. the younger was born, probably in 1847. It is likely that John Q. the elder died, because on 29 Jul 1849, Melinda Adamson married John "Chinewoth" (one of those names for which there are myriad spellings!), with whom she and John Q. the Younger moved to Oregon. The family is easily tracked in census records starting in 1850.

I'm accumulating data on the Adamsons in northwest MO/southwest IA to try to determine their previous stops in the westward journey, and maybe figure out John Q. the elder's ancestry. I have some guesses, but so far no proof. Anyone else out there want to weigh in with facts?
