I haven't been able to trace William's family yet. I only just found him and his wife in the last week. I have William's year and place of birth from his army record. I still haven't found his marriage or the name of the older child who immagrated to NZ them.

Adlington is the spelling that came down through the family and what is clearly on the army record. But the NZ Fencibles information mostly has Allington. I knew Ellen had remarried but only found the marriage when I came across the Hadlington name in another record, I hadn't thought of it before as a possibility. Myabe she gave her name verbally and her accent was misunderstood?

Alicia

Alicia

Hi I do believe that was one of the family my brother is trying to trace. Do you happen to know if William had a brother David born 1823?
It is strange how many different ways our surname can be spelt even now.

Would William Adlington born Rotherham in 1806 by any chance be one of the siblings on your list?
William was a druggist when he joined the 97th foot regiment in London April 1824. He served until 1842 when he was invalided out. He enlisted with the Fencibles and came to New Zealand in 1847 with his wife Ellen (nee Williamson) and one child. He died in Auckland Colonial Hospital in December 1848 and his son John was born in January 1849.
John Adlington was my great great grandfather.
(the surname appears variously as Adlington/Addlington/Addington/Allington/Hadlington)

I think I've solved my mystery thanks to Waikato Universities new British Parlimentary Papers about New Zealand http://digital.liby.waikato.ac.nz/bppnz
William Adlington (Allington/Halington)was a Fencible solider who came to New Zealand on the Minerva in 1847, with his wife Ellen (nee Williamson) and one child. He died in Auckland Colonial Hospital on 7 Dec 1848 of incurable kidney and liver disease (this is the bit I found on the British Papers database).
On 6 Jan 1849 Ellen gave birth to John. Which I found here on Rootsweb in a list of early Auckland births.
As William had not served 7 years with the Fencibles Ellen would not have been able to keep their cottage and land. She married John Robinson early in 1849.
I don't know what became of John's older sibling who came over on the Minerva with William and Ellen.
I am researching Arthur Adlington who died in Providence 1858 and was the husband of Elizabeth Eustis Gray Adlington who preceeded him in death. Father of 6 children (my direct line is thru his son Charles G Adlington). Would you be willing to share death certificate? Have you learned anything additional regarding his parents since last post?
Thands

I've managed to trace my dad's family back to David Adlington c1824, now I have paperwork saying that his father was David Adlington c1784 and mother was Mary Clay c1784. My problem is that I have managed to find a list of their children but David is not amongst them. Their eldest son was Frederick Clay c1804 and the youngest on the list was Peter 3 Mar 1829, now can anyone link David into this family and have teh sourse details to go with it? They seem to have moved down from Rotherham to Lambeth London over the years.

Adlington's in New Zealand

I am trying to trace the ancestry of my great, great grandfather John or Johnie Adlington (or in some records Addlington). He was born in New Zealand in 1849 but NZ's historical BDM records have no name for his father and where his mother's name should be it says Auckland which I suspect is where he was born.
A story written out by a now deceased relative says he was living at Waipu with his mother and abusive stepfather when he left home at 12 and was taken in by another family. But a local history of the Waimauku area says the Adlington family lived nearby (but I have so far found no other mention of them in this area before John arrives as an adult to work as a bullock driver).
He married Mary Ann Wilkins in 1879 in Waikoukou (near modern day Waimauku) and they had four children Marcus Henry Herbert, John, Mary Alice and Wilfred (my great grandfather). He died in 1888 aged 39.
Does anyone have any clue who John's parents might have been?
Other than his birth I'm struggling to find much about anyone with the surname Adlington in New Zealand this early.

Well I have done the same, except having got back to David Adlington c1823 and Elizabeth Cot c1827 I am now stuck. David was my g.g grandfather. the only evidence I have that he existed is on his son Richard Henry's birth certificate,(he was my g grandfather).I just wondered if maybe you had come across their names, somewhere else on your search. From what I have found out we come from the East End of London, Whitechapel/Bethnal Green area.
Hi James I have an old copy of all the ADLINGTON names. I have managed with help from this to get back to DAVID ADLINGTON and ELIZABETH COT now according to your research they had 5 boys, JAMES DAVID 1844 ST BRIDE FLEET ST LONDON;DAVID 1846 ST ANN BLACKFRIARS LONDON;RICHARD 1847 NELSON SPRINGFIELD LONDON;WILLIAM CLAY 1850 ST BRIDE FLEET ST LONDON; and GEORGE VINCENT 1852 ST BRIDE FLEET ST LONDON.
I cant seem to trace any further back. I have no idea where David or Elizabeth were born, when they married or when they died. I have checked and checked again for this information but to no avail. Can you please help me? I'm getting confused because others looking for a David Adlington keep sending me the wrong info. My David was born c1823 and I think Elizabeth was born c 1827 but that is all I know.David would be my g.g grandfather, Richard was my g grandfather and his son George Frederick was my grandad.
Hi Jim,

I've only just now had a really close look at the photo. I can see the number 165, but not Windmill Street, altho' it would be logical for the shop to be in a road like that. Interestingly Harry's uncle, Jonathan (b.1810) traded from another shop in Windmill Street, number 62, known as Milton Hall Stores. The business was taken over by Harry's 2nd cousin, John Adlington MASON (my gggrandfather. I'm not very good at dating photo's, but it is more than likely that Harry was trading at the same time as either his Uncle or cousin. I also see that the shop sign saya 'late' W Richards - must see if there is a link between Harry & the MASON/RICHARDS link.

Regards

Clive

Hello Clive

Good to hear from you again. I had a closer look at the bicycle in the picture as I had noticed what appeared to be an address to H.E. Adlington's shop. I was able to make it out after inverting the picture "165 Windmill Street" There just so happens to be a 165 Windmill Street Gravesend Kent DA11 0 United Kingdom. I was able to locate this on google maps and from the map it does look like it may be the shop in question. Closest search for that address came up as a business "Halifax Place Bank" 165 Windmill Street DA12"

The H.E Adlington late W. Richards sign had me wondering if that meant he had purchased the store from W. Richards and that was an attempt at continuity with the previous owner's customers. I am not sure who the fellow is who is standing next to him nor the delivery boy on the bike.

What I was amazed at was the size of the tins of Salmon and the "Reliable brands only bacon sign"

take care

Jim Davenock

Hi,

The picture of Harry's shop is interesting as I see he is in partnership with W RICHARDS. Harry's 2nd cousin, Albert MASON married into a RICHARDS family - but don't know of any link. Grocering (is there such a word?) is commmon to both the ADLINGTON and MASON families.

Regards

Clive Challis

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to trace my family tree but have gotten a bit stuck on my grandmothers side. I am looking for an Ada Adlington.

I have found someone that fits the bill but can't find any evidence to say that it is definitely her. Can anyone help?

The Ada I have found was born in 1893, her parents were William and Mary and she had quite a few siblings.

The Ada I am looking for was born around that time and married someone by the name of Gilbert. She had five children, including Stanley born in 1919 and Hilda in 1924.

Is this her? or if not then can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thank you,
Laura

Sorry, wan't having a good night. Right I have a list of all the ADLINGTON back to EADULF kindly sent to my brother from 2 brothers in Australia. Somewhere along the way both my brother and I have got confused. What we do know for sure is that our grandad was GEORGE FREDERICK ADLINGTON 1887 born to RICHARD HENRY ADLINGTON 1847 and ANN E BODEN 1851c. According to the list Richard's father was DAVID ADLINGTON 1823c and his mother was ELIZABETH COT 1827c, but we cannot find any trace of him anywhere other than on this list. He doesn't seem to appear in any of the census, Birth,Marriage or Death registars, so where do we look? I know great grandad and grandad were born in East London, Whitechapel/Shoreditch area and continued to live in that area for sometime. It's getting back beyond DAVID ADLINGTON that is the problem.

At this stage I have not been able to find her parents on any census, In 1851 she is with her Gparents, George and Jane at Clerkenwell. She was born at 5 Spencer Place Clerkenwell and the 41,51 and 1861 census show her and her brother George and Grandparents living there, but not her Parents, Does anyone else have this same problem.
Hello Clive - we've been here before! I lost a lot of my notes due to computer breakdown but can you frefresh my memory with regard to the John Adlington you refer to? My gt.gt.gt.grandfather was John, born around 1789, believed married 1812ish to Ann (? Evans) in St.George in the East or Limehouse area. I have his descendants down to myself and beyond but I am still looking for the origin of John. I don't have a Kent connection but know nothing of any brothers he might have had.
I recently moved house so I am in more of a state of confusion than usual! but still earching.
Regards, Doris.

What was the date of the obituary for John Adlington? I believe that John George Adlington's father was William Adlington. William's brother John died, unmarried, in Edinburgh in 1884. Both brothers were music teachers and choir directors and both were born in Southwell (at least I know William was) and later moved to Scotland.

I am very interested to hear what happened to Clement and Esther-- For some reason I became fascinated by this family (a side branch of my own) and tried to follow their lives-- only to hit a brick wall, presumably because they left the UK. Thank you for sharing the information! I have numerous census, birth, marriage and death records for this family (which rightly belong more directly to you) that I have collected in my research. Contact me off list if you would like copies.
