Hi - I have been experiencing similar problems over the last 3 years trying to link my line which I am 99% sure comes from John and Ann Ayling to the John and Mary Crouch line and also to the John and Ann Kitchenside (Australian bound) line - although I have seen somewhere that the father of the latter - James may be the brother of John (m to Mary Crouch)- suggested that they were both born in Cobham, Surrey. Have been to Woking record office a couple of times and to Chichester several. I started all this on the death of my father (another John) as the family realised that we really didn't know anything about my family until too late to ask and also from an interest in WW1 and wondering whether any family served then (many!) It's quite a lot of fun but getting obsessional.

Re: John Adset who married Mary Crouch in Wisley 1787

I have had a small breakthrough since this post, I looked wider into Surrey and with the help of the Surrey Baptisms disk and Marriages disk I may have cracked it. As you know there are so many variations of the name Adsett, well I have found what I believe is the right John, only his name in the baptisms is spealt Atsel, so is his brother James, there sister is Elizabeth and her name is spealt Atshead(another spelling), this only clicked when I saw one of John and Marys daughters was cally Mary and her surname was spealt Adsel in her birth record in Petworth, so I looked for any near spellings in the Surrey Baptisms and found John Atsel born 1761(so right year) in Walton on Thames, whcih is not far from Wisley where he married Mary Crouch.
(I have had no trouble with the Crouch family they are very traceable).
Anyway it appears John, James and Elizabeth's parents were William Adshead, and Mary Street, married in Fetcham, died in Richmond, if I have it right William might be born in Tower Hamlets but need to do a bit more on that one, but the John I have found I have entered into my tree,(which is public if you look if not I will send you the link) I am that sure I have found the right one, so happy bunny.

My email is tina.hills@gmail.com if you would like any details of what I ahve found myself, scan my printoffs of the info and send it to you....

Link to my tree at John
http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/24754335/person/1557023118

Thanks for replying

Tina

John Adset who married Mary Crouch in Wisley 1787

Having now been to Surrey Family History Centre, I am not further forward to finding John Adset's parents or any trace of where he cam from, he married Mary Crouch Wisley 1787 as is noted in Wisley Parish Records and said he was of that parish, his witness's were not related to him.I do know from staff at records office that they only had to live in the parish for 6 weeks to say that they were from that parish.
His first son William was baptised in Wisley as well 1788, then he moved to Petworth in Sussex, where there are a number of Adsetts in local villages. Most people have his parents as Thomas Adshead and Margaret Heather but I know this is wrong as there son John bap 1765 married Ann Ayling or that parish, so not going to follow there trees as I know it is wrong, the trap that others seem to be following and to the extent that they put that Thomas has 2 sons called John one in 1762 and 1765, whom both marry and have children, this would not happen to the best of my belief.
Just laziness and willing to accept it as right and follow the others.

If anyone can answer my riddle I would be ver greatful, there were many Adsets in the Surrey area and from further north as well, I just need help to find the right thread, I have been searching for 5 years now and still no further forward, or backwards as the case is.
I have Sopps and Adsetts from the Petworth area in my family tree. My Great Grandparents were William and Sarah Ann Sopp. One of their sons, Alfred Henry Sopp born 1869 married Mary Adsett born June 1872. They also had a son, Walter James Sopp born 1875 who married Alice Mary Adsett. My grandfather was Herbert (Archer) Sopp born 1887. Are these the same branch of the family related to you?
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Bye for now
Sheila Hey
