Hello Mark,

I look forward to the site - can you let me know when it is up and running.

I must admit, I have been doing the other side of the family as the 1911 census finally gave me a lead.

I am getting a bit worried about Everton now. Last night might turn out to be a blessing, but we need to be getting league points. Roll on the Derby!!

Best wishes Karen

Hello Karen,

I am still gathering the information together and instead of a book, i will be doing a website about the 55th Divisional Signal Company RE. The information I have will be much more readily available to researchers.

I now believe that Harold served with the Liverpool Regiment before WW1 and was transferred along with several others into the 55th Div Sig Coy RE. A block of 9 soldiers were transferred in early November 1914 from the Liverpool regt to the RE and were then given RE numbers 7844-7853. When the Territorial Army were re-numbered in 1917, these men were given the number 432335 to 432343. They all servived the war, one was commissioned and Harold was the only one to receive the MM.

I am also involved in a website on the 55th West Lancashire Division. This will be, I hope, the definitive site for anyone looking for information on the Division and their relatives who served with any of the units.

What has happened to Everton this season? Ok 3-3 with Man U but the rest!!!!

All the best

Mark

Its possible we have been in contact if you are writing a book about the regiment.
If you are who I think you are - I dont have any more information. If you are not writing a book about him, he is my dads uncle.

regards,
Karen

There is a George James Afford in my tree born 23 jun 1847. I suspect he was married twice. 1861 and 1875. I have no other info on him but it is possible that he had a son and named him George as well. If that is the case and this younger George is the person whom you refer to then in fact he would be in our family tree and he would have been an uncle to my Grandfather Frederick Charles Afford.
Sorry but I just got this thread since I changed e-mail addresses over the years.
My e-mail is dafford@eastlink.ca

Thanks for the speedy reply:
I cannot find the George Henry or his son George b.1890 in my family tree.
Most of the Affords came from the Peterborough area...actually I think a small village named Tishmarsh (pardon the spelling) near a town called Oundle near Oxford.
My line is traced back to the early 1800's with some accuracy but because there were so many similar names (Lots of Johns, Georges and Daniels) it is difficult to connect the dots so to speak.
There was one John Afford (Son of a Daniel) who migrated to Australia in 1839/40 on a ship called Cygnet. There are now almost as many Affords in Australia as in England. You might want to contact my cousin Paul who lives in Birmingham as he has done some work on the tree and might be able to piece things together. His e-mail is as follows: pa45.aff40@virgin.net
Sorry I couldn't help directly but I'msure if someone delves deeply enough into this line our paths will cross again as the Tischmarsh area is very small. It's almost sure there is some common ancestory there.
Keep me informed as I will you , if you find out anything of significance.
Regards
Dave
P.S. Your e-mail not shown...mine is dafford@eastlink.ca yes I am in CAnada

He can be reached by e-mail at pa45.aff40@virgin.net
We (the Affords) apparently come from the Tishmarsh area outside Oxford and from Oundle in the same area. There are quite a few more Affords in Astralia..a result of migration of one John Afford in 1839/40
Regards
Dave

Would like a contact in the USA that can explain how the surname of Afford came to be used there. Has anyone a clue as to who was the first Afford immigrant and did he come directly from Europe or through Canada?
Also would like serious contacts with any Affords especially from the USA. I have compiled some info from England (my direct decendants) and Australia. Cannot understand who or when some Afford went to USA. Also as some of the Affords in the USA are obviously of Afro American decent...can someone explain this? Note that I am NOT predjedice in any way, I just want some help here. I suspect that "slaves" years ago, took the names of their "masters" but where did this all start, and what Afford had the audacity to think that one human being should be a slave to another.
Anyway, all coments aside...can/will anyone help?
D. Afford/ Canada
